Our mission is not just to breed good horses; our imperative is to breed

Welcome To Callaho’s World

It is with a great deal of pleasure that Vanessa and I, our family and our inimitable Callaho
Team, welcome you to our stud farm to enjoy this special weekend with us.

Wow! I can hardly believe we’ve already arrived at our 9th auction! Yes, time really does fly
when your days are filled with the pleasure of working with horses and a team that shares
your passion and ambitions and is acutely focused on achieving them.

It is during this time of the year, as the new collection of auction horses settle into their
work and the final stages of their preparation are underway, that we are really able to get
a clearer sense of their abilities and temperaments. Even though they are the outcome of
breeding decisions taken six years ago, and we’ve come a way since then, we invariably find
ourselves thrilled with the progressive improvement in quality. Especially encouraging are
the outstanding results of so many Callaho-bred horses in the Young Horse Performance
series, and those that are now proving themselves more than worthy as they move up in
the open classes.

However, after 18 years of experience breeding for our constantly evolving sport, it has
become clear that our journey is far from over. With progress the bar keeps rising. Our mission
is not just to breed good horses; our imperative is to breed equine athletes of outstanding
quality and ability, fit for purpose at the very highest levels of sporting competition. This
surely is a big ask, but after all these years I remain even more steadfast that our dam-lines
and broodmares are, and always will be, the key to us realizing our ambitions. In this regard
we’ve come a long way; however, there remains much work to be done.

It is no co-incidence, nor dearth of alternatives, that Lissabon and Con Coriano feature so
prominently in this year’s collection. Six years ago, with only two seasons of foals on the
ground, lady-luck and gut-feel inspired us to let these two sires get on with their vocation.
The subsequent years have not only vindicated our belief in them, but their progeny now
in competition and daughters serving us as broodmares also suggest that in the years
ahead, these two magnificent stallions will surely prove their worth amongst the very best
the world has to offer.

It is thus with much delight and pride that we open our doors to reveal our horses to you.
It is with even more pride that we have the opportunity to showcase our extraordinary
Callaho team and the wonderful work they’ve done over the past year.

Ian & Vanessa

Important Notes For Buyers

1. TRY-OUTS
We encourage anyone interested in a Callaho horse to visit the farm during the try out period
from 8 April to 14 May 2017. This will afford you ample time in which to make a thorough
assessment of the horses which may be suitable and enable you to make an informed,
sensible decision before the auction. To book a try-out date or discuss suitable choices,
please contact Marike Swanepoel on 083 461 3075 or [email protected].

2. VETTING
All the horses under saddle have been fully vetted. Throughout auction day our consulting
Vet, Dr Nico Hendrikz, will be at the disposal of anyone needing a professional opinion
related to the clinical exam or x-rays. Images will be available to your own Veterinarian for
interpretation in the weeks before the auction. Contact Grant Store on 082 339 9646.

3. SEAT RESERVATIONS
Tickets will be available at the entrance on auction day. For those wishing to reserve a
seat or booking at either table or pavilion boxes, please do so via our website or contact
Chantelle McCabe on 082 924 7556.

4. REGISTRATION
When arriving at the Stud on auction day, we suggest you register at the auction office as
soon as convenient to avoid queues.

5. PRESENTATION
On Friday evening the jumpers will be presented through the free-jumping lane. On Saturday
morning we will commence at 9.00am with a presentation of all the auction horses. After
the presentation please feel free to approach our training team with any questions you may
have or visit the horses in their stable. You are welcome to ask for a horse to be stood up
on hard ground for inspection.

6. AUCTION
The auction will commence at 3pm inside the Auction Hall. The auction process will be
deliberate and transparent. To bid on a horse, please use your buyers card or hand signal
clearly and ensure that the spotter or auctioneer understands your intentions.

7. TELEPHONIC BIDDING
Anyone unable to attend the auction in person may bid on a horse using one of three
alternative methods:
a. you may co-opt someone else to attend the auction and bid on your behalf with prior

instructions regarding which horse(s) to bid on, and to what amount.
b. you may co-opt someone to bid on your behalf, but use a cell phone to remain in contact

with your co-optee and give direct instructions while the bidding is in progress.

12

c. you can make prior arrangements with us to phone you just before bidding starts on the
horse you are interested in. We will then appoint someone to remain in contact with you
to take direct instructions while bidding is in progress.

To arrange telephone bidding please contact Grant Store on 082 339 9646 or Chantelle
McCabe on 082 924 7556.

8. PURCHASE
If your bid is successful, remain in your seat until our auction secretary presents you with a
purchase note to sign which will confirm your purchase. If you have not registered prior to
purchasing a horse, please do so immediately.

9. PAYMENT
Please submit your purchase note to the auction office before close of day to conclude
the transaction. You will be presented with an invoice for settlement, which will
reflect your closing bid plus 14% vat and an administration fee of 2.85% to cover the
auctioneer’s commission (2.5%) and insurance (0.35%). The invoice can be settled
immediately by secure internet transfer or bank guaranteed cheque. Normal cheques
will also be accepted subject to bank clearance. All purchases must be settled within
one week. Horses will only be released once payment has been fully effected.

