Page 6 Downtown Kenosha 2023, Vol. 16 Issue #3 #downtownkenoshamagazine ONLINE AT HAP2IT.COM Variety and customization make a great drink at Smarty’s! Q. What does Smarty’s Sweets & Treats offer? A. Boba teas, frappes, fruit teas, refreshers, smoothies and Italian sodas. We also offer cheesecakes in a jar, cupcakes, and a large variety of freeze-dried candy. Q. What is a boba tea? A. Boba tea, aka bubble tea, starts with a base of tea or juice. Milk powders and flavoring syrups are added to the base, and the whole drink is shaken. For the finishing touch, boba pearls and/or other toppings are added. Part of the fun of bubble tea is the ability to customize the drink with different teas, flavors, and toppings. You can really customize and make it your very own! Q. What do you love about owning a business in Downtown Kenosha? A. I love the old school nostalgia. The people walking downtown just enjoying the small businesses. The people Downtown care about the neighborhood and want to make this a destination area. I feel proud to be Downtown! I have been lucky to team up with some other great Kenosha businesses like Manny Ramirez of Mr. Wings and Sweet Corner Ice Cream. They were opportunities I couldn’t refuse and I look forward to working with them again, as well as others. Q. When did you realize you had a passion for baking? A. To be honest I hated baking growing up! My mom was the baker and she loved to bake. About 15 years ago I started to play around with cakes and sweets as an outlet or maybe therapy for the funk I found myself in. I could sit for hours and create things. People would call me all the time to make cakes for them and the rest is history. Q. What inspires your creations? A. My mom! She was the baker, and the family loved her cookies and cakes. She now has dementia and hasn't baked in 20 or so years. She knew she was getting sick so she gave me her box of recipes. It is something I will cherish forever. Page 12 Downtown Kenosha 2023, Vol. 16 Issue #3 #downtownkenoshamagazine ONLINE AT HAP2IT.COM Beautify your life with a visit to A Summer’s Garden! Q. You are more than a flower shop, what else could we find inside your store? A. Beauty lies inside. From day one, we have sold beautiful flowers, lovely plants and fun gifts. We have so much more than flowers and plants; we love fun and sassy items. We have an extensive gifts shop: cards, hand towels, incense, jewelry, vintage items, antique furniture, painted furniture, sage bundles and so many more home decor items. Customer service is extremely important to us. Our customers become our friends. Each order is handled by the owners of the business. We pay attention to details. Q, How do you decide on the selection of flowers and arrangements you offer? A. We like to stock our shop with beautiful, seasonal favorites, and bring in new and unusual varieties of flowers. Pastels are a favorite in spring while bright pops of color will bring in the summer season. Fall will blow in with reds, oranges, and golds until winter holiday season rings in brightly with the red, white, green and burgundy colors. The designs we create come from our imagination and interpretation of current floral trends. We are constantly looking for new ideas to bring to our customers, and love to collaborate with our customers to bring their ideas to life. Q. How is it working with your significant other? A. We met while working at a flower shop 30 years ago. So we've basically been working together since day one. 16 years ago we bought A Summer's Garden Florist and we are still working together. We talk all day, every day. You'd think we would have run out of things to talk about after being married for 27 years, but we haven't. We are each working with our best friend. Q. What do you love about having your business in Downtown Kenosha? A. Downtown Kenosha is a community of business owners that look out for each other like family. We have been downtown for 16 years and have witnessed so much positive growth. Page 24 Downtown Kenosha 2023, Vol. 16 Issue #3 #downtownkenoshamagazine ONLINE AT HAP2IT.COM Hold my beer and watch this! Q. Hold My Beer is Kenosha’s only axe-throwing craft tap house. How do these self tappers work? A. We have 50 taps with a variety of different beverages. To operate, you are given a card when you check in that activates the tap, allowing you to pour as much, or as little, as you want while being charged by the ounce. In addition to the numerous Wisconsin beers, we also feature an array of ciders, seltzers, wine, mixed drinks, and nonalcoholic options. Q. Do you also serve food? A. Yes, we have a limited, yet expanding menu that features pizzas, babka, charcuterie boards, and a gigantic Milwaukee pretzel. Q. Axe throwing and alcohol doesn’t sound like the best idea to some. How do you ensure the safety of your customers? A. Safety instructions are posted in each lane, guests are provided a safety brief when they start and are told how we expect them to behave. We also have coaches monitoring the lanes at all times to ensure everyone is following the rules and behaving safely. Q. Can you share any insights into the psychology behind the popularity of axe throwing as a recreational activity? A. It's therapeutic! Throwing sharp objects at a wall while drinking your choice beverage paired with a delicious pretzel is about as cathartic as it gets! Q. Could you share some memorable experiences or stories from customers who have visited your axe throwing bar? A. The most common feedback we've received so far is that Kenosha needed this - it is something fun to do Downtown - and we can honestly say that hundreds of memories have been made through our establishment already, and we simply love being a part of them. Page 28 Downtown Kenosha 2023, Vol. 16 Issue #3 #downtownkenoshamagazine ONLINE AT HAP2IT.COM Keep ‘er movin’ stress free with About Time Moving Q. What types of specific services does About Time offer? A. Our target market for local moving is three-to-five-bedroom homes that are 2500 to 5500 square feet. On occasion, if the local