From the Mouth of the Trail

Do you remember the days before cell phones? When your landline had a twisted cord that went for miles so that you
could stretch the phone into the privacy of your room. Dialing a phone number over and over again until the busy signal
subsided and your call would go thru. Staying up late at night actually talking with friends and family rather than sending a
one word response or an emojii. The act of talking on the phone is a skill that today’s youth are not practicing.
Why is it important to teach youth to talk on the phone? I turned to the internet for a list and narrowed it down to these top 5
1. WHEN THERE IS NO VOICE, THERE IS NO ORIGINALITY. A phone conversation is one of a kind- it can’t be copied, pasted
and shared
2. WHEN THERE IS NO TALKING, THERE IS NO LISTENING. Talking on the phone requires being fully present because if you
miss something you have to participate rather than simply re-reading a text chain.
3. WHEN THERE IS LESS TIME TO THINK, THERE IS MORE HONESTY. People are required to respond without minutes or
hours of crafting a response. And maybe more importantly, not responding is not an option.
4. WHEN THERE IS NO HEARING, THERE IS NO HEART. People are ruder over text than they often would be over a phone
call because tone and feeling are eliminated.
5. WHEN THERE IS NO CONCLUSION, THERE IS NO CONVERSATION. Text conversations don’t end; they fizzle.

Phone conversations can be tricky and even scary. How can we help today’s youth master the art of

actually talking on the phone?
1. Teach them how to speak loud enough and slowly so that they are clearly understood
2. Stay positive- sound upbeat as your tone matters more than specific words
3. Smile—even though nobody sees you! Smiling helps lift your intonation
4. Be Prepared- write down notes in advance

As our campers transition to staff members they have several opportunities to hone this skill. This summer, we are
excited to launch our brand new and exciting Summer Trails Intern Program. The Summer Trails Internship Program is an
opportunity for campers entering 10th grade to put into practice and grow their leadership skills and will act as a bridge between
being an LIT and the demands of being an Assistant Camp Counselor or Baseball Coach. As part of this program,

participants will be responsible for all phone communication with camp. This includes calling the camp office to set

up an in person interview, calling to follow up on Intern status and being responsible for calling over the summer

if they will be late, need to leave early or are absent. In the inaugural summer, many weeks are already

sold out!
Learning to communicate on the phone both socially and professionally is a life skill. Together

we can help decrease the stress and anxiety our children may be feeling when they are

required to have a phone conversation and replace it with a feeling of pure satisfaction.

Our Mission Statement

is commi'ed to empowering children. Our goal is to build confidence and self-esteem
by reinforcing positive human values. We achieve that goal through cu'ing-edge prog=amming implemented by

a caref>lly selected and f>lly t=ained staff whose invest@ent in children, like our own, is unparalleled.

Summer Trails on Ice
A Throwback to our Winter Reunion

From the Dugout

Are you ready to play baseball? We sure are! The 2019 Baseball Season at Summer Trails is going
to be unbeatable, and I am very excited to return as the Baseball Director at Summer Trails.
Summer Trails Baseball Camp continues to be a great place to learn critical baseball skills while
having fun and building lasting friendships!

As we look towards the summer we are excited that Summer Trails Baseball Campers will
once again head to Dutchess Stadium to watch a Hudson Valley Renegades game on Monday,
July 24th and Palisades Credit Union Park on August 6th, to watch the Rockland Boulders!
Tickets are limited and a permission slip is required for attendance. If you are not currently enrolled
for this day and would like to attend, contact the office to be added to our waitlist.

We are also excited to share that new this year, our coaches will have access to
new video analysis tools. With these technologies, coaches will be able to
provide more immediate real time analysis and feedback to our baseball
campers during instruction, helping campers more quickly improve on critical
baseball skills.

I am so very excited to be working with your kids again this summer and wish Baseball Director Adam Massi
everyone the best during their baseball seasons this spring. Summer will be here
before we know it, and I look forward to seeing everyone in just a few short
months!
