Page 4 HAPPENINGS August 3, 2023 www.hap2it.com The Office (UK version), The Hobbit, Sherlock and Black Panther actor Martin Freeman says that, after four seasons, he feels he has said everything he wanted to with his FX comedy, Breeders. "I, personally, love everything being as finite as possible in life and in art," Freeman, the show's star and co-creator, said in a recent Zoom interview before the Screen Actors Guild went on strike earlier this month. "My worst fear, genuinely, of anything that I've ever done is outstaying my welcome or a show or an idea outstaying its welcome," he said. "We're very happy to bow out at this time. It's been 40 episodes, which is a load more episodes of anything I've ever done in my life." The fourth and final season of Breeders airs on FX, with new episodses streaming on Hulu the following day. Picking up five years after the events of Season 3, it follows seismic changes in the Worsley family -- Paul and Ally (Daisy Haggard), their 18-year-old son Luke (Oscar Kennedy) and 16- year-old daughter Ava (Zoë Athena). Freeman and Haggard have enjoyed exploring the up-anddown dynamics of a family over the course of nearly two decades. "It's nice to sort of go on that trip with people who you actually like to play -- characters who are likable with a family that's likable, as well. It has felt a little bit like a parallel family for me for the last seven or eight years here," added the real-life father of two children. Haggard loved the time jumps between seasons it shows snapshots of this family at different places in their lives. "You see a bigger expanse of their life than you would in a normal show," said the actress best known for her roles in Episodes and Uncle. "You see them in so many different situations and so many different stages. So, you feel like you know them quite well by the end." Now that Luke is about to become a father himself, it's the right time to end the show, she agreed with Freeman. "This is the point when their son is having a child," Haggard said. "We couldn't play any older because we're so young and gorgeous," she laughed. "It was always intended to end when the kids were at this stage. So, it just feels right and natural and this feels like it ends the story really well." Freeman calls the idea of Paul and Ally becoming grandparents because Luke will be a father "a bombshell" announcement. "He's 18. He's basically a child in Paul and Ally's eyes, and not anywhere near ready to do this. We think it's absolutely crazy to do this," the actor added. "But, also, what it does to Paul and Alley, as well, what it does for them as parents becoming grandparents." Paul and Ally were figuring out what their futures might look like for them now that their kids were more independent when their lives take another left turn. "They were just sort of settling back in together and finding a new shape and a new way of being," Haggard said. "Then, suddenly, this happens and they completely lose their footing. So, that's really fun to play." Haggard said fans tell her they feel seen and understood by when they watch the show because it accurately reflects "the less beautiful side of of parenting and family life." "People connect with that," she added. Freeman said people feel less alone and guilty when they see how frazzled family members on the show sometimes express complicated feelings for each other. "The more you love them, the more you are likely to lose your mind with fury at them at certain points, whether it's your spouse, or your brother, or your mom, or your child," he said. "I didn't think this needed to be pointed out. But, clearly, it did because a lot of people have come up to me and said: 'Oh, my God, that's so great! I don't need to feel so bad.'" Freeman said he thinks people needed that reassurance 30 years ago. "People were more [accepting] of the idea that you can lose your temper with the people you love," he added. "It's called being alive." By Karen Butler Daisy Haggard and Martin Freeman can now be seen in the fourth and final season of "Breeders," airing on the FX  network and streaming on HULU Martin Freeman says he didn't want 'Breeders' to overstay its welcome Born Martin John Christopher Freeman September 8, 1971 (age 51) Aldershot, Hampshire, England Freeman became recognized after his appearance in the UK version of “The Office,” where he played Tim. In the US version, John Krasinski portrayed Jim, a version of Freeman’s character. Freeman played Bilbo Baggins, in Peter Jackson’s three part Hobbit film series (2012-2014). He became a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe club in 2016 with his role as CIA agent Ross in “Captain America: Civil War.” Freeman is close friends with actor/filmmaker Simon Pegg. Page 6 HAPPENINGS August 3, 2023 www.hap2it.com At Vienna’s Hofburg Palace complex, ground zero of the Habsburg Empire, I’m particularly entertained by its butterfly house, a tropical wonderland on the Danube. In this community of royal butterflies, the trays serving up rotting slices of banana are the tavern. Fluttery slackers lick the fermented banana juice as it beads, and then just hang out there in a stupor…or fly in giddy loop-deloops. While the butterflies are a quick visit, the rest of the Habsburg sights can fill an entire Vienna vacation. The lavish Imperial Apartments of the palace seem designed to give their royal residents – the Habsburgs – grandeur fit for a god. After all, in the age of divine monarchs, kings and emperors such as the Habsburgs claimed that God himself had ordained them to rule with unquestioned authority. The Habsburgs were one of a handful of royal families