@PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM The Grand Symposium is an event that aims to bring together both Psychology and nonPsychology students to learn Psychology interactively outside their classrooms and take part in disseminating the knowledge to others. There will be final year Psychology students, presenting their Final Year Projects (FYP) and evaluated by esteemed judges from various specialisations. From this event, it is hoped that other students will be exposed to how FYP evaluations are, encouraging them to think critically and intellectually discuss amongst each other about Psychology. #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment INTRODUCTION :

@PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM Assalamualaikum w.b.t. Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. We thank Him, we seek help and forgiveness from Him. The committees of “The Grand Symposium: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” have been working hard to ensure the event’s success. #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment WWEELLCCOOMMIINNGGRREEMMAARRKKSS :: It is undeniable that the process of making this event a reality has been a strenuous one, but new friendships and bonds are made. Alhamdulillah for this opportunity, and surely we could not move forward without the advice and help from Dr. Miza, our academic advisor and Dr. Haffiezhah, our student association advisor. Thank you so much for empowering us throughout this journey. This event’s vision is to explore IIUM students’ potential, especially Psychology students in presenting their original works from their Final Year Projects (FYP). Aside from enhancing their presentation skills and strengthening their FYP through constructive criticisms from distinguished judges, it is also an effort to introduce how FYP works to other students, giving them an idea about what their FYPs will be like in their final year of studies.

@PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” is chosen as our theme for this event, as the base of research is based on the work of others. From the FYP presentations, we hope to reflect on the fact that we need more fresh ideas and point-of-views to support past research and works, and with that, we are able to celebrate the works of past scholars and researchers. The efforts that have been made cannot be left behind if we are focusing on progressing for a better future. Therefore, this event aims to be a catalyst to increase interest and wonder for research. I thank you, every single one of you who helped make this event a success, whether directly or indirectly. The Secretariat of Psychology (PSYCSTA) hopes to organise more beneficial programmes such as this in the future. Until then, please keep on supporting our programmes and efforts in creating impactful initiatives for the betterment of IIUM students, specifically Psychology students. Have fun competing and spectating, may the research projects presented bring tremendous benefits to the Ummah, aamiin… Best regards, Amanina Hussaini binti Dzulkeflee Programme Manager, The Grand Symposium: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, Secretariat of Psychology (PSYCSTA). #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment

@PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment PPAARRTTIICCIIPPAANNTTSS :: AMIRA FARZANA BINTI SAIFUL BAHRIN (1912192) High levels of stress and sleep deprivation are psychological responses that substantially impact students' daily lives, including a reduction in overall academic and social performance. In the medical realm, there are various viable answers to this problem; however, this research will focus on music therapy as an alternative approach. Music therapy has been proven as an effective non-pharmacological therapy for a variety of health problems. The increase in sleep quality and reduction of stress levels using music therapy will allow students to intervene in problems associated with sleep disorder, stress and other pertinent problems. Hence, this research aims to conduct an experiment on undergraduate students to determine the effects of different forms of music therapy, such as relaxation music and Quranic recitation, in improving sleep quality and reducing stress levels. This research is an experimental pre-test post-test control group design. The sampling technique that will be used is convenience sampling involving the sample of 45 undergraduate students from IIUM that met the requirements, which are (1) not diagnosed with sleep disorder and (2) not proficient in Arabic. 1

@PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment PPAARRTTIICCIIPPAANNTTSS :: AMIRA FARZANA BINTI SAIFUL BAHRIN (1912192) The participants are divided into two experimental groups and one control group using simple randomisation based on their pre-test stress levels. Students in the experimental groups will be instructed to listen to the relaxation music or Quranic recitation playlist, whilst the control group will be asked to sustain their regular sleeping routines. A questionnaire designed by the researchers to ascertain the sociodemographic, PSQI and PSS was used to gather the data. This study is significant in helping students have a cost-effective, affordable, and non-invasive intervention with no negative aftereffects to improve their sleep quality and reduce their stress. As the study examines the effects on the dependent variable, the study expects students in both experimental groups, which are relaxation music and Quranic recitation, to have higher effects than the control group. 2

Compulsive use of internet interferes with the circadian rhythm as well as closes off one’s effort from being used to interact with the social reality of the surrounding. Thus, the purpose of this research is to study the relationship between internet addiction and sleep quality as well as internet addiction and social connectedness among Malaysian university undergraduates. This quantitative study employs convenience sampling, in which the Google Form (survey) containing informed consent, demographic information, Internet Addiction Test, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Social Connectedness Scale-Revised are shared on various social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, etc.), to collect XXX respondents. Individuals who are eligible for this study are Malaysians, aged between 18 to 30, currently enrolled in any Malaysian university, public or private, as an active undergraduate only. Exclusion criteria are people with mental illness. Using Pearson Correlation Coefficient in SPSS, results showed that XXX. Discussions revolving XXX can be seen.

