Page 4 HAPPENINGS March 02, 2023 www.hap2it.com Keri Russell said the premise of Cocaine Bear, now in theaters, was too good to pass up. "It was just wacky enough that I couldn't say no," Russell said in a recent Zoom interview. Based on actual events from 1985, Cocaine Bear imagines what happened when a black bear found a stash of drugs from Andrew Thornton's botched air drop. Russell plays Sari, a mother who must find her runaway daughter (Brooklyn Prince) before the coked up bear does. Russell said she was discussing a different project with director Elizabeth Banks. Then Banks pitched Russell on Cocaine Bear. "She called me and said, 'Do you want to read this crazy thing I'm going to direct?'" Russell said. "It felt like such a fun departure. It just felt not heavy, stupid, fun, ridiculous and wild." The film is set in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia, where Thornton's plane actually went down in 1985. The production filmed in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland due to the country's low COVID-19 numbers during the pandemic. On set, human actor Allan Henry played the bear. Using Weta Digital's performancecapture technology, Henry performed the actions of the bear and visual effects artists replaced him with the bear in post-production. Russell experienced a similar process when she starred in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, in which Weta performers also played the apes. Russell said she admired Henry's study of bear behavior, but she responded just as intensely when Banks gave her cues. "I did also appreciate Liz screaming in a microphone from behind going, 'Now his leg's getting ripped off and blood's squirting all over his face! And now he's falling from the tree, but only half of his torso is and it's bloody. Blood is everywhere,'" Russell said. No stranger to action roles, Russell played one of Tom Cruise's trainees in Mission: Impossible III, played a masked smuggler in Star Wars: Episode IX and starred as a Russian spy on The Americans. Russell said the natural elements of Cocaine Bear were as daunting as any other movie she's made. "We had to jump into this icy river at night, which was really cold," Russell said. "It's fine the first time you do it. Then they're like, 'Okay, now dry off, now do it again.'" Although The Americans was also set during the '80s, Elizabeth Jennings never sported a pink track suit like Sari in Cocaine Bear. Russell said her biggest fear was that she would laugh too hard in scenes with Margo Martindale, who was also in The Americans, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. "I was laughing so hard I was afraid I was going to pee my pants," Russell said. "It would be very visible in that pink jumpsuit." After Cocaine Bear, Russell returned to television. Russell has a role in one episode of the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations and stars in the Netflix series The Diplomat. Russell said The Diplomat may appeal to fans of The Americans. However, her character is an American abroad instead of a foreign invader in the United States. "I'm the diplomat," Russell said. Russell plays Kate Wyler, who was transferred from the Middle East to London to address a crisis. Rufus Sewell plays Kate's husband, who may be more of a problem for her than her Americans husband, Philip Jennings, was. "She's a fish out of water there and has this bombastic husband, who is sometimes a liability," Russell said. "It's, again, marriage-based in the diplomatic world." The Diplomat and Extrapolations are both expected to stream later this year. By Fred Topel Keri Russell 'couldn't say no' to 'Cocaine Bear' Born Keri Lynn Russell March 23, 1976 (age 46) Fountain Valley, California Russell was raised in Orange County, California as the middle of three children of mother Stephanie and father, David. The latter being a Nissan Motors executive. Russell first appeared on television at the age of 15 as a cast member of the All-New Mickey Mouse Club where she appeared on the show for seasons four to six. As a teen, she scored small role in the film “Honey I Blew Up the Kid” (1992) and the TV shows “Boy Meets World” and “Married… with Children.” In 1994, she appeared as the “other woman” in the Bon Jovi music video “Always.” The following year, she landed a role in a pilot episode of a TVversion of the Kevin Smith film “Clerks.” The show never was picked up, but is available to view on YouTube. In 1998, she landed a hit as the title character on the WB series Felicity. In 1999, she won a Golden Globe for the role. Russell’s long curly hair was one of her character’s defining characteristics and when the second season kicked off with her sporting a new short hair cut, some speculated this caused the significant drop in the show’s ratings. In 2007, Russell took to the web with a realty show sitcom sponsored by CoverGirl and airing on MySpace called The Keri Chronicles. In 2013, she landed her second signature role as Elizabeth Jennings, a deep-undercover Russian KGB spy living in 1980s America in the FX drama The Americans. She starred opposite actor Matthew Rhys, and the two fell in love on the set. The series ended in 2018 after six seasons, but the relationship carried on, getting married and still together to this day with a son. Russell joined the galaxy far far away with her role as Zorii Bliss in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” (2019). Kerri Russell stars in the new horror-comedy “Cocaine Bear” - which took in over $23M in it’s opening weeklend FYI Keri Russell

