As the Immediate Past District President, it is with utmost delight that I pin this message to the newsletter of the Leo Club of the University of Colombo. The Leo Club of the University of Colombo has undoubtedly achieved remarkable milestones over the past couple of years, steadily ascending the ladder of success. The club itself shows how much the members’ commitment and dedication important for the While acknowledging the club's overall success, I observed an issue of not being very involved with the Leo district in past years. However, under the presidency of Leo Haritha, positive changes have been initiated, and it is noteworthy that Leo Shamod is making further efforts in this regard. It is crucial for the club to actively engage with the Leo district, and I encourage you to continue these positive transformations. A successful club is one that is well-rounded, encompassing quality membership, impactful projects, and active involvement with the district. These factors will ultimately be evaluated, so I encourage you to set high targets and aspire to become the best in the Multiple District. Wishing the Leo Club of the University of Colombo continued success and growth. Finally, I express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to share my thoughts with you. OUR ESSENCE VOLUME 06 | ISSUE 06 2 1. Could you please share some insights into your role and responsibilities as the District Treasurer? Being the district treasurer comes with a lot of responsibility, especially since you have to deal with finances. I have the responsibility of taking care of all the financials in the district and fulfill all obligations without missing a single rupee. Then, as the district treasurer, I am trying my best. It is hard to express this explicitly, but it is a great responsibility. The majority of our leos are university and school-aged Leos who lack employment and have limited financial literacy. For instance, it might be challenging and time-consuming to gather information regarding payments. Working with the money of many people, I have a great deal of duty when I go to invest from the district to the multiple side. 2. Last year you were holding the position of Chief Region Coordinator. What main challenges did you face after being appointed for your new role this year? In terms of the Chief Region Coordinator position, the duties are different because the chief's job is to visit the club to identify administrative shortcomings and fix them. This was not too tough for me to accomplish because I had experience working in that capacity as the club president and later as the zone region. As the district treasurer, however, you have to deal with payments from both the bank and multiple perspectives. Since I did Commerce at G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, I didn't find it more difficult holding the position of district treasurer. However, I must balance everything in rupees since creating a balance sheet is a challenging process that gets harder as accrued payments and receipts add up. Compared to the position of District Treasurer, the Chief Regional Coordinator's primary responsibilities are not as management-focused. This is because the District Treasurer position demands strong management skills, which must be demonstrated internally even if they are not visible to the outside world. LEO ANJANA UDESH

My Leo journey started with our Immediate Past District President Leo Kojitha Gamlath in the year 2016-2017 joining the Leo Club of Avissawella. When I joined Leo, I didn't have any basic idea what Leoism is. Since we have been close friends since our school days, I accepted Leo Kojitha's request to join the Leo movement. It became clear after a while what Leo meant and what might be gleaned from it. Subsequently, I achieved the title of Best Leo of the Year, an unexpected accomplishment. As my enthusiasm grew, I was able to advance to become the Club President, Club Treasurer, Club Secretary, Zone Director, Regional Director, Chief Regional Coordinator, and now District Treasurer. From the Leo moment on, I realized why I loved Leo and who I am. 4. Could you please share a personal leadership philosophy that has guided your decisions and actions within the Leo Club? I should give a special mention to Leo Kojitha, as it was he who introduced me to the Leo moment. Furthermore, I was guided by a great number of people. I should specifically highlight Leo Isuru, Lion Dilruk, and Leo Thilina. Leo Thushan Alahendran also taught me a lot about facing the dark side of things and aided in my development. There are many more both inside and outside the club, but these individuals are still special. 5. With your past experiences how does the Leo movement collaborate with other organizations or community partners to enhance its outreach and effectiveness? As Leos, we frequently collaborate together with organizations like AIESEC, Rotaract, and many. By doing so, we gain a lot of exposure. While other clubs have various visions, Leo Moment has leadership, experience, and opportunity; thus, when we work with them, we will discover many things to offer. For instance, there is room for improvement in spoken English and public speaking. However, because there is greater exposure to a wider range of activities, I believe that Leo Club is the greatest young organization out there. We may also obtain helpful assistance from other clubs, and I believe it will be quite beneficial if we work on initiatives and events with other clubs. We can combine our experiences with theirs. 3
OUR ESSENCE VOLUME 06 | ISSUE 06 6. As the District Treasurer, what advice would you give to someone aspiring to take on a leadership role within the Leo Club? One of the main issues I notice with the present-day Leos is that they come forward less frequently than the previous Leos did. Accordingly, there is a decreased likelihood that a task or obligation will be handled and completed. When we are assigned a task, we take initiative and conduct independent research; the present Leos don't do that. I thus want individuals who will take on leadership roles in the future to carry out their responsibilities well. It is really valuable if they do it politely since they accept that obligation voluntarily, as we don't compel them to do it. We are aware of how challenging the situation right now is, yet our life will be worthwhile if we can multitask. My advice to the incoming Leos is to take on responsibilities, see them as your own, and work through them to fulfillment. Its neighbors, Samoa and Tonga, followed suit soon after. In Auckland, a dazzling fireworks display lit up the night sky, with the tip of the Sky Tower transforming into a kaleidoscope of colors. Sydney then took over, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic Opera House with a 12- minute pyrotechnic extravaganza accompanied by lasers and lighting up the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From the traditional bell-ringing ceremonies in Seoul and Tokyo to the vibrant torch festival in Hiroshima, New Year's celebrations continued across Asia. Hong Kong marked the occasion with its biggest ever fireworks display, while Beijing hosted a lively countdown event in Shougang Park. OUR ESSENCE VOLUME 06 | ISSUE 06 US to allow Bitcoin to be part of mainstream investing funds The good news is that the US already allowed Bitcoin to be part of mainstream investing funds! This happened on January 10, 2024, when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first 11 spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through traditional brokerage accounts, without having to directly purchase or manage the cryptocurrency themselves. This was a major milestone for the cryptocurrency industry and is expected to bring billions of dollars of new investment into the Bitcoin market. It also signals a growing acceptance of Bitcoin by mainstream financial institutions. It's important to note that while Bitcoin is now included in some mainstream funds, it remains a highly volatile asset with significant risks. Investors should carefully consider their own financial situation and risk tolerance before investing in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency. 8 Gabriel Attal becomes France’s youngest prime minister Gabriel Attal, a youthful 34-year-old, took office as Prime Minister on January 9, 2024, making him the country's youngest ever to hold the position. OUR ESSENCE VOLUME 06 | ISSUE 06 Japan makes history asspacecraft lands on the moon Japan's "Smart Lander for Investigating the Moon" (SLIM) made history by gently settling on the lunar surface on 20th of January. This momentous feat marks Japan as the fifth nation to land a spacecraft on the moon, joining the ranks of the United States, Russia, China, and India. JAXA, Japan's space agency, erupted in cheers as data confirmed the successful touchdown, a testament to years of meticulous planning and engineering. However, the celebrations were soon tempered by a technical glitch. SLIM's solar panels, crucial for generating power during the Moon's long, frigid nights, failed to deploy properly. This leaves the lander reliant on its onboard battery, which has a very short lifespan. Despite this setback, JAXA engineers are scrambling to find solutions and maximize the mission's scientific output within the limited timeframe. They're exploring alternative power sources and prioritizing the most critical tasks, hoping to glean as much valuable data as possible before SLIM falls silent.
