Life is made of both tough and trouble-free circumstances. To live is
to go through each and every obstacle and reach tranquillity in life.
Leaders are those who know the way and go through the way with
their own fellowship towards their vision.
Along 10 months the journey of ‘’Our Essence - Volume 4” was
proceeded showcasing significant impacts of the journey of UOC
LEOS. Last year was also another challenging period with the
pandemic situation. Nevertheless, UOC LEOS proceeded in their way,
engaging in their usual charitable programmes and social reform
projects serving the society and offering a vast kind of experiences
to the fellow members through various opportunities. We make this
a great chance to express our sincere gratitude to our continual
readers through whom we were encouraged to proceed this further.
Moreover, we would like to remind our behind the curtain promoters,
well-wishers and the Leos who sent us their creative work to make
this all a success. Without you all this won’t be possible.
From here we kindly remark another milepost of the end of another
year. We would like to invite you all to stay with us to witness another
fabulous upcoming year as well.

THOUGHTS FROM

HEAD OF THE EDITORIAL PANEL 2020/21

“Success isn't just about what you accomplish in your life; it's about what you inspire
others to do."

Leo Club of University of Colombo provides numerous opportunities for individuals to
develop as great leaders by providing value to various aspects of society. It instils in our
younger generation a positive attitude toward finding long term solutions to
community problems using the best humanitarian approach possible. I'm extremely
glad and grateful to have participated in this platform for the past four years because it
has provided me with several possibilities to grow both socially and professionally.

One of the best opportunities I've had is to work on the club's Official Newsletter, Our
Essence, with a dedicated team of editors, which will always be a treasured memory in
my life. As the club's Immediate Former Editor in Chief, I'm delighted to witness the value
added by our current team of editors and creative designer, which was led by Leo
Chathuprabha Kasthuriarachchige, the Head of the Editorial Panel throughout the
Leoistic year 2021/22. Thank you all so much for your untiring efforts to make "Our
Essence - Volume 04" more vibrant and meaningful. I’m truly honoured to
guide you in any manner I can to elevate the standards of “Our
Essence”. I would like to wholeheartedly thank Leo Chathuprabha,
for believing in me, for being a wonderful leader to her
teammates, and for her unwavering dedication to the club.

The culture of Leo Club University of Colombo defines
success not just in terms of reaching stated objectives,
but also in terms of adding value to whatever we do. I
hope that we, as a team, did justice to the duties we
took on.

As a response, I thank and wish the current Executive
Committee, Directors, Assistant Directors, Faculty
Coordinators, Editors, and members all the best for
their continued dedication to the club and for their
continued success. In addition, I wish the next group
of determined Leos the best of luck in the upcoming
Leoistic year and I invite all of you to set a goal that
commands your thoughts, liberates your energy,
and inspires your hopes.

It is important to note that the school is
fortunate enough to have such a dedicat-

Because of that, society has not noticed

We will look forward to providing neces-

community while implementing a sustain-

under the “Project ID”. Further, we thank

Project Thirasara IN ACTION

Leo Club of University of Colombo initiat-
ed the project ‘Thirasara’ under the proj-
ect category of Poverty and Better Life
for the Leoistic year 2021/22. The ulti-
mate objective of our project is to uplift
the living standards of a poor family and
make a path for self-employment. Fur-
ther, we need to encourage those who
are in a position to help others.

UOC LEOS First, we selected a samurdhi recipient
family, which is free from a permanent job
in Kurunegala District. Then we provided
9 hens with 1 rooster. In addition, we
incurred the cost of the chicken coop and
necessary foods for 1 month (rice polish,
broken rice etc.). To get results
immediately we provided hens that are in
the stage of laying eggs and to expand
the chicken coop, they can reproduce
young animals by hatching eggs. They do
not have to pay anything for it except
labour and time. Not only physical materi-
als, but also we provided a counselling
service with the support of Mr. S.M.K.A.B.
Basnayake, Livestock Development
Instructor (SLTS), Department of Animal
Production & Health, Kurunegala. He
conducted the counselling service about
how to maintain the chicken coop
successfully and earn more income.