A new study in BMJ Open suggests it also leads to sleep problems. Researchers found an association between the eye disease and sleep issues like snoring, daytime sleepiness, insomnia or sleeping too long or too little. The study was observational, so no cause-and-effect could be determined, but the researchers suggest an underlying explanation could relate increased internal eye pressure when lying down. More research is needed. Body of Knowledge Beginning around age 40, it's estimated you lose 1% of your strength every year, with the rate accelerating the older you get. A recent study found that grip strength was a better indicator of life expectancy than blood pressure. But do not fret. Being active throughout your life slows the loss of strength, which, along with muscle mass, can actually be improved well into one's 90s. Get Me That, Stat! It's well known that many physicians take money from drug and medical device makers, sometimes raising concerns about conflicts of interest. A new survey puts numbers to the practice, reporting that 36% of advanced practice clinicians (specialists) accepted payments from the industry compared to 35% of general practice doctors, reports JAMA. How that translates into dollars: about $1.9 billion distributed to roughly 2 million doctors in 2021. Hypochondriac's Guide There is a type of mental illness in which the sufferer believes that their lives are staged reality shows or that they are constantly being watched on cameras. It's called the Truman Show delusion, after the 1998 movie. Observation "Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart." — American humorist Erma Bombeck (1927-1996) Medical History This week in 1902, Harvey Cushing, a pioneer in neurosurgery, performed his first brain operation at the age of 33. Cushing's clinical contributions are profound: the use of x-rays in surgical practice, physiological saline for irrigation during surgery, the discovery of the pituitary as the master hormone gland, founding the clinical specialty of endocrinology, the anesthesia record, the use of blood pressure measurement in surgical practice and the physiological consequences of increased intracranial pressure. Cushing died in 1939 at the age of 70. Med School The Journal of Food Protection recently published a study identifying the places and items in the kitchen that are most likely to harbor illness-causing pathogens. (The kitchen is bacteria's secondmost favorite locale after bathrooms.) Can you rank from most pathogenic to least the kitchen spots and items below? a) Dirty dishes b) Sink sponges c) Spice jars d) Cutting boards e) Refrigerator handles Answer: The big surprise was that spice jars were found to be most cross-contaminated with bacteria, primarily because they are often handled at the same time cooks are working with uncooked meats or other items, without any intervening or subsequent washing. After spice jars came refrigerator handles, cutting boards, sponges and dirty dishes. In all cases, the major problem was a lack of frequent disinfection. Page 6 HAPPENINGS March 02, 2023 www.hap2it.com Samantha Mathis said her character in 12 Desperate Hours, empathized with her captor, but did not condone his crime. The new film premiered last week on Lifetime and is currently available to stream on the Lifetime Roku app and on the Philo streaming app. Denny (Harrison Thomas) breaks into Val's (Mathis) home with a shotgun one morning, so Val agrees to drive him to keep him away from her two sons. "There's the mommy bear in her," Mathis said in a recent phone interview. "She doesn't want him to be naughty, and she's trying to keep him from getting himself into more trouble, but she can feel for him." Ripped from historic headlines 12 Desperate Hours is inspired by a true story that occurred in Washington State in 1963. Ann Rule wrote about Patricia Jean Jaque's ordeal in the eighth volume of her Last Dance, Last Chance and Other True Cases: Crime Files true crime anthology. Gary Lee Quinlivan was the man who took Jaque hostage while on the run for murder. Quinlivan died in 2011, according to records confirmed by Distractify. 12 Desperate Hours updates the story to the present day. Though some dramatic license was taken, Mathis said she was careful not to make Val too nurturing toward Denny because the real Quinlivan was convicted of murder. "I did want to be cautious in our storytelling, for me, in being too empathetic toward Denny," Mathis said. "Ultimately he did do these things." The film shows Denny attempt to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend, Cherie (Tali Rabinowitz). Val witnesses Cherie's mother (Tina Alexis Allen) and Denny's brother (Jesse C. Boyd) verbally abuse him, though they don't know he's holding Val hostage. "[Val] was just this incredible nurturer," Mathis said. "She's trying to stay alive first and foremost, but also to keep him from killing anyone else." Mathis said Val comes to understand how Denny turned to violent crime. "She becomes somewhat compassionate for how he's treated," Mathis said. "There's no compassion for this young man." The challenge for Mathis, she said, was navigating Val's emotional state. She said Val remains terrified during her day driving Denny around, but must keep him calm so he doesn't