Page 4 HAPPENINGS February 16, 2023 www.hap2it.com What might be the perfect way to describe Steve Hytner’s standup show February 24 and 25 at the Kenosha Comedy Club? Maybe “It’s the best!” Or perhaps “That’s gold!” Those are, of course, Hytner’s most enduring catchphrases from his guest-starring appearances on the classic TV sitcom Seinfeld, where he played Kenny Bania, a fellow comic Jerry didn’t much care for. So enduring has the grating character been in the minds of fans, Hytner said in a recent HAPPENINGS interview, he continues to be recognized for playing Bania – and he’s perfectly OK with that even though his career has encompassed much more than a single show. “I will be really honest with you,” he says. “If I walk out my door, somebody's going to scream, ‘That’s gold, Jerry!’ So to turn that into a negative, that's probably a bad idea. Right?” Hytner says a key to Seinfeld’s enduring popularity, driven by the content of the shows, was in the convictions of its leading man. “It is a unique show, and I think a lot of it is because of the characters, the actors, they just make it timeless,” he says, “Jerry was very specific about those characters. And who played them. If you had a great episode, but he didn't like you as a person, you weren't coming back. “So by the time we had the finale, which was basically a reunion show, not only was everybody good, but everybody was a good person. Jerry was really adamant that he only wanted to be around quality people. Hytner has a long list of credits in addition to Seinfeld that includes Working, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Friends, The King of Queens, Two and a Half Men, Dharma & Greg, The XFiles, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, That’s So Raven and Mike & Molly. A career highlight for him was working with Clint Eastwood in In the Line of Fire. “You can't get much better than that,” he says. ”I have been very, very fortunate. I've had some big breaks, and while people always think Seinfeld was the hugest break, I was working like crazy before Seinfeld. And while acting opportunities remain steady, Hytner says he’s refocused his attention for the moment on his stand-up career. “People ask why I’m focusing more on stand up, and I guess it’s because acting is the most collaborative art form -- there are other actors, writers, directors, producers, hair and makeup people. And stand up is the least collaborative art form. I think I'm just enjoying the least collaborative art form for a while.” Hytner began as a stage comic back in New York in the 1980s, before moving to Los Angeles and doing more acting. That led him, he explains, to take “a 20-year chunk off from stand up.” Now that he’s back before live crowds, he says “I just like it so much more than during my initial run.” “I have so much more to talk about now than when I was 22,” he notes. “You know, my entire act back then was, ‘Why won't you touch me?’ It was basically my life. And then, you know, as I got older, a little more typical here -- she still won't touch me, but I also have more to talk about.” He remembers when he was starting out, his quest led him to find anyplace, even if it wasn’t ideal, to tell his jokes. The experiences were valuable if not always comfortable. “There's nothing worse than doing a comedy show where people didn't come there necessarily for a comedy show,” he says. “I did one of those early in my career, a lot of people expecting a different kind of party, and it was brutal. One of the kids onstage was getting pelted with things and he said the absolute wrong thing to say, ‘One more thing comes up here and I'm out of here.’ “So, of course, nonstop for 45 minutes. “I've heard comedians say that they've appeared in like sports bars and you're competing with what's on the screens. But that was even worse.” So why do comedians on the way up take those gigs? “I remember those days, where you're just desperate for the stage time because comedians – especially comedians just starting out -- they're obsessed with the material and what the material is going to be. But you really need to stage time to figure out who you are up there. The audience wants to know who you are up there. I mean, you can't live and die by every joke unless you're somebody like George Carlin or Steven Wright. Hytner will have his space at Feb. 24 and 25 at the Kenosha Comedy Club at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 5125 6th Ave, Kenosha. Tickets are $20 apiece and can purchased at www.hap2it.com It’s a bargain price, because his show … It’s gold! www.hap2it.com February 16, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 5 Alcohol and Cancer Now that Dry January is over, most participants who were "sober-curious" have resumed their familiar consumption patterns, no doubt feeling good about giving their bodies a break from the known risks and harms of alcohol. Most folks, however, underappreciate the increased risk of several types of cancer caused by alcohol consumption. "All types of alcoholic beverages, including wine, increase cancer risk," said Andrew Seidenberg, a National Cancer Institute researcher who recently led a study on alcohol-cancer awareness that found, unfortunately, not much awareness. How does alcohol cause cancer? It contains ethanol, a known carcinogen, which can cause cancer in several ways, such as increasing