Thus, our project was successfully
completed with the help of many people
who supported us through various
initiatives. We are very grateful to all of
them.

Being forever grateful for everyone who is with us, it is my intention to
scribble some thoughts as the "one last time".

The appointment as the Head of the Editorial Panel of Leo Club of
University of Colombo was honestly a surprise which opened up as
one of the greatest things that has happened up until now in my

potentialities, to step beyond my comfort zone and also to build up
friendships filled with love, laughter and fun.

Publishing a monthly newsletter was never an easy task. It is my
responsibility to award due recognition to individuals who supported
us.

UOC LEOS PAGE |18

Leo Hashini Dilshara
Senior Editor

It’s been a wonderful journey of a year being a Senior
Editor to the Editorial Panel of Leo Club of University of
Colombo. The opportunity to contribute to the newsletter
by writing about something new each month was a
wonderful opportunity that was quite challenging but
which has also been absolutely exciting. I consider it a
privilege to be able to work with the most amazing team
and Leo Chathuprabha Kasthuriarachchige, The Head of
the Editorial Panel, who have always supported me
throughout this journey to build myself up and have
supported each other to take the newsletter to greater
heights. I would love to see ‘Our Essence ‘ and our very
own club improving in the years to come, by the hands of
new members who would gain invaluable experiences,
memories and self development by their commitment
and dedication.

Senior Editor

Even though we are still at the beginning of 2022, as Leos
our challenging yet unforgettable Leoistic year of
2021/2022 is coming to the end. Being associated with
Leoism renders plenty of benefits. I am blessed to be a part
of this proficient team. Working with the Head of Editorial
Panel; Leo Chathuprabha Kasthuriarachchige and the rest
of the team was an utter pleasure. I am sure that each one
of us used our individual skills at a remarkable level to
publish newsletters with a high quality. Last but not least,
the most important individuals are the dear readers who
stay with us during the whole Our Essence series. I invite all
of you all for a new Leoistic year with a new Panel of Editors.

Leo Hiruni Jayawickrama
Senior Editor

“Being an editor is boring and no fun, plus do I have the ability to
be one?” This was my constant thought from day one when my
friend asked me to apply for an editor position. There hasn't been
a time when I made a decision without thinking twice, but that
day I thought more than 10 times. But lucky enough, my
consciousness compelled me to be part of this amazing crew.
Sooner I realized that being an editor is one of the most
enjoyable and privileged positions. You get to be the first and the
only one to see the original work of different individuals who are
from different parts of the country. Also, you get the privilege to
edit their creative work which goes beyond your imagination.
Further, there is no other satisfying feeling than the happiness
you get by beating the deadline of your piece of work.

Moreover, not to mention the funny, humble colleagues who
worked with me. They gave true meaning to what it is like to be in
a team, to help each other, to give our best, and more
importantly how to be an editor who is honest with their work.
This crew left many interesting stories for me to remember.
Hence my gratitude to all crew members for warmly welcoming
me, giving me positive vibes, and watching me grow despite my
shortcomings. Also kudos to all of us for finishing a successful
year amidst all trouble.

UOC LEOS PAGE |22

OUR ESSENCE VOL 04 | ISSUE 10

But, no achievement can be done individually. So, first my
gratitude to our Editor-in-Chief, Leo Charhuprabha
Kasthurarachchige for exposing us to new opportunities and
handling us to get the best out of us despite our contradictory
perspectives. Also, we are grateful to Leo Hirushan Bandara for
designing “Our Essence” in the most creative way possible. Next,
my appreciation for the Immediate Past Executive Board,
especially Leo Semini Gunasekara and Leo Nimesh Henadeera
for having our back. Moreover, I’m grateful to the current
Executive Board for helping us out. But most importantly, I owe to
all readers and supporters, writers, poets, storytellers,
photographers, and reporters for sending us articles. You all
were the ones who made me enjoy editing in this brief time.

