Page 4 HAPPENINGS May 25, 2023 www.hap2it.com Zoey 101 and Victorious alum Victoria Justice says she was drawn to the thriller The Tutor because it allowed her to portray a pregnant woman faced with a mystery when she is at her most vulnerable. "I've never played a pregnant character before, and so I loved all the layers that came with it, especially in this genre. The stakes are so high," the actress said in a recent Zoom interview. "She is going through all of this while her hormones are raging and she is emotional. She's very innocent and just loves Ethan and wants to start a life with him and start a family with him." Directed by Jordan Ross and available to stream via video-ondemand platforms, the film casts Tulsa King's Garrett Hedlund, 38, as Ethan, the title character whose world is turned-upside down when his teen client Jackson, a billionaire's disturbed son (Noah Schnapp, 18, from Stranger Things), starts to take a dangerous interest in his personal life. "Annie is a teacher. Ethan is a tutor. We, obviously, are in a place where we have a new child coming and, financially, need all the help we can get," Justice said. "Ethan, being a tutor, gets an offer that he can't refuse from a wealthy student, and then from there it just seems like a normal Tuesday for him, until he meets Jackson, and he's really not just your average student," she added. "Things take a turn and Jackson has a bit of a dark obsession with Ethan." The 30-year-old is a fan of thrillers, so this acting job was an easy sell for her. "There's lots of twists and turns. You never know what's around the corner. Who's innocent? Who's guilty? What's happening? What's the truth?" she said. "It really keeps you at the edge of your seat." As the psychological warfare between Jackson and Ethan escalates, Annie often is the voice of reason. "She is really trying to keep Ethan grounded, keep his head on straight. She's doing her best, but, man, is it challenging," Justice laughed. Ross had a clear vision about how he wanted the action to unfold, presenting a finished product that is visually pleasing with interesting transitions from scene to scene and performances that "hook you in," she added. "He was so collaborative and easy to work with," the actress said of her director. "Being on set with people like that, who are clearly so talented and there for the right reason and just want to work hard and do the best they can and serve the story right was just wonderful. Even though the material was very intense a lot of the time, it really was just a lovely set to work on." The fast nature of the shoot and because most of Justice's scenes were with Hedlund meant she didn't get to impart much professional wisdom to her fellow former child star Schnapp about transitioning from kid parts to more mature roles. "We didn't have a ton of scenes together, but I loved when I was able to work with him and hang out," Justice said. "We didn't talk too much about the child actor aspect of it all. The funny thing is I've actually never seen Stranger Things. I'm probably the only person on the planet who hasn't seen the show." The actress and singer -- whose other credits include Eye Candy, Trust, Fun Size, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Spectacular! -- is looking for projects that challenge her to grow as an artist. "It all comes down to the script. Is the script good? Is the character interesting?" she asked rhetorically. "Who are the people that are attached? I want to work with people who are going to also push me and make me better. At the end of the day, as an actor, I don't just want to play the same things over and over again. I want to mix it up." Meanwhile, she said she continues to feel overwhelmed by the love from her Victorious fandom, even though the sitcom wrapped a decade ago. "I'm so proud of that show and I feel so proud that people love it that much. It's really sweet," she said. "On a daily basis, I will have at least one person come up to me and say: 'You were my childhood!' Or, 'This show helped me get through ....' It's really wonderful to know the show had this impact on people and to this day they still want to watch it. There is a nostalgia factor. It's a really beautiful thing." By Karen Butler Victoria Justice's "The Tutor" is now available on video-on-demand platforms Victoria Justice is drawn to the layers of dark obsession in 'The Tutor' Born February 19, 1993 (age 30) Hollywood, Florida Justice made her acting debut at the age of 10 with a guest appearance on thecomedy dramaseriesGilmore Girls(2003). After landing that role, her family moved to Hollywood, CA so she could pursue a career in acting. She landed small roles and commercials before her breakout role as Lola Martinez on the Nickelodeon comedy-drama “Zoey 101” (2005-08). After “Zoey 101” ended, Justice starred in her own show on Nickelodeon, “Victorious,” where she was able to put her musical talents to