commit any more violence in a panic. "I was playing with how to remain in tension without conveying tension, which I thought was an interesting challenge as an actor," Mathis said. A history of true stories 12 Desperate Hours is not Mathis' first role ripped from the headlines. On a 2014 Law & Order: SVU episode, she played a character inspired by Mia Farrow, in a story inspired by the allegations against Woody Allen. Mathis also told an inspiring true story in the film Believe in Me. In the 2006 film, Mathis and Jeffrey Donovan played characters based on Jolene and Jim Keith. Keith was the real life coach of an Oklahoma girls' basketball team, and the Keiths were involved with the film. Mathis said 12 Desperate Hours allowed her to take more creative liberties than roles that are more specifically based on real people. "She's more of a quiet type," Mathis said of Val. "She's not an assertive woman in that way. This situation pushes her to some of her limits." '90s movies that live on Mathis made her feature film debut after two years of television work in the 1990 film Pump Up the Volume. She portrayed a high school student who figures out the identity of a provocative ham radio broadcaster (Christian Slater). Pump Up the Volume spoke to teens of a new decade who felt unheard and rebellious against authority. Mathis said she remains proud of the film, and often imagines a sequel revisiting the characters as adults. "I like to muse about what it would be like to look at those two characters 30 years later and see the adults they might have become," Mathis said. "Maybe the child of one of them would have a podcast." Before widespread Internet access, the students in Pump Up the Volume listened to Happy Harry Hard-on's (Slater) broadcasts questioning the authority of their school. Mathis speculated that today, any teens can launch podcasts and connect with others on social media. "What was so powerful about this radio station was how it really brought people together," Mathis said. "Somehow, we just end up more and more isolated from each other with all the social media. That is not what Happy Hard-on was all about." Mathis said she is more surprised how many fans the liveaction Super Mario Bros. still has, noting it is among the most popular films on her resume with fans. The 1993 adaptation of the Nintendo video game starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi. Dennis Hopper played King Koopa and Mathis played Princess Daisy. The film was not a box office success, and Hoskins once called it his worst job, biggest disappointment and the one part of his past he'd change in a 2007 interview with The Guardian. Mathis shared Hoskins' critiques. "Never did I think that what I would consider to be one of the worst movies I ever made would live on as this thing that's near and dear to so many hearts," Mathis said. "It's not the movie we thought we were going to make." Mathis said she has no knowledge about the upcoming animated Super Mario Bros. Movie. but she hopes it represents the game well. "I haven't seen it, don't know anything about it, hope they do it justice," she said.. By Fred Topel Val (Samantha Mathis) stars in the new Lifetime original film "12 Desperate Hours." www.hap2it.com March 02, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 11 Happy and content - It’s a Danish thing While Copenhagen is a thriving metropolis, when you venture out into the Danish countryside, you find yourself saying “cute” more than you know you should. When traveling here, I have a running joke with my guide friends. We say, “Everything’s so…Danish.” Denmark is, simply, cute. Travelers find the society itself is the focus of their “sightseeing.” Poll after poll lists the Danes as some of the most contented and happiest people on the planet. It occurred to me on my last visit that, after a week of travel, I never heard a local person raise their voice. The local Disneyland – Legoland – is a wildly popular place featuring 58 million Lego bricks built into famous landmarks from around the world. (They claim if you lined them all up, the bricks would stretch from here to Italy.) The place is crawling with adorably cute, ice cream-licking, fair-haired children. Kids are holding their mothers’ hands, learning about the Lego buildings or smiling contentedly as they whip around on the carousel. In the middle of the countryside roads are perfectly smooth bike lanes – one for each direction. Even out here, there are more bikes than cars. No one’s uptight. If we get into a little traffic jam, everyone takes it in stride. I’ve been wondering how the Danes pull it off. I think their success relates to handling the “free rider” problem through their social contract. Danes seem to keep in mind the consequences of free riders. (Basically: If I do it, I can get away with it, but if everyone does it, the system will collapse.) They consider what would happen to their society if everyone cheated on this, sued someone for that, took advantage of that technicality, freeloaded here, or ignored a rule there. Europeans trade off “individualism” for “social-ism.” The Danes seem to take it to an extreme. To be honest, I don’t know how well I’d fit in here. But I am intrigued. Danes are famous for not jaywalking. At midnight they still stop for a red light even if there’s no traffic. When I jaywalk anywhere, I do so thinking people will appreciate my lead and follow me. When I