During the renaissance, technology flourished after a period of staleness in the Dark Ages

(Middle Ages). With the revival of culture, Greek and Roman arts were rediscovered and studied
by Renaissance students. Part of the arts included the scientific knowledge and theory developed
by these Ancient Civilization. The rediscovery fueled improvements in mining and metalsmith-
ing to inventions from nautical compass to the printing press. The nautical compass was used
during the expeditions from the Old World to the New World. A famous explorer at the time,
Christopher Columbus facilitated the transfers between the different hemispheres, with the
period after his most famous voyage being called the Columbian Exchange. The other influential
impact through Renaissance technology is the printing press. The printing press facilitated the
faster spread and building of ideas. A famous book from the initial press is the Gutenberg Bible

Essence of Our History

The Other Bolelyn Girl (2008) is directed by Justin Chadwick and stars Scarlett Johannson,

Natalie Portman, Mark Rylance and others in England during Tudor era. In this film, Portman
and Johansson play the Bolelyn sisters who are competing for the affections of the King Henry
VIII. The costume designer for this film is Sandy Powell. Initially, the sisters are seen to have
complimentary outfits with outfits in similar colours or similar outfits in different colours. In the
film, Anne Bolelyns’ costume becomes more ostentatious as she advances through society. In
general, the wealthier class is seen to have more layers and decorations while lower classes have
simpler garments. Most of the fabrics are rich in texture, volume, and colour and the jewelleries
also add to the voluminous look. Overall, the costumes seem visually appropriate for the era.

Anna’s costume becomes

Fittings and Conversations

An interview with the famous tailor Cossimo Gonzaga

G onzaga is a well-known tailor in Sicily. He works for the local mer-

chant families and a few noble families. He has over 20 years of experience
working as a tailor for men. He has mastered the art of tailoring as well as dou-
blet making.
When and why did you decide to become a tailor?
I was very young when my father started teaching me sewing techniques. I
discovered that tailoring was not only something I was good at but also some-
thing I enjoyed. So after my father retired, I took over his legacy and practiced
on mastering this art. I have also grown up seeing my uncle, who is a finisher,
dedicate hours to a perfecting fabrics. He would work independently and com-
plete the fulling, clipping, mending and folding. So I have grown to respect and
love clothing.
Who is your clientele?
My clients are mostly rich merchants and nobility. As you know, tailoring is ex-
pensive and cannot be afforded by the middle class, so I do not get clients from
that section. When I started, I only focused on tailoring for women but now I
have also specialized in doublet making for men.
What has changed in fashion within the last 20 years?
When I started tailoring was not as specialized as it is now. With the influx of
elaborate silk fabrics and brocades from Asia, the styles have also become mroe
elaborate and detailed. The sleeves are becoming more and more exaggerated
with every passing year. We have also mastered making button closures which
has brougth a new array of styles and designs.

Add a Touch of LaceL ace, a decorative openwork web,

was first developed in Europe during the
sixteenth century. Two distinct types of
lace making—needle lace and bobbin
lace—began simultaneously. Needle lace
is made with a single needle and thread,
while bobbin lace entails the plaiting of
many threads. Lace thread was typically
made from linen, and later silk or metal-
lic gold threads, followed by cotton in the
nineteenth century. Needle and bobbin
laces were often named after the region or
town where they were made. Preeminent
lace making centers were established in
Italy, Flanders, and France. The finest lace
involved the talents and skills of three dis-
tinct specialists: the artist who created the
designs on paper, the pattern maker who
translated the designs onto parchment, and
the lace maker who worked directly on the
patterns to make the lace.

ways. Add a swipe across ones cheeks and blend

your eyelids for a warm pink pop that will draw
attention to your eyes.

FInspiration From The Battlefield
itted bodices with full and flowing skirts
made from plain textiles with square or V-shaped
neckline paired overtop of chemise allow for the
delicate details of the chemise to show through.
Fitted bodices paired with full skirts allows for
the waist to be accentuated and one of the focal
points of the look. From observing the collec-
tions between 1500-1550, we have noticed that
inspiration from the battlefield has been used to
inspire panels and decorative slashing in both
mens and womens garments. Decorative slash-
es allow for other garments to show through,
adding layers of depth to the garment and out-
fit. Panels with pieces of colourful cloth placed
behind create a colour blocking effect, add-
ing pops of rich deep colours to the garment.

to dress up and elevate an outfit. Rings are
the perfect piece to add a little or alot of bling
to ones fingers just my stacking multiple at a

and a sense of individual style.

Purses that are suspended from a belts have

become the go to handbag for both men and
women. For a more high class option, purses are
embroidered and decorated with jewels, beads

affordable option, leather pouches can be spotted
worn on the middle class.