estrogen levels, boosting the risk of breast cancer, or breaking down into compounds that damage DNA and cause liver, head and neck, and esophageal cancers. Seidenberg said public awareness campaigns similar to those in the past for smoking are needed. While 9 in 10 Americans are aware of the cancer risk associated with tobacco, only 1 in 3 is aware of the alcohol-cancer connection. Body of Knowledge When you kiss someone on the mouth, you use 146 muscles to pucker up and swap an estimated 80 million bacteria. It's estimated that the average person will spend roughly 20,000 minutes, or two weeks, kissing during a lifetime. But not everybody everywhere. In a 2015 study of 168 cultures, only 46% engaged in romantic kissing, primarily in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. Regular smooching was rare or nonexistent in much of Africa and Central and South America where the practice was broadly deemed "gross." Brain "Weathering" A new study in JAMA Neurology reports that the brains of Black adults in the U.S. age more quickly than those of white and Hispanic adults, showing features linked to Alzheimer's and other dementias earlier in life. The analyses, based on MRI scans, strengthen the case that vascular disease may be especially detrimental to brain health in Black populations. The cause is not believed to be genetic but rather associated with "weathering," the accumulations of racial stressors over time, said the scientists. He died two weeks later on Feb. 22, 1984. David Vetter had lived since birth in a protective, germ-free environment at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Born with a rare disorder called severe combined immunodeficiency, or SCID, David lacked T-cells. In 1999, Duke University researchers debuted a new treatment using transplanted bone marrow from a parent or sibling that now saves most SCID patients. Get Me That, Stat! Disparities in health research are well-documented, and some begin early. A study published in JAMA Network Open found that of more than 30,000 medical students who had published research work, women, Black and Hispanic students all were represented less than white males. The differences, said study authors, may lie with lack of mentorship, negative stereotypes and a devaluing of research ideas coming from women and people underrepresented in medicine. Page 6 HAPPENINGS February 16, 2023 www.hap2it.com Survivor advocate Kara Robinson Chamberlain said the film, The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story, now available on the Lifetime app and re-airing Saturday, February 18th at 5 p.m. on the Lifetime channel, reminded her of emotions she's buried since escaping from a kidnapping. Robinson Chamerblain was kidnapped in 2002 by Richard Evonitz when she was 15 years old. Robinson Chamberlain was on the set of the film in Winnipeg while they filmed her mother, Debra (Cara Buono), visiting the police station and reuniting with Kara (Katie Douglas). "Seeing those scenes filmed really reignited some emotions of what I was feeling," Robinson Chamberlain told UPI in a recent phone interview. "So some of those gaps between my memories filled in a little bit." Evonitz kept Robinson Chamberlain in a plastic container. After multiple rapes by Evonitz, Robinson Chamberlain was able to escape from his apartment the following morning while he slept. Robinson Chamberlain said she advised the production on details as specific as the type of container Evonitz kept her in and what she was wearing when he kidnapped her. Robinson said the film helped her remember the feelings between those details. "My memory functions kind of like snapshots, so a series of photographs," Robinson Chamberlain said. "It's kind of like a flip book where you've lost half the pages. Being there on set, it was like some of those pages were filled in." Robinson Chamberlain said revisiting those events for the movie were not triggering, because she already felt emotionally dissociated from her ordeal. "I didn't feel traumatized, so I didn't want everyone to treat me like I was traumatized," Robinson Chamberlain said. "It was almost more problematic and more traumatic for me to go home and for everyone to treat me differently." The Girl Who Escaped shows how Robinson Chamberlain gathered information about her surroundings and endeared herself to Evonitz by helping with housework. After escaping, Robinson Chamberlain said, she learned that she was exhibiting natural threat responses. In addition to fight or flight, Robinson Chamberlain said humans also respond to threats by freezing and appeasing. WebMD defines appeasing, or fawning, as being overly helpful, as Robinson Chamberlain did with Evonitz's housework. "Freeze was this idea of freezing my emotions," Robinson Chamberlain said. "Find a way for him to become complacent. We want him to become complacent, and then you'll be able to escape." Robinson Chamberlain said those responses were not conscious. Robinson Chamberlain said she hopes the film illustrates natural coping mechanisms. "It's a function of your autonomic nervous system," Robinson Chamberlain said. "Not something that you do consciously, not something that you can choose to do. ... It's something everyone has." Evonitz died by suicide when the police caught him. For the 15 years after her escape, Robinson Chamberlain worked as a school