jaywalk in Denmark, Danes look at me like I’m a bad influence on the children present. People laugh politely when I ask if they speak English, responding, “Of course I do.” Conversation flows easy. Here are a few comments I’ve heard: – “In Denmark you have to work quite hard to find a crack to fall through. A few people with alcohol problems manage to be homeless. Yes, we are the most contented people.” – “We pay on average 50 percent taxes – yes, worker or big shot, we pay about 50 percent. Of course, we get lots for that. We’ve had national health care since the 1930s. We know nothing else. If I don’t like the shape of my nose, I pay to fix that. But all else is taken care of.” – “All education is free. And university students get a monthly supplement for living expenses for up to six years. When there is a student demonstration, it’s generally for more pocket money.” – “We Danes believe a family’s economic status should have nothing to do with the quality of the health care or the education their children receive. I believe in the U.S. you pay triple per person what we pay for health care. (You pay out of pocket. We pay in taxes.) Your system may be better for business…but not better for service.” In Denmark, things are so costly that it seems people consume more sparingly. The society is designed in a way that encourages people to use less, chew slower, and just sip things. A glass of beer at a restaurant can cost $10. A cup of coffee costs $6 – and free refills are unheard of. I think Danes know they could make more money if they embraced the “big gulp” track and started supersizing things. But the collective decision is not based just on what’s good for the economy. A Costo economy is just not Danish. When I saw a tombstone store with “Tak for Alt” (“thanks for everything”) pre-carved into the stones, I figured it was a message from the dead person after living a very blessed life in Denmark. But I asked a Dane and learned that it means something else. It is a message from the living bidding their loved one farewell (like “rest in peace”). Still, I think when a Dane dies, they (more than their loved ones) should say “Tak for Alt.” By Rick Steves travel Chicago mayor moves to evict homeless sleepers from O'Hare International Airport Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the city is taking steps to remove homeless people who have been sleeping in O'Hare International Airport, calling their presence a risk to security. "We have taken and will continue to take the steps that are necessary to move people out of the airports," Lightfoot told reporters. "We absolutely fundamentally cannot have people sleeping in our airports who are homeless. That is unacceptable," she said. "We are going to continue, within the bounds of the law, to do what is necessary to provide those folks with support but elsewhere. They can't be in our airports." The issue came to the fore when Lopez spoke with Tucker Carlson on a Fox News segment earlier in the week, and by Friday, homeless people sheltering in the airport were mostly gone. Airport cleaning staff told the broadcaster that they had been harassed and made to feel unsafe by some of the homeless who had sheltered at the airport. "Mayor Lightfoot made clear that all City of Chicago agencies must continue to work together and provide services to unsheltered individuals at Chicago's airports," the Chicago Department of Aviation said in a statement. "While it is not illegal to be homeless in this city, it is trespassing to be at O'Hare or Midway without any airport business." The situation has caused backlash from all sides as critics of Lightfoot -- who is currently facing a tough reelection bid -- have said she has not gone far enough to combat homelessness in Chicago, while others demanded more humane treatment for those who had sheltered at the airport. The puppy, dubbed Toast, was found by the Dallas Police Department next to a dumpster. Police weren't sure whether the canine was a domestic dog or a coyote, and Dallas Animal Services said they weren't sure, either. Animal services officials have ordered a DNA test to determine Toast's species. Dallas Animal Services Officer Jacqui Sutherland, who is fostering Toast, said she believes the puppy is likely a domestic dog, possibly an Australian shepherd mix. Remote kissing device lets long-distance lovers share silicon smooches A Chinese company is selling a remote kissing device designed to allow long-distance lovers to share their smooches via a cellphone app. The Remote Kiss device uses a set of silicon lips to replicate the pressure, movement and temperature of a kiss that is then replicated by a corresponding device via a smartphone app. "In my university, I was in a long distance relationship with my girlfriend so we only had contact with each other through the phone. That's where the inspiration of this device originated," Jiang Zhongli, who led the team that created the device, told China's state-run Global Times. The $41 device, available on Chinese shopping site Taobao, also has an option in the app to share kisses with anonymous strangers. Man accidentally buys two lottery tickets, wins two jackpots A Michigan man who accidentally bought two identical tickets for the same Fantasy 5 lottery drawing ended up winning two jackpots -- a total prize of $240,338. The 67-year-old man told Michigan Lottery officials he bought both of his tickets for