use. The premiere debuted to 5.7M viewers. Justice recorded several songs for the series through its four-season run. Her debut single "Gold" was released in 2013. She took a seven-year hiatus from music, making her comeback with the track "Treat Myself", released in December 2020. In October 2016, Justice played Janet Weiss, one of the lead roles in the FOX television adaptation of the musical film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” In her short career, she has received several accolades, including twoYoung Artist Awardsand nominations for threeImagen Awards, anNAACP Image Award, and threeKids' Choice Awards. Justice has taken part in several charity events, supporting charities such as the United Nations Foundation, which benefits numerous causes such as AIDS, Children, Environment, Health, Human Rights and Peace. Page 6 HAPPENINGS May 25, 2023 www.hap2it.com If you’re like most Americans, your image of Spain is actually the region of Andalucía, famous for windswept landscapes, whitewashed hill towns, flamenco, and gazpacho. While visitors gravitate to the region’s big cities of Granada, Sevilla, and Córdoba, Andalucía’s “Route of the White Hill Towns” (Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos) – a charm bracelet of cute villages perched in the sierras – offers a taste of wonderfully untouched Spanish culture. Ronda, 80 miles southeast of Sevilla, is one of the largest of these whitewashed hill towns. It’s also one of the most spectacular, thanks to its gorge-straddling setting. Ronda is easy to visit because it’s one of the few hill towns with a train station. The real joy for travelers lies in exploring the winding back streets and taking in the panoramic views, gleaming white houses, and exuberant flowerpots. Ronda’s stunning ravine divides the town’s labyrinthine Moorish quarter and its newer, noisier, and sprawling Mercadillo quarter. The New Bridge, massive yet graceful, has mightily spanned the gorge since the 18th century. Look down (carefully) into the ravine – it’s 300 feet deep and 200 feet wide. To Spaniards, Ronda is most famous for being the birthplace of modern bullfighting. In the 16th century, two kinds of bullfighting existed: the type with noble knights on horseback, and the coarser, man-versus-beast entertainment for the commoners (with no rules…much like when WWE wrestlers bring out the folding chairs). In the 1700s, Francisco Romero melded these two forms, injected some rules, and created bullfighting as we know it today, complete with scarlet cape (though bulls are actually colorblind – the red was to disguise the blood). Ronda’s bullring (and accompanying museum) rivals Sevilla’s as Spain’s best. Built in 1785, the two-tiered arena is surrounded by 5,000 seats and 136 classy columns to create a kind of 18th-century theater feel. In Ronda, bullfighting is considered an art, not a sport; newspapers cover fights in the culture section, not on the sports pages. Lovers of the “art” of bullfighting will explain that the event is about much more than the actual killing of the bull – it’s about celebrating the noble heritage and the Andalusian horse culture. Ronda is not only about bullfighting. Drop by the Santa Maria church, built on the site of a former mosque and an earlier temple to Julius Caesar, for its interesting mix of Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque fusion (or confusion). For a look at Ronda’s Moorish past, tour the ruins of the Arab Baths, which come to life with a video. The Bandolero museum features bandit lore and paraphernalia from the time Ronda was the romantic home of 19th-century bandoleros – the Jesse Jameses and Billy el Niños of Andalucía. To learn more about the history and prehistory of Ronda, tour the Mondragón Palace. And to travel back 30,000 years, day-trip to the Pileta Cave, the best and most intimate look a tourist can get at prehistoric cave paintings in Spain. The farmer who owns the cave, and whose grandfather discovered it in 1905, still lives down the hill. As you walk the cool half-mile, a guide will point out the faint remains of paintings which are five times as old as the Egyptian pyramids. (Because the number of visitors is strictly limited, the paintings are among the best preserved in the world.) The Neolithic and Paleolithic drawings of black, ochre, and red are mostly just lines or patterns, but there are also horses, goats, cattle, and a rare giant fish, made from a mixture of clay and fat by finger-painting prehistoric hombres. Ronda is fun after dark. While day-trippers from the touristy Costa del Sol clog Ronda’s streets during the day, locals retake the town in the early evening. I enjoy the fine tapas scene. Instead of picking one place, I do a tapa pub crawl, going from bar to bar sampling signature dishes such as lechuguita (a wedge of lettuce with vinegar, garlic, and a secret ingredient), huevo de codorniz (a tiny piece of oily toast with a