So, I liketo say that this show waspresented to us as sort of The Warof the Roses, if one of them wassix inches tall and, then, this is acouple in competition that needsto get back to partnership,\" sheadded. \"That's where you will findthem, hopefully, by the end.\"Banks said she sees Lindy'sminiaturization as a metaphor forhow inconsequential she feels inLes' eyes.\"They're literally not living in thesame world and, not only that, he'smade her feel small anddiminished and like what shecares about doesn't matter to himand, so, now that feels even biggerand grander,\" she explained.\"I loved that whole idea of, 'We'regoing to make those feelingsliteral,' and the literalness of themis going to enhance everythingthat the audience is feeling for thiscouple.\"\"It will push them towardsresolving [their relationship] oneway or another,\" Macfadyennoted.\"It's like she becomes the crisisthat they have to deal with in themoment. They can't avoid it andput it off anymore,\" Banks said.\"And they've clearly beenavoiding repairing theirrelationship, but now they have torepair this, or she might be dead.\"Macfadyen thinks the show'sthemes will resonate with viewers.\"It's about family -- daughters,sons, fathers, mothers,\" he said.\"So much about my sense ofisolation and feeling small startedwith my mother and our icyrelationship and his father, youcome to find out, didn't validatehim in the way that his brothersgot validated,\" Banks said. \"It'ssort of about, 'How are we goingto break this series of traumas andnot pass it on to our owndaughter?' All of that is superrelatable stuff.\"\"There is also adjacent stuff likeego and ambition, and tech andscience,\" Macfadyen added.Because of their supposed sizediscrepancies, the actors didn'tactually film many of their scenestogether.The stars helped each otherprepare, however, and theircharacters' interactions wereflawlessly stitched together in theediting room.\"We would run scenes together,\"Macfadyen recalled.\"We read it. In the Romaniancountryside, the nation’s historyand traditional culture live on –vividly.A hard-fought past is evident inthe fortress-like churches scatteredthrough the central region ofTransylvania. In medieval times,big towns were well-protected, butsmaller villages were vulnerable toinvaders. So industrious Germansettlers, imported by the localoverlords to tame the wild frontier,fortified their churches.Today, most of Romania’s ethnicGermans are gone, havingemigrated in the late 19th centuryor fled to Germany after WorldWar II or after the fall ofcommunism in 1989. But theirlegacy lives on: Stepping insidethese churches feels like steppingback into medieval Germany.Decoration is humble, pews aresimple benches, and Bible quotesare in German.The whitewashed and ramshacklechurch of Viscri, hidden deep inthe Transylvanian hills, is one ofthe oldest (c. 1100). Wander through any village andpeek into family compounds. Eachone is marked with a huge,ceremonial wooden gateway – justbig enough for a hay-loaded horsecart to trot through. I have written about itin this column, joked about itonstage in my stand-up act, andlearned to assemble all of thesebreathless requests together in anemail folder so I can rid them ofmy life with a simple “delete all”click.But this one stood out, for it notonly asked me to rate my lastJewel-Osco shopping experience,but items I purchased.Specifically, it asked me to write areview of an 8-ounce package ofmedium shredded Lucernecheddar cheese. That’s a difficult opportunity toturn down, considering I am ajournalist who specializes in thewritten word, and a comedian whoworks, at most, one hour a night. Iopened my laptop, determined tomake this review one for the ageswhile, simultaneously, insertingenough sarcasm so the marketingteam at Jewel-Osco realizes theludicrous nature of their requestsand they can unsubscribe me.First I was asked how many starsthe cheese deserved. Although Iam in the minority, I am anenthusiastic five star proponent. Ifmy Uber driver delivers me to thecorrect location without collidingwith anything, or anybody? Fivestars!If my restaurant meal did notresult in food poisoning, and myserver wrote it down and deliveredit correctly? Five stars. I had only used the cheese oncewhen the email arrived. Thinkingback, I added it to a morningomelet, which definitely enhancedthe flavor. Cheese tends to do that,as any chef knows, particularly thefive-star variety.Only the Highest Rating for This CheeseI clicked “five stars,” knowingwhat was coming next.“What did you like about theproduct? What could beimproved?” asked Jewel-Osco.I decided to tackle the firstquestion while the omelet was stillfresh in my head.“What impressed me most aboutthe cheese was the uniformity ofeach ‘shred,’” I began. “So often I open similar cheesepackages, only to find bits ofcheese that are misshapen, lackingin the pale orange color oneexpects from cheese and clearlynot worthy of existing alongsidetheir fellow cheese remnants.