Maternity The ward 25 milk kitchen is now open for patient access. Parents and family members can use the milk kitchen for the safe sterilization and preparation of their baby's milk. Children are not allowed in the milk kitchen. Important points to let families know: • Orientation of parents to the milk kitchen. The clear posters have a stepby-step guide on cleaning and sterilizing pump parts • Discussion of how microwave bags should be dated and timed at time of opening and discarded after 48 hours • Encourage the use of single use bottles and teats if bottle feeding • Encourage parents to bring in their own bottle brushes • Only fridge storage facilities for EBM are available.

Maternity We do not offer any form of storage for formula on Ward 25 or on Labour Ward fridges. Parents need to use starter packs. We will continue to provide formula if there is a clinical indication and this has been moved to the Ward 25 treatment room and should only be provided if there is a clinical indication. Please continue to check the date prior to administration of formula. Formula should NOT be stored in the milk kitchen. Staff on Ward 25 can continue to use the fridge for storage of food however it is unsanitary to leave any dirty dishes or cups in the sink or on the side. Please never leave any dirty or clean cutlery, cups or dishes in the milk kitchen. If you have any questions about this new change which has occurred due to patient feedback to improve patient experience please speak to myself or Louise Tartarelli.

Maternity Please could I remind everybody that women who present to have booking bloods taken over 20 weeks need to be treated as late bookers for infectious diseases. Please ensure that virology is contacted and made aware on 02476 965468 or 25468 (internal). If the birth is likely to happen within 24 hours, please ensure that virology are aware of this, and they will expedite the results. Kind Regards Maggie

Maternity This is a reminder to any staff who travel with Trust equipment in your cars, including community staff, to ensure all laptops/ equipment is safely stored and hidden in the boot. A community staff member has recently had her car broken into and the laptop stolen along with other patient identifiable documents which is obviously both distressing and inconvenient to the staff member and an IG breach for those patients involved.

Maternity

Maternity This is a reminder that patients should not be selfadministering their own medications. We have recently had a case where a woman told staff she was self-medicating with her own antipsychotic drugs but wasn’t actually taking them. Staff didn’t observe her taking her medications which led to a serious decline in her mental health leading her to being separated from her baby for safety reasons and being transferred to a general ward for ongoing care.

Maternity Dear All ‘The Maternity Scan department is asking everyone to add a bauble to our Christmas Tree, or your own, instead of buying cards for your friends and colleagues in Maternity. Messages can be written on the reverse. Suggested donation per bauble £3. All proceeds to Tiny Tickers, the charity for fetal cardiac anomalies. Any support appreciated.’ Kindest regards Katy

Maternity Precept: • Please can you complete as much detail on the perinatal Optimisation Passport for preterm admissions and ensure the booklet remains in the mothers notes. • You must also complete the Magnesium Sulphate & Steroids wizard once administered. This vital information is then transferred across to Badger Net for the neonatal team. This is audited monthly, currently only about 40% of staff complete the wizard. Fresh eyes: • Please continue to complete fresh eyes hourly you are all doing extremely well with compliancy we are on average 95% compliant. • Please remember fresh eyes they are done on the hour by a different practioner, if there is no one to complete the review due to a clinical emergency you may complete it yourself, but you must document the reason why you have completed it and then ask a colleague to complete it asap (this will mean there are two reviews completed for this Hour!)

Maternity Computerised CTG: •All admissions with RFM alone after 26/40 must have a computerised. •Women presenting with second or recurrent episodes of RFM should be offered a Growth USS which should be carried out within 24 hours of attendance (During the weekend or over a public holiday a daily cCTG must be performed until a scan can be completed on the next working day) A referral to obstetrician is required for a future plan of care. This is being audited each month as it is part of Saving Babies Lives criteria which we must be achieving. •Please use the contemporaneous notes on K2 to document your actions following episodes of RFM including date of scan you have booked. •Please remember to discuss fetal movements at every contact and document discussion that has taken place. •Please refer to the RFM Guideline for more details on the management of RFM

Maternity Fetal Surveillance Study Day: • As everyone is now aware we no longer complete K2 online learning: it is essential everyone remains in date with their training, once your compliance expires you will not be able to provide any care that requires you assess the fetal heart either antenatally or during the intrapartum period. • Currently everyone is rostered to attend the study day every 8-10 months to help maintain your compliance. If you notice this is on your roster and you are not able to attend the day due to annual leave, please let me know asap as the study days get booked up very quickly. • If you are off on sick leave this will automatically be re-booked for you when you return.

Maternity- Risk Key messages: • CRRS must be checked at every patient contact • Hospital wrist bands must be applied at the point of admission. • Please ensure drug charts are thoroughly reviewed. Please do not hesitate to seek line manager/CPSM support if required. • Always document transfer and plan of care on K2 with a time and name of the staff that the handover was completed by. • Please ensure to document the first feed after birth as well as skin to skin and feeding support offered. • Please document breastfeeding observation x1 hospital, x1 community as minimum. • Also document discussions of CHINS, P+A and signs of effective attachment and signpost community feeding support. • Chase and review GTT results daily