10. INSURANCE
Kuda Holdings (Pty) Ltd is the appointed insurance provider for all horses presented for
auction. Insurance has been pre-negotiated by Callaho on behalf of the new owners and
covers the period from the moment the hammer falls and extends for a period of seven
days thereafter. Insurance cover includes mortality, loss of use, public liability and critical
care during this period. Please ensure that after completing the purchase documentation
at the Auction Office you also sign the insurance documentation. It is the new owner’s
prerogative to extend the insurance cover period beyond the initial seven day period.

11. PASSPORT & History files
Finally, please ensure you receive your horse’s file from the vet’s office which contains
your horse’s passport and complete veterinary, farrier and dental history. Contact Marike
Swanepoel on 083 461 3075.

12. TRANSPORT
Should you need to make arrangements to get your horse home, transport companies will
be on standby at the auction office. Callaho will provide your horse with a new halter and
lead, but we recommend travel boots, a poll-guard and a tail bandage for trucking. These
can all be purchased from the tack shops in the vending area.

Lissabon

Lissabon’s father, Lordanos, continues to entrench himself as one of the finest sires of
show-jumpers in Europe, having already produced more than 23 licensed sons and scores
of champions at all levels. His damsire Sion is a remarkable all-rounder who passes on
plenty of “blood” and excellent gaits. The granddam Reinata (by Contender) is a full sister to
the international competition mare Charisma (Markus Fuchs). This performance dam-line
is further anchored by jumper breeding legends, Grannus and Siegesmund.

After his approval, Lissabon won both sections of his stallion performance test in
Oldenburg. Trained by Heinrich Döwe, in 2003 he won 8 out of his 9 classes for young
riding horses, including the prestigious Damhus Cup. During his 5th and 6th year he was
a serial winner up to M-level and won the Damhus Cup again. Thereafter Lissabon went
to the Bundeschampionate Finals with Johannes Ehning, where he received outstanding
scores of up to 9.3 for style. During 2006/2007 he continued his stellar career with Jens
Baackmann, crowning 2007 with a victory in Vechta in the youngster tour (1.5m)

Lissabon’s short breeding record in Germany is equally remarkable. In addition to multiple
champion foals and state premium mares, he produced four licensed sons of which Lissacor
(Westphalia) and Lissaro van der Helle (Hannover) were awarded Premium. In 2010 Lissaro
rewrote history by winning his third consecutive gold medal at the Bundeschampionate in
Warendorf as well as being runner-up at the World Dressage Championships for Young
Horses in Verden. In August 2009, at the Hanoverian auction for riding horses in Verden,
another son of Lissabon, Let’s Go HRH, was sold to Rolf-Goran Bengtsson for an auction
record price of €130 000. During his brief tenure as a breeding stallion in Germany, statistics
based on progeny generated by their National Federation reveal that he was was placed well
within the top 1% of all jumper sires, and remarkably, also within the top 10% of Dressage
stallions. His combined score objectively affirmed his placing as the best dual-purpose sire
of Warmblood stallions across all studbooks in Germany.

Here in South Africa, after having served his seventh consecutive breeding season, this
magnificent stallion has proven himself, beyond any shadow of a doubt, to be a sire of
Warmblood sport-horses in a class of his very own.

Con Coriano

Con Coriano is a Holsteiner stallion sourced from the Neumünster Approvals by Callaho
in 2006. In line with the aspirations for our jumper breeding program; correct technique,
carefulness and abundant scope were the overriding factors in our selection criteria.

Con Coriano’s sire, Contender, is still the Verband’s cardinal and has had a prolific breeding
career to date. On record he has sired over 100 licensed sons and 93 State Premium mares.
His dam, N-Miss Coriano (Coriano/Ramiro/Landgraf), derives from the revered Holstein mare
lineage 703, which has delivered countless licensed stallions and international jumpers.
She is a state premium mare with meridian scores for her mare test, was reserve champion
mare of Germany in 2001 and in her own right is a fabulous jumper. Con Coriano is a classic
example of the successful, albeit controversial Holstein line-breeding strategy, which has
placed this relatively small studbook on the cutting edge of jumper breeding worldwide;
Cor de la Bryere appears in his pedigree twice, both Ramiro Z and Ladykiller xx three times,
with a dash of Capitol rounding off the genealogy. It is evident that his exceptional free-jump
is firmly entrenched in his genes, and under saddle he has matured into a gifted show-
jumper with immense potential.

The progeny from Con Coriano’s duties as a breeding stallion over several years at Callaho
have been most encouraging. Dozens of his foals out of a wide variety of broodmares
have now been born and raised on the farm, all of which reflect their sire’s prepotency
with elegant, balanced lines and delightful temperaments. They have developed into tall,
modern sport-horses with extremely correct conformation. Most importantly however,
as his fourth crop now on the auction again bears testimony, all indications are that his
progeny invariably inherit his phenomenal, natural jumping ability.