The purpose of the first quantitative part is to examine the relationship between the perceived in-group superiority and level of identification; and between Malay ethnic identification and the level of identification with Mat Kilau’s characters among Malay men. Meanwhile, the purpose of the qualitative is to explore the perception of Malay men on the representation of masculinity in the Mat Kilau movie. Using purposive sampling, a total of 200 participants for quantitative and another 10 participants for qualitative will be recruited among Malaysian Malay adult man who has watched Mat Kilau movie. This study will make use of Google form surveys to conduct the data collection. The proposed data analysis will be Pearson’s Correlation and Thematic Analysis for quantitative and qualitative respectively.

@PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment PPAARRTTIICCIIPPAANNTTSS :: HANNAH SOFEA BINTI NORHISHAM (1912244) Rapid, advancing technology has made it easier for people to seek romance virtually. However, past studies have found that women are prone to becoming vulnerable to negative experiences on dating sites. Despite this, there lacks coverage on how this vulnerability occurs from the perspective of Malaysian female young adults. To address this knowledge gap, the objective of the present study is to explore the experience of Malaysian female young adults chatting with promiscuous male users on online platforms such as dating apps and social media. Five to nine participants will be recruited via purposive sampling to participate in a semi-structured interview as part of the qualitative research. The inclusion criteria for this study are: Malaysian female; age 18 to 25; users or former users of online platforms such as social media and dating apps; and Malaysian female young adults who had a negative experience chatting with promiscuous male users on said platforms. An exclusion criterion for this study would be Malaysian female young adults with a rather positive experience chatting with promiscuous male users on online platforms. The interview will consist of 9 questions, where responses to those questions will be analyzed using thematic analysis (TA). The findings of the study should contribute to the gap of knowledge in online dating culture in Malaysia as well as online promiscuity.

@PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment PPAARRTTIICCIIPPAANNTTSS :: The present study is conducted to measure the level of selfcompassion, mindfulness and subjective well-being (SWB) in undergraduate students at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and to examine the relationship between selfcompassion, mindfulness and SWB in IIUM undergraduate students. This study employed the quantitative approach and used a quota sampling method in collecting data from 314 IIUM undergraduate students from 14 kulliyyahs. The participants need to be: 1) an active IIUM student for Semester 1, 22/23, 2) an undergraduate IIUM student and 3) currently enrolled in the Kulliyyah, not completing the CELPAD’s course. The instruments used for this study are Self- Compassion Scale (SCS) by Neff (2003), Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) by Brown and Ryan (2003) and Mental Health Continuum Short Form (MHC-SF) by Keyes et al. (2008). The hypotheses for this study are there is a relationship between self-compassion and SWB in IIUM undergraduate students and there is a relationship between mindfulness and SWB in IIUM undergraduate students. This study found that there is a significant relationship between selfcompassion, mindfulness and SWB and self-compassion and mindfulness are significant predictors to SWB. @PSYCSTAIIUM @PSYCSTAIIUM SECRETARIAT OF PSYCHOLOGY IIUM #ACESI2023 | #PSYCSTA2023 | #HolisticDevelopmentSocietalBetterment PPAARRTTIICCIIPPAANNTTSS :: NUR NAJIHA BINTI KHALILI (1912628) The present study measured the level of academic procrastination, self-control, and binge-watching and examined the relationship between self-control, binge-watching, and academic procrastination among undergraduate university students. It is hypothesised that there will be a negative relationship between self-control and academic procrastination and a positive relationship between bingewatching and academic procrastination. 219 participants were recruited using convenience sampling techniques. Participants consisted of 88 males and 131 females (M = 1.59, SD = .49). Participants aged from 18 to 25 (M = 22.33, SD = 1.24). This quantitative study used an online survey, Google Form, to ease the data collection from the participants. Academic procrastination was measured using the Academic Procrastination Scale (APS) by McCloskey (2011), self-control was measured using the Brief SelfControl Scale (BSCS) by Tangney et al. (2004) and binge-watching was measured using the Binge-Watching Addiction Questionnaire (BWAQ) by Forte et al. (2021). Using the Pearson correlation analysis, it is expected that there is a significant relationship between self-control, binge-watching, and academic procrastination. Using the multiple regression analysis, it is expected that self-control and bingewatching significantly predicted academic procrastination.
