5 This is the story of two kings. King Aegeus is good. He lives in a city called Athens. King Minos is bad. He lives on an island called Crete.
King Aegeus has got a son. His name is Theseus. He is strong. King Minos has got a daughter. Her name is Ariadne. She is clever. Point. Who is King Aegeus? Who is King Minos?
Under King Minos’s palace there’s a maze. And in the maze there’s a horrible monster called the minotaur. The minotaur has got a bull’s head and a man’s body and he likes eating people. Count the bones.
Now King Minos is bad. When the minotaur is hungry, King Minos says to King Aegeus: ‘Send me seven young men and seven young women for my minotaur. And hurry!’ King Aegeus is afraid of King Minos, so he sends the young people. Count the bones.
Theseus sees the young men and women getting on the boat. He is angry. ‘Father,’ he says, ‘let me go with them. I’m strong. I want to fight the minotaur. I want to kill him.’ ‘No!’ says King Aegeus, ‘You’re my son. You can’t go.’ ‘But I must kill the minotaur,’ says Theseus.
What does Theseus want to do? Tell a friend.
‘OK, you can go,’ says King Aegeus sadly. ‘But when you come back, change the black sail on the boat. Put up a white sail, so I know that you are alive.’
Then Theseus says goodbye to his father and gets on the boat with the young people. Think. Where is Theseus going?
When the boat comes to the island, King Minos is waiting. He sees Theseus. ‘You’re big and strong,’ says King Minos. ‘But the minotaur is bigger and stronger than you.’ ‘I’m not afraid of your minotaur,’ says Theseus.
Now King Minos is angry. ‘Take them away!’ he says to the soldiers. The soldiers take the young people to the prison. But Ariadne, the king’s daughter, is watching them. Write. I’m bigger than .................................................. . I’m stronger than .................................................. .
It’s night. The soldiers are sleeping. Ariadne goes to the prison. ‘Wake up, Theseus,’ she says. ‘I can help you. The minotaur lives in a maze under the palace. When people go into the maze they get lost.’
Then she says: ‘Take this string and this sword. Tie the string to the door of the maze and hold it in your hand. Then kill the minotaur with the sword and follow the string to find the door again.’ Who is Ariadne? Tell a friend.

Theseus goes quickly to the maze. He ties the string to the door and he goes in. He is holding his sword in one hand and the string in the other. Theseus hears a loud roar, but he is not afraid. He hears another roar. Now it’s louder. Where is the minotaur? Point. Theseus goes quickly to the maze. He ties the string to the door and he goes in. He is holding his sword in one hand and the string in the other. Theseus hears a loud roar, but he is not afraid. He hears another roar. Now it’s louder.
Theseus walks and walks in the maze. He can’t see the minotaur, but he can hear it. Suddenly there is a roar behind him. He turns round and he sees the minotaur. The minotaur is big and ugly, but Theseus isn’t afraid. He’s strong and quick and he’s got a sword. He lifts his sword and swings it at the minotaur. He swings it again and again and again. And he cuts off the minotaur’s head. Can you roar? Mime the minotaur.

Then Theseus turns round and follows the string back to the door of the maze. Ariadne is waiting for him. She is happy: Theseus is alive! They go to the prison and wake up the other young people.
There is one more young person now. Who? ‘Sssh!’ says Ariadne. ‘The soldiers are sleeping.’ They creep out of the prison and they run to the boat. Everyone is happy. They are alive and the minotaur is dead. But look! Something is wrong. The boat’s sail is black.
In Athens, King Aegeus is waiting by the sea. He sees the boat and he looks carefully at the sail. It’s black! Theseus is dead!
Find the Aegean Sea on a map. Where do you live? Why does it have that name? King Aegeus is very sad. He shouts and cries. He jumps in the sea and goes under the water. When Theseus comes home, he looks for his father but he can’t find him. The sea in this story is next to Greece. Today we call this sea the Aegean Sea, because we think about good King Aegeus.
