FISH VS. FLAX

Critical Consideration: Absorption

Omega-3 fatty acids fall into two major categories: plant derived (flax) and marine
derived (fish and algae). Many mistakenly think the two are interchangeable. Flax
contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which must be converted to EPA and DHA.
Research shows that under optimal lifestyle and health conditions, only about 5%
of ALA converts to EPA, and just 1% converts to DHA.

While flax-derived products may contain many health-promoting benefits, they do
not provide the necessary amounts of EPA and DHA.

FISH OIL VS. KRILL OIL

Critical Considerations: Research & Potency

Although krill (shrimp-like crustaceans) are a marine-based source of omega-3s, very
few human clinical studies have been completed on krill oil. Fish oil, which has been
used to support optimal health for centuries, has been the subject of more than 8,000
human clinical trials.

In addition to a lack of research, potency is a key consideration when comparing krill
and fish oils. A recent study showed a serving of concentrated fish oil to be 382% more
effective in increasing omega-3 blood levels than a serving of krill oil.2

When manufactured according to international quality standards and delivered
in the triglyceride form, fish oil has a proven record of potency, efficacy, purity,
and sustainability, and is backed by substantial scientific research.

Fish oils are gently purified of heavy metals (including
mercury), PCBs, and other contaminants through the
process of molecular distillation. This step is essential in

omega oils. Molecular distillation uses very low heat to
remove undesirable organic compounds while preserving
the key beneficial components of the oil. For all of Nordic
Naturals’ non-concentrates, this is the final manufacturing
step. The oils are then sent, in their natural concentrations,
simply purified, to our bottling and encapsulation facility.

3 ESTERIFICATION

For concentrated products, fish oil must be
converted from natural triglycerides to ethyl esters.
During this process, the glycerol backbone of
these long-chain fatty acids is removed.

4 CONCENTRATION

Utilizing single-step molecular distillation that
avoids unnecessarily reheating and transporting
the oil, we concentrate oils in order to yield higher
percentages of the most beneficial omega-3s
eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

5 RE-ESTERIFICATION

To ensure optimal absorption, after
concentration, our purified oils are carefully
returned to the triglyceride form—the only form
in which they exist in fish. By re-esterifying
our oil in phases, we are able to deliver 90+%
triglycerides—far beyond those of other
brands. Only natural enzymes are used to form
triglycerides in our concentrated products, with
no chemicals such as hexane acetone, and no
use of excessive heat. Few other brands take
this extra step, preferring instead to market their
products as ethyl esters.

THE TEST RESULTS

EXCEPTIONAL FRESHNESS

Freshness, which ensures product integrity and biological efficacy, may be
the single most important quality of fish oils. Freshness is crucial for several
reasons. It eliminates common complaints of fishy taste and burps. On the
physiological level, fresh fish oil prevents free radical formation, which can
oxidize LDL cholesterol and has been shown to have a negative effect on the
human body.*
The main indicator of freshness is peroxide value (PV). A second important
marker of freshness is anisidine value (AV). As peroxides are oxidized, they
form quantifiable compounds that become the anisidine value. Anisidine
value is a measure of past oxidation, whereas peroxide is a measure of current
oxidation. The lower these values, the fresher the fish oil. The measurement of
the total oxidation of the oil is referred to as “TOTOX.” The formula to calculate
TOTOX value is (PV x 2) + AV.
