School archives served as a repository for the collection and preservation of historically
valuable documents relating to the history of the school or the community, which if not
properly keep, otherwise would be lost. The National Archives Malaysia have taken action to
keep and preserve every historical document about the College Sultan Abdul Hamid so that

CHAPTER 1:
SCHOOL BUILDING

3

SCHOOL BUILDING

Sultan Abdul Hamid College (SAHC) and Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid (KSAH) is one
of the oldest schools in Malaysia. It was located at Alor Star, Kedah, Malaysia. Initially, SAHC
known as Government English School (GES). In 1908, Mr Muhammad bin Iskandar had been
assigned to become first Headmaster of GES. The first building of the school was a wooden
structure that located between the Alor Star High Court and Balai Nobat. It was an old office
that already had been used by YAB Encik Wan Md Samad which is a Chief Minister. During
the beginning of 1910, the number of students had increased that caused some of the students
had to study under the trees because the lack of classes. Therefore, a stone house had been
rented but unfortunately, the house was not suitable. It is because of the condition of the rooms
were small, dark and not enough to accommodate the number of students. The GES faced a
problem when the shortage of trained teachers. It caused some of the students had been
transferred to Penang Free School, Malay College Kuala Kangsar and seek employment after
passing standard 4.

In the year of 1915, the school has been rebuilt on 48 acres of land that selected by Cik
Mohamed Ariffin (Government Secretary) and Mr M. I. Merican (new headmaster of GES) at
Tanjung Bendahara. There are 2 storey-building that consisted 2 classrooms on the left and
right side. The Government’s education had been planned to build another 2 classroom that
can accommodate more than thousand students, field and others basic facilities. The school
was opened and declared formally by Mr E. A. G. Stuart, the new headmaster and
Superintendent of Education on 1st January 1917. The number of students had been grown so
much by 1923 and the construction of the building was improving. At the same time, Mr Stuart
decided to build hostel that can adequate 50 students from outside of Alor Star or rural area. It
will give chance to others to get better education. After serving for a long time, Mr Stuart's
position as principal was replaced by Mr E. C. Chicks who was also his assistant by the end of
1926. In 1927, the school was suddenly shocked by the sad news of Mr stuart's death at Pulau
Pinang. Therefore, a nice library which is Stuart Library had been built to appreciate his service
to the school by using the fund got from the teachers, public and government.

The school name had changed from GES to Sultan Abdul Hamid College (SAHC) by
25th October 1935. The new headmaster also had been appointed in the next year which is Mr
Wilson that had made many great changes to the school. There were a few buildings had
completed and built such as the Games Pavilion, expansion of hostel, science laboratory and
the assembly hall. Mr Wilson also introduced a variety of co-curricular activities for students.
Unfortunately, a bad thing happened to the school when the school was forced to close because
it was used as a Japanese military base during the World War II by 1941 until 1944. After a
while, on October 15, 1945, the school reopened. Definitely, the school is suffering from severe
damage. The school conditions were very bad and many buildings were damaged by the war.
Fortunately, the efforts of Mr. J. F. Augustin as the new principal have succeeded in restoring
and save the school with the help of other teachers.

In 1956, the school was formally can be recognized as a secondary school by the
Government’s Education. One of the former SAHC students, who had held a high position in
the country which is as a Prime Minister, YAB Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamed had contributed
financially for improving and maintenance of SAHC infrastructure and buildings. From the
1960s to the present, many changes had taken place in the development of the SAHC. a

5

development fund for SAHC was launched by the KDYMM Tunku Sultan of Kedah. At the
same time, the increasing change in development is also the result of efforts from various
parties such as the administration, PIBG (Parents Teachers Association) and SAHOCA (Sultan
Abdul Hamid Old Collegians’ Association). As a result, SAHC reached its 100th anniversary
in 2008 and hopefully it remains one of the best premier schools in our country

CHAPTER 2:
TRADITIONS AND HERITAGE

8

TRADITION AND HERITAGE

Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid (KSAH) or Sultan Abdul Hamid College (SAHC) have their
own tradition and heritage. Firstly, the motto of (SAHC) has been used started from the year
of 1908 until today. The motto is “Scholar, Sportsman, Gentleman”. This slogan should as a
principle that needs to be embedded in each student of SAHC. The motto also considers as an
identity for the student that learns at SAHC. With its motto, the SAHC has produced numerous
notable such as Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj dan Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (Haniff,
2009).