resource officer, sex crime and child abuse investigator and survivor's 's advocate, having graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Robinson Chamberlain retired from that work when her second son was born. She continues to do public speaking on survivor's issues, and also discovered she still had some trauma to address. Physical symptoms Robinson Chamberlain experienced for 20 years after her kidnapping included shortness of breath, chest tightening and trouble breathing. Robinson Chamberlain saw an eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapist. The EMDR Institute explains the psychotherapy process focuses on the physical stimuli of traumatic memories. "We did EMDR therapy on the moment that my captor put me back in the box to make a phone call to his wife," Robinson Chamberlain said. "That's the most traumatic part of my captivity, honestly, because I thought I was going to die." The treatment, Robinson Chamberlain said, allowed her to breath easier after 20 years. Robinson Chamberlain said after her second child was born, she also experienced postpartum depression. Her sons are now 6 and 9. "My life felt out of control which obviously is very triggering for anyone who's been a victim of any kind," Robinson Chamberlain said. "I consciously was suppressing my emotions." The film focuses on the period during which Robinson Chamberlain now says she was compartmentalizing her kidnapping -- after her escape. She said she now recognizes that compartmentalizing also was a trauma response. "It almost feels like talking about something that happened to someone else," Robinson Chamberlain said. "There's not a lot of emotional connection to what happened." After advising Lifetime on their telling of her story, she launched a podcast with partner Kimberly Corban, another survivor. Their Survivor's Guide to True Crime focuses on the survivors' perspectives of crimes. Their first guest is kidnap survivor and Girl Who Escaped executive producer Elizabeth Smart. In the weeks ahead, Survivor's Guide aims to include a diverse array of survivor experiences. "We're also two white women," Robinson Chamberlain said. "We're also aware that that doesn't represent all of the people who have become victims in this world." Robinson Chamberlain said her purpose with the movie and the podcast was to provide future survivors with resources should they experience similar traumas. She said that when she escaped, she did not see any depictions of her fight, flight, freeze and appease approach. "They can understand that the things that they're experiencing might be a normal response," Robinson Chamberlain said. "The more diversity we can have in our guests, the more we can reach more people who may feel seen and heard." For every one of the sitcom’s main foursome, there were practically dozens of agitated relatives, annoyed ex-boyfriends and girlfriends, beleaguered shopkeepers, bad dates, celebrity drop-bys and put-upon coworkers. In fact, when we talk about our favorite Seinfeld episodes or quote our favorite lines, many of them revolve around the nut cases, nasty New Yorkers and “no soup for you!” villains who entered in the main characters’ orbit. So Rolling Stone has assessed and assembled the 25 greatest Seinfeld characters, and ranked them in order of their significance to the Seinfeldverse, their overall hilarity factor and their own personal preferences. www.hap2it.com February 16, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 11 Don’t worry, loyal reader; I will not ask you to take a “brief survey” after reading this column. Nor will I find your cell number, contact you and then ask you to “stay on the line” and rate the experience. I promise not to offer you an Amazon gift card or a sweepstakes entry if you would just give me “all fives” when I ask you a series of inane questions about my writing style. I don’t need your love and praise that badly. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the world’s biggest corporations, which suddenly seem to require gold stars and thumbs up emojis from their customers in order to continue functioning. On a recent Saturday morning, I opened my email to find not one, not two, but THREE messages from Fortune 500 companies asking me for feedback on my recent interactions with their brands. First up? Starbucks, which I had visited the previous morning. After consenting to take the survey because, well, I’m a stand-up comedian and I have a lot of time on my hands, I was first asked if I was over or under 18. Confession: I’ve had to answer that question on a few sites I’ve visited, but none that specialized in pumpkin spiced lattes. By clicking “yes,” would I be taken to the “dark” Starbucks site? One that specializes in X-rated beverages? Instead, I was asked to confirm that, yes, I did visit a Starbucks in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood the previous morning. Suddenly I felt like I had transitioned from coffee pervert to murder suspect. Mr. Schwem, did anyone actually SEE you purchase a caramel macchiato? Did you save your receipt? No? Interesting. We’ll be in touch. In the meantime, please don’t leave the country. “Did the employees make an effort to get to know you?” was next. I gave the highest rating because I couldn’t stand the idea of a barista being reprimanded because he or she wouldn’t take the time to commiserate