The Day I ran to the Woods Written by: Kylee Haugerud
One day I was walking in the forest on a sunny day. As I was walking it felt like nature was talking to me. The animals were singing their tunes. It was all peaceful until I heard a loud “BOOM!”. It sounded like a giant falling down. I ran away as fast as a cheetah and screamed as loud as a siren. I ran until I saw this light brown and divine cabin with emerald green vines, white framed windows, with two rose bushes on each side of the door, and there was a swing connected onto a tree. I knocked on the door and a tall woman opened the door. She looked tired.
She looked down at me and asked, “ Who are you?” she said in a concerned voice.
“ I’m Clara…Clara Lewis,” I said in a scared tone. She looked at me and realized why I looked so shocked and nervous. “Oh, well come in and stay here until they go,” she said in a calm tone. As I walked in it was cleaner than a restaurant and it was amazing. The walls inside were burnt umber and it was nicely decorated with flowers. As I walked to the couch I saw a kid coloring at the dining table.
“ That’s my Daughter, Gisele, she doesn’t talk that much,” she said in a happy tone but her face was calm. Gisele had short silver blonde hair, and her eyes were hazel. Her eyes reminded me of my Older sister, Joelene. As I sat down and looked at the appealing, peaceful, and yet scary forest. The women sat down in a rocking chair that was next to the couch.
“ I forgot to say my name sorry… I’m Abigail,” she said in a nervous tone. We looked at each other like we were scared of saying something off topic. But, she opened her mouth like she was about to say something.
“You are probably from that town that is surrounded by walls that are taller than a giant,” said Abigail in a concerned voice. I just nodded my head like a scared child. She looked at me with a smile. I can tell she was just trying to make me feel comfortable.
“ Well I will explain to you what you heard. Those are called giants, titans, or whatever you wanna call them. Gisele came over to Abigail and whispered in her ear.
“ Oh, the newspaper man dropped something off ?” said Abigail. She walked to the door and opened it. She grabbed some sort of letter from outside the door and she looked a little concerned. As Abigail read the letter, she looked like she was gonna burst out in tears. But, she stayed calm and put the letter in the drawer on the far right of her desk.
“ May I ask why you came into the woods?” asked Abigail. I was gonna reply but I didn’t know how to explain it without tears racing down my face like race cars. We sat there for a few minutes. I finally decided to reply to Abigail’s question.
“ Well, I was going on a walk and then one of the guards by the wall shouted that there was an emergency evacuation…that everyone had to go down to the boats that go down the river to the next town. I got separated from my family on our way to boats and the only way to get out of there was the woods. So, POOF! Now I’m here,” I explained. I looked at Abigail’s brown eyes. She looked at me and Gisele sat on her lap reading “Little Red Riding Hood”.
“ I was asking because the letter was exactly about that,”Abigail said in a tired tone. All of sudden someone knocked on the door and we went quiet. Abigail picked up Gisele and walked to open the door. When she opened the door she saw one of the guards from the walls. The guard looked about the same height as me and he had short brown hair and he looked at Abigail and asked.
“ Is Clara Lewis here?” he asked in a calm but scary tone. Abigail didn’t look scared and she seemed to be used to this kind of tone of voice. “ Clara come over here…someone is looking for you,” Abigail said. As I walked over there. I felt worried, terrified, scared, and afraid of what was gonna happen. It felt like time stopped when I was thinking about this. I felt like a sloth slowly crawling across the ground. But, time resumed and I was at the door making eye contact with the guard. “ Come on, let's go and get you reunited with your family. He said, sounding like he was in a rush. I walked outside to see a wagon
“ You get in the wagon and you two pack your stuff. It’s not safe here anymore.” He said. Abigail did argue and packed her stuff which was only clothes and 3 books. Gisele was asleep in Abigail’s arms. She sat down across from me and Gisele was sleeping while she sat in the seat. We chatted for a while and suddenly the wagon stopped. We were in town.
“ We’re in town already?” she said in a happy tone. Gisele woke up and her hair looked like if you rubbed your hair on a balloon. Abigail and I couldn’t help but laugh. Abigail braided Gisele’s hair and tied the end with a red ribbon. They grabbed their stuff and Abigail looked at me. “ Well, I hope we see each other one day but for now it’s a goodbye,” she said in a calm but sad tone. Gisele waved goodbye and Abigail had her head down trying not to cry.
“ Goodbye, friend…and I hope you guys are gonna be safe here” I said with a sad smile. We both waved goodbye going our separate ways. I walked to a house that the guard told me to go to. I knocked on the door and when it opened. I saw mom, dad, Aunt Lotte, and My Older sister, Joelene and all I could do was smile and cry. I can tell they were happy to see me safe and sound. As I walked into the house I felt safe and calm. Now I got my happily ever after and so did Abigail and Gisele. Well, farewell for now and be safe.
