Contact the Kenosha History Center: 262-654-5770. Kenosha History Center Flashback! \"Owl's Club - beach picnic\" by Louis Milton Thiers, undated (probably the 1890s). Likely taken near Jacob’s Island (modern-day Alford Park or possibly the Carthage campus). The image may be reversed; if so, it could be looking north toward Racine. The view from Alford Park in that direction appears quite similar, though the area is now developed and was largely open at the time. The reference to the “Owl’s Club” is less certain. While there was an Order of Owls, it was a male-only fraternal organization and does not align with this group, which includes women. Other later establishments—such as an Owl Club bar near the present-day Lee Plumbing site or the Owl Café opened by Louis Cairo—date to the 20th century and are likely unrelated. A more plausible explanation is that this “Owls Club” refers to one of Racine’s late 19th- or early 20th-century social card clubs, similar to the Market Street Whist Club or the Octagon Card Club. The group’s apparent social class and composition fit well within that context. Some individuals may be identifiable: one man could be Frank Lyman, and another may be Thiers’ brother, though the image quality makes confirmation difficult. Notably, members of this group do not appear to be associated with Simmons, despite the existence of an Owl Club connected to early Simmons activities. They may simply have adopted the name “Owls” in the spirit of late nights and sociability—though perhaps not quite “superb.” For your daily Kenosha flashback, follow the Kenosha History Center on Facebook.
