Within minutes, the audience at theKenosha Comedy Club will feel less likespectators and more like participants insomething shared.“Well, honestly? I don’t mind being calledSkippy,” Marc Price says, leaning into thenickname that has followed him since FamilyTies. “I’m used to it—hell, my own family stillcalls me that. It’s basically my stripper name…except instead of ‘Diamond’ or ‘Raven,’ it’sjust ‘Skippy.’ And yeah, the tips are terrible.”That mix of self-awareness and sharp timing isat the heart of a weekend that offers not one, butthree distinct experiences: a stand-upperformance, an interactive Comedy Bingonight, and a 40th anniversary screening of thecult film Trick or Treat—complete with livecommentary from Price himself.Each is different in format. All are rooted in thesame place: a lifelong love of comedy. And youcan see them all at the Kenosha Comedy Clubon April 24 and 25. The Trick or Treat April 24show begins at 8pm. On April 25, Bingo starts at5pm, with the comedy show kicking off at 8pm. Long before television fame, Price was a kidchasing laughs. “I actually started stand-up atfourteen—did Merv Griffin, crushed it, andthat’s how they sniffed me out for Family Ties,”he says. “Truth is, comedy was my first love; Igrew up joining my dad on stage.”That early immersion still shapes his act today.It’s not a nostalgia set—it’s a blend of stylesthat reflects decades of influence. “My show isa lot like the weather in Kenosha: wait a littlebit and it’ll change up.”Those changes come from a wide comediclineage. Price studied old-school masters likeGeorge Burns, Joey Bishop and MiltonBerle, then found himself immersed in thehigh-energy world of The Comedy Storealongside Jim Carrey, Andrew Dice Clay andSam Kinison.“So in my show you’ll find a little silly, a littlesmart, some physical comedy, stuff about thenews, observational pieces, true stories frommy real life, and some zany sketch-like antics,”he says. “For instance, in Kenosha live onstage—we’re gonna make my Dancing with theStars audition tape…”The goal isn’t just laughs—it’s unpredictability.“What can audiences expect for my show?” headds. “Not a refund!”If stand-up is the foundation, Comedy Bingo iswhere Price stretches the format. “ComedyBingo? It’s comedy plus bingo equalsreinvented,” he says. “Not real bingo—waymore fun. Not your average stand-up show,either; we’ve all seen enough of those.”Audience members receive bingo cards—butinstead of numbers, the squares feature joketopics and punchlines. As comics perform, thecrowd marks off what they hear. The first to getbingo wins.But the real win is engagement.“As comedians riff, you cross ‘em off,” Priceexplains. “I host, I lead, I keep it rolling.Comedians freak out—‘What if the crowd’s toobusy staring at their card?’ Nope. Turns outthey listen harder. Laughs hit bigger.”The concept draws directly from anotherchapter of his career—one many fans may notknow.“A lot of people don’t know that I spent manyyears as a producer behind the scenes inHollywood—Game Show Network, TBS, FoodNetwork, E!, Animal Planet and more,” hesays. “Doing this live? Feels like cominghome.”For Price, it’s the perfect intersection ofstructure and spontaneity.“I get to bounce off the other comics, prep with‘em—it’s my favorite part.”The third element of the weekend shiftsgears—from live performance to sharedmemory.“It’s the 40th anniversary of Trick or Treat, anda lot of people love the film,” Price says. “Ithink it’s because they remember it—they wereheavy metal teenagers themselves.” Releasedin 1986, the film has endured thanks to itsmusic, its attitude, and its cast.“And of course, there’s Ozzy Osbourne andGene Simmons. The soundtrack is a reallyimportant part of the movie—Fastway, a greatheavy metal band—and it’s incredible. Thenthere’s our star, Tony Fields… he broughtsomething special to that role that people stilllove all these years later.”Price’s role during the screening is partcommentator, part curator of memories. “I’lltell stories and look back at the memories fromwhen we made the film—share a little behindthe-scenes stuff,” he says. “I figured out whereto do it so I don’t ruin the movie. I don’t talkthrough the whole thing; I talk when there’sspace.”It’s designed to enhance the experience, notinterrupt it. “If you’ve seen the movie before,it’ll definitely be a different experience,” hesays. “And if you’ve never seen it, I hope Idon’t ruin it for ya… but I think it’ll just add toit.”For Price, returning to the road—and to placeslike Kenosha—isn’t just about performing. It’sabout perspective.“Yeah, first of all, it gives me a chance to getout of Hollywood where everyone’s overlywoke,” he says with a laugh. “I’m like, take anap—it’s crazy how people are there. I thinkthere’s something in the kale.”Then he pivots to something more grounded.