who ruled nearly all of Europe until World War I. Six centuries of Habsburgs ruled from Vienna, including Maria Theresa in the late 1700s. The original practitioner of “make love not war,” she was famous for having 16 children and cleverly marrying many of them into the various other royal families around Europe in order to expand her empire. Exploring the Hofburg is a treat. It’s furnished as it was in the 19th century during the reign of Maria Theresa’s great-great-grandson, Emperor Franz Josef. He ruled for 68 years—nearly to the end of the empire. Walls between the palace rooms are wide enough to hide servants’ corridors. Big, ornate stoves, which servants fed from behind, heated the rooms. The decor is splendid Baroque – the preferred style of divine monarchs, as it served as a kind of propaganda to sell the Old Regime notion that some were born to rule and others were born to be ruled. The dining room is set just as it would have been. The settings are modest… just silver. Gold was saved for formal state dinners. Next to each name card was a menu listing the chef responsible for each dish. (Talk about pressure.) While the Hofburg had tableware for 4,000, it fed 3,000 on a typical day. Franz Josef nurtured an image of being spartan and a very hard worker. His no-frills iron bed and portable washstand are on display. (Still, it took a personal staff of 14 to make him feel properly cared for: three valets, two doormen, six man servants, and three chambermaids.) While he had a typical emperor’s share of mistresses, his dresser was always well stocked with portraits of his wife, the Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”). Elisabeth, Franz Josef’s mysterious, narcissistic, and beautiful wife, lived luxuriously in this palace—and a museum here is dedicated to her life story. It tells of her fairy-tale existence – her escapes, dieting mania, chocolate bills, and love of poetry. Her main goal in life seems to have been preserving her public image as a beauty. Peeking into her bathroom, you’ll see the finest copper tub of its day resting on the first linoleum floor in Vienna, installed in 1880. Sisi has been compared to Princess Diana because of her beauty, bittersweet life, and tragic death – assassinated by an Italian anarchist in 1898. When you visit Vienna, it’s easy to get caught up in the alluring legend of Empress Elizabeth. The Habsburgs ruled as Holy Roman Emperors, and they had the fancy jewels to prove it – the best on the Continent. In the Hofburg’s treasury, visitors reflect on the glitter of 21 rooms filled with precious paraphernalia, designed to help keep one royal family ruling a good part of Europe. A 500-year-old unicorn horn (or perhaps the tusk of a narwhal) was considered to have magical healing powers bestowed from on high. It was understood to confer the Holy Roman Emperor, a “divine” monarch, the grace of God – something rulers still seek today. While the Habsburgs have been out of power since the end of World War I, they maintain a hold on the Austrian spirit – as you feel when you visit their tombs in the Kaisergruft (Imperial Crypt). Stepping inside, you’re surrounded by gray metal tombs festooned with Habsburg regalia. How the royals wanted to be remembered is reflected in the tombs they often helped design. Franz Josef’s is an appropriately austere military tomb. Sisi always seems to get the most flowers. While it’s fun to chase down all these royal body parts, remember that the real legacy of the Habsburgs is the magnificence of their city. Stepping outside, I squint up and appreciate the brilliant, ornate skyline of Vienna. By Rick Steves Whimsy and luxury at Vienna’s Hofburg Palace travel Vienna’s Hofburg Palace is steeped in Habsburg history, but the complex also houses museums on ancient Ephesus, the imperial armory, musical instruments, and more. Travelers at Philadelphia International Airport were treated to a rare spectacle when a raccoon showed up on the belt at baggage claim. A passenger recorded video last week when the raccoon emerged from the chute alongside suitcases from a recently-arrived flight. Airport officials said the hub is surrounded by fields and raccoons have been known to get into the airport from time to time. "The raccoon in the video most likely got lost in one of the baggage tunnels and was attempting to get out. The airport works with the USDA to set humane traps for raccoons," the airport said in a statement provided to WPVI-TV. Airport spokesperson Heather Redfern said the raccoon was not trapped by staff and appears to have found its own way out of the building. A similar incident occurred at the airport in 2022, when a raccoon was filmed emerging from a wall vent to steal a packet of Raccoon shows up on baggage belt at Philadelphia airport

www.hap2it.com August 3, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 11 Electronic Skin The headline seems like an odd combo, but researchers have taken the first steps toward creating soft, flexible, sensitive skin capable of producing electronic signals that can trigger an underlying nerve response. The material, known as e-skin, was tested on a rat model. When the e-skin was touched, nerve cells began firing in the rat's brain, triggering leg twitches. That's a long way from human use, but the hope someday is to produce e-skin that might mimic the sense of touch (and maybe more) in patients with paralysis or lost limbs. Body of Knowledge Among our predecessors, the big toe was used for grasping, such as when climbing trees or clinging to mom. These days, the digit is sometimes used a transplant replacement for people who have lost a thumb. Of course, in