the Feb. 6 drawing at MichiganLottery.com on different dates. "Every week I purchase a multi-draw Fantasy 5 ticket with the same set of numbers I have been playing for four years," the player said. "I was going out of town, so I bought a muti-draw ticket to cover the drawings while I was gone. There was some overlap on the drawings of the new ticket I had purchased and the multi-draw ticket I had purchased a few days prior." Both of the man's tickets won a $120,169 jackpot in the drawing. The winner said some of his prize money will go toward his son's education and the rest will go into savings. Awaiting prison, Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes gives birth to second child Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has given birth to her second child. Holmes is currently appealing her 11-year prison sentence for fraud. In the latest filing, her attorneys cited her "two very young children" in its latest argument for why she should remain out of prison. "Ms. Holmes has deep ties to the community: She is the mother of two very young children; she has close relationships with family and friends, many of who submitted letters at sentencing vouching for her good character; and she volunteers with a rape crisis and counseling organization," the court filing read. Holmes, 39, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in November. She was the founder of the failed blood-testing startup Theranos, which grew to a peak valuation of $10 billion on the claims that its technology could accurately run many medical tests on a single drop of blood. Holmes was found guilty of making false and misleading statements to investors about developing a device that could run a full range of blood tests with only a finger-prick sample. She was lionized in 2014 as the youngest female self-made billionaire and the next year was named as one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people. That same year the Wall Street Journal published an investigation which revealed that the Edison device did not produce accurate results. She is set to report to prison on April 27. Holmes was questioned as a flight risk in January when she booked a one-way flight to Mexico, but her attorneys maintained that she was only going there to attend a wedding. Holmes gave birth to a son on July 10, 2021, with partner Billy Evans. coast to coast 'The Goldbergs' to end after 10 seasons The '80s are over. You may have known that already but on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, the decade was in full swing. Now the network has announced that the show's tenth season will be its last. A Deadline report suggests that network TV shows will continue to have fewer longterm renewals considering the current state of the business. As The Goldbergs is the longestrunning live-action network TV sitcom, it could be one of the last of a dying breed. The Goldbergs was created by Adam Goldberg, inspired by his own family trying to navigate life in the days of MTV and Reagan. It is narrated by Patton Oswalt and stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, and Hayley Orrantia. George Segal, who played Albert "Pops" Solomon, the family's grandfather, died in 2021 after complications from heart surgery. Former cast member Jeff Garlin, who played the family patriarch Murray Goldberg, exited after numerous allegations of misconduct and was killed off on the show. He denies any wrongdoing and his split from The Goldbergs after nine seasons was said to be a mutual decision, although it was revealed his onset behavior had been investigated for at least three years. "It's been an honor to be part of The Goldbergs for the last decade," McLendon-Covey said in a release." My heart is full...But I definitely hope I never see another pair of shoulder pads for the rest of my life." The series finale airs on May 3. Wendi McLendon-Covey Toast Elizabeth Holmes

www.hap2it.com March 02, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 15 New 'Lord of the Rings' films in development at Warner Bros. NewLord of the Ringsfilms are in the works at Warner Bros. The studio has confirmed that it is developing "multiple" films based on the Lord of the Rings fantasy book series by J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings was previously adapted as a film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and produced by New Line Cinema in the 2000s. Tolkien's The Hobbit was later adapted as a film trilogy in the 2010s. "Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world ofThe Lord of the Ringson the big screen. The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans," Warner Bros. Pictures execs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said in a statement. "But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middleearth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure." The originalLord of the Rings films starred Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin and Cate Blanchett. Tolkien's writings were also recently adapted as the Amazon seriesThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which premiered on Prime Video in September.. As the third Creed and the ninth film in the Rocky franchise, Creed III, in theaters March 3, takes a respectable perspective on its spinoff character. It provides the rousing thrills of the franchise, though wobbles a bit without its driving force, Sylvester Stallone. Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) retires in 2015 after his final fight. Given Creed came out in 2015, that's an odd choice, but so is ending the title character's career in his third movie. Adonis is managing his gym in Los Angeles and training the current champ, Felix Chavez (Jose Benavidez), for a fight against Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), a nice connection to Creed II since Rocky himself is out of the picture. Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors) shows up at the gym, just released from prison after 18 years. Damian is a childhood friend of Adonis', shown in a flashback, and Damian wants a title shot, since he doesn't exactly have time to work his way through the ranks before he's past his prime. Adonis explains why the boxing industry doesn't just give newcomers title shots, no matter how promising. But an emergency setback with Drago leaves an opening. This is an interesting thematic callback to the original Rocky. Adonis knows his late father gave amateur Rocky Balboa a title shot and that's what started this whole thing. Adonis has to learn a lesson Rocky himself learned in later entries, that not every boxer can be Rocky. Rocky had a kind heart. Damian is angry and that doesn't make for an everyman hero. The Apollo/Rocky bout was also a once in a lifetime event that can't be contrived again. That's also a meta way to acknowledge that the original Rocky is a once in a lifetime success story, so Jordan, who also makes his directorial debut, isn't trying to duplicate it. It's Creed III, so it's not a spoiler that Adonis eventually steps back into the ring. It makes sense that Damian is his mess so he's the only one that can clean it up, and both parties happen to be athletes in an industry that provides just such a forum. The film does give Adonis' management life its due. It's mentioned that Adonis has been retired for three years, which would set the film in 2018. That might have been a deliberate choice to set it before the COVID19 pandemic and avoid dealing with those complications. Majors is scary as Damian because he's got nothing to lose. Jordan finds Adonis's vulnerability because he feels so guilty that he had success and Damian did time for their past. Without Stallone in the mix, the melodrama of Creed III is less natural. Stallone had a way of making melodrama organic, but Adonis and Bianca's (Tessa Thompson) marital issues, and Adonis' issues with his mother (Phylicia Rashad) are on the nose and predictable. It is noble to suggest that Adonis is trying to find a way to solve his problems without physically fighting, but also a tad disingenuous. Nobody believes Creed III is going to end with Adonis and Damian talking out their differences. When Stallone made his directorial debut with Rocky II, he evoked the style John G. Avildsen gave the original movie. Jordan evokes Ryan Coogler's first Creed and peppers in his own touches. Creed III offers a healthy mix of remixing franchise formula and charging its own path. It can be a tad blunt, but it has something worthwhile to say. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE REPORT February 24 - 26, 2023 1. Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania (w2) $31.9M 2. Cocaine Bear (w1) $23.2M 3. www.hap2it.com March 02, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 21 WEDNESDAY MARCH 8, 2023 7 p.m. on SYFY Movie: Salt Angelina Jolie plays action heroine again, in a very big way, in this adventure of a CIA operative accused by a defector of being a double agent. She goes on the lam to prove her innocence, as former colleagues pit their skills against hers to try to catch her and bring her in. Director Phillip Noyce includes Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor in his cast — but this clearly is the energetic Jolie’s show. The film airs as part of a marathon honoring International Women’s Day. 7 p.m. on TCM Movie: The French Connection Five Oscars, including best picture, best director (William Friedkin) and best actor (Gene Hackman), went to this high-octane (and largely factbased) 1971 police drama in which narcotics officer “Popeye” Doyle (Hackman) and his partner (Roy Scheider) take on a drug ring shipping heroin into the United States. The film includes one of the most memorable pursuit sequences in screen history. Fernando Rey, who returned with Hackman in a sequel, and Tony Lo Bianco also star. 10 p.m. on SYFY The Twilight Zone Getting what you want might just be the last thing you need. Jasmine’s (Jurnee Smollett) struggling music career takes off overnight after she witnesses a tragic incident, but she soon realizes the relentless recognition comes at a steep cost in the new episode “Ovation.” Can deafening applause drive you to insanity and put your loved ones at risk? Tawny Newsome and Sky Ferreira also star. THURSDAY MARCH 9, 2023 7 p.m. on HBO Movie: Long Shot Jonathan Levine’s 2019 romantic comedy requires a hefty suspension of disbelief, but once you get there, it mostly works thanks to — we’re not making this up — some first-rate chemistry between stars Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. Many years ago, she was his character’s babysitter, but now she’s the current U.S. Secretary of State about to launch a presidential bid. She hires him as her speechwriter, and things develop from there. Andy Serkis, June Diane Raphael (“Grace and Frankie”), Bob Odenkirk and Alexander Skarsgard also star. 7 p.m. on HIST Swamp People The hunt is on, but when Pickle teams up with Jacob she thinks it’s almost like being on vacation. Meanwhile, Ashley sets her sights on monstrous land gators and Daniel decides to gamble on crab traps to lure giants in the new episode “Pickle’s Holiday.” 