Chazal tell us that learning should be fresh and new every day in the eyes of all who
learn. While every year in Yeshiva Tiferes Yehuda Aryeh is filled with freshness and
newness, this year stands out. With the founding of the Mesivta, the excitement in
Carteret is palpable. As we watch the founding class step up to join the ranks of lomdei
haTorah in klal Yisroel, we cannot properly express our hakoras hatov to Hakadosh
Baruch Hu for granting us the opportunity to be part of this.

Tonight, our honorees stand for hischdshus. Each of them not only understands this but
have made it part of their being.

Our Guests of Honor are Rabbi and Reb. Ephraim Polakoff. Reb Ephraim has, on his lists
of accomplishments, the founding of Yeshiva Gedola of Carteret. As one of the original
14 talmidim, all of the Yeshiva’s growth stands as a zechus for himself and his family. As
he stands at the helm of a kehillah in the Five Towns, we are sure that his leadership
qualities are being recognized.

Rabbi and Mrs. Zecharya Michelsohn, our Alumni Honorees, are inseparable from
Carteret. The years that Reb Zecharya spent in the Yeshiva were years of unprecedented
growth. Zecharya was involved with that growth. From the Bais Hamedrash setup to the
seforim, from the Gabbai lists to the tefilos, Zechaya’s handiwork is still noticeable in the
Yeshiva. The Yeshiva would look and feel entirely different without Zecharya. And our
Carteret family would not be the same without the Michelsohn family.

Dr. and Mrs. Gildin, our Parents of the Year, share the idealism of making new starts. As
founding parents of the Mesivta they are instilling in their children the fire and
enthusiasm that can only be taught through example. Their idealism is only surpassed by
their unique and outstanding commitment to their family. May the Mesivta of Carteret
rise and surpass the expectations of having such a family as part of our parent body.

Tonight’s dinner stands to recognize the courage and idealism that each of our honorees
represent. May we all walk away from this evening with our own excitement for Torah
and Yiras Shamayim intensified.

The '‫ גמ‬tells us in ).‫ מס' סוכה (כח‬that when ‫ יונתן בן עוזיאל‬would learn, a bird
that flew over his head would burn up. '‫ תוס‬quotes a ‫ירושלמי‬, that the reason
it would burn is because when ‫ יונתן בן עוזיאל‬would learn; he would learn with
the same level of joy as the ‫נתינת התורה‬.
We see that when somebody learns ‫ תורה‬on some level he is reenacting
‫מעמד הר סיני‬, and the more similar his learning is to that ideal the more the
circumstances will mirror ‫מעמד הר סיני‬.
If there was a fire then, there will be a fire now.
As we started the new Mesivta this year, it brought a new simcha to the
learning throughout the yeshiva. Especially the ninth grade, who are just
experiencing the “fire” of learning for the first time.
‫ יה"ר‬that as the Yeshiva continues to grow we should come closer and closer
to a true ‫ קבלת התורה‬and Carteret should become a place were bachurim
experience a true ‫קבלת התורה‬.

Thank you for joining us and supporting the Yeshiva!
At this year’s dinner, we get to publicly acknowledge quite a few individuals who are
among the Yeshiva’s founding pillars in some way or another. Each at different points
and each in very important ways.
Beginning with Rabbi Ephraim Polakoff - or should I say - he began us. R’ Ephraim was
among the pioneering Talmidim that enabled the Yeshiva to open it’s doors in Sept. ‘06.
The following year R’ Zecharya Michelsohn joined. He joined not only the Yeshiva, but
the top rank of Talmidim who have made an everlasting impression in the Yeshiva. R’
Zecharya was the Gabbai, and the Gabbai Seforim, the graphics artist who created the
logo above, among the many other roles he filled. He spent a great deal of time and
effort to calculate and ensure that each decision he made for the Yeshiva was the right
one. Most of his work became the very fabric of the Yeshiva as you know it today. He
also began the initial Alumni Association, always working to keep the chevrah together.
“Dr. Gildin doesn’t stop recommending the Mesivta to everyone” is what I heard from a
patient at Pleasant Dental. The Gildins are among the first parents of the Mesivta. Not
only have they entrusted us with their Eli, they also enrolled their next son for next year.
If you ask any alumnus to name one local “Baal Habayis” in Carteret, without a doubt it
would be “Hamada”. R’ Elchanan has been an incredible friend of the Yeshiva, since it’s
very first day. His kind heart and cravings for chessed, has led him to always look out for
our Talmidim. From rides to cake deliveries, and so much more, he remains a cherished
friend of the Yeshiva, and proudly a personal friend as well.
Another cherished friend is Nachum Rekant. Nachum's life-size personality is infectious.
Alumni from before and after his times, always tend to know and befriend him.
This dinner could not have been a success without the wonderful Honorees & Chairmen.
Thank you for your involvement. I also need to publicly thank those behind the scenes,
Yitzchok Levine, Mrs. Michal Goldstein of MS Designs, and my role model Parents. Most
important of all, my dear eishes chayil, Avigail – who so devotedly agrees to be a single
mother to our dear children, Esther, Yehudis, & Bassie, throughout the weeks preceding
the dinner. She goes far and beyond to allow me to be so dedicated to the Yeshiva.