slice of ham and a fried quail egg), and asparagus on a stick sprinkled with Manchego cheese grated coconutstyle. If a bar has a cardboard sign, “Hay caracoles” in its window, it’s advertising it has fresh snails, a special treat served from late spring through early fall. At tapas bars, you’ll eat standing up, just like the locals. The paseo (early evening stroll) happens in the new town, on Ronda’s major pedestrian and shopping street, Carrera Espinel. Join in. Walking the streets, you feel a strong local pride and a community where everyone seems to know everyone. And you feel thankful that, in your Spanish itinerary, you included Rhonda. www.hap2it.com May 25, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 7 Not So Hard To Swallow Monitoring gastric distress is hard to do and often involves sliding camera-equipped scopes or catheters through the nose to internal places of interest. A new ingestible device may soon hit the market: a camera about the size of a quarter. In tests on pigs, researchers said it delivered location measurements comparable to an X-ray, but without the obvious gagging. There are already "smart pills" on the market that measure things such as pH, pressure, transit time and temperature along the gastrointestinal tract. The new device works by detecting a magnetic field generated by a coil outside the body and could, in principle, allow patients to watch something moving through their bodies in three dimensions. Body of Knowledge Human fingers can feel objects as small as 13 nanometers. Mark Rutland, a professor of surface chemistry, says that means that "if your finger was the size of the Earth, you could feel the difference between houses (and) cars." Get Me That, Stat! A new report in Nature Human Behavior estimates that schoolaged children around the world lost, on average, 35% of an academic year's learning — and still haven't made up for that loss — due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stories for the Waiting Room Most women do not smoke during pregnancy. That's a good thing. Even better, the CDC says the small number who do has shrunk by more than a third. Smoking is a major risk factor for poor pregnancy outcomes and health problems for newborns later in life. Among pregnant women who continued to smoke, the CDC said they tended to be under the age of 30 and live in these 10 states: Arkansas, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming. Observation "Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm." — Steven Wright, American comedian (1955-) Medical History This week in 1987, a patent for "keeping a head alive" was issued to Chet Fleming (U.S. No. 4,666,425). The invention consisted of a cabinet providing physical and biochemical support for an animal's head severed from its body. Oxygenated blood and nutrients would be circulated by means of tubes connected to arteries and veins that emerge from the neck. A series of processing components would remove carbon dioxide and add oxygen to the blood. If desired, waste products and other metabolites could be removed from the blood, and nutrients, therapeutic or experimental drugs, anticoagulants and other substances could be added to the blood. After being thoroughly tested on research animals, Fleming suggested the device might be used on humans suffering from various terminal illnesses. He was clearly a head of his time. www.hap2it.com May 25, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 11 Leave it to Instagram to tell me I do not know how to organize. I’ve always considered myself a tidy person, living, since college, with nary an article of clothing tossed on floors, slung over furniture or hanging from ceiling fans. OK, the fan incident occurred once, but I believe it had something to do with a bet, as in, “I’ll bet you can’t toss your boxers onto the fan while it’s spinning and get them to stay there.” Ah, good old frat days. However, the Instagram algorithm seems to differ. By now it has figured out that, yes, I do travel extensively. In the past month, my Instagram followers have seen me posing happily in far flung locales such as Kotor, Montenegro; Valletta, Malta; Hilo, Hawaii; and Ravenna, Italy. I traversed all of these destinations in one, tightly packed suitcase but made the mistake of, in jest, posting an Instagram photo featuring a tangle of charging cords and adapters. The caption read “The joys of international travel.” That was all Instagram needed to begin pushing a nonstop barrage of ads to my feed for products designed to make my life less cluttered. First up? The Ridge Wallet. Instagram has been showing me these ads for a few years, but they have increased exponentially. Designed, according to its website, to let users “carry less and live more,” Ridge wallets are made from alloys ranging from aluminum to 24-karat gold, the latter for people who apparently have never lost a wallet. The Ridge appears no larger than a