such cases, the recipient cannot be lack toes intolerant. Get Me That, Stat! Hypochondriac's Guide In 1665, the Great (bubonic) Plague killed roughly one-quarter of all Londoners, perhaps 100,000 or more. But life back then was pretty sketchy and precarious even without pestilential rats running around, unbound. Back then, if you lived in London — or a lot of other places — you could also die from winde (a kind of severe gastrointestinal condition); purples (possibly scurvy or a circulation disorder); livergrown (an enlarged liver); chrisomes (all forms of infant mortality); rising of the lights (pulmonary disease); timpani (swelling of the digestive tract); tissick (wasting disease of the lungs); meagrome (brain aneurysms or tumors); imposthume (swollen cysts or abscesses); head mould shot (illfitting skull plates in a newborn); quinsy (fatal tonsillitis); surfeit (an excess of something); French pox (syphilis, not limited to the French); blood flux (dysentery); and plannet (inexplicable mental behaviors). Observation "You know you're getting old when you stoop to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you're down there." — Comedian George Burns (1896-1996) Medical History This week in 1978 in England, Louise Joy Brown was born using in vitro fertilization, becoming the world's first "test tube baby." Exactly five years later, the first nonhuman primate was conceived in a Petri dish — a baboon named E.T. for Embryo Transfer. Ig Nobel Apprised The Ig Nobel Prizes celebrate achievements that make people laugh, then think. A look at real science that's hard to take seriously, and even harder to ignore. In 1996, the Ig Nobel Prize in biology went to Anders Baerheim and Hogne Sandvik of the University of Bergen in Norway for their report "Effect of ale, garlic, and soured cream on the appetite of leeches." Their findings: Beer made some leeches sway their forebodies, lose their grip and fall on their backs. Leeches who consumed garlic died soon after. Possibly they were vampire leeches. Sour cream produced no reaction, proving it's an acquired taste. Curtain Calls Thomas Otway was a 17thcentury English playwright who fell upon hard times and eventually found himself on the streets, begging for food (and probably pretty hangry). On April 14, 1685, a passerby recognized Otway and gave him a guinea (a coin minted in Great Britain between 1663 and 1814). Otway rushed to a baker's shop, purchased a roll and promptly choked to death while wolfing it down. Page 12 HAPPENINGS August 3, 2023 www.hap2it.com The Good Wife and Departure alum Archie Panjabi says that when she received the scripts for the first few episodes of Hijack, she demanded to know the fate of the flight's passengers before she agreed to star in the high-altitude, nerve-wracking thriller. "I couldn't put it down," Panjabi said in a recent virtual press conference that took place before Hollywood's Screen Actors Guild strike earlier this month. "By the end of the third one, I wanted to know if my character had successfully saved the passengers, so I phoned up my agent and said, 'I need to read [episodes] four to seven,'" Panjabi laughed. "She said, 'Do you not want to do it?' I said: 'No, I'd love to do it. I just need to know what happens to the passengers.'" The actress knew then that the seven-episode show would captivate viewers. "I thought: 'This is a brilliant script! It's really thrilling. It's going to have audiences at the edge of their seat,'" she said. Airing Wednesdays on Apple TV+, the show unfolds in real time -- one hour per episode -- and follows those onboard a hijacked flight from Dubai to London. Luther and Suicide Squad icon Idris Elba plays Sam Nelson, a businessman who uses his unique set of analytical skills to try to save the lives of his fellow passengers and the plane's crew, in part, by secretly transmitting messages to his ex-wife Marsha (Christine Adams). Marsha then passes on the information to her new police detective beau Daniel (Max Beesley) whose former girlfriend Zahra (Panjabi) just happens to be a counterterrorism agent. Together, Daniel and Zahra put their personal feelings aside and do their best to get the hijackers -- whose motives remain a mystery until late in the series -- to safely land the plane. Directed by Jim Field Smith and written by George Kay -- who previously collaborated on Litvinenko -- the series co-stars Eve Myles, Neil Maskell, Jasper Britton, Harry Michell, Aimee Kelly, Mohamed Elsandel and Ben Miles. "We very delicately and subtly worked through Marsha's messages from Idris' character, Sam, and then my past relationship with Archie, who is in counterterrorism," said Beesley, who is known for his roles in The Outsider and Hotel Babylon. "As the dominoes fall, then we realize we're into a very serious situation," he added. "It grabs you quite quickly and it's high-octane stuff. It's really a great drama." When Marsha initially voices her concerns about Sam, Daniel's first call is to Zahra. "Zahra's character first learns about the hijacking and gets together all the authorities and starts a big investigation," Panjabi said. Although the authorities on the ground were in a room bigger than the mock aircraft where Sam and the other passengers were, it still felt claustrophobic at times. "Those were stressful scenes," Panjabi said. "We all had to stay in one position. We couldn't move because of the number of people in the room. We were watching the monitor with a dart, which was the aircraft." Elba had one obvious advantage over cast members in the back of the plane and Zahra and Daniel's team on the ground: A lot of Elba's scenes featured him