There’s somethingseductively charming about thiscountry, its people, and la dolcevita. I always feel at home in Italy,whether struggling onto a crowdedbus in Rome, navigating the funchaos of Naples, sipping a cocktailin a Venetian bar, or sitting on thebanister of Florence’s PonteVecchio for a midnight streetmusic concert.But I also seek escapes from Italy'surban intensity. When I'm inRome, I like to travel about 20miles east to the hill town ofTivoli, a popular retreat sinceancient times. Today it's famousfor two very different villas:Hadrian's Villa, a Romanemperor's countryside getaway,and Villa d'Este, the lush andwatery 16th-century residence of aCatholic cardinal.Hadrian (ruled AD 117-138) had aperfectly good villa in Rome, buthe preferred to live outside thecapital, and toward the end of hisreign, he lived full-time at Tivoli.Just as Louis XIV governedFrance from Versailles rather thanParis, Hadrian ruled Rome fromthis villa complex of more than300 evocative acres.An architect, lover of Greekculture, and great traveler, Hadrianenvisioned the site as a microcosmof the lands he ruled, which at thatpoint stretched from Great Britainto Iraq. In the spirit of Legoland,Epcot, and Las Vegas, he recreated famous structures fromaround the world, producing akind of diorama of his empire.By the time Hadrian was finished,he’d erected more than 30buildings and created extensivegardens. With libraries, temples,baths, theaters, and palaces forhimself and his friends and staff,the estate was completely selfcontained.Although most buildings havelong since vanished, you can feelHadrian’s hand in some remainingstructures. The emperorsurrounded a rectangular waterbasin – meant to represent the Nile– with columns and statues,including copies of the caryatidshe had admired at the Acropolis.At one end he built a temple inmemory of his close friend (andperhaps lover) Antinous, who hadtragically drowned in the Nile.Regrettably, with the fall of theempire, this “Versailles of AncientRome” was first plundered bybarbarians and then byRenaissance big shots, who allwanted something classical intheir courtyards. They even burnedthe marble to make lime forcement. While some of thescavenged art ended up acrosstown at the Villa d’Este, much of itwound up far away in museumsthroughout Europe.Much later, in 1550, anotherpatron of the arts, CardinalIppolito d’Este, furthertransformed the Tivoli landscape.Even though he was a man of thecloth, Ippolito, cultured andwealthy, lived like a secularprince. When he lost a closelycontested election to be the nextpope in 1549, he consoled himselfby building his sumptuous villa inTivoli. He cleared a Benedictineconvent from the site and erected aluxurious Renaissance palace,with elaborately frescoed wallsand ceilings.But the main attraction is thespectacular garden (which wasn’tfully installed until after Ippolito’sdeath). A hallmark of Italiandesign, it clings to a steep hillcascading with pools, streams,waterfalls, and thunderingfountains. Towering cypress,boxwood hedges, Roman statuary,and pleasant paths direct the eyetoward stately vistas all around.Creating such an elaborate waterpark required the collaboration ofan architect (to lay out the garden),a hydraulic engineer (to get waterto the site), and a plumber (tomake sure the fountains worked).At Tivoli, the hillside site wasmassively excavated and reengineered so the water featurescould be gravity-fed.Pirro Ligorio, Tivoli’s architect,was conveniently also excavatingHadrian’s Villa at the same time.That site provided much ininspiration – and raw material –for the fountains of Villa d’Este.Ligorio basically used Hadrian’sVilla as a quarry to providestatuary and decorative stoneworkfor his vision.After Ippolito’s death, the estatewas passed down in the Estefamily, but by the 19th century thehouse was in disrepair and thefountains plugged up. Now in thehands of the Italian state, it’s beencompletely restored, with all itsfabulous water features flowingagain.While Hadrian’s Villa is abouthaunting ruins and a storiedhistory, Villa d’Este is simplybeautiful and relaxing (and isespecially appealing when it’ssweltering in Rome). The twosights complement each other welland combine to make a satisfyingday trip from Rome. An easysubway/bus combination gets youfrom the city to Tivoli, where apublic bus connects the two villas.When I'm in Italy, I savor mycappuccino and imagine what itwas like centuries ago. At Tivoli, Ican ramble through the rabble andrubble, mentally resurrecting thoseancient stones. Until then, they wereheard but not seen. Suddenly theyseemed like our friends — averagepeople with senses of humor andcreativity that went well beyondtheir music. We saw PeterGabriel’s smiling face shake anddissolve thanks to, at the time,pioneering techniques likeclaymation and stop-motionanimation, as he warbled his hit“Sledgehammer.” Up until then,Peter Gabriel could have stoodbehind me in the grocery store lineand I would have been clueless.We watched Michael Jacksondance with “gang members” in“Beat It” and then marvel that hecould dance even better withmonsters in “Thriller.” We saw JonBon Jovi sing “Wanted Dead orAlive” to a packed arena and, inthe next frame, witnessed himsitting alone in a diner. It made uscontemplate whether being a rockstar was really all that glamorous.We sympathized with Madonnaand her decision to keep herunborn child in “Papa Don’tPreach.” We realized CindyLauper had fewer problems as shecame home in the morning lightsinging, “Girls Just Wanna HaveFun.” Girls dressed like Lauperwhile guys wondered how GeorgeMichael, frontman of some newgroup called Wham, could keephis hair in place as he shimmiedthrough “Wake Me Up Before YouGo-Go.” And who was the otherguy in Wham, anyway?When MTV Taught aGeneration How to PayAttentionWe donated to Ethiopian faminerelief while watching MTVbroadcast Live Aid. We enviedMartha Quinn and the other MTV“VJs” for having the world’scoolest jobs. We watchedunknown bands like U2 and DuranDuran become global popsensations simply because of theirvideos.Perhaps we saw MTV’s deathcoming, as the channel beganexperimenting with reality showslike “The Real World,” eventhough taking 20-somethings andforcing them to live in a multimillion dollar home was hardlysteeped in reality. The music we“watched” began playing on“oldies” stations, yet whenever weheard a track playing in theminivan as we chauffeured ourkids to soccer practice, weimmediately thought of the videothat accompanied it. Weremembered our whereaboutswhen we first saw Billy Idol sneerabout a “White Wedding.”So rest in peace, MTV. You aregone but certainly not forgotten.