credit card but can hold, if you believe the unboxing YouTube video I watched, SIX cards and four bills. “That’s it?” I thought. But What if I Need my My Speedy Rewards Card? My trusty leather wallet currently contains 10 cards. Yes, I could probably transfer my Chicago transit pass to my phone and close one credit card, but I’d feel positively naked without my Costco membership card, my ATM card (for dispensing four bills) and my driver’s license. Do Ridge users not own vehicles? Apparently they never get sick either, because I didn’t see a medical insurance card or COVID19 vaccination card in the mix. Ridge, I love your concept, but I just don’t think my pants pockets are ready for such a minimalist approach. So, let’s move on to the Solgaard Carry-On Closet suitcase, the other product I am now familiar with thanks to Instagram. From the outside, it looks like a regular rollaboard suitcase, the kind preferred by air travelers who refuse to check luggage even if it means every item will emerge from their bags looking as if an elephant had had its way with the contents midflight. Does It Have a Junk Drawer? The Solgaard contains a patented “built-in shelving system,” so, if packed correctly, your items magically appear on shelves that, when unfurled, hang from the case’s handle. The creator, Adrian Solgaard, aka “Adrian the Canadian” to his social media followers, starred in his own YouTube video and promised his invention could hold everything from bulky sweaters to toiletries to charging cords. I could probably squeeze my vaccination card in there or maybe even a Ridge wallet. I’m looking at my upcoming travel schedule, which includes stops in Juneau, Alaska; Phoenix, Arizona; and Fort Myers, Florida. Is it time to abandon my Fossil wallet and American Tourister luggage in favor of the Ridge and the Solgaard? Will doing so allow me to smirk at fellow travelers, knowing the chaos that awaits when they attempt to pay for a dinner check or locate a clean pair of boxers? A pair not hanging from a ceiling fan? I am undergoing a life change and attempting to live a more simple existence, one void of clutter and “stuff.” On the surface, that makes me an ideal candidate for both products. But, as someone who still uses a desk calendar to hand write important appointments, it may take a little more convincing before I make the transition. What I really need is a pair of underwear that folds into a wallet. My Turn with Greg Schwem Instagram will organize my life into a wallet and a carry-on bag Greg Schwem is a husband, father and twenty-year stand-up comedy veteran. Page 12 HAPPENINGS May 25, 2023 www.hap2it.com Spare no expense for dinner tonight What's covered in gold, costs $700, weighs 8 ounces and is edible in Philadelphia? Answer: a hamburger. At the bottom of the main page of the menu at the Drury Beer Garden in Philly is not a cheese stake, but a burger. A very, very expensive burger. For $700, you can get the Gold Standard. That's a Wagyu meat burger with caviar, fresh black truffle, lobster flambeed with cognac, topped with aged Irish cheddar and drizzled with honey. Fries are included. As is a 1-ounce pour of Louis XIII Cognac, which fetches around $5,000 a bottle. "We are excited to provide our guests some amazing, creative and tasty options with our new menu concept," George Tsiouris, a co-owner of the beer garden, told local news. Looking for dessert after you $700 burger? A Japanese ice cream company assembled some of the world's rarest ingredients to create an ice cream flavor that costs $6,696 per serving. Guinness World Records announced Japanese brand Cellato earned the record for the world's most expensive ice cream with its new flavor, dubbed Byakuya. The pricey treat's ingredients include a rare white truffle grown in Alba, Italy, that costs about $6,905 per pound. It also includes Parmigiano Reggiano and sake lees. Cellato said it sought to combine European and Japanese flavors into something unique. "It took us over 1.5 years to develop, with a lot of trials and errors to get the taste right. Achieving a Guinness World Records title made the effort all worth it," a Cellato representative told Guinness World Records. Man wins second $50K scratch in two months A Pennsylvania man whose frequent trips to Maryland have earned him more than $1 million in lottery prizes added another $50,000 to his total from a scratchoff ticket. The 53-year-old Hanover man told officials he bought a $50,000 Cash scratch-off ticket. "I buy a ticket or two at least once a week, either at home or down here. All my lottery luck seems to be in Maryland, however." The ticket ended up being a $50,000 top prize winner. The man, who has collected more than $1 million in prizes from the Maryland lottery, previously won $50,000 from the same $20 scratch-off game just one month earlier. The winner said his latest prize will go into his savings account. Kurt Cobain's smashed, autographed