We are excited to announce that nominations for our Outstanding Service and Care Awards
(OSCAs) will be opening on Monday 27th June.
The OSCAs are a fantastic way to recognise and commemorate members of Team UHCW
who are making exceptional contributions to patient care.

of our staff ever - get your thinking caps on and start considering who you would like to put
forward for an award.
Whether there is a team who has left a long lasting impression or an individual who has
lived and breathed our values – we want to hear all about it.
Anyone can submit a nomination – colleagues, patients, relatives and loved ones.
Keep an eye out for further details over the coming week.

CTG
To comply with SBLCBV2 the following changes
have been made to intrapartum care for both Fresh
Eyes and Fresh Ears:
All Fresh Eyes and Fresh Ears must be carried out
every hour on the hour by a second independent
midwife /obstetrician to assess fetal wellbeing
during intrapartum care. (This means you will not
complete your own hourly fresh eyes / fresh ears,
however you may be asked to complete one of your
colleagues instead).
CTG
The hourly review must include evaluation of the FHR as well as a classification of the
CTG or Intermittent Auscultation and should comprise of risk factors such as
persistently reduced fetal movements before labour, fetal growth restriction, previous
caesarean section, thick meconium, suspected infection, vaginal bleeding or prolonged
labour, any changes must be documented and should lead to escalation if indicated.
Please can you ensure at each review there is clear documentation that a 2nd
midwife/Obstetrician is present, they should be logging in to K2 with their finger print
to confirm the assessment as this will now perform part of our auditing criteria.
However, the primary midwife should still be reviewing and documenting the fetal
heart at each stage of labour according to the intrapartum fetal surveillance guideline.

Learning Points:
Following a CTG teaching session one of the key learning points was abdominal
palpation is not always documented when reviewing a CTG: this is extremely
important to assess the length and strength and of the contraction as the Toco does
not give us this information and in some cases does not record uterine activity at
all. This is extremely important regarding commencement of augmentation and
during augmentation to prevent hyperstimulation.
K2:
Please can everyone ensure there online K2 learning is completed before it expires,
this forms part of safety for maternity and is a mandatory requirement. Everyone is
sent a reminder 6 weeks before it expires and weekly reminders until it is complete.
If you are having problems accessing your online account please let Wendy Taylor
know who can look in to it.
CTG
PRECEPT: MgSo4 & Steroids:
Please complete the Antenatal Steroid and Magnesium Sulphate Wizards on K2, so
accurate and up to date information can be transferred across to Badger Net. These
are essential data, form a part of NNAP dashboard and we are mapped against
performance and compliance and this is audited every month.
CTG teaching:
These teaching sessions are back up and running on Monday and Friday mornings,
please join via teams the sessions are 8-8.30 and are a really useful way of learning
and developing. If you have any interesting cases you would like to discuss I am
more than happy to either support you in presenting them or I am happy to present
them on your behalf.

Congratulations to our Substance and Alcohol Misuse Specialist Midwife Laney Holland for being shortlisted in the
inaugural BBC CWR Make a Difference Awards.
Four finalists have been selected for eight categories, with Laney in the running for the Key Worker prize.
The awards are a chance to say thank you, recognise and appreciate the people who make life better for others.
Laney was put forward by the charity Kairos Women Working Together as much of her caseload involves supporting
sex workers.
“I didn’t realise I had been nominated but it was lovely to get the call!” said Laney, who has been at UHCW since 2018
and began her current role last November.
“I love my job and the fact that I can give women unconditional love and care. It reminds me that it’s really important to
continue doing what I do.
“The women I see have different and complex circumstances but there’s a reason I put so much love and passion into
what I do - because they deserve it.”
Laney will discover if she has won at an awards ceremony at HMV Empire on Sunday 18th September. Good luck
Laney!
