Why avoid seeing each other before the wedding?

This tradition stems from arranged marriages. Marriages were once
arranged for financial gain, and grooms were forbidden to see their brides

grooms found their brides unattractive. Today, some brides and grooms
continue to follow this tradition, while others throw caution to the wind
and see each other beforehand. Some even have photos taken of their “first

To ward off evil spirits, of course! Ancient Romans believed evil spirits
envied the happiness of new brides and were out to get them. Brides hid

a few inexpensive T-shirts for guests to sign.

Furniture is another great guestbook alternative. Almost anything will
work for the project from benches to chairs to tables. Guests could sign an
old steamer trunk, for example, and the couple could finish it by decoupag-
ing it with postcards from their honeymoon travels. When selecting a piece
of furniture to serve as the guestbook, couples need to make sure there is
plenty of space for guests to sign it.

Couples having a themed wedding will want to look for something that
fits within the theme. Seashells, for example, work well for beach wed-
dings. Guests can turn the shells over, sign them and slide them into a
wicker basket or a shallow bowl. Couples end up with a great accessory
for their home and a memento of their wedding.

Couples who are sports fans might want to look into having a jersey,
pennant or some sort of equipment signed. Who could resist smiling dur-
ing a game of bowling when using a ball, shoes and bag signed by the
guests who attended their wedding?

Ceramics are another idea. Couples could drop by a local pottery shop
and arrange for a large platter, bowl or a set of coffee mugs for guests to
sign. When the wedding is over, couples could return to the pottery shop

era and get pictures of every side view. Most of your wedding photographs
will be of your face, neck and torso, so pay close attention to how the dress
looks in those poses. If you want to add silliness to your day, try on the
most awful-looking (to you) dress, and laugh. Realizing that all dresses are
not for all brides, your selection of just the perfect one will get even easi-
er.

Many bridal consultants work on commission, and some may get
uncomfortably pushy. Be ready and be firm in your position as THE bride
who will make THE selection. If there is the least bit of pressure, simply
pull back. There probably isn’t another bride who is looking at THAT dress
and MAY buy it that evening. If there is indecision, have a casual lunch or
coffee, and if still unsure, sleep on it; tomorrow will have a fresh approach.

Wedding plans can get quite hectic; keeping the stress level minimal will
add to the good memories you’ll be making. And you sure can’t have too
many of those. Happy hunting.

Flower Girl Alternatives

Some brides simply cannot envision their walk down the aisle without a little
girl dressed to the nines strewing rose petals before them. They bestow the honor
on a young friend or family member, and more often than not, it goes well. Other
brides are not keen on the idea of having children in their wedding or have no real
good candidates to serve as their flower girl. Lucky for them, there are other
options.

A well-trained pet can make a great flower girl, or ringbearer, for that matter.
Who wouldn’t enjoy the sight of a bride’s beloved Pomeranian pup walking down
the aisle in a lacy floral collar? No petals would be strewn, but for venues that do
not allow the practice, having a pet for a flower girl might be ideal. Exotic pets
may serve as flower girls as well, providing they can be escorted, carried or rolled
down the aisle. For pets willing to be dressed up, there are dozens of formalwear
styles available from dresses and tuxedos to hats, veils and dressy collars and
leashes.

Performers are another option. Brides interested in making a spectacular
entrance can hire a juggler, acrobat, clown, etc. to serve as their flower girl. Who
wouldn’t enjoy receiving a rose from a ballet dancer pirouetting down the aisle or
a daisy pulled from a magician’s hat? Flower girl performers work rather well for
themed weddings, especially in venues that do not permit petals to be thrown.

Guests may also serve as flower girls. Baskets or bags of flower petals can be
placed randomly among the seating, attached to the ends of pews or handed out
at the guestbook. Whatever the method of delivery, guests will have access to
flower petals to scatter down the aisle. For venues that do not allow petals to be
strewn, guests may blow bubbles, ring miniature bells or sing softly. Brides just
need to make sure they note in the program what guests are to do with the items
provided.

Brides who have too many people to choose from may want to select a group
of kids to walk down the aisle in place of a flower girl or ringbearer. Who
wouldn’t take great delight in a 10-year-old pulling a small red wagon with his
two younger sisters in it? Small children’s choirs or junior bridesmaids are other
options.

These are just some of the alternatives to the flower girl tradition. With some
thought, brides are sure to come up with ideas of their own.
