PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Mr Nicholas Haes

Dear Class of 2022 and your devoted parents,

It is very pleasing that we can have a graduation ceremony together this year!

Congratulations to our amazing parents! You have brought your precious child to a major
stepping stone on the way to an independent adult life! I am sure that the path has had its ups
and downs, but we have made it here. Primary and secondary education is very much a three-
way partnership, and I know all our teachers are grateful for your support and understanding
over the years. I wish all of us parents the best as we help our children onwards.

The pivotal moment is a device loved by writers - a few seconds that change the hero’s life
completely. We fixate on a few moments that have a profound impact on the future, life
proceeds down a radically different path because of a small change in that tiny window of
time. In our own lives, we label those moments ‘luck’ and we blame them when the path we
are on does not make us happy. Those moments, if they really exist, don’t matter and don’t
deserve our attention, they are random and arbitrary.

What really matters is what we bring to all the other moments. What really counts is how
consistent, how persistent, have been our efforts to improve our chances each day. Did we
make use of the opportunities we were given, or did we prefer to fritter them away? When we
really were faced with moments that made a difference to our lives, were we as prepared as we
might have been? No. Few of us ever are. It is hard to climb but easy to fall, difficult to push
ourselves into activity, so easy to find an excuse. But we are given new chances, new choices,
every day. These choices we make in the small moments add up, bit by bit, day by day, we
become the sum of them.

So I, and your teachers here, hope you will seize the good that comes your way and prosper.
But when you do not, when life goes badly, what we hope more strongly is that you try again,
you carry on and you remember that there is a way forward and it is never too late to do
better for yourself.

Go and be successful, but measure success not by the things you have, but by the connections
you make, the meaningful relationships you hold with others, what you give and receive from
those who share your lifetime.

We have enjoyed and grown from our time with you, thank you, now leave us behind with
our fond wishes for your success and happiness. Work hard, work smart, keep cheerful,
keep laughing, be kind and help others when you can. Farewell!

Your Future Is Here.

SPECIAL MESSAGESACADEMIC OPERATIONS MANAGER

Ms Neelam Kaur Bhabra

Dear Year 11 Class of 2022,

Congratulations to every one of you on this remarkable achievement of graduating from Jesselton
International School. You have worked hard during your five years at secondary school and now you are
ready to move on to the world of college, university and work.

The values and work ethic you have gained from Jesselton International School will set you in good stead
as you move into the next exciting chapter in your life. The reality is, future employers need young
people who have high expectations of themselves, people who want to learn how to be better, and who
can take on leadership responsibilities. I hope that you continue to reflect on these and try to live by
them. Thank you all for your dedication to your studies and the school. We are very proud of your
accomplishments.

Lastly, it has been an honour and a privilege to teach all of you. As you continue through life, never
forget to keep learning, keep having fun, and always try to fulfil your goals. I wish you continued success,
a blessed future ahead, and all the best in your future endeavours.

HEAD OF SECONDARY

Ms Shelly Shirlenna Nadin

Dear Class of 2022,

There are so many reasons why you are very close to my heart. Teaching you since your primary years,
till this day, your graduation day, you have proven to us that you are capable of achieving success in
your future endeavour.

For the past years, you have worked very hard, growing not only physically but also growing in character
and academic achievement. During distance learning, your teachers were full of admiration for the way
you braced online learning, attended the classes regularly and completed your schoolwork
conscientiously. Many of you were able to do some of your best work during school closure, learning not
just for yourselves but contributing to the learning of the whole class, and helping your classmates. You
should feel very proud of yourselves. It’s the choices we make today that determine the character of
tomorrow.

To each one of the graduates of the class of 2022, well done for your hard work, participation and
contribution over the years. All the best!

Your Future Is Here.

Student's Speech

VICTOR JASON LEE JEN MING

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

Tonight is a special night for the graduating class of 2022. Now for those of you who might not know
me, I’m Victor.