guitar auctions for $595K Someone now owns a damaged guitar that's a piece of rock history and they paid almost $600,000 for it. The broken and reassembled guitar belonged to Kurt Cobain and was signed by members of his '90s grunge band, Nirvana. Cobain died by suicide at age 27 in 1994. Julien's Auctions initially had the guitar listed for $60,000 and was expecting to bring in up to $80,000. The Fender Stratocaster was smashed onstage during the Nirvana Nevermind tour. Cobain was known for smashing guitars onstage during Nirvana's highenergy shows. Cobain gave the instrument to Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan in 1992. Julien's auction description said the guitar shows some damage, including marks of "use and abuse" and chunks missing from the bottom rear. Although the guitar was reassembled, it's not playable. The buyer for the guitar has not been publicly disclosed. Grill smells attract black bear Wildlife officials in Connecticut said a hungry bear attracted by the smell of a recently used grill wandered into a resident's garage. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said a resident contacted authorities when they discovered a black bear inside their garage. "By the time we arrived, the bear had let itself out of a garage without assistance," department spokesman Paul Copleman told WFSB-TV. "It appears that the bear attempted to get to a grill in the garage that had been used earlier in the day." Copleman said officials decided not to take any further action against the bear, as it had not entered the living space of the home. Newly discovered Pompeii victims likely died in earthquake In AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, covered Pompeii in a thick layer of ash and pumice that suffocated many of the city's inhabitants and the city vanished beneath the ash for over a millennium until excavations began in the 17th century. Archeologists have recently discovered two skeletons at the site of the Roman city of Pompeii. "Modern excavation techniques help to shed light on the inferno that over days descended on Pompeii," said Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel, "Using analysis and the latest methodologies, we can gain an insight into the final moments of those who lost their lives." Archeologists said the damage to the skeletons indicate that the men died from injuries sustained during the earthquake that accompanied the eruption. The fact that the men don't appear to have been killed by lava or suffocation, indicate that a significant number of people likely died as a result of the earthquake that preceded the plume of ash and pumice. coast to coast Social media presents mental-health risk for youth, U.S. surgeon general says "There are ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents," U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy wrote in the U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory. A general advisory is a public statement that calls attention to an urgent public health issue and provides recommendations on addressing it. The document is not meant to be exhaustive on the topic, Murthy said, rather it draws on available public evidence. "Nothing's more important to parents than keeping our kids safe. And when it comes to protecting kids' wellbeing on social media, parents need more support," Murthy tweeted following the release of the advisory. In the advisory, Murthy does point to some benefits as a result of social media use, listing self expression and social connections. He also points to a 2019 longitudinal study that concluded adolescents spending more than than three hours per day on social media "faced double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes including symptoms of depression and anxiety." Murthy called the current social media situation a decades-long experiment. "Our children and adolescents don't have the luxury of waiting years until we know the full extent of social media's impact," the Surgeon General wrote in the report. "To date, the burden of protecting youth has fallen predominantly on children, adolescents, and their families." The advisory goes on to list several suggestions for parents, lawmakers and tech companies. Those suggestions include creating so-called "tech free" zones and establishing scientific advisory committees to help craft policy. Kurt Cobain

Page 14 HAPPENINGS May 25, 2023 www.hap2it.com Tony Shalhoub and Kevin Pollak say they suspect starring for five seasons in the Prime Video comedy, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, has changed them forever. Created by Amy ShermanPalladino, the show wraps up its run Friday and the entire series is available on Amazon Prime. Set in the late-1950s, early1960s New York City, the celebrated series follows the adventures of unconventional stand-up comedian Miriam "Midge" Maisel, played by Rachel Brosnahan, and her relentlessly supportive, brