Page 4 HAPPENINGS May 16, 2024 www.hap2it.com Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove said their movie, Mother of the Bride, on Netflix on Thursday, reminded them of previous roles in The Blue Lagoon and iCarly, respectively. The film's wedding takes place on a island in Thailand and was filmed on location. Shields' 1980 coming-of-age film was filmed on Turtle Island, Fiji. "Our feet were burning," Shields, 58, said in a Zoom interview about the sand in Thailand. "That did remind me of being in Fiji." Mother of the Bride has a larger cast than Blue Lagoon, which was about a boy (Christopher Atkins) and girl (Shields) stranded on a deserted island. Still, Shields said, the cast and crew of Mother of the Bride bonded in similar ways. "None of the crew really spoke English, and all of a sudden we're thrown with this group of people living one door away from each other," Shields said. "That was very reminiscent where all of our spare time was also spent with each other." In Mother of the Bride, Shields plays Lana, a scientist who finds out her daughter, Emma, (Cosgrove) is engaged after Emma returns from a year abroad in the U.K. Emma develops an Instagram account, sponsored by a travel company. Cosgrove, 30, starred as a teenage Internet phenomenon on the sitcom iCarly, which recently enjoyed a three-season revival. She said Carly was more social media savvy than Emma. "I feel like Emma would be a good employee for Carly," Cosgrove said. "Emma would probably want to help run Carly's YouTube channel or her Instagram account." Emma and Lana have a lot to catch up on, but Cosgrove and Shields come from similar career backgrounds. Both entered the entertainment industry as children, Shields as a model and Cosgrove in the movie School of Rock. Cosgrove said she found Shields "really easy to talk to and get along with." Shields said she remembered how challenging it was to be seen as an adult after debuting as a child, so she wanted to give Cosgrove the recognition she'd wished for. Cosgrove was "the little girl that I watched with my girls on iCarly, I wanted to make sure I stayed away from that and met her as the young woman that she is and as the actor that she is," Shields said. As a mother to two daughters, Shields said she could understand Lana's conflict about Emma's impending nuptials. Neither of Shields' daughters are married, but Shields said she could extrapolate the anxiety about such milestones. "It's a very fraught place to be as a mom," Shields said, further joking, "It's a horror film. Mother of the Bride is a scary movie." In actuality, Mother of the Bride is a comedy, and Shields performs a lot of the film's slapstick, falling into ponds and doing spit takes. Shields fought for one comical scene in which Lana struggles to navigate a bridesmaids dress. "We were going into overtime and they were going to just pull it," Shields said. "I was like, 'I'll do it in one take. Give me two cameras.' I just went for it. The slide off the bed is my favorite." Cosgrove is not married, either. However, she said the multiple takes for Mother of the Bride prepared her for a wedding day. "We did the wedding scene 50 times, so I keep telling everyone I'm ready if I ever get married now," Cosgrove said. "I know exactly what to do. I'm fully prepared." By Fred Topel 'Bride' reminded stars Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove of their past favorites Miranda Cosgrove and Brooke Shields star in the Netflix original film "Mother of the Bride." Born Brooke Christa Shields May 31, 1965 (age 58) New York City, NY As the daughter of actress and model Teri Shields and businessman Francics Shields, Brooke began as a child model at 11 months old. At the age of five days, her mother openly stated, “She’s the most beautiful child and I’m going to help her with her career.” She made her feature film debut in the 1976 horror film “Alice Sweet Alice.” The following year, she worked with Woody Allen on his film “Annie Hall,” but the scene was cut. As a prepubescent girl, Shields was the centerpiece for a wide controversy after her nude appearance in the 1978 film “Pretty Baby,” and on the cover of Playboy magazine. This continued into her teens when she appeared in racy print and TV ads for Calvin Klein jeans. And for the 1980 film “The Blue Lagoon,” Shields later testified that older body doubles were used in some of the film. In 1983, she took a break from acting to attend Princeton University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s in French literature. Shields landed her own hit with the NBC sitcom “Suddenly Susan”, which ran for 93 episodes over four seasons. FYI Brooke Shields Born Miranda Taylor Cosgrove May 14, 1993 (age 30) Los Angeles, California Cosgrove began her career at the age of seven, starting with numerous television commercials. She made her acting debut as Summer in the 2003 comedy “School of Rock.” She was soon after cast in her first major television role in the Nickelodeon series Drake & Josh. Her popularity grew and she made numerous guest appearances on other Nick shows. leading to her own starring series iCarly, which premiered in fall 2007. Her debut as a recording artist began with the iCarly theme songs “Leave It All To Me.” Her debut studio album,Sparks Fly, was released in April 2010 to positive reviews from critics. The album featured the single "Kissin U" which peaked at number 54 on theBillboardHot 100and was certified gold. You may know her voice as Margo in the Despicable Me film series. In 2021, Cosgrove revived the iCarly series for Paramount+, where it would run for three seasons. FYI Miranda Cosgrove