with a sweaty, just-exited-his-health-club customer like myself. Starbucks, there were 15 people in line behind me. Do you really WANT your counter staff to keep them waiting while they get to know me better? “Greg, your mocha frappuccino is up. And, Greg, have you seen this hilarious TikTok video?” Finally, Starbucks asked how it could improve my experience. What was I supposed to say? I walked in, ordered coffee, a barista poured that coffee into a cup, I paid for it and I exited the premises. Want to improve that experience? Eliminate the “I paid for it” part. That will surely generate a series of “fives” from me and every other customer. Next up was United Airlines, which transported me from Chicago to Houston hours after the Starbucks encounter. Their survey consisted of one question: “How likely are you to recommend United Airlines to a friend?” I am a 60-year-old man with friends of similar ages. I’m quite certain all of them are familiar with United Airlines and don’t need an introduction from me. “Hey, guys, next time you go to O’Hare, check out these big silver planes that are lined up on the tarmac. They all say ‘United.’ You GOTTA try them!” Sandwiched between my Starbucks purchase and my flight was an Uber ride to the airport. As is customary, I was asked to rate my driver, in this case, Nzuji. Uber drivers, relax; I can relate to your plight, because I briefly drove for Uber. As long as my driver doesn’t take a route that involves plunging over a cliff into a polluted body of water, he or she is getting five stars. And if I survive the fall and surface in time to make my appointment, I’ll still tip. Uber passengers, I expect the same courtesy if I’m your driver someday. I can only think of one company, a shall-not-be-named rental car firm, which will never again get my business due to a single incident. To the three companies mentioned, it will take more than a cold beverage, a delayed flight or a wrong turn to make me abandon your services. If I’m upset or have an improvement suggestion, I will reach out to you. Now please stop cluttering my inbox. Readers, if you agree, can I have a “like”? Page 12 HAPPENINGS February 16, 2023 www.hap2it.com Brussels: From politics to good living Brussels is a city of 1.2 million, the capital of Belgium, the headquarters of NATO, and the political center of the European Union. It may be easy to skip as you zip from Amsterdam to Paris by train, but its rich brew of food and culture pleasantly surprises those who stop. Its magnificent grand square, aptly named Grand Place, alone makes a visit worthwhile. The city is understandably proud of its Magritte Museum. With more than 250 paintings, it has the world’s largest collection of works by surrealist René Magritte, who famously painted a picture of a pipe and wrote on the canvas “this is not a pipe." Take time to wander through Brussels’ other excellent museums. The Old Masters Museum, featuring Flemish and Belgian art, has a dazzling collection of masterpieces by Van der Weyden, Bruegel, Bosch, and Rubens. The Fin-de-Siècle Museum next door, covering art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, also makes for an enjoyable stroll. The Atomium, one of Brussels’ offbeat attractions, looms on the edge of town. This gigantic, silvery steel “molecule” has escalators connecting the various “atoms,” fun space-age videos, and a view from the top sphere. If you’re scared of heights or tight spaces, tell your friends you’ll wave to them … from the ground. If you’re hungry, muscle your way into a restaurant to order mussels in Brussels. They’re served everywhere. You get a bigenough-for-two bucket and a pile of fries. Use an empty shell to tweeze out the rest of the mussels. Don’t call fried potatoes “french fries.” Belgian fries (frites) taste so good because they’re deep-fried twice – once to cook, and once to brown. The locals dunk them in mayonnaise – especially delicious if the mayo is flavored with garlic. My favorite budget meal in Brussels is having simple pub grub in an atmospheric old pub with a gaggle of “beer pilgrims,” who’ve flocked here from around the world to appreciate some of Europe’s best brew and selection; there are hundreds of Belgian varieties. Belgium is split between Wallonia in the south, where they speak French, and Flanders in the north, where they speak Flemish, a dialect of Dutch. French-speakers have often dominated the national government, which irks the Flemish, who comprise about 60 percent of the Belgian population. The longstanding rivalry has made it increasingly difficult for the Belgian Parliament to form a stable coalition government. One prime minister said that Belgians are united only by the king, a love of beer, and the national soccer team. While the Belgians debate their unity, Brussels is the administrative center of the European Union. It hosts business people from around the world – only Washington, D,C., has more lobbyists. When Europeans have a gripe, this is where they demonstrate. The European Parliament, a towering complex of glass skyscrapers, has 705 members representing 27 countries and more than 466 million citizens. Take the multimedia guide tour. It’s exciting just to be here – a mouse in the corner of a place that aspires to chart the future of Europe. With each visit I find the gathering crowds as interesting as the quirky statue they’ve