talking to the hijackers from the comfort of the plane's first-class section, according to Panjabi. "He was in first! We were kind of packed like sardines," she said. Despite the tension, long hours and close quarters, the cast and crew enjoyed a sense of camaraderie against the film's high stakes. "It was intense, right, Jim? We had a lot of fun on the show," Panjabi said. "The great thing about filming this is that we did it chronologically and, so, the tension just builds," she added. "The tension in that room just escalates to a point where it becomes unbearable." Panjabi said she was intrigued by the idea of Zahra working with Daniel when the wounds from their failed romance were still fresh. "I remember when we first met, we were like: 'Well, what's our chemistry? What's our backstory? What's our history?' And I think we both had two different stories," she said. "We both decided each of us had chucked each other." Kay chimed in, "I think Zahar is strong and managed to kind of see that maybe Daniel is not the right partner and they broke up." Regardless of who was to blame, Zahra and Daniel put their differences aside for the greater good. "There's a really nice moment when I'm driving the car and you ask me all these questions," Panjabi told Beesley. "I have a go at you, and, at the end, Zahra just says, 'It's OK, I get it.' I think from then onward we just work together. Beesley agreed. "We're very good at our jobs, which is important, and, ultimately, we do kind of really help the situation," he said. By Karen Butler Archie Panjabi wanted to learn fate of 'Hijack' passengers before taking role Archie Panjabi can be seen in the Apple TV+ thriller series "Hijack." Born Archana Panjabi May 31, 1972 (age 51) Edgware, London, England From 2009-15, she portrayed Kalinda Sharma in the CBS legal drama “The Good Wife.” Through the seven seasons, Panjabi was nominated for three Emmy’s, winning one in 2010, becoming the first Asian actor to win a Primetime Emmy for acting. Up next for Panjabi is the role of Human in the upcoming Hulu true crime drama miniseries “Under the Bridge,” based on the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey. She is also classically trained in ballet. She has been quite philanthropically active, working with Rotary International, Amnesty International, and the Stop Violence Against Women campaigns. Man wins $1M lottery prize 3 days after announcing his retirement A Massachusetts man has a comfortable future ahead of him thanks to winning a $1 million lottery prize just three days after announcing his retirement. Paul Bashaw told officials he informed his employer of more than 20 years that he would be retiring the following week, and three days later he bought a $5,000,000 scratch-off lottery ticket. Bashaw, a truck driver preparing to celebrate his 66th birthday later this year, scratched off a $1 million prize. "I told my wife there were three things in life I never thought I'd see happen: the Patriots winning the Super Bowl, getting a hole in one - - that happened five years ago -- and hitting the lottery, and now I've hit all three," Bashaw said. Bashaw said he plans to use some of his winnings to travel. Wearable ultrasound scanner could detect breast cancer earlier Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a wearable ultrasound tracker that could detect breast cancer at its early stages, giving it the potential to save lives. Scientists said the device is a flexible patch that can be attached to a bra, allowing the wearer to move an ultrasound tracker along the patch and image the breast tissue from different angles. They said the device would allow physicians to obtain ultrasound images with resolution comparable to ultrasound probes used in medical imaging centers. The researchers designed a 3D-printed patch with honeycomb-like openings containing magnets, allowing the patch to be attached to bras. The openings allow the ultrasound scanner to contact the skin and be moved into different positions. Breast tumors that develop between regularly scheduled mammograms are known as interval cancers. They account for 20% to 30% of all breast cancer cases, and tend to be more aggressive than tumors found during routine scans, MIT said. Researchers said the device would also allow for more frequent screening of women at high risk for breast cancer. "Access to quality and affordable healthcare is essential for early detection and diagnosis," Catherine Ricciardi, nurse director at MIT's Center for Clinical and Translational Research and an author of the study, said in the release. "This technology holds the promise of breaking down the many barriers for early breast cancer detection by providing a more reliable, comfortable and less intimidating diagnostic." MIT researchers said they also plan to explore adapting the ultrasound technology to scan other parts of the body. FDA approves second over-the-counter naloxone spray The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a second over-the-counter naloxone nasal spray as "a powerful tool" to treat opioid overdoses. The agency gave the OK to RiVive, a 3 milligram naloxone hydrochloride spray manufactured by Harm Reduction Therapeutics. The Bethesda, Md., non-profit is the second company to receive approval for over-thecounter sales of the drug, which would be available at drug stores, convenience stores, gas stations and online. The FDA approved Narcan for OTC sales in March. "We know naloxone is a powerful tool to help quickly reverse the effects of opioids during an overdose," FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said. "Ensuring naloxone is widely