Nationally touring comedian and producer of “The Future of Comedy Show”, Mike Ball, is coming to the Kenosha Comedy Club May 24th and 25th! Mike Ball started his journey as an intern for Pauly Shore in Los Angeles and has since carved an impressive path in comedy. He’s opened for the legendary Ralphie May, starred on the The Dirty at 12:30 show in Vegas, and his own show featured in multiple venues all over the US. Expect lots of crowd interaction and guitar improv! Q: What is your favorite part about being a comedian and performing at shows? A: I just love making people laugh, it makes me feel good when people are leaving after enjoying time with their friends and family. I also like the traveling aspect and getting to perform in many different places, my favorite being The Virgin Islands, New York and California! Q: Can you share with us a past show that was most memorable? A: I will never forget the show that happened under a full moon on Friday the 13th. An elderly lady passed away right after I got off the stage, and it was a really somber moment. Her family came up to me afterwards and said, “She wasn’t doing too well but did love coming to your shows. She went out laughing and that’s a great way to go!” I guess I really killed it up there that night. Q: Who is someone you idolize in the industry? A: Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, and Ralphie May have always been my favorites. But Ralphie May definitely had the biggest impact on me comedy wise, I got to meet him 3 times. After the first two times meeting him and receiving the best comedy advice ever, I got to open for him in Saginaw, Michigan. Q: What makes your style of comedy unique? A: If you asked people who’ve come to many of my shows they would probably say that it’s always a different show. My interest in the audience makes the show more about them! Q: If you weren’t a comedian what else could you see yourself doing? A: Stay at home dad. I just had my first child, Maria Elizabeth Ball, and I could hang out with her and her mom all day! By Elaina Myers take five w/Mike Ball Mike Ball takes the stage at the Kenosha Comedy Club Friday and Saturday, May 24th & 25th at 8pm. Page 6 HAPPENINGS May 16, 2024 www.hap2it.com Actor Steve Buscemi randomly attacked in New York City Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos, Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski and Fargo actor Steve Buscemi was recently punched in the face by a man in a random act of violence on the streets of New York City, his publicist confirmed. "Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Mid-Town Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city," Buscemi's publicist said in a statement. "He is ok and appreciates everyone's well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of New York," the statement said. CNN said the 66-year-old actor was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. He was treated for bruising, swelling, and bleeding in his left eye. No arrests have been made yet. Buscemi has starred in dozens of movies. He is also a former New York City firefighter, who helped out at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks on New York. Teen vaping rates fall Vaping rates among U.S. kids in high school fell to 5% in 2021, the latest year for which data is available. That's down from a peak of 7.2% of teens who vaped in 2019, a new report finds. However, the 5% vaping rate observed in 2021 is still more than double the 2% rate observed among teens in 2015. The data also showed a pronounced switch in which teens are more prone to vape. In 2015, boys were more prone to the habit than girls were (2.8% vs 1.1%, respectively). However, by 2021 girls were more likely to vape than boys (5.6% vs 4.5%, respectively), the study found. Man ordered to hide his boat has vessel painted on new fence A California man ordered by his city to conceal the boat parked in his driveway with a fence hired his artist neighbor to paint a photo-realistic image of the vessel in an act of r e b e l l i o u s compliance. Etienne Constable said the boat he uses for fishing was regularly parked in his Seaside driveway for about four years before he received a letter from the city informing him of a municipal code requiring boats