Spring 2019 ~ AFRS 515.01: Black Family Studies

VIRTUAL SUBMISSION: Due Sunday, MAY 19TH, 2019 via iLearn
PHYSICAL SUBMISSION: Due Monday, May 20th between 10am – 4pm in

Dr. Wright’s office. Late submissions will not be accepted!!

INTROSPECTIVE: the act or process of looking into oneself
*Merriam-Webster*

Students will create a personal self-help manual to gift to themselves and/or to their
families that speak to the most salient concepts that the class has interrogated. Students
are being asked to CREATE some “thing” that expresses their learning for the semester.
This is a PERSONAL project that will NOT be completed in a group or with any other person
within the class, unless the student wishes to share. This means that it is expected that
each individual will have different concepts that speak to THEM.

Students are asked to consider the following for their individual, culturally
INTROSPECTIVE project:

Before you began the course, what did you think you would get out of the class?
What transformation is occurring/has occurred for you this semester?
How do you know that you are changing/transforming?

➢ What have you noticed about yourself as you hold the proverbial “mirror” up
to yourself and begin to peel back the layers of white supremacy from your
mind?

How has this class affected others within your community?
➢ Remember that your community is an extension of YOU.
▪ Are you paying attention to HOW your community is a direct reflection
and extension of yourself?
▪ Have you noticed how your community members are responding to
your personal transformation?

What have you learned about your family?
➢ What have you learned about yourself?

Have you shared any of the course information with friends and/or family?
➢ Why?

How has this class been relevant to your understanding of the plight of the Black
family?

➢ How has this class been relevant to your understanding of the plight of the
Black community?

Will you plan on using the information provided in this class to change the way you
view yourself and others?

➢ Which materials would you share with others? Which materials do you plan
to keep?

In completing the reflective project, think about the following:

What are the 3-5 most important concepts/things you have learned this
semester?

➢ Which readings/authors are associated with those concepts? (or was it an
in-class lecture?)

➢ What about them changed the way you think?

How to complete this project:

I. Identify your audience. ~ 3 points
a. Who is this project for?
b. Your Future Self? Current Self? Specific family members?
• Why did you choose this audience?
• What does this audience mean to you?
• What do you hope your project will do for your audience?
c. This should take the form of a dedication

II. Identify the format of your project. ~ 3 points
a. Depending on your audience, the format may vary, so keep that in mind. You
must explain why you chose your particular format.

III. Identify (minimally) 3 salient themes/concepts from class that you would like
to highlight within your project. It is expected that students include at least
ONE (1) item from the class required Dixon text. ~ 10 points
a. Why are these themes/concepts relevant/important to you?
b. How are these themes/concepts relevant for this project?
c. Which authors introduced you to these concepts/themes?
d. Must identify materials from Dixon book to include in your book.
• Why did you choose those specific materials?
• What is the utility in these materials?

IV. Identify the “transformation” that is occurring AND/OR that has occurred due
to this class. ~ 10 points
a. This does not mean that you make something up. Rather, this project
challenges you to reflect upon how this course is/has challenged your
understanding about yourself as a member within a family as a wo/man,
daughter, sister, mother, father, aunt, partner, brother, cousin, uncle,
potential educator, etc…

• How do I think of myself now that I am in this class?
• How did I look at the Black family (as a collective community – or did

been in this class?

V. Quality of Project ~ 4 points
a. Aesthetic Appeal/Quality
• What does the project “look” like?
a. Is there a dedication in your book to discuss who &
why you wrote the book/poem?
b. Are there pictures inside the book? If so, are they
relevant to your discussion?
c. What is the “flow” of the story/poem?
d. Do the images used reflect class discussion/content?
e. Are there choppy transitions from scene to scene?
f. Do the scenes correspond with previous
scenes/content?

Things to consider:

While reviewing ALL materials for class, irrespective of when your group presents on
whichever reading materials, it is imperative that students come to class prepared
to review all materials, having read and actively participate in class discussions. This
will contribute to your project while exploring and identifying which themes are
relevant to you, individually:

➢ Students who slack on their reading and who choose to be unprepared for
class because their peers are reviewing the class material will do themselves
a GRAVE INJUSTICE. Typically, this attitude and perspective is reflected in a
student’s final project, regarding QUALITY and overall project grade;

Dates of consideration:
➢ Tentative Project Outline due: Sunday, April 28th, 2019. Ultimately, students
should NOT wait until the last minute to consider what their project will
include/be! Students should be identifying concepts DURING class
THROUGHOUT the semester!!
➢ Submission due dates will be different depending on the FORMAT of the
project.
▪ VIRTUAL projects due: Sunday, May 19th via iLearn, 11:59pm
▪ PHYSICAL projects due: Monday, May 20th in Dr. Wright’s office
between 10am – 4pm ONLY