Benicio

In October 2007 Callaho travelled to the Hanoverian Stallion Körung in Germany to source
a Bellisimo M colt with which to expedite our dressage breeding program, having been
extremely impressed by the sons and track record of this exciting sire. This stallion cast a
shadow over his peers at his 30-day stallion performance test at Zweibrucken (2002), with
a final dressage score of 9.63, the highest ever awarded to a stallion at the time. Bellisimo
then went on to win the 4yr old Bundeschampionate in Warendorf. His first foal crop yielded
eleven licensed sons, and Reserve and Champion mare at the German nationals.

Although still immature, we were convinced by Benicio’s excellent basic paces and a sport-
proven dam-line. His mother, St.Pr.Valencia, was Reserve Champion Mare in Germany
in 2002 and his full brother was Champion Foal at the German Nationals. His damsire,
Velten Third, was an International Dressage competitor himself and his sire in turn, Velten
Sohn, was the most successful dressage stallion of his day and competed at the 1976
Montreal Olympics.

Immediatelty after his approval, Benicio was brought to South Africa to serve as a dressage
breeding stallion for Callaho. Two years later, in 2011, convinced by the high quality of
his foals and to do justice to his extraordinary potential, we returned him to Germany to
be professionally trained by Anna-Sofie Fiebelkorn and earn his full breeding license for
the Hanoverian Verband. In this remarkable partnership Benicio flourished and went on
to win the 6yr old German Bundeschampionate as well as his Stallion Performance Test
at Schliekau, with perfect 10’s for walk, trot and canter. His final score for the dressage
section, 9.88, superseded even that of his father and was the highest score ever achieved
in a stallion performance test.

After a fully-booked breeding season in 2012, the arrival of Benicio’s first crop of foals in
Germany created a sensation and confirm that the quality of his offspring on offer at this
years auction are simply an appetizer for what we can expect from this stallion in the future.

EXPLANATION OF THE STAR RATING SYSTEM

Please note that the star rating system used to indicate the utility of each horse is a
subjective assessment by the training team in conjunction with the highly experienced
Maud Aarts. The evaluation is based on the temperament, conformation and athletic
characteristics displayed by the horse when unrestricted, under saddle and during several
free-jumping tests conducted in the course of the training period.

No Star The horse is not rated for this discipline or has talents which
overshadow aptitude here.

One Star The horse has shown commendable ability and potential for this
discipline which could improve substantially with further training
and experience.

Two Star This horse consistently displays first-class aptitude for this discipline
with significant potential for the higher levels.

Three Star Awarded to a horse with exceptional natural talent for this discipline.

With appropriate training there is a high probability that this horse

will excel at the very highest levels in a matched partnership with

a skilled rider.

EXPLANATION OF THE COMPATIBILITY SYMBOLS AND INTERPRETATION OF TERMS

Novice A rider that is still developing their basic skills and lacks experience or
needs to build confidence.
Competent A capable and experienced rider who posses a modicum of ‘feel’ and is
adequately familiar with the training of young horses.
Skilled A sensible rider with considerable aptitude for the correct training of young
horses under saddle, substantial experience and explicit natural ‘feel’.
Professional A highly skilled rider and horseman/woman with years of experience.

Recommended
Not recommended
Possible, with further correct training and or rider expertise

46

Veterinary Classification

Besides the pre-purchase veterinary check every riding horse placed on auction has had
two sets of radiographs taken. Both sets are sent to Equine specialist Dr Roy Gottschalk
for interpretation. The results of Dr Gottschalk’s interpretation are then referenced to grade
each individual horse according to standardized norms. Both veterinary pre-purchase
records as well as the radiography reports will be available for viewing prior to the auction,
and will be attached to the new owners auction horse history file.
Category D & E horses are not offered for sale and those that did not pass their pre-purchase
exam will be withdrawn from the auction.
Radiographs are restricted to selected views which may limit the value of the study.
Interpretation is done on the images presented. Radiographic techniques may, in certain
instances, limit the value of the study.
Normal radiographs do not necessarily mean that there is no pathological process present
as bone abnormalities might not be evident or because soft tissue cannot be fully evaluated.
A horse may be markedly unsound in the absence of any abnormal radiographic findings.
On the other hand, abnormal radiographs DO NOT imply that the lesions found are, or will
be, of clinical significance.
In certain instances, in the absence of current associated clinical signs, it may be impossible
to determine the prognosis or significance of radiological findings.
It can also be impossible to predict how certain lesions will develop. While given radiological
abnormalities may be interpreted with leniency, it does not necessarily follow that other
veterinarians will concur.
The clinical findings, together with the current and intended use and level of performance
of the horse must be considered when interpreting radiographic findings.

THE CLASSIFICATION PROTOCOL CALLAHO USES IS AS FOLLOWS:

Category A: No significant radiological pathology noted.

Category B: Radiographic pathology present – inconsequential or of
uncertain significance.

Category C: Radiographic pathology present – uncertain significance or
amenable to surgical intervention or medical management.

Category D: Significant pathology present with questionable prognosis
as a sport horse.

Category E: Negative prognosis as a sport horse.

The + sign indicates that although the horse has been graded lower than a five star the
radiographic findings are of no clinical significance.
