YWCA DELAWARE

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

YWCA | 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

In the last year, I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing from many of you as
supporters of YWCA. I heard inspiring stories about how you came to know our storied
organization, one that’s been at the forefront of fighting for women’s empowerment
and social justice for over a century. I heard you say that now is not the time for
complacency or to turn our backs on one another and to keep up the good work.

You told me about how YWCA trained you for a job that you never thought women
could do; how you started a business in our microenterprise program; how you cared
about the homeless families we serve; and even how you took swimming lessons at
our pool when you were a child. But most importantly, I heard in your stories that you
appreciated how YWCA always evolved and continued to meet the most pressing needs
of women and families. Whether you volunteered for a few hours or decades or years;
whether you had $5 to give or $50,000, you each left your mark on an organization
that prioritizes women’s needs, especially for those most vulnerable. At a time when
women’s roles in our society dominated our headlines, it became clear just how important it was that YWCA was there to help
women of all backgrounds discover and achieve their true potential.

I heard a lot of my own reasons for supporting YWCA in yours. I was honored to become CEO after more than 10 years with
this organization. We carried forward a message of “Building on the Past and Looking to the Future,” which for us meant that
we were standing on the shoulders of those who came before us to continue their legacy of providing high-impact programs
and advocacy for women and families in need.

The next pages are a tribute to YWCA’s community – our clients who are finding healing and hope in our programs and are
working hard to improve their lives; our donors and volunteers who gave time and generous gifts to keep us strong; and
YWCA’s leaders and staff who power the organization forward. I hope you enjoy this reflection on this exciting and impactful
121st year of YWCA Delaware’s service in our community.

Many Thanks,

Stephanie L. Staats

OVERCOMING CRISIS

Homeless families found shelter and opportunities to turn their lives around at
Home-Life Management Center. Training programs, workshops and counseling
imparted critical skills to keep them from being homeless again. Ronald (pictured,
left) found a job in the culinary arts and a home for his teenage daughter after
successfully graduating from Home-Life. 95% of families who left Home-Life
Management Center last year went to safe and stable housing.

A FRESH START

As families planned for prosperous futures, even as they battled job loss, underwater
homes and other financial challenges, YWCA helped them make smart choices and
investments. Hundreds saved money, improved credit, bought new homes, started
new jobs and launched businesses. Cheryl (pictured) opened a food truck after
taking classes and participating in a savings program. After YWCA intervened, 96%
of families experiencing a foreclosure crisis secured stable housing. 70% of those in
our newly launched Wo(men) Achieving New Directions program developed a plan
to increase their household income as entrepreneurs.

YWCA | 2016 ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 3

HOPE AND HEALING

Survivors whose lives have been impacted by sexual or domestic violence find
their path to healing and recovery at YWCA. 100% of victims in crisis received
a knowledgeable and caring advocate like Ardeena (pictured) to help them find
the medical, legal and mental health solutions they needed to recover from
trauma. YWCA expanded rape crisis services to underserved populations in
Sussex County, and opened a Georgetown office with a 24/7 helpline and
accompaniment available.

INSPIRING CHANGE

YWCA worked in solidarity with groups throughout the state to take a stand
for racial justice and equality. Through the MLK Communication Contest, we
partnered with Christ Church Christiana Hundred to provide a platform for youth
to express how Dr. King’s legacy inspires them and to share, through poetry,
speech and rap, how they want to contribute to social change. 650 people
vowed to take a stand against racism as part of YWCA’s spring campaign.