7 p.m. on TCM Movie: The Pride of the Yankees Gary Cooper gives one of his most memorable performances in this 1942 biodrama as Lou Gehrig, the baseball star whose career was tragically cut short by a debilitating terminal illness. He earned an Oscar nomination — one of 11 that the film received, although it won only one (for editing). Teresa Wright and Walter Brennan also star, and Babe Ruth himself makes an appearance. FRIDAY MARCH 10, 2023 7 p.m. on TBS Movie: Nobody’s Fool Writer-director Tyler Perry’s first Rrated feature, this 2018 romantic comedy stars Tika Sumpter as Danica, a marketing firm employee who is in a relationship with Charlie (Mehcad Brooks), a guy she connected with online a year ago, although the two have never met in real life. Her recently paroled sister, Tanya (Tiffany Haddish), is convinced Danica is being catfished by her internet love, however. Whoopi Goldberg, Omari Hardwick and Amber Riley also star. 8:35 p.m. on SYFY Movie: Men in Black 3 It was a long break between the two sequels, but this 2012 installment of the comedy-fantasy series proves there’s still fun to be mined from the franchise. Much of that is provided by Josh Brolin, in a spot-on imitation of Tommy Lee Jones as they share the role of Agent K at different ages, as Agent J (Will Smith) goes back to the future to alter circumstances that otherwise will lead to his alien-fighting partner’s assassination. Emma Thompson also stars. The film airs as part of a “Saving the Day Time” marathon. 9 p.m. on CBS Blue Bloods After escaping from Mexico’s highest security prison, the head of the deadly La Mano Sangrienta Drug cartel is re-captured and extradited to New York City to stand trial, so Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) teams up with Gates (Lyle Lovett) to deliver El Granjero to the Federal Courthouse. March 2, 2023 through March 8, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): You might feel a real yearning to be pampered and to look forward to enjoyable pastimes and social activities. Set aside time for some self-care. Later, you may be in the mood to cuddle up with someone who tickles your fancy. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): ou could feel you are living out a fantasy if a romantic partner or a loved one indicates that you are especially attractive. Never succumb to an urge to act on your worst instincts; nip these in the bud as the week unfolds. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Think on your feet. You might be quicker on the uptake than usual for the next few days. Since you can work rapidly and accurately, this may be a good time to take the lead on projects that need attention to detail. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Once a clear picture is in your mind, you can enthusiastically work toward manifesting it in the real world. You'll eventually get there if you stay with it, even if you take baby steps. Start the week off with an energetic attitude. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Turn ordinary concepts into something more valuable. This is a week when you may find a new interest or study that can become your personal philosopher’s stone. Don’t let a past problem make you reluctant to try something new. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It is a good idea to read the fine print and analyze things before you make a financial commitment. You may be too interested in getting a good deal and ignore basic problems. Quick thinking is a great asset on any job. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Just wishing upon a star is seldom enough. You may be wrapped up in romantic fantasies now, but later in the week, you might find the real thing. Peer pressure may persuade you to alter or adjust your business habits. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Romantic feelings may arise, but you must remain realistic. Sometimes people appear more talented and honest than they are. You could be hesitant about giving a family member another chance at making amends. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Weigh your choices. Keep on track by listening to your heart and understanding the difference between right and wrong. Your week will go better if you concentrate on fulfilling your promises and commitments. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You may look for ways to whittle down the demands on your wallet in the upcoming week. Pay off some debts and cash in any perks from your credit cards. A loved one might inspire you to be more creative. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Life goes on. Ponder recent events and put them into proper perspective so you can move forward. Follow the rules even if other people want you to bend them. Investing in the best quality can give longer-lasting satisfaction. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Exercise common sense when you can and use intuition when you can't. By the end of the week, your idealism and compassion could impel you to give back to your community. Throw yourself into creative activities.
