Historical Walking Tours The Kenosha County Historical Society presents three historic walking tours this summer. The tours typically lasts 90 minutes with a leisurely walk discussing the architectural and historical significance of the buildings. On the first Saturday of the month, May through October, the Third Avenue Historic District walking tour starts at 11am. The Third Avenue Historic District is one of four historic districts designated in the City of Kenosha. The district features Kenosha’s early 20th century mansions along the Lake Michigan shore. This area was the residential choice for many of Kenosha’s most important industrialists. On Second Saturdays, May through October, at 11am, enjoy a walking tour of the Library Park historical district. The Library Park Historic District is one of four historic districts designated in the City of Kenosha. The district contains many individually outstanding examples of nineteenth century and early twentieth century architecture. New this year are the Northside Walking Tours on the fourth Sundays of each month at 1pm. Learn about how the Harborside neighborhood transformed from a industrial behemoth to the business district today. Reservations for either Walking Tour must be made in advance and the cost is $10 per person. Contact the Kenosha History Center: 262-654-5770.    Anderson Arts Center Anderson Arts Center completed a $4.3 million preservation and modernization project in 2019. The historic French Tudor mansion features local and regional art exhibits, kids summer art camp, ballroom dance classes, music classes, children's art classes, holiday special events, and more. The gift shop offers unique and handcrafted jewelry, furniture, ceramics, artwork, purses, cards, photography, scarves, sculptures, baskets, quilts, mosaics and much more! The Anderson Arts Center, a part of Kemper Center, is dedicated to the support and promotion of all arts: fine art, music, dance, literature and drama. The Center, which opened in 1992, seeks to increase awareness of the arts and contribute to arts education in the community by sponsoring performances, exhibitions, workshops, lectures and special events. The 9,000 square foot mansion began life as a private residence. The majestic ceilings and large, open expanses of wall space, which were distinctive features of the mansion, now lend themselves perfectly to the display of art work. In its history, the Anderson Arts Center has evolved into a full-service, multifunctional arts center, showcasing the work of a variety of local, regional and national artists. Admission is free to tour the mansion; donations gratefully accepted. Hours are Tuesday - Sunday, 1pm - 4pm Note: there is a new handicapped accessible entrance, however, the second floor is not handicapped accessible. Durkee Mansion Tours The 1860s await you in great splendor and elegance in this lovingly restored Victorian mansion along the shores of Lake Michigan, at 6501 Third Ave. Stroll through the halls of this magnificent home of Charles Durkee, Wisconsin's Civil War era Senator. The Durkee Mansion, one of Kenosha’s unique historical landmarks, is a cream brick Italianate, Victorian style home located on the lakefront. Recently elegantly redecorated in the 1860’s period, this home built for Charles Durkee features the largest suspension stairway in the state; as well as, unique fireplaces in the 2nd floor bedrooms, parquet floors and louvered windows. Charles Durkee was a very influential pioneer, businessman, politician and patron of the arts. Although he and his wife only lived in the home for four years, it is a monument to his dedication to improving life, liberties and education. In fact, after his death, it became housing for students of the all girls school. Open for self-guided tours Saturdays and Sundays this summer from 1:30 - 4pm, 1st and 3rd weekends. Call to confirm schedule at 262-925- 8040. Free admission; donations gratefully accepted.