traveled to see. Hang out for a while and watch the commotion this little guy makes as tour groups come and go. When I was there last, a Russian man marveled at the statue, shook his head, and said, “He never stop!” There are several silly legends about the origin of the Manneken. Want the truth? The city commissioned the Manneken to show the freedom and joy of living in Brussels – where happy people eat, drink … and drink … and then pee. And 400 years later, things haven’t changed. By Rick Steves travel Passenger jet collides with shuttle bus at L.A. airport, 5 injured A collision between an American Airlines Airbus A321 and a shuttle bus on a taxiway at Los Angeles International Airport last week left five people injured, officials said. Airport officials said in a statement that a jet being towed from a gate to a parking area "made contact with a shuttle bus" resulting in injuries to about five people. "We thank our partners LAFD for quickly responding and treating passenger from the bus. Other LAX operations remind normal," they said. The Airbus A321 was empty of passengers and only had one airport worker on board. The driver of the tug vehicle pulling the plane was injured, along with the bus driver and two passengers board the bus,KTLATV reported. The airport worker who was onboard the Airbus during the collision was also lightly injured, firefighters said. Another incident occurred recently when a United Airlines 777 leaving Hawaii plunged toward the ocean for 21 seconds shortly after takeoff and came within 800 feet of sea level, flight tracking data show. Neither United nor the FAA indicated anyone was injured on United Flight 1722 on December 18. The plunge occurred a little over a minute after takeoff. The plane lost more than half its altitude and came within 775 feet of sea level. Rod Williams II and his family were sitting near the back of the plane when the Boeing 777 made a terrifying plunge shortly after taking off from Kahului Airport in Hawaii. Williams told CNN the plane seemed to be flying normally at first, but then he said the plane climbed at “a concerning rate” for a few seconds. “It felt like you were climbing to the top of a roller coaster. It was at that point,” Williams said. “There were a number of screams on the plane. Everybody knew that something was out of the ordinary, or at least that this was not normal.” The plane then went into a “dramatic, nose-down” dive for about eight to 10 seconds before it climbed steeply again and resumed normal flight. United said it conducted an investigation with the FAA and the pilots union “that ultimately resulted in the pilots receiving additional training,” adding the investigation is ongoing. The European Parliament in Brussels charts the course of Europe.

Page 14 HAPPENINGS February 16, 2023 www.hap2it.com Dog walks 10 miles to former shelter A dog who went missing from her new Texas home was found two days later after walking 10 miles to her former shelter and ringing the doorbell. The Animal Rescue League of El Paso said a recentlyadopted dog named Bailey went missing from her new home in late January. Bailey turned up two days later when she found her way back to the Animal Rescue League, about 10 miles from her new home, in the middle of the night. "At 1:42 in the morning she's ringing the doorbell like, 'I'm home,'" shelter founder Loretta Hyde told USA Today. Shelter staff received an alert from the facility's Ring doorbell and checked the camera to see Bailey waiting to be let inside. Hyde said staff rushed to the shelter and brought Bailey inside. "She slept so hard the whole night," Hyde said. Bailey was soon reunited with her new family. "It was such a happy ending for all of us," Hyde said. Forgotten bread leads Maryland man to $100,000 lottery prize A Maryland man who had to make a second trip to the store because he forgot to buy bread ended up winning a $100,000 lottery prize. The 65-year-old Harford County man told officials he went out to run errands and ended up deciding not to buy any lottery tickets when vending machines at the store were occupied. The man said he arrived home and realized he had to go out again because he had forgotten to buy bread. "So, I stopped back at the store and bought a Fast Play game and a $10 Gold X50 ticket," the player recalled. The player then made a stop for bread and returned home, where he discovered the Gold X50 scratch-off ticket was a $100,000 top prize winner. The man told his wife of his good luck, but she needed some convincing. "I thought it was a joke," the winner's wife told officials. "I thought I was reading it wrong, it just didn't seem right." The winner said the prize money will go toward he and his wife's goal of moving or buying a second home in another state. 