“When I come to the Midwest, I get to hang outwith real people and real audiences that… justhave more fun.”That authenticity, he suggests, is what keepshim coming back.“You think everyone’s partying out inHollywood,” he says. “But trust me, I have a lotmore fun partying on the road.”Three events. With astring of whitewashed hill towns,sunny skies, vibrant festivals, andtempting tapas, Andalucía is thesoul of Spain – almoststereotypically so.Most tourists hit Andalucía’s threegreat cities – Granada, Córdoba,and Sevilla – or the Costa del Sol.But for something more authentic,I like exploring the region’sinterior along the Route of theWhite Hill Towns (Ruta de losPueblos Blancos). This is a charmbracelet of cute villages that aremore accessible and friendlier thanthe big cities, but still pack awallop of traditional Spanishculture. Whether crouching in aravine or perched atop a hill, eachtown – painted white to stay coolin scorching summers – has apersonality and a story of its own.Exploring these hill towns is bestby car, as only two are easilyaccessible by publictransportation: Arcos de laFrontera (by bus) and Ronda (bytrain).Arcos de la Frontera is aphotographer's feast. It smothersits hilltop, tumbling down its backlike the train of a wedding dress.The fairy-tale old center is alabyrinthine wonderland, whereyou can viewpoint-hop all the waythrough town and feel the windfunnel through the narrow streetsas cars inch around tight corners.Around town, I like to peekdiscreetly into private patios.These wonderful, cool-tiledcourtyards, filled with plants,pools, and happy family activities,are typical of the region.Arcos' name – de la Fronterameans \"on the frontier\" – and mainchurch are reminders of theReconquista, the centuries-longfight to take Spain back from theMuslim Moors. After Christianforces retook Arcos, the mosquewas demolished, and a church wasbuilt on its ruins. Today, these hilltowns – no longer strategic – arejust passing time peacefully.From Arcos, a short drive takesyou to Ronda. With nearly 35,000people, it's the most substantialand entertaining home base on theroute.Ronda’s main attractions are itsgorge-spanning bridges, anintriguing old town, and one of theoldest bullrings in Spain. Built in1785, the bullring’s columnscorral the action, creating a kind ofNeoclassical theater. But the realjoy here lies in exploring Ronda’sback streets and taking in itsbeautiful balconies, wispygardens, and panoramic views.Walking the streets, you feel astrong local pride and acommunity where everyone seemsto know everyone. During the day,the town gets crowded withtourists from the nearby Costa delSol. But in the evening, localsreclaim their streets and squares,and a thriving tapas scene takesover.Ronda's breathtaking perch abovea deep gorge, while visuallydramatic today, was practical andvital when it was built. For theMoors, it provided a toughbastion, one of the last to beconquered by the Spaniards in1485. The ravine divides Rondainto its old Moorish town and therelatively modern new town,which was built after theReconquista. But since my husband and Istarted getting Social Securitybenefits about 15 years ago, thecorrespondence I got from theSocial Security Administrationshowed my husband's SocialSecurity number with a letter \"B\"behind it. Somebody at a SocialSecurity office once told me thismeant I was getting my wife'sbenefits on his record. How doesthe letter \"B\" stand for a wife?And now that my husband hasdied, I notice that any mail I getfrom the SSA shows my husband'snumber with a letter \"D.\" Doesthis mean \"deceased?\"A: No, it doesn't mean deceased.Believe it or not, it stands for\"widow!\" You may legitimatelywonder why in the world a \"D\"means widow. Wouldn't you thinkit should be a \"W?\" I will use thiscolumn to explain the mysteriousworld of Social Security claimnumbers. Social SecurityAdministration jargon for thesenumbers is \"BIC codes.\" BICstands for \"beneficiaryidentification code.\"First of all, what is a \"claimnumber?\" And how does it differfrom a Social Security number?Almost everyone in this countryhas a Social Security number. It'sthe number you give to youremployer if you get a job, and it'sthe number you would use to filean income tax return. It's also thenumber that many governmentagencies and private companiesuse as a personal identificationnumber for you. (The use of theSSN for personal identification isa topic for another column.)But a claim number is the SocialSecurity number on which you areclaiming Social Security benefits.And it's always followed by a littleletter symbol to indicate the kindof benefit you have claimed. Formany people, their claim numberis simply their own SocialSecurity number with a lettersymbol following it -- usually an\"A.