and trailers to be "screened on the side and front by a six-foot-high fence." Constable said his initial reaction to the letter was anger, but he then spoke to his neighbor, mural artist Hanif Panni, and arrived at a creative solution. Constable had a fence installed to block his driveway, and Panni, who creates art under the name Hanif Wondir, painted a photo-realistic image of the boat and the rest of the driveway on the road-facing side of the fence. Panni, who described the project as an attempt to create "an illusion," posted photos of the finished work to social media, where they quickly went viral. The project earned fans including Nick Borges, Seaside's acting city manager, who called Constable to compliment him on the creative solution. Borges said he had seen the photos on social media before he realized they were from a local home. "I thought, 'Wow, that's pretty creative.' I laughed at it, and then I started getting calls from local media," Borges said. He said the letter received by Constable was the result of actions taken last year. Borges said the city had received numerous complaints about lax code enforcement, so someone was hired to investigate and contact violators. Man rescues waterslide from defunct theme park A fan of Ohio's defunct Coney Island theme park decided to keep a small part of the attraction's memory alive by purchasing an entire waterslide. Adam Woltermann, who spent five seasons working at the Cincinnati water park, said he was dismayed to learn it would be closing permanently in December 2023 and all of the slides, pools and rides would be demolished. Woltermann purchased the Silver Bullet, a waterslide built at the park in 1945. "I love the history of it and just Cincinnati history in general and I just thought it would be a cool piece to own," he said. He had the slide professionally removed and transported to a secret location, where he took some photographs to share on social media. GameStop shares soar 74% GameStop stock surged more than 74% this week after the person who sparked the computer game store's stunning 2021 run reappeared on social media. GameStop stock closed up $12.99 to end the rally at $30.45, forcing short sellers to lose nearly $1 billion in the video game retailer. Shares were trading up another 11% in after-market trading. According to data firm S3 Partners, short-selling hedge funds suffered a mark-to-market loss of $838 million. The massive GameStop rally was triggered by the reappearance of "Roaring Kitty." Keith Gill, known by his online persona "Roaring Kitty," posted a picture of a gamer looking intensely at his computer on his X account with no worded message on Sunday evening. The post went viral with 9,400 comments, 21,000 shares and 78,000 likes in 15 hours. coast to coast NBA's Glen 'Big Baby' Davis sentenced to 40 months for healthcare fraud A federal court sentenced former NBA champion Glen "Big Baby" Davis to 40 months in prison for his part in a scheme to defraud the league's healthcare plan. The judge also ordered Davis to pay $80,000 in restitution. Davis was one of 18 former NBA players charged in October 2021 with filing almost $4 million in fraudulent health claims between 2017 and 2020. A court in November found Davis guilty of wire fraud, health care fraud, conspiracy to commit health care fraud and conspiracy to make false statements related to health care matters. Former player Terrence Williams was the assumed ringleader of the conspiracy, according to the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney's Office. He was sentenced to 10 years last August. U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss in 2021 alleged Williams obtained fraudulent medical and dental invoices, which he passed along to Davis and the other players, who then submitted the claims to the NBA, which paid most of the claims. Each person tried to claim between $65,000 to $420,000 in reimbursements for treatments they never received, according to Strauss. Davis and Williams ended up slapped with the most prison time out of any of the other players involved in the scheme. Former NBA guard Will Bynum last month received a sentence of just 18 months after lying to a jury while under oath. Davis helped the Boston Celtics win the 2008 championship and retired from the NBA after his final season in 2014-15. Glen Davis Steve Buscemi

