■ POWER MAGAZINE, sources

In support of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s renewable
energy program, the Chief Executive Officer of the
Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) and member of
the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy
Efficiency’s (RCREEE) board of trustees Sheikh Nawaf
Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa received RCREEE delegation
headed by the Executive Director Dr. Ahmed Badr
accompanied with Siemens delegation.

The meeting, held in late June, tackled the kingdom’s
proposal for the establishment and setting Electrical
Vehicles (EV) sector in the Bahraini market.

RCREEE Planning Director Ashraf Kraidy andTechnical
Director Maged Karam Eddin Mahmoud joined the
delegation along with Ms. Laura Wiehler, RCREEE’s
business development specialist. Also, Siemens
Project Manager Mr. Tugcan Sahin joined the meeting.

The project, designed in cooperation with Siemens,
aims mainly to reduce the kingdom’s carbon dioxide
emissions and also reduce Bahrain’s national energy
bills in accordance with the international trends.

The attendees also discussed the role that energy
service companies can play in supporting Bahrain’s
national energy sector under the supervision of EWA.

They further explored the role that EWA can play
in the development and empowerment of energy
service companies to push forward energy efficiency
projects and programs on a national scale. This will
further develop the quality of available services in the
kingdom’s market.

Over the past years, Bahrain has taken many steps
to introduce EV in its market benefiting from EV’s
advantages which classify EVs as the most promising
option in the future of the automobile industry given
the vast technological development.

In this regard, RCREEE proposed the EV project in
cooperation with EWA. The project depends mainly on
the creation of enabling conditions that allow EV vast
spread and the increase of its competitiveness against
traditional means of transportation.

The project proposal includes developing a detailed
technical and economic study, which calls for the
cooperation of all national stakeholders.

It is noteworthy that Bahrain is one of the founding
member states of RCREEE back in 2008. Sheikh Nawaf
Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa was named RCREEE’s board of
trustees chairman in 2013.

SEP * The term ‘Internet of Things’ is a growing topic of conversation. What exactly is the Internet of
2019 Things (IoT) and what does smart lighting have to do with it?
* How is the IoT Different from the Traditional Internet?
32 The internet is a worldwide system of computer networks that until now, has been about giving

people access to information upon request. We do a search in Google or another search engine to
find information, or send a request to a specific site to consume content of interest. The content
posted to the web is created by humans, for humans. We have a question. We get an answer.
When we want to connect with someone or share something with them, we go to LinkedIn or
Facebook or another social media platform. The traditional internet has become so ubiquitous
and so transformative that it is a digital fabric woven into our everyday lives.

many individuals and organizations looking to stay ahead
of the curve. Industry leaders are adopting technologies
and infrastructures they believe will support future
applications.

Smart Lighting and IoT
Smart lighting is playing a pivotal role, unlocking the
power of the IoT and smart building application
What is driving adoption of smart lighting systems?
1- Energy and operational savings - According to IBM,
the day-to-day operation of a building represents over
70% of the total cost of that building over its lifespan. The
immediate impact of IoT in commercial buildings is to
lower operations costs, particularly in the form of energy
savings.
2- Building Efficiencies – By creating a digital version of
a building and its internal operations including systems
(lighting, HVAC, security, etc.) and occupant activities, you
can visualize what is actually happening in the building,
and use those insights to make better decisions. The
granularity of data within a lighting system from different
sensors can be analyzed to create a detailed picture of a
space. These new insights enable facility executives to
centrally manage systems in the building or group of
buildings while improving efficiencies.
3- Occupant Health and Well-Being – According to
Navigant Research, “In recent years, there has been
a growing shift toward occupant health and well-
being as a driver in commercial buildings. Lighting
has been a leader of building technologies within this
overarching goal, allowing for increased controllability.
Within commercial offices for example, the increased
controllability through an IoT lighting system, can help
occupants improve productivity, and stay awake and
more focused on tasks.”

INTERNET OF 3
THINGS BRINGS
CONVENIENCE, RISK SEP
2019

35

The “Internet of Things,” which involves technology that allows us to remotely connect to home
appliances, lights, security systems and more, has created convenience at your fingertips.
With the push of a button, you can check in on our homes, but there is risk because as with any
internet connection, these devices are vulnerable to hacking.
Internet of Things (IoT) allows you to connect through computer networks and exchange data
without human interaction. You can set ovens to preheat, turn on or off lights, arm home security
systems and more from a smart phone with these smart appliances and devices.

Consumers should be aware of the risks, however,
and take measures to protect their devices, homes
and personal information.

Still not sure if you have an IoT device? Here are
some more examples of how many consumers
utilize this technology every day:

  Automated devices, which remotely or
automatically adjust lighting or HVAC;

  Security systems, such as security alerts or Wi-Fi
cameras, including video monitors used in nursery
and daycare settings;

 Medical devices, such as wireless heart monitors or
insulin dispensers;

 Thermostats;
 Wearables, such as fitness devices;
  Lighting modules which activate or deactivate
lights;
 Smart appliances, such as smart refrigerators and
TVs;
 Office equipment, such as printers;
  Entertainment devices to control music or
television from a mobile device; and
 Fuel-monitoring systems.
Unsecured or under-secured devices give cyber
criminals an opportunity to intrude into private
networks.
From there, they can compromise devices
and overload devices, causing them to become
inoperable and can interfere with transactions.
The Better Business Bureau of Greater Houston
and South Texas is urging consumers to be mindful
of these vulnerabilities and take necessary steps to
keep your homes protected:
    Treat your smart devices like computers.