available, especially as an approved OTC product, makes a critical tool available to help protect public health." Heat can increase mental health issues While the record-breaking heat the United States is experiencing this summer can stress people to their limits, it can be particularly hard to navigate for those with mental health issues. Excessive heat can cause anger, irritability, aggression, discomfort, stress and fatigue. The most vulnerable groups include those with preexisting conditions and people who use abuse substances like alcohol. Heat can make mental health issues worse, including aggressive behavior and mental fogging. In the worst case, confusion and disorientation can occur. What can someone with mental health issues do? Researchers recommends hydrating and keeping your head covered outside. Pour water on your head to cool down and try staying in shade. coast to coast Sarah Silverman slams actors for taking indie jobs during strike Actress and comedian Sarah Silvermanhas taken to Instagram to criticize artists who are working under independent film waivers during the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes, which have shut down most U.S. film and TV productions. "Set me straight and I'll take this down. What am I not getting?#UnionStrong #WGA #sagaftra," Silverman captioned last week’s F-bomb-peppered video, which already has gotten more than 50,000 "likes." In the clip, Silverman said she was "pissed off" because she and a lot of other performers have declined roles in non-studio backed projects, believing they would be hurting the overall cause by "scabbing." She added that she doesn't know whether she is more angry at the actors for taking the jobs in low-budget films and TV shows -- which will eventually end up on the platforms they are striking against -- or at the union for granting the waivers. "The strike ends when they come to the table and we make a deal and agreement," Silverman said, warning that some artists working during the strike through the loophole of waivers could "exponentially prolong" the larger work stoppage. WGA has been on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers since May andSAG joined themtwo weeks ago. Sarah Silverman

Page 30 HAPPENINGS August 3, 2023 www.hap2it.com August 3, 2023 through August 9, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Life is full of whims and now may be the time to follow them. Spend some time or money on things that can help you appreciate life’s simple pleasures. Overcoming objection can be easier when your respect other’s opinions. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You could be content to be highly visible in public, but enjoy your romantic moments in private. You may be happy to spend more time with family or friends and can easily balance your social life and your obligations. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You could only want to hear what you want to right now. Double check your figures or reexamine contracts and try not to get distracted by free-lunch schemes or be persuaded into making major changes to your financial situation. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Seeing is believing, they say, but there are times when you view an optical illusion. Some situations are like the intricate paintings of a woman’s face that reveals a field of flowers when seen at a different angle. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You may have a reputation for being able to easily adapt to new situations or rethink your current position. Surprising events might offer challenges, but you could be well prepared to shift gears if the occasion calls for it. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Your eagerness and can-do attitude can impress others. An enthusiastic approach to innovative ideas and valuable information could earn you the title of wunderkind. Your loved ones may benefit from your positive input. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): If weighty personal or relationship concerns are at the front of your mind it may be time to give yourself some breathing room. Your well-honed business skills can be useful on the job or when considering financial matters. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): A puzzling situation may freeze you for a few hours. You could be stopped in your tracks, afraid to move in any direction right now. Take your time to find your way out of this dilemma and work towards a resolution. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): When you feel you are in too deep you may not know which way is up. Regain your sense of direction by looking for the light. A good friend might put business matters into perspective and provide sound financial advice. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Your smile could win someone’s heart or light the fires of affection. New friendships may lose their luster quickly, but loyal relationships can bring joy for a long time to come. If someone creates a mix-up offer forgiveness. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): It may be best to choose the sure thing rather than gambling with your valuable resources. You could be distracted by surprising family disclosures or by friends’ invitations to participate with them in their hobbies. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): If given the right incentive even an old dog can learn new tricks. There may be moments when you feel you’re past your prime. A new and interesting partner could be a welcome source of motivation and inspiration. ACROSS 1 First lady Biden 5 Homeopathic treatment for bruises 11 "Say that's true ...