Mateo made it into the boys’ top 10 list for the first time, becoming the sixth-most popular boys’ name in 2023 and edging Benjamin off the list, according to recently released data from the Social Security Administration. “Mateo had a huge jump. … The fact that Mateo went from No. 11 in 2022 to No. 6 in 2023 is insane. We don’t see that very often at the top of the charts,” says Sophie Kihm, editor-in-chief of the baby name website Nameberry. Names leading the list don’t tend to shift quickly, Kihm says. Liam and Olivia are topping the rankings for the fifth consecutive year. And Mateo is the only new name to reach the highest tier. The name’s inclusion on the boys’ top 10 list also marks a milestone, Kihm says. “It’s pretty much the first identifiably Latino name, too, at least on the boys’ side,” she says. More than 11,000 babies in the US were named Mateo last year, the highest number on record, according to the Social Security Administration. The name, which means “gift of God,” began ranking in the top 1,000 in 1995, Kihm says. Two decades later, it had reached the top 100. And in recent years, its popularity has intensified at an even faster rate, Kihm says. Top Baby Names in 2023 source: Social Security Administration Boys 1. Liam 2. Noah 3. Oliver 4. James 5. Page 12 HAPPENINGS May 16, 2024 www.hap2it.com Letitia Wright said therapy helped her deal with the emotional weight of her character in Aisha, in select theaters and available on digital video-on-demand. Wright, 30, plays a Nigerian refugee going through Ireland's direct provision system for immigration. The direct provision system grants potential immigrants housing and an allowance, but also requires them to follow strict protocols while attending hearings over months and years, "Carrying the truth that so many women have experienced what Aisha's going through, just the emotional aspects of it all, that was tough," Wright said in a recent Zoom interview. Wright said she found speaking to a therapist and her friends about the role helpful. Once she completed filming, Wright said, she had to trust that she had done right by Aisha. "I gave to her as best as I could," Wright said, adding that now Aisha can "live on without me." That therapy was so productive, she said, that she continues to incorporate it in her work. "It's been really helpful for me to process characters and let them go," Wright said. Aisha begins with Aisha living in a government-funded group home and working at a beauty salon. She has fled Nigeria, where loan sharks killed her father and continue to look for her and her mother. Wright, who is Guyanese, said she spoke with many women who had been through the direct provision system. "I understood the positives and the negatives of it," Wright said. "They will tell you there's always some type of obstacle, and you have to be very strong to overcome it." The film shows such obstacles as Aisha waits for a decision on her appeal to remain in Ireland. The front desk clerk makes her wait to receive her mail until she is nearly late for her bus to work. Aisha also struggles to get halal food for her diet, and her supervisor moves her to a different facility with no transportation to her job. Wright said such frustrations are common in the direct provision system. "It can break your spirit day after day," Wright said. "It's hard to feel safe and it's hard to feel like you're being heard when someone's clearly ignoring you." At Aisha's immigration hearings, she must recount the violent incidents over and over that made her flee Nigeria. Immigration agents scrutinize her story for any inconsistencies from one telling to the next. "If you get anything wrong, they label it as a lie," Wright said. "What's being misunderstood is what trauma does to the mind and to your memory, too." Wright said trauma requires a more complex understanding than yes or no, right or wrong answers to questions. Wright said remembering traumatic stories in such detail also slows the healing process for survivors like Aisha. "The process of trying to move on is really tough because they require you to know it in detail and not make a mistake," Wright said. "The scrutiny is quite harsh." Ireland's immigration officers also suggest Aisha should trust in the protective services offered by the Nigerian government. Wright said she believed the immigration officers meant well, but Aisha struggles to explain the reality that she would be vulnerable if she returned. "If home were safe, she definitely will be home because she loves her home," Wright said. "She's trying to bring them into her world." Wright said the direct provision system is something most people will never experience themselves. Through showing Aisha's challenges in the system, Wright said, she hopes the film makes others care about the struggles of people like Aisha. "So people are more educated, more informed and they can have more compassion for people who experience it," she said. Aisha is the kind of independent film Wright was making before she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the Marvel films, Wright plays Shuri, Black Panther's sister. Before 2018's Black Panther, Wright starred in films like Urban Hymn and Victim, and episodes of British series Top Boy, Humans, Black Mirror and Doctor Who. "Where the good stories are, I want to be there," Wright said. Next, Wright is preparing to play boxer Ramala Ali in the film, In the Shadows. "She became one of the first ever Muslim national champions of the U.K.," Wright said. "Now she's on her way to getting