1908 Harley sells for a record $935,000 A Harley-Davidson motorcycle dating from 1908 sold for $935,000, making it the most expensive bike ever sold at an auction. Mecum Auction in Las Vegas said the motorcycle, known as the Strap Tank due to the nickelplated steel bands that suspend the fuel and oil tanks from its frame, sold for $935,000 after fees in a late-January auction. Vintagent, a website that tracks auctions of vintage motorcycles, said the sale represented the highest price ever paid for a motorcycle at an auction. "We marketed the bike well, and Harley is by far the most famous American motorcycle brand, so we had a feeling it would do well in auction, but obviously you are surprised anytime you sell the most expensive bike ever," Greg Arnold, motorcycle division manager at Mecum Auctions, told the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel. Arnold said surviving Strap Tank bikes are rare, and the bike sold by Mecum was an especially unique find. "This bike has many of its original parts, which makes it that much more rare," he said. Mecum said the bike was found intact in a Wisconsin barn by David Uihlein in 1941, and he kept it in his possession for the ensuing 66 years. Candy giant fined after two workers got stuck in a vat of chocolate A federal safety regulator fined Mars Wrigley more than $14,500 for an incident last year when two workers fell into a vat of chocolate at the company's factory in Pennsylvania. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration, part of the Labor Department, charged Mars Wrigley with "serious" citations for an incident in June. The two workers were not seriously hurt, but trapped, in a vat of chocolate at the Mars Wrigley plant in Elizabethtown, Pa. The company was also fined more than $60,000 for safety-related issues involving highly hazardous chemicals at a Kansas plant in 2019. COVID-19 might increase diabetes risk People who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 may be 66% more likely to develop Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, a study at Penn State College of Medicine says. The research team discovered the SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID19 attaches itself to enzyme receptors on organs such as the kidneys, small intestine and pancreas and can affect insulin levels. "We can't definitively conclude that COVID-19 causes diabetes, and more research on whether there is a biological cause to explain this association is needed," said Paddy Ssentongo, an internal medicine resident physician at Penn State Health. The Penn State study was based on cross-analyzing data from eight other studies on COVID-19. The full results of the study were published in Nature Scientific Reports. Ba and Ssentongo said more research must be done to examine the relationship between COVID-19 and diabetes in hopes of guiding prevention strategies. coast to coast ID series details rise and fall of Jared Fogle Jared Fogle was once one of TV's most popular spokespersons. His story of overcoming obesity by eating a diet of Subway sandwiches lead him to an endorsement deal in 2000 and made him rich, famous and a trusted public personality. A new three-part Investigation Discovery series Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster explores how the formerly obese teenager transformed into the affable spokesperson until his demons couldn't be contained. Interviews with Florida journalist Rochelle Herman who recorded Fogle's sickening confessions and worked with the FBI on the case, and with Taylor's stepdaughters, Hannah and Christian, who were abused by both men, provide a complete portrait of the impact of their crimes. After the 34-year-old singer/entrepreneur performed the halftime show for Super Bowl LVII, she confirmed her second pregnancy with rapper A$AP Rocky. The two share a ninemonth-old son, whose name has yet to be publicly revealed. The Hollywood Reporter first confirmed the pregnancy via Rihanna's representative, after social media exploded with speculation that the "Umbrella" singer might be expecting. In her first live performance in seven years, the singer performed with dancers on elevated platforms hanging over the field. In the 13 minutes allotted to halftime performances, the Grammy winner performed 12 of her biggest hits including "Umbrella," "Run This Town" "We Found Love" "Work" and "Rude Boy." In the weeks leading up to the halftime performance, Rihanna never mentioned a pregnancy but did say that the preparation for the show was taxing, given that she'd just had a baby and hadn't performed live in so long. "The physical challenge has definitely been immense for many reasons," she told Nadeska Alexis in apre-show interviewfor Apple TV. "I haven't done this in a minute, first things first. You're just running around for 13 minutes trying to put a twohour set in 13 minutes ... It's a jampacked show and it takes a toll on your body. It really does." Rihanna and Rakim "A$AP Rocky" Myers have been dating for the last few years after a long friendship. The Harlem-born rapper once opened for Rihanna on tour. This is their second child together. Rihanna's next major public appearance will likely be at the Oscars on March 12. Lead singer Hayley Williamssays the title track was the last song written for the album, summing up the challenges she and her bandmates have gone through since the last release. "It summarizes the plethora of ridiculous emotions, the rollercoaster of being alive in 2022, having survived even just the last three or four years," Williamssaid."You'd think after a global pandemic of [expletive] biblical proportions and the impending doom of a dying planet, that humans would have found it deep within themselves to be kinder or more empathetic or something." This is Why is the band's first release since 2017'sAfter Laughter. One of the reasons for that is the trio's solo projects. Williams did an album called Petals for Armor in 2020, with Paramore's