As he explained in a recentHappenings Magazine interview,Arnold is bringing all of it withhim—especially after a year thatnearly knocked him off the roadfor good.Just a few months ago, thecomedian suffered a serious backinjury while on tour, the kind ofaccident that sounds mundaneuntil you hear how it happened.Arnold, who performs in roughly75 cities a year, woke up in a hotelroom, disoriented—as roadcomics often are—and rushedtoward where he thought thebathroom was.“There was a wall there,” he said.“And I went full speed into it andstraight down on my back.”The fall resulted in a crushedvertebra—his L3—and requiredimmediate hospitalization. For amoment, the situation carriedfrightening implications.“The spinal cord is right there,”Arnold explained. “You startthinking about paralysis.”A native Iowan, he was treated atthe University of Iowa’s hospitalsystem before transferring to anintensive rehabilitation facility inCalifornia. What followed wasweeks of physical therapy thatArnold describes, withcharacteristic bluntness, as “a painin the butt—but you’ve got to doit.”What stands out, though, is howquickly his focus shifted fromrecovery to returning to the stage.“When they asked me what mynext job was and I said ‘a comedyclub,’ they took it seriously,” hesaid. “They measured the steps ata club and built a version of it inthe gym. Every day I practicedgetting up onstage.”Within weeks, Arnold wastraveling again. He admits he hadto take things more slowly, oftenrelying on a wheelchair inairports—but even that becamematerial.“The wheelchair at the airport isvery handy,” he joked. “I don’tknow if I’ll ever give that up.”Of course, nothing in Arnold’s lifeseems to happen quietly. Amoment at LAX became a perfectexample. After reassuring apaparazzi videographer that hewas “absolutely fine,” Arnold wasimmediately instructed by medicalstaff to lie down on a gurney—right in front of the cameras.“I said, ‘You have to include that,’” he recalled, laughing. “That’sthe funniest part. I just toldeveryone I’m fine, and then—boom—‘You need to lay downright now.’ ”It’s a perfect snapshot of what fanscan expect in Kenosha: acomedian who doesn’t just telljokes but turns real life—especially the messy parts—intocomedy.Arnold’s willingness to sharethose messy parts has defined hiscareer. That includeshis high-profile marriage toRoseanne Barr, which remains oneof the most talked-about chaptersof his life.During the interview, Arnoldrevisited a now-infamous momentinvolving Barr’s performance ofthe national anthem at a baseballgame—a performance thatquickly spiraled into controversy.“I tried to talk her out of it,” hesaid. “That’s a hard song. His agent informed us that Yakov, who normally avoids cold weather dates, would be in Chicago for a Saturday testimonial dinner and would be available for one, and only one, 4 pm show on Sunday, December 21. Needless to say, we jumped on the date and what transpired with his performance was magic, pure magic, ending with a standing ovation. After the show, Yakov confessed to us that immediately after he had committed to our date he had second thoughts, regrets that he had accepted our offer. However, he was so moved by the enthusiasm and warmth of the crowd that he realized our community is different, something special. The feelings seem to be mutual with an overwhelming response from fans who were in the audience that cold December afternoon and here’s what a few of them had to say after his performance.“Yakov is hilarious and witty and pure comedy gold. Even worse,what’s with the bulkier models ofear wear like Beats headphones?You all look like you work ateither a shooting range or on anairport tarmac. Do you even knowwhat a BIRD sounds like? Maybeif that bird had a podcast orwarbled like Sabrina Carpenter,then you’d know. There are other ways to block outextraneous, outdoor sounds, ifthat’s what you desire. Stayinghome with the windows shutcomes to mind. But you seem towant a change of scenery. Whyelse would you sit at the corner ofa bar, laptop open and headphonesfirmly in place? I observed a solofemale patron doing just this theother night while I spent theevening with friends. We werehaving a great time listening toone another’s stories andcommenting. Maybe she trulywanted solitude but was alsocraving a $16 cocktail.It’s no secret we retreated into acollective shell during thepandemic and we are struggling toemerge. Return-to-office policies,where personal contact isunavoidable, are still met withresistance. Office buildingscontinue sitting vacant, at least inChicago where I live. But can’t weat least TRY to converse with oneanother? To experience the soundof nature around us, even if thatmight include two drivers spewingprofanities at one another as theyargue over a parking space?Or does this headphone lovinggeneration know something Idon’t?Testing the Beats: A Grocery StoreHeadphones ExperimentI decided to put their preferencesto a test. Beats headphones atopmy head one rainy morning, Iventured into my local grocerystore. I’d chosen “Today’s Hits,”an Amazon Music playlistfeaturing the artists myheadphone-loving neighborsenjoy. Chappell Roan sang aboutthe Pink Pony Club as I walked thehalf mile to the store; Olivia Deanwas describing the man sheneeded as I entered.Once inside I found myselfremoving my headphones moreoften than I was using them. In theproduce section, I glanced up fromthe avocados I was examining tosee an elderly woman staring atme, looking slightly annoyed.“I just need to get by you,” shesaid, after I muted Harry Stylesand raised my right headphonecup.“Sorry,” I replied, moving my cart.Minutes later, while Taylor Swiftsang about some girl namedOphelia, I sensed anannouncement emanating from thestore’s speaker system. Thinkingmaybe there was some sort offlash sale in the meat department, Imoved my Beats to my neck so Icould hear that, yes, an employeewas broadcasting for all to hear.Much to my dismay, there were nosales taking place but shopperswere reminded that dogs inshopping carts are forbidden.Rules like this are probably whatspawned the rise of Instacart.Shopping nearly completed, Iglanced at my list (yes, I still entergrocery stores with a paper list)and realized I was lackingrefrigerated tofu. How’s that for aGen Z item? Unsure where it was,I approached a store employeestocking shelves. I removed myheadphones while he removed oneAirpod. When did it become OKto listen to music, podcasts,motivational speeches orwhatever, during working hours? Iguess it’s OK as long as oneknows where the tofu is.Why We Should Take theHeadphones OffI paid for my items sansheadphones, figuring a monetarytransaction might also require averbal conversation. I was correct,since the clerk reminded me toenter my store PIN before shecould ring up my purchases.Trudging back to my condo withtwo bags in each hand, the soundsof the city filling my ears. Earlymorning rain had given way tosunshine, and the streets wereclogged with cars and pedestriansalike. It’s also whatmakes his live performances unpredictable inthe best way.His stories don’t follow a straight line—theyloop, detour and build, often landing in placesthat feel both shocking and strangely relatable.That same unpredictability shaped one of thedefining moments of his film career: landing arole in the Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbusterTrue Lies.Arnold initially assumed his audition withdirector James Cameron was just a courtesy.“I thought it was a ‘mercy meeting,’ ” he said.“I didn’t even read the scene ahead of timebecause I figured I wasn’t getting the movie.”Instead, his raw approach impressed Cameronimmediately.