her world title." By Fred Topel Therapy helped Letitia Wright with 'Aisha,' subsequent roles Nicolas Cage to play Spider-Man Noir in live-action series Nicolas Cage will play SpiderMan Noir in a new Prime Video and MGM+ series. Prime Video announced that Cage, 60, will star in the upcoming show Noir. Noir is a live-action series based on the Marvel Comics character SpiderMan Noir, an alternate version of Spider-Man living during the Great Depression. The show "tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city's one and only superhero," according to a press release. Cage previously voiced SpiderMan Noir in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). "Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers," Amazon MGM Studios head of television Vernon Sanders said. "The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way." Noir will mark Cage's first starring TV role. The actor's recent film credits include Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Dream Scenario. Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor star in the film “Aisha”

Snot's Landing The idea of erecting a pane of clear glass or plastic between open trays of food and self-serving diners, aka "a sneeze guard," dates to at least the early 1950s, albeit to mixed reactions. The first patented sneeze guard debuted in 1959, and in the '60s, the Food and Drug Administration began mandating their use around the launch of the self-serve salad bar. Do the guards work? Well, sort of, which is why they remain mandatory for buffets and salad bars. For expectorating adults looking down, a guard may block big droplets but work less well for shorter people and children. Germs can also come via dirty plates and utensils, or foods not kept sufficiently chilled. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when translucent shields popped up everywhere and made the world a giant salad bar, efficacy studies found the guards more often produced a sense of false security. Blame it on the microbial nature of the virus. The guards did not stop the flow of tiny aerosol particles but rather impeded normal air flow and ventilation and, worse, sometimes redirected airborne germs to adjacent people. Stories for the Waiting Room Remember the Presidential Fitness Test? For generations of school kids, it was the bane of their young bodies. The test was the brainchild of Jack Kelly Sr., a former Olympic rower (and father of actress Grace Kelly) who persuaded politicians that American youth were physically ill-prepared to confront the Soviet menace. In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower created the President's Council on Youth Fitness, and his successor, John F. Kennedy, put some muscle into the effort. Generations of schoolchildren would suffer consequential trauma but maybe learn how to do a good set of pushups or run a mile. The original public program ran from 1956 to 2013. It has since been replaced with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which dumped the generic physical education approach for more individualized instruction and programs like those sponsored by the NFL and Michelle Obama. Fields (1880-1946; attributed) Sum Body Five facts about the flu. 1. You cannot get the flu from the vaccine. (The contained virus that triggers the immune response is dead.) 2. You can treat the flu (up to 48 hours after onset of symptoms) using antiviral medications. They don't eradicate the virus, but they do lessen symptoms. 3. The flu still kills approximately 36,000 Americans each year, usually the elderly, the very young or those with underlying medical conditions. 4. Unless your "stomach flu" comes with additional aches and fever, it's probably a gastrointestinal virus, not the seasonal flu variety. 5. You don't need to "starve a fever." There's no need to eat less, and steady nibbling on healthy foods could actually help the body recover. You will likely need to increase your fluid intake. Curtain Calls Roopkund Lake is in a remote valley in the Himalayas and notable for this fact: It contains the centuries-old bones of hundreds of people, both in the water and scattered along the shore. Various scenarios for the odd cemetery have been proposed, including one hypothesis that the bones belong to a group of passing pilgrims killed by giant hail stones during a ninth-century storm. That hypothesis has been refuted by DNA analyses that show the bones belong to at least three distinct groups of people covering several centuries of time. An explanation for the many massed skeletons remains elusive. The site is now at risk due to local efforts to make the lake a tourist destination, which have resulted in many skeletons being disturbed by trekkers and souvenir hunters. Page 14 HAPPENINGS May 16, 2024 www.hap2it.com Q: I’m curious. There are several abandoned homes in my area. They are/were beautiful, but year after year, they sit empty. Similarly, there are a number of empty storefronts in my area, all with substantially high, competitive rates. Why leave these spaces empty? Why not lower the rates on the rents, rather than letting these properties sit, vacant, year after year? Why not sell the homes for a dollar? Are the owners getting a kickback from the government because these properties are losing money for them? I can understand, in the case of homes, there could be many reasons (like probate, etc.), but storefronts? A: Let’s start with the homes in your area that you say are abandoned. In many instances, and in some neighborhoods, homes might be truly abandoned. We saw this 15 years ago, during the Great Recession, in cities like Detroit, where blocks of homes were abandoned by their owners, and the city eventually tore them down. In some situations, these homes aren’t really abandoned. The owners have died and the next of kin were, perhaps, never even aware that their relatives owned the homes. In other cases, the owners may be non-residents or undocumented. They may have purchased the homes but have perhaps died, leaving no heirs, or have left the country. And, in some cases, the owners simply don’t want to sell these homes and believe that holding on to them may give them greater value in the future. Even if they stay empty for years. A big part of the answer lies in these homes’ property taxes. Are the owners current? If not, then these homes might ultimately get sold to investors. But, that process can take several years to complete. In the meantime, homes and neighborhoods get run down, as do property values. So, there are many reasons why homes may be abandoned or look abandoned. You may also find that some homes may look abandoned, but people are still living in them. Seniors may live in a house, rarely leave it, and never take care of the exterior. So, they look abandoned. We have seen a house that looks abandoned — except for the occasional light that goes on. The house hasn’t had any work done to the exterior in more than 20 years. The paint is peeling. The brickwork needs tuckpointing. The roof looks like it should be replaced. We’ve never seen anyone exit the property. A car in the driveway hasn’t moved in years. It has a flat tire. In some communities, local governmental agencies work with owners to get those properties sold and into the hands of new buyers who want to renovate and live in those homes. But it’s not always easy to facilitate that transition. It takes time to find the rightful owners, to get the paperwork in order, and to find a buyer willing to do the work. On the other hand, commercial real estate is an entirely different kettle of fish. Business decisions generally determine whether a property remains vacant or not. For example, if a tenant decides to move out of a space but continues to pay rent, the landlord won’t fill the space with another tenant while the existing tenant continues to pay rent. Sometimes, landlords have various properties available for rent in an area and are afraid that lowering the rent on one property will force them to lower the rent on all of their properties when it comes time to renew leases. Commercial properties are valued based, in great part, on the rent they generate. Lower rent levels can have a huge negative impact on the value of their properties. It can make it very difficult for the owner to refinance or sell. In fact, lower valuations could trigger default provisions in the owners’ loan documents. Loan documents frequently contain provisions that tie the performance of the buildings to the lender’s agreeing to continue to loan money on the property. So, owners may prefer to keep a retail store empty than admit to a lender that their property value has gone down. Also, commercial leases tend to be longer term. Sometimes these leases last five to 20 years. The landlord does not want to agree to a lower rent today that will reduce the value of their income stream for all of those years. They might prefer to wait for the right tenant than agree to a 20-year bad deal. Finally, there is basic supply and demand. Sometimes there are just too many stores available and too few retailers wanting those spaces. Even lowering the rent won’t take care of that situation, as local economic forces make it very tough to find tenants. Why do property owners let homes and storefronts sit empty? Page 18 HAPPENINGS May 16, 2024 www.hap2it.com Despite its population of 1.5 million, Munich (or “München,” as it’s called in German) feels small. This big-city elegance is possible because of its determination to be pedestrian – and bike-friendly, and because of a law that allows buildings taller than the cathedral’s towers only in the city’s outskirts. Even Oktoberfest, the world’s biggest beer party, is not corporate run but city run – leaving it free, easygoing, and hell-bent on having fun rather than making money. I like to start my visits in the sunlit main square called Marienplatz (“Mary’s Square”), which gives