guitarist Taylor York, who is also her boyfriend. Drummer Zack Farro, released several albums under the name Halfnoise. But there were other reasons for the hiatus, the band says. "The entire world went through a traumatic season that we're still in and recovering from and trying to figure out," Yorktold Entertainment Weekly."The world shutting down - gosh, we've learned a lot and we all went through a lot. That's why this record, there's a lot more aggression than we've had in a while. "There's different types of an emotional release in certain songs that I don't think we've had in a little bit," York added. "A lot of that was a product of the times, and not only trying to reflect on what had happened but also taking that long of a break, we were able to rediscover different sides of ourselves musically that was fun to dive into." Page 24 HAPPENINGS February 16, 2023 www.hap2it.com Social Security and You: How Retirement Benefits Are Figured After doing this column for so many years (more than a quarter century now), I've learned there are two kinds of potential Social Security beneficiaries. The vast majority are those who just want a general idea of how their benefits will be figured. But there are more than a few people out there who want to know exactly how the government comes up with their retirement benefit calculation. I'll start today's column addressing the first group. In a nutshell, a Social Security retirement benefit is a percentage of your average monthly income using your highest 35 years of inflationadjusted earnings. When you file for retirement benefits, the Social Security Administration will look at your earnings history and pull out your highest 35 years. They don't have to be consecutive. If you don't have 35 years of earnings, the SSA must plug in an annual salary of "zero" for every year you did not work, until the 35-year base is reached. However, before they add up those "high 35," they index each year of past earnings for inflation, which is where the formula starts to get messy. That's because there is a different adjustment factor for each year of earnings, and each year's adjustment factor is different based on your year of birth. Here is a quick example. If you were born in 1960 and earned $20,000 in 1990, they would multiply those earnings by an inflation adjustment factor of 2.6, meaning they would actually use $52,000 as your 1990 earnings. But if you were born in 1955 and earned that same $20,000 in 1990, they would use an inflation factor of 2.2, resulting in $44,000, as the 1990 earnings used in your Social Security computation. You can find a complete breakdown of those inflation adjustment factors for each year of birth at the Social Security Administration's website: www.socialsecurity.gov. If you have a hard time negotiating that website, just Google "Social Security indexing factors" and it will lead you to the right place. The next step in the retirement computation formula is to add up your highest 35 years of inflation-adjusted earnings. Then you divide by 420 — that's the number of months in 35 years — to get your average inflation-adjusted monthly income. The final step brings us to the "social" part of Social Security. The percentage of your average monthly income that comes back to you in the form of a Social Security benefit depends on your income. In a nutshell, the lower your average wage, the higher percentage rate of return you get. Once again, the actual formula is messy and varies depending on your year of birth. As an example, here is the formula for someone born in 1960. You take the first $1,024 of average monthly income and multiply it by 90%. You take the next $5,148 of your average monthly income and multiply that by 32%. And you take any remainder and multiply it by 15%. You can find a complete breakdown of those computation "bend points" at www.socialsecurity.gov, or just do a Google search using the phrase "Social Security bend points" to find several sites that should help you. Believe it or not, that was the "simple" explanation for those who just want some kind of idea of how their Social Security retirement benefit will be figured. To summarize, it is a percentage of your average monthly income using your highest 35 years of inflation-adjusted earnings. If this was a college course, think of it as Social Security Benefit Computation 101. But now I'm going to get into a little more of an advanced version of retirement benefit calculations for those who want to know the nitty-gritty of the process. I'll start by introducing this term: the "primary insurance amount," or PIA. The PIA is your basic retirement benefit upon which all future calculations will be based. The "raw PIA" is actually calculated at age 62. In other words, when the SSA pulls out your highest 35 years of earnings, they only use earnings up to age 62. Then that raw PIA gets "cooked," or increased, to take into account any earnings you had after age 62 and to include any cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that were authorized for Social Security benefits after the year you reached age 62. But it gets a little tricky when SSA does the recomputation for any earnings you have after age 62. If you worked full time until age 66, for example, you would normally assume that those earnings between age 62 and 66 would increase your PIA. After all, you