business slows down, we will target some long-distance jobs, but as of now we prefer to travel to Illinois and Indiana at the farthest. We also offer a professional packing service. It’s up to the customer what level of service they require. Q. How do you ensure the safety and security of the items being moved? A. We pad and wrap all furniture before it is carried out of the home, and unwrap at the new home. We have four moving trucks that have three points of access, air ride suspension, 10-11 moving blankets (we call them pads) along with lots of other equipment to set up our staff for success. We lay down floor runners, door jams that protect the corners of walls, and railings. Our staff also uses door pads before we start the move, and before we start the unloading process at your home. We literally have you covered! Q. What sets your moving company apart from others in the industry? A. I believe our extremely positive reviews, our can-do attitudes, and our proven system we have in place sets us apart from our competitors. Building strong Google reviews was one of the major foundations since the day we opened. We put a strong emphasis on putting the customers needs first, being efficient, and having fun on moving day. Let’s face it: moving sucks. Typically, we make fun of each other and laugh to get through the day. It’s a hard job, but we make the best of it. Page 30 Downtown Kenosha 2023, Vol. 16 Issue #3 #downtownkenoshamagazine ONLINE AT HAP2IT.COM Shelby is excited to embrace the creativity of the community! Q. How did you get involved at Lemon Street Gallery & ArtSpace? A. I was at the first-ever Kenosha Art Market after graduating from UW-Parkside. (Previous director) Beth Dary saw my artwork and asked if I would be interested in teaching a class at Lemon Street. I taught at Lemon Street for about a year until COVID. The break from teaching revealed how passionate I am about the art community, so I asked if I could do more. I started as an administrative assistant, soon became a development coordinator, and now executive director! I have become filled with passion and joy due to the outpouring of support since I took over this position. I truly feel welcomed and wanted in this position, which is vital for someone my age in a leadership position. Can't wait for what's to come! Q. What are some of the new improvements you have already made for Lemon Street? A. We have acquired two new staff members, Missy Isely-Poltrock and Dean Habegger, they have been doing a fantastic job! We have also been strengthening our Board as well as our community partnerships. Q. With Lemon Street being a non-profit organization, how can people help to keep it funded? A. People can help out in so many different ways! You can attend our events, purchase art from our artists, take a class, sponsor programs/events, volunteer, or make donations. Our community will thrive when we embrace creativity and support the arts - it enriches our lives, sparks imagination, and unites communities. No matter how big or small, your contribution helps culture thrive! Q. What are Second Saturdays at Lemon Street? A. Second Saturday is a monthly event held every second Saturday from 6-9 pm. We hold a reception for artists who are showcasing work in our Brick Gallery. This is a great time to immerse yourself in the vibrant art scene of Kenosha, mingle with other art enthusiasts or artists, sip on some refreshments, and enjoy an evening of art and conversation. Each week, they get better and better with their personal sets, and I love giving feedback and watching them grow as performers. Q. Favorite meal at Public? A. Right now would have to be our hand breaded fried chicken dinner. It’s so crispy and the chicken is unbelievably juicy and tender. Lacking absolutely nothing in flavor. Q. What is your favorite beer at Public? A. To me, a lot of factors go into to choosing a beer, but if I had to pick one, right now it would be Reaches for Peaches - it’s a peach blond ale, and is so crispy and refreshing and full of flavor, you can’t have just one. Q. Strangest tip you’ve ever gotten? A. One of our open mic regulars (Snack Daddy) is a great baker, and every Wednesday he brings in a bunch of new goodies he’s trying to perfect, whether it’s actually a tip or not. I take it as that. Q. Best advice you’ve received behind the bar? A. “You never know what the guy on the other side of the bar is thinking.” I also tell this to patrons all the time, I think this is important to remember when you’re bartending, being positive and friendly with everyone is an easy thing to do. Q. What do you do for fun when you’re not working? A. I love fishing, and I also play beer league hockey with my life long buddies. However, what I love most is spending time with my wife and daughter, whether it’s riding our bikes, or just relaxing watching movies on the couch - anything I do with my family is always my favorite thing to do. Q. What do you love about Downtown Kenosha? A. I love that Downtown Kenosha is finally becoming a destination for travelers, every night there’s so much going on it’s hard to choose where you want to hang out. As for the local community, there’s so much support from everyone. w/Drew of Public Craft Brewing Company 628 58th St publiccraftbrewing.com

According to the UW-Madison library, this image was taken from an undocumented magazine around 1870. The unknown artist who created this was located somewhere north of what was then Middle Street (today’s 50th Street) looking in a southerly direction down what today is Sheridan Road. On the left, the square shaped building is a flour mill once owned by Peter Jacobs. On the right (west) is the sloping bank of Pike Creek, when it flowed freely through the little town up to today’s Washington Park, long before it was directed underground in 1960. The bridge is very likely at Grand Avenue (52nd Street, just east of Sheridan today). The flag pole with flag is the Liberty Pole on Market Square, 56th Street and Sixth Ave., erected during the Civil War period. FLASHBACK THEN: 1870 NOW: 2023