To start off, I want to give a big congratulations to all of us who are graduating from JIS. Despite the
Covid-19 outbreak, lockdowns, online classes, and probably many other things which I am not aware of,
it’s truly amazing that we still managed to graduate on time.

I feel very thankful and appreciative. When we were stuck at home and doing our online classes, our
parents had to put up with our annoying habits and mood swings even more. So, mum and dad, you’re
the best!

Let’s also not forget all the teachers who did not give up on us especially during online classes, despite
us not responding nor attending lessons. You teachers still have hope in us. A heartfelt thank you to all
my teachers and for that, let’s give a round of applause to them.

Up to now, my experiences have taught me that learning is a continuous process. Learning doesn’t just
take place at school. In fact, I find that learning is a constant occurrence in my daily life: I learn from my
parents (my mum especially), I learn from my friends, I learn even when I am out there interacting with
people along my way. I pick up some social etiquette, business acumen and life experience from older
people I meet.

To my fellow classmates and teachers of this school, you have helped in shaping my life to some extent
and I am sure you would agree with me that I am now more prepared to face future challenges.

Some of us here today, including our parents, are wondering how our lives are going to turn out. It is
OK to wonder but, I also think it is important to realise that our future is not just something that
happens to us: it is up to us to create.

Finally, my dear fellow graduates, let us embrace the opportunity before us. Take what we have learned
for the last 12 years and put it to good use. Leave behind what isn’t helpful and bring forward with us
the lessons that will be the working parts of our greatest invention ever, OUR LIFE! Congratulations!

Student's Speech

JUNG JISU

Good evening everyone; Mr and Mrs Henry Poh, parents, JIS teachers, and fellow graduates.
I'm here to give a speech about this special day. I want to first thank the school for helping me
grow academically, I have had my fair share of struggles learning in other schools, however,
only JIS seems to have enlightened me about how to learn and helped me strive to achieve a
greater future.
I also have to thank my parents for helping me financially and emotionally.
I want to thank my dear friends for helping me socially, mostly Rahul, Laura and Victor. Rahul
and Laura especially, you guys have been there since the very beginning when I came to
Primary 4. I know I can't continue this journey with you all, it's the end of the old and the start
of a new path.
I want to thank the wonderful people from my church for helping me spiritually, to cleanse my
sins and become a new man. I would not have become the man that is standing here right now
giving this speech without your support.
I owe every one of these people everything. I am eternally in their debt and thankful for
everything this community and school have provided me, thank you!

Student's Speech

LAURA CELESTINA WILLIAM

Hello everyone,

To start off, thank you so much to all my teachers and friends for the amazing experience you
have all given me throughout the years in JIS. It was indeed full of ups and downs but there
were still small little moments which made the memories unforgettable, and which will be hard
not to miss.

I’d like to first thank all my teachers for helping me learn in my subjects whenever I was
struggling and couldn’t catch up with the rest of the class. The motivation given to me during
those times always reminded me to stay motivated and to always try the best as I possibly can.

As for my friends, thank you so much for always making the school day exciting and the
feeling of joy and laughter whenever we talk about the most random things during those free
times in class and during recess where it always makes me not want to go home. Thank you as
well for always being great and amazing friends from the start. I’ll never forget you all,
especially my close friends!

However, after graduating I’ve started to feel a mix of emotions, both missing being with
friends and teachers, while also feeling the freedom from subjects. It really made it difficult to
know how I was supposed to feel about graduating from high school as I was so used to the
lifestyle which made me think it would never end, but I realized every happy moment must
always come to an end in one way or another, but will always stay memorable even though it
was something small.

I hope to always try my best in anything I do and to always stay productive in my daily life and
also in my studies in the near future as well.

Finally, before I end my speech there are two people who really made me the person I am
today. Firstly, I’d like to thank Mr Haes for inspiring me to always be myself and not always be
overly cautious about how I am. Then I’d also like to thank Victor, who’s also my best friend,
for always motivating and supporting me, no matter what, which always inspired me to always
be myself.