\" But some people claim SocialSecurity benefits on anotherperson's Social Security record --almost always a spouse andsometimes a parent. So their claimnumber is the spouse's or parent'sSocial Security number, followedby the appropriate claims symbol.The little claims symbols were notassigned in any sort of meaningfulpattern. In other words, the letter\"R\" was not used to indicate\"retirement\" benefits and the letter\"W\" wasn't used to indicate\"wife's\" or \"widow's\" benefits. (Seebelow for more information.)W -- You are getting disabledwidow's benefits on your deceasedhusband's account.W1 -- You are getting disabledwidow's benefits on your deceasedwife's account.More about the \"T\" code. In thepast, the \"T\" code was reservedonly for those very few peoplewho were not eligible for any kindof Social Security benefit but hadpaid taxes into the Medicareprogram. But when the fullretirement age climbed beyondage 65, and people affected by thatchange started reaching that age,the SSA had to change its claimsfiling rules. Those rules say thatyou can file for Medicare at age 65without having to file for SocialSecurity benefits. And these folkshad to be given a claim number.It couldn't be an \"A\" BIC code,which again means you are gettingretirement benefits. So, they usedthe \"T\" code, and the definitionwas changed to \"entitled toMedicare but not yet entitled toSocial Security.\" That means theonce little-used \"T\" BIC is nowvery common. There are currentlymillions of \"T\" beneficiaries. Ifyou are one, meaning you tookMedicare at 65 but are waitinguntil full retirement age, or maybeage 70, to file for Social Security,whenever you do that, your claimnumber will change from yourSSN with a \"T\" to your SSN withan \"A.\"Again, this list is not complete. Infact, if you do a Google search for\"Social Security BIC codes,\" youwill find a list of about a hundredcodes, most of them for extremelyrare benefits. My list in thiscolumn shows only the morecommon beneficiary codes. But\"common\" is a relative term.Many of the benefits listed aboveare infrequently paid. Forexample, you could almost counton your hands the number ofpeople getting \"F\" (parents'benefits) or \"W1\" (disabledwidower's benefits). To alleviate theirboredom, I offer a simple solution:Come to my place.Last week I checked into one ofLas Vegas Strip hotels for a twonight business trip. I arrivedaround 8:30 p.m. to find my roomjust the way one would expect in ahotel of this magnitude: a kingsized bed with crisp, cleansmelling sheets, an abundance offolded towels, a coffee makerstocked with regular and decafpods and two “complementary”water bottles, even though thatword doesn’t actually exist inVegas. I once received a“complementary” Miller Lite afterlosing $180 playing craps.The room rate was $109 a night,but I was also charged a daily $62“resort fee,” for services I neverused. Those included the pool, thefitness center and, I assume,housekeeping.The next morning, upon realizing Iwould be in the room for most ofthe day dealing with Zoom callsand catching up on emails, Iplaced the “Do Not Disturb” signon my door, but not beforeinforming a female housekeeperon my floor that I would not berequiring service. I mean, whatexactly would she do? Replace thelone towel I used for my morningshower? Change the sheets on thebed that I’d slept in for, at most,five hours? Doing so wouldrequire me leaving the room,accompanied by my laptop, andattempting to moderate a Zoomcall in a casino.I take dozens of business tripseach year and, naturally, stay indozens of hotels. When I check in,the front desk staff refers to me asa mineral (i.e. “Thank you, Mr.Schwem, for being a Diamondmember” or “I see you havePlatinum status.”). One wouldthink I would request, evenDEMAND, housekeeping serviceon a daily basis. Yet I find myselfshunning housekeeping moreoften and I’m not the only one, asevidenced by the responses fromFacebook contacts when asked ifthey do the same.“If I have coffee in the room, Idon’t need the maid service.”“No, unless I’m staying longerthan four or five nights.”“I hang up my own towels to dryso I can use the same towel. Whouses a new towel every day athome?”I found the last comment to be atouch ironic because hotelhousekeeping service offers gueststhe chance to experiencesomething we don’t get at home— namely, the opportunity to openour front doors and see everythingin a far tidier state than when welast closed those very doors.As I write this column, I’msimultaneously looking around myone-bedroom condominium, a unitwith just slightly more squarefootage than my Vegas hotel room.A warm stretch of Chicago winterprompted me to open my balconydoor, letting in warm city breezesbut also coating my furniture witha layer of city dust.
