Itgives you a lot to work with,but, also, my character Allie,doesn't have a daughter. Shehas a son,\" Shields, 61, said ina recent Zoom interview.\"So, this is the first sort offemale/maternal relationshipthat she's had and she doesn'twant to project onto Andi, butshe also wants to be able toshare with her. She wants tohelp her. So, that's so layeredin their relationship, which Ithink is just very touching andinteresting. In the Alps,once-mighty glaciers havereceded, \"summer skiing\" is just amemory, and new ski liftsroutinely come with snowmakingequipment. Places that historically\"never needed AC\" — likeScandinavia, the Low Countries,and Ireland — are retrofitting oldhotels to stay cool during heatwaves. Heat records are shatteredannually.As formerly \"extreme\" weatherbecomes commonplace, and“storms of the century” trumpeach other year after year, Europeis doing its best to adapt — and it’simportant for travelers to adapt,too. Here are some tips on beatingthe heat in Europe.First, plan your trip with weatherin mind, both in terms of locationand timing. \"Coolcations\" —traveling to cooler climates duringhot months — are trendy thesedays, but to me, that’s just timelesstravel smarts. Save July andAugust for the Alps, Britain,Ireland, and northern Europe.You’ll share outdoor patios withsouthern Europeans escapingsoaring temperatures back home— and locals, eager to stretch outin the rare hometown sunshine.But for hot destinations — like theMediterranean countries — visit atcooler times. Italy and Spain canbe balmy even in shoulder seasonmonths like May and October. Butin March or November, it’spleasantly mild. Check the climatecharts and, if your timing isflexible, consider pushing to theedges of the hottest times. Youmight notice that places likeairports and shopping malls aren’trefrigerated like back home —they’re just cool enough. So evenif your hotel has AC, don’t expectit to be Texas-style, where’s-mysweater robust.To help reduce their carbonfootprint, some cities prohibit ACoutside of the hottest summermonths. Usually, you won’t need itanyway — but if you encounter anout-of-season heat wave, adjustyour expectations. When youcheck into your \"air-conditioned\"Venetian hotel on a 75-degree dayin October, your receptionist mayjust shrug and say, \"Open thewindow.\"These days, with America’s “drill,baby, drill” mentality underminingthe global fight against climatechange, it’s bad style for a Yankeeto complain about air-con. So ifit’s still just too stuffy in yourroom, find ways to adapt. ManyEuropean cultures make the bedwith a heavy duvet and no topsheet. If the front desk doesn’thave sheets to borrow, make oneyourself by stripping the cover offthe poofy duvet. You can also askreception to borrow a fan — butthese are first-come, first-served,so don’t wait until you’resweltering late at night.When you leave the room to gosightseeing, draw the blinds. It’salso customary to turn off the AC,to reduce energy consumption. (Itmay turn off automatically whenyou remove your key card fromthe power slot.) Meanwhile, timeoutdoor and exposed activities —such as exploring sunbakedancient ruins or walking aroundthe top of the town wall — for therelative cool of morning orevening. Either way, bringsunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and arefillable bottle. Stay hydrated.Above all, we travelers mustreckon honestly with the roletravel plays in contributing to theclimate crisis. Transatlantic flightsleave a serious carbon footprint.Do your best to travel in a way thatminimizes your impact, like takingenergy-efficient trains instead ofgas-guzzling flights. And backhome, look for ways to help.