“Yes, I’m sure being an editor is one of the most enjoyable ways
for you to explore yourself. Grab your chance, It's now or never.
Trust me you will always get support from this Leo family. Not
sure? Try it, see how your thoughts change like mine, and be sure
to share your ideas with us. Until then, Happy New Year and good
luck for a new Leoistic year.”

Leo Senali Wanigasundara
Editor

It is a great privilege for me to serve as an Editor for Leo
Club of University of Colombo, where young leaders
are brought up. It helped me a lot in shaping up my
personality while I was able to pen down my thoughts
on several topics. All this time the experiences and the
far-sighted guidance of Leoism helped me in
identifying my potentials and also overcoming my
weaknesses. Rather than following academic work, I
honestly got the chance to find out myself during the
work done and experiences shared with the fellow
members. I make this a great opportunity to extend
my sincere gratitude to Leo Chathuprabha
Kasthuriarahchige, Leo Semini Gunasekara and all the
fellow Leoism personalities for the confidence shown in
me throughout the time spent. This will be really an
unforgettable chapter in my university life with all the
fun times we had shared.

Leo Imesha Madhurangi
Editor

Throughout the past year, working in the Editorial Panel as an
Editor, I have gained a wealth of knowledge I will always treasure.
Working together with the panel members has been a fantastic
learning experience. Being part of a team has taught me skills
that I can use in more than professional areas of my life. I have
learned to be open minded, to value other people’s opinions and
to consider other ideas along with mine to come up with great
final results. I have come to realise that being a part of a team is
more than just sharing credit. A team effort takes compromise.
I am truly grateful for our audience for the readership and
thoughtfulness as our newsletter is about to end another
milestone of its journey. I would like to honour the Head of the
Editorial Panel; Leo Chathuprabha Kasthuriarachchige and all the
members of our team I was so thankful to have collaborated with.
Through the past year, we have all gotten so close, strong and
preserved the true value of “Our Essence” from the beginning to
the end. Although this is the end of the first chapter in my journey
of Leoism, I promise myself to make this the beginning of another
great chapter in Leoism as well as in my life. My wish for everyone
in the panel, the club, and our beloved readers is that you all
continue to experience success, to feel fulfilled in all you do and to
have nothing but pleasant results with each completed project!
Lastly, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude for my club leaders
for believing in me and giving me this valuable opportunity. Long
live “Our Essence”!

challenge at all. I always try to provide a motivational

Leo Sashmini Anuradha As an undergraduate I struggled with lack of
Contributor communication skills. After joining the Leo
family of University of Colombo, I was able to
overcome the fear of public speaking and inter-
acting with different people. The Leoistic year of
2021/22 has opened me a lot of opportunities to
improve myself in different areas. Working as a
moderator is something I have never done
before. Nevertheless I learned how to moderate
an interview with professional experts which is a
huge achievement in my Leo journey. I would
like to thank the Head of the Editorial Panel; Leo
Chathuprabha Kasthuriarachchige and the
team for believing in me and giving me the
opportunity to be a part of this proficient team.

Leo Tharushi Gamage Leo is all about leadership, teamwork, and
Contributor having fun through service. I was always
fascinated by how we can make a great
change in society through Leo. It is one of the
most exceptional platforms you will ever find,
not just to polish up your skills but also to serve
the community. I always felt honoured to be a
part of Detect and Correct as a moderator, and
it gave me the opportunity to have a clearer
understanding about the debatable topics in
the current context. While nurturing young
leaders, Leo creates more value for our lives
without borders. The experience you will gain
here is priceless.

Leo Hasna Akarawita It was a great pleasure to be connected with
Contributor Detect and Correct as a moderator, I was able
to gain valuable knowledge about social issues
UOC LEOS which occur in day to day life and how it creates
an impact through debatable topics. This
opportunity not only allowed me to expand my
scope on such topics at the same time to
contribute to something valuable. I thoroughly
believe that youth has so much potential to
