They are mainly used in speech when we want to: confirm that something is true or not, or to encourage a reply from the person we are speaking to. Question tags are short questions at the end of statements. 1 Jack is from Spain, isn't he? Mary can speak English, can't she? Question tags rules: Rule 1 : When question tags are negative, Anomalous verbs are used in an abbreviated form. Rule 2 : If the sentence is positive, the question tag will be negative. Rule 3 : If the sentence is negative, the question tag will be positive. Rule 4 : Pronouns are used with question tags, and nouns are not used. Rule 5 : In case helping verbs are missing from the sentence, do/does/did are used in the question tags. Rule 6 : If a sentence contains a subject as no one, anyone, someone, everyone, somebody, the question tag will be they.