you a fine look at the glory of Munich. I love to take in the ornate facades of the gray, pointy Old Town Hall and the Neo-Gothic New Town Hall, with its beloved glockenspiel – only a century or so old – that recreates a royal wedding from the 16th century. At outdoor cafés, people linger, sharing the square with the birds and the breeze. The oldest church in town, St. Peter’s, is a few steps from Marienplatz. Along with much of Munich, it was badly damaged in World War II. As part of the soul of the city (according to a popular song, “Munich is not Munich without St. Peter’s”), the church was lovingly rebuilt – half with Augustiner beer money – and the altar and ceiling frescoes were marvelously restored. After the war, people who lived in Germany’s heavily bombed cities debated how they’d rebuild. Should they reconstruct the old towns, or bulldoze and start over from scratch? Frankfurt voted to go modern with a grid street plan (and is today nicknamed "Germany’s Manhattan"), but the people of Munich rebuilt their old town center. City leaders took care to preserve Munich’s original street plan and re-create the medieval steeples, Neo-Gothic facades, and Neoclassical buildings. They blocked off the city center to cars, built the people-friendly U-Bahn (subway) system, and opened up Europe’s first great pedestrianonly zone (Kaufingerstrasse). Just behind the rebuilt St. Peter’s, you can experience smalltown Munich at the Viktualienmarkt, long a favorite with locals for fresh produce and friendly service. While this most expensive real estate in town could have been overrun by fast-food places, Munich keeps the rent low so these old-time shops can carry on. Browse your way through the stalls and pavilions as you make your way to the market’s main landmark, the white-and-bluestriped maypole. Munich has been a market town since its earliest days as a stop on the salt-trade crossroads. By the 1400s, the market bustled, most likely beneath a traditional maypole, just like you can see today. As was standard in any village, the decorations that line each side of the pole tell you which merchants are doing business in the market. Munich’s maypole gives prominence to a horsedrawn wagon bringing in beer barrels. And you can’t have a kegger without coopers – on the maypole are four cute guys dancing: the merry barrel makers. Besides salt, Munich gained a reputation for beer. By the 15th century, more than 30 breweries pumped out the golden liquid, brewed by monks, who were licensed to sell it. They stored their beer in cellars under courtyards kept cool by the shade of bushy chestnut trees – a tradition Munich’s breweries still stick to. Today, the Viktualienmarkt’s centerpiece seems to be its beer garden. Its picnic tables are filled with hungry and thirsty locals, all in the shade of those traditional chestnut trees. Walking through Munich, you’ll understand why it is consistently voted one of Germany’s most livable cities – safe, clean, cultured, a university town, built on a people scale, and close to the beauties of nature. Though it’s the capital of Bavaria and a major metropolis, Munich’s low-key atmosphere has led Germans to dub it “Millionendorf” – the “village of a million people.” By Rick Steves Munich: Germany's biggest village travel Munich's bustling main square, Marienplatz, is a lively pedestrian zone of sights, shopping, and restaurants. The American Automobile Association, better known as AAA, released data which estimates nearly 44 million American travelers will leave town in what will be the second highest Memorial Day travel forecast since 2000 when data was first available. "We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said in a release. AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will go 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which they said was a 4% increase from 2023 and comes close to matching the record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers in 2005. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead," the AAA executive added. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this Memorial Day weekend, a 4.8% increase over last year and a 9% jump compared to 2019. "This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005," AAA advised travelers. In addition, AAA said nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation which includes buses, cruise ships and trains, a 5.6% increase compared to 2023. A recent American Express Travel report found that travelers are more focused on creating the right itineraries for their vacations, leaning towards sporting events, unusual adventures and solo travels that are taken on a whim. However, the cost of traveling, including airfare and food costs is likely to keep rising with some companies focusing more on affordability as inflation is viewed as slowly getting under control. By Chris Benson AAA says 2024 to be second highest Memorial Day travel forecast since 2000