Then, SAHC also excels in sports not just good in academics. For example, in rugby
sports, as they are known as one of the best teams in Kedah. During the years 1990 until 1994
SAHC was the best sports school in Kedah (al-Qadri, 2008). On April 28 and 29 in the year
2007, the SAHC participated in rugby competition held at the Sungai Petani, Kedah
(Muhammad Romli, 2007). SAHC was awarded as champion after defeating Penawar City
School 12-0. The legacy of this rugby sports also still be continued until now.

Before the student applied to continue their study at SAHC, there is some requirement
that the student should fulfill. There is some implementation of student enrollment at Form 1
that basically based on academic achievement (Aniq, 2012). For example, eligibility for
education in KSAH is to earn a 5A or 4A 1B in the Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR).
KSAH also offers pre-university packages.

The College Sultan Abdul Hamid is basically for secondary boy students only. It

consists of boy students from Forms 1 until Form 5. The college also has the students from
Lower 6 Forms and Upper 6 Forms which include boys’ and girls’ students or co-educational
(al-Qadri, 2008). Originally KSAH is a school that accommodates only male students but for
Pre-University packages, female students are admitted. There are currently only 127 female
students. In 1954, the College started Sixth Form and the first batch, of three girls, joined the
female student population. This was the period when the College had its biggest number of
girls. For example, the admission of female students from Kg. Bahru Girl's School in order to
give them the opportunity to pursue higher education. However, in 1951, the intake of students
from the school was discontinued because of the facilities at Kg. Bahru Girl's School has
available and adequate for their students.

12

Then, at the SAHC, the student will have two sessions of learning time. The first session
runs from 9 am to 1 pm while the second session started from 2 pm to 4 pm (Al-Saadi, 2013).
However, the second session is the prep which under the supervision of teachers. After this
time, the students are allowed to do their own activities like sports, reviewing, or resting. Since
1908, the student's attire still the same and has not changed. Mostly, Malay students do not like
to wear shorts which they come to school with a sarong and baju Melayu while the Chinese
students only use braided or pigtails as hairstyles (Al-Saadi, 2013). However, during the year
1940 to 1950, the style of dressing has been changed into a casual style in which the Malay
boys student needs to wear long sleeve shirt while the Chinese and Indian students can wear
short sleeve shirt. There are many sports or activities that have been conducted in SAHC.

Other than rugby sports, SAHC also popular with their sepak takraw sports. For
example, Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Kedah, had become the winner of sepak takraw sports
of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (Mssm), in 1970. Before they began tossing the rattan
ball in a game of doubles or quadrants, the students set up their own courts.

CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, there is a lot of history and information about schools like SAHC that

can be found for students or researchers to explore. It is especially useful when there are some
archival materials related to the school also available and can be viewed. Thus, it gives us an
opportunity to learn and see more about the history of a school whether in past or present. In
the National Archive of Malaysia (NAM), there were many archival materials related to school
had been preserved such as documents, newspapers, magazines, manuscripts, letters, and films.
It became more interesting because archival materials such as images can give a clear picture
of the school in the past that rarely can be seen.

By using OFA (Online Finding Aid), it had made it easier for us to complete this task
because of the current pandemic situation that makes it difficult for us to visit the archive
physically. However, there are some constraints that make archival materials inaccessible in
the OFA. In completing this task, we also had gained a lot of knowledge about Sultan Abdul
Hamid College which is one of the oldest schools in Malaysia that held a lot of history. We
also get chance to view some of their archival materials that being preserved at the National
Archive through online. Lastly, it is very important for archivists at NAM to continue preserved
the archival materials related to schools for reference by present and future generations.
