H I S T O R Y O F T H E Delta Fellows Program

The Delta Fellows Program was established in 2015 during the administration of our
25th National President, Dr. Paulette C. Walker. It was Dr. Walker's desire to have a
leadership development program similar to the leadership programs offered by
corporations, universities, and many local governments and communities. She
envisioned a program for sorors by sorors that would help ensure that Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Incorporated has diverse alumnae members ready to lead.

The Program was designed to provide a broad foundation for the next generation of
Delta leaders and had the following initial goals:

 Strengthen leadership performance across the Sorority

 Establish qualified leaders for the Sorority's executive positions

The Program objectives were to:

 Attract sorors who have demonstrated a commitment and dedication to
community service, social justice and sisterhood to fill leadership roles in
Delta

 Provide exposure to, and experience in, the concepts, skills and
technologies that will help shape the future of Delta leadership

 Expose sorors to opportunities for leadership in Delta

 Build strong relationships through collaborative efforts in
leadership development

Dr. Walker's vision became a reality when the Inaugural Cohort of
Delta Fellows, consisting of 22 members, were welcomed at a special
reception on Sunday, February 28, 2016 in Washington, D. C. At that time,
she charged the Inaugural Cohort with the following: “to whom much is given,
much is required…to not follow where the path may lead, but to go instead where
there is no path and leave a trail.”

The initial Delta Fellows Program included virtual and in-person sessions, a
mentoring component, hands-on experience with the Sorority's operations,
experience addressing sorority challenges, and opportunities for executive-level
networking. The program was designed and executed by the National Leadership
Academy under the direction of Co-Chairs, Elsie Cooke-Holmes and Dr. Ann D. Jones.
Soror Cooke-Holmes shared, “It was rewarding to embrace Soror Walker's vision and
bring it to life with the Inaugural Cohort.” And Soror Jones added, “I was elated to be
given this responsibility and committed to ensuring that it would be a model for
future leadership programs for the Sorority.”

The Delta Fellows Program has continued during the administration of our current
President and CEO, Beverly Evans Smith for two additional cohorts. Cohort 2 of Delta
Fellows consisted of 23 members and occurred 2018-2019. It was led by Dr. Joi L.
Moore, Chair, National Leadership Academy and Donna Bowman and Janice
Winstead, Co-Chairs, Delta Fellows Subcommittee. Cohort 3 started in 2020, consists
of 25 members, and is led by Dr. Joi L. Moore, Chair, National Leadership Academy
and Marionette Richardson-Scott, Esq. and Janice Winstead, Co-Chairs, Delta Fellows
Subcommittee.