“This has caused great duress inthe past, sometimes forcing me toswitch my breakfast meal tooatmeal. But don’t get me startedon the cardboard tube Quaker Oatsdares to house its product in! I hadto take a mental health day afterseeing a slight dent in thepackaging. “Yet, upon examining all 1,147slivers of cheddar, I was satisfiedLucerne had not tried tobamboozle me into thinking I waspurchasing anything short of thecompany’s finest efforts. Icommend them for their attentionto detail.”But Will the Cheese Stay Fresh?I still had to address the“improvement” query. Afterpraising the cheese’s appearanceand taste, I chose to focus on thezipper closure designed to keepthe cheese fresh in the bag, whileenticing shelf appearance. “I did have an issue with thezipper thingy,” I wrote, unable toproduce a technical term for theplastic piece. “There was amoment when the zipper becamestuck as I was resealing thecheese. Only when I reversed thezipper’s direction, and made asecond attempt, did this issuecorrect itself. My blood pressureand heart rate returned to normal.”Finally, at Jewel-Osco’s request, Igave my review a title:“Brought to My Knees by thisAmazing Cheese!”Satisfied, I clicked “submit,”closed my laptop and venturedoutside for a long bike ride. I’m having the exact sameresult with my current home inNew Hampshire. It was lastpainted 15 years ago with the bestpaint I could buy. Allow me toshare with you the simple secretsto obtain results like mine.It’s essential to know that paintis just colored glue. Paintchemists refer to the glue asresin. There are many differenttypes of glue. For example, thebasic white glue kids use inkindergarten is nearly identical tothe lowest-quality paint you canbuy. You know yellow carpenter’s glue is far superior, and youcan get paints that have this betterresin base.Epoxy is very strong, and yes,you can purchase epoxy paint.The only issue is it’s a bit moredifficult to work with. Have youever applied clear urethane to woodwork or furniture? Haveyou noticed how sticky anddurable it is?That’s the exterior paint that Iuse: paint that has a urethaneresin. It’s water-based and aseasy to apply and clean up as anywater-based exterior paint.Your past failures with exteriorpaint might be traced to any number of shortcuts or mistakes.Allow me to share what I feelmight be the most common ones.First and foremost, when was thelast time you read and followedthe instructions on the label of thepaint can? I’d be willing to up mybet that less than 20% of homeowners take the time to do this.Just about every label I’ve readmentions applying the paint to aclean, dry surface. What’s yourdefinition of clean? Would yousay your oily filthy body is cleanif you stand in a shower under thehighest pressure your skin cantolerate for 20 minutes beforeyou towel off?The answer is no. Yet you mayhave used a pressure washer thelast time you painted somethingoutdoors to clean it. Have youever used a pressure washer toclean your filthy car holding thewand as close to the surface asyou feel comfortable? If you thenallowed your car to air dry, you’llnotice there is still a stubborn thinfilm of dirt on the paint. Your caris not clean after it’s pressurewashed.To get your body clean in ashower, you probably rub yourskin with soap. You might evenuse a brush or microfiber towel.This mechanical agitation of thesurface in conjunction with thesoap is what gets your skin clean.You should do the exact samething with whatever you intend topaint. Special brushes used toclean large RVs are perfect forhouse cleaning. I have a specialone I’ve had for 30 years thatdoes a tremendous job.Wood is the most difficultthing for paint to adhere to. Woodis hygroscopic. This means itchanges its shape in response tomoisture content. The steel orplastic on your car doesn’t dothis. The expansion and contraction of the wood can be too muchfor a cheap paint to handle. If so,the paint loses its grip on thewood and peels or flakes.You can minimize the expansion and contraction of wood bypainting all the sides and cutedges of the wood. Imagineshrink-wrapping the wood withpaint. I know this is lots of extrawork, but it will pay off in spadesin the long term. It’s especiallyimportant to paint the end grainof wood. This is where waterenters into wood with ease.Pay attention to what the paintlabel says about the air temperature. It will provide a minimumand maximum temperature rangefor application. Don’t exceedthis! What’s more, follow thesun. Painted surfaces should notbe exposed to direct sunlight if atall possible. The paint will drytoo quickly. The best days topaint are overcast ones with no orlight wind.Does your label say to use aprimer? If so, did you know thatyou get the best results by applying the finish paint as soon as theprimer is dry to the touch? Thefinish paint and the primer canchemically bond to one another,since the primer has yet to fullycure. She was verypolite and often respondedwith a few questions. Iuncovered a potential problem in her specificationswith respect to her waterheater. I felt it was too smalland suggested she considerinstalling a tankless heaterin her new home.This nice woman askedme if I’d be kind enough toreview a bid she receivedfrom a plumber to do thework in her new home. Iobliged and was stunnedwhen I studied it. The quoteonly covered the plumbingdrain pipes and water linesthat would be under the slabof the house.It’s important for you torealize this is just a two-bathhouse with a small halfbath. The plumber’s quotewas for $38,000. I almostfell out of my chair. I did avery fast estimate of materials. I felt all the pipes andfittings could be purchasedfor $2,500. Three thousanddollars of washed gravelwould be needed to fillaround the pipes. I then estimated it would take twoexperienced plumbers aboutfour days, at most, to do thework.Do the math yourself andyou’ll see that something isamiss. I emailed the womanand suggested that I create aset of specifications for theplumbing job. The specifications would require theplumbers to break downtheir bids into labor andmaterials. They would alsohave to list the hourly rate aworker is paid in case achange order is requested.Creating specifications isnot that hard for many jobs.You can do it yourself bygetting your inspirationfrom the installation instructions for the products youwant installed in your home.Try it. Pick out a specificwindow, and then go readthe installation instructions.You’ll see that all the important steps required to ensurethat the window will perform well are in the instructions. Don’t assume anycontractor is going toalways do what’s right.