figure, they are some of your highest earning years so they will become part of that "high 35." But not necessarily, and here is why. For reasons I can't take the time to explain in this short column, earnings after age 60 are not indexed for inflation. They get calculated at current dollar value only. So, if your "raw PIA" was based on a full 35-year history of high inflation-adjusted earnings, your current earnings may not be high enough to become part of your "high 35," so they won't increase your benefit. They possibly might bump up the PIA, but not by much. In fact, I hear from readers all the time who tell me that they are confused because the benefit estimate they are getting from the SSA now (at age 66, let's say) is not much more than the estimate they got back at age 62. Their current benefit estimate includes the COLA increases, but either little or no bump for their post-62 earnings. The reason why is that lack of inflation indexing after age 60. As you can see, the Social Security retirement benefit formula is pretty messy. But for most of you, I would say: "Don't worry about it." Just let the SSA do it for you. Go to www.socialsecurity.gov, and click on the "Plan for Retirement" icon on the homepage. It will walk you through the process of finding out what your Social Security benefit will be. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has two books with all the answers. One is called "Social Security -- Simple and Smart: 10 Easy-to-Understand Fact Sheets That Will Answer All Your Questions About Social Security." The other is "Social Security: 100 Myths and 100 Facts." You can find the books at Amazon.com or other book outlets. Memory screening can: • Provide relief for individuals concerned about normal memory loss • Lead to diagnosis of treatable conditions • Offer the ability to make lifestyle changes early when they have the greatest potential for positive effect and the opportunity to participate in making future decisions Warning signs of dementia include forgetting people’s names and events, asking repetitive questions, loss of verbal or written skills, confusion over daily routines, and personality changes. Screening results are not a diagnosis, and individuals who have concerns are encouraged to pursue a full medical exam. Appointments are recommended. During the upcoming week, you may work harder than usual to reach your goals. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You may be filled with discontent in the week ahead; use it to discover what you need to release or can improve in your life. Fulfill any family obligations with an open heart and do not begin anything new. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Keep your spirits up and concentrate on the best and highest. In the week ahead you might become cynical if you hear too many negative comments or untruthful gossip. Avoid being a victim of someone else's agenda. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Be cautious and avoid making new or unusual investments in the week to come. You may not want to settle for less than you deserve, so you should wait for a worthy opportunity. Maintain a non-judgmental attitude. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Universal law states that like attracts like and what goes around comes around. If you are putting out bad vibes, you will likely attract the same from others. In the week ahead, do your best to be fair and to honor your commitments. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): As the week begins, do your best toward every facet of your responsibilities and keep an eye peeled for problems that could affect your health. A supervisor may scrutinize your work. Realign your thoughts from the abstract to the tangible. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): No one ever created a masterpiece on their first try. Take practical steps to develop your creative talents. Avoid overspending to satisfy an obsession in the early part of the week. You may see things differently late this week. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): First things first. Handle your responsibilities and take any family problems seriously. Apply self-discipline if you aspire to becoming proficient in something. By the end of the week, you may earn some unexpected recognition. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Be honest about your mistakes since the truth always comes out; use the opportunity to learn the lesson. Put plans on hold and wait for better timing. Focus on handling your responsibilities in the week ahead. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Focus on saving money, especially if you are tempted to act on impulses. You or a family member may want what you can't have in the first half of the week. Work hard to earn money and save for the future. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): As this week unfolds, you may realize that some problems you encounter are outside your control. Your response to any situation, however, is within your control. Steer clear of power struggles and confrontations. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You may possess a gift, but in the week ahead, may notice that other people have refined and polished theirs. Let others be examples and practice more until you've stepped up your game. Take the rough edges off to shine.
