CHAPTER 1: BACKGROUND OF RESEARCH
INTRODUCTION Petaling Street, also known as Jalan Petaling, was a Chinese settlement area (Chinese Town) in Malaysia during the British colonial era. For many years, Jalan Petaling has been a commercial area that preserves the traditions and culture of Malaysia's Chinese minority, with Buddhist temples and stores providing jewellery, traditional medicine, and Chinese cuisine. Hawkers sell their products on the street from early evening until late at night, with a variety of items for sale. It is well-known for its counterfeit items, which range from branded goods to pirated VCDs/DVDs. It now has a canopy roof in the shape of a dragon that covers the whole road. It contributes to the lively scene while keeping the heat and rain at bay. Petaling Street and the Pasar Seni LRT Station are only approximately 400 metres apart.Petaling Street is also wellknown for its bars, restaurants, and food booths that provide a range of meals and foods such as Hokkien noodles, grilled fish, asam laksa, and curry noodles. The majority of the vendors are Han Chinese, although there are also several kiosks maintained by Bangladeshis, Indians, and Malays. Petaling Street received a major RM11 million makeover in 2003, when two massive Chinese gates were installed at either end of the street to welcome tourists. The "Green Dragon" was a green roof cover that covered the whole road. The roadway is now entirely pedestrianised and has been converted into a pedestrian mall. The street is designated as a historic site. Petaling Street is the greatest area to buy for knock-off products and sample local Chinese food. Buyers may frequently negotiate on watches, clothing, and other imitation products. This route is constantly congested, both with visitors and with residents.

FINDINGS The existing footpaths looks gloomy and boring The LED Screen at Petaling streets not working The narrow streets and sidewalks can become overcrowded. Hence, the stalls make it difficult for people to move around comfortably. Food stalls used by the back alley of Petaling street. A lack of ventilation and room causes poor hygiene Lots of free space at the top – The occupied area is a waste of space, it is necessary to add some ideas, such as information boards Poor façade of the building – the paint in the area faded due to exposure to light, it needs to be repainted to attract visitors Lack of softscape – The limited plant area causes the surrounding area to be hot, causing discomfort to visitors Unattractive footpaths Poor maintenance Pedestrian congestion Food stalls in Back alley ISSUES OF PETALING STREET
The roof is full with holes and has a worn-out appearance. This is due to the fact that the roof was constructed in the year 2001, which is now 22 years ago. When it rains, the purpose of the roof, which is to shield from both heat and rain, does not perform as well as it should. When rainwater hits the surface of the roof, it creates an extremely loud noise. Next, the fact that this roof has a hole results in rain falling into Petaling Street, making shopping on this street an unpleasant experience for customers. Petaling Street suffers from a lack of hygiene and can be described as being very unclean. It is not uncommon to find trash on the ground, and the air is typically thick with dust and smoke. The leakage of the roof makes road is wet and slippery which causes sellers to need to buy extra umbrellas Gaps and aged appearance of the roof Lack of cleanliness Old condition of the roof ISSUES OF PETALING STREET
The roof of the sales stall is not parallel causing a hot environment and a crowded situation The stall is covered by informal and temporary structures such as a canopy and plastic over stall. Lack of visual impacts, such as old signage and wall paint The irregular and dense arrangement of shops along the way causes the street space to become narrow. There are dont have a category division for the shop lots and the time that the road operates for business or for those who ride in vehicles It also dont have a signboards which show the shop's activities along the street. There are certain part of buildings which is not well maintained There are old and mossy buildings making the street or areas less attractive and look worn. Lack of traction on building walls Lack of spaces between stalls Irregular arrangement of shop Does not have signboards and operating hours The buildings too old and mossy ISSUES OF PETALING STREET
SWOT STRENGHT WEAKNESS Petaling street one of tourist attraction. Easy access for tourists and local people because have a four entrance (two of the entrance have a eye-catching gate way) Preserve traditional and culture of malaysian chinese The road area becomes narrow when there are many stalls along the road There are no signs regarding the hours of operation and no direction markers are provided along the road Gaps and aged appearance of the roof
SWOT OPPORT UNITY THREAT Near to public transportation such as LRT, MRT, Bus Station The path that leads to Petaling Street sometimes have people who make others feel unsafe, thus people along the way feel uneasy and fear. Petaling street is a diverse marketplace that caters to a wide range of customers from different economic backgrounds The high number of foreign tourists in Petaling Street can make it difficult to maintain social distancing and other SOPs, such as wearing face masks and washing hands frequently. This can increase the risk of the spread of infectious diseases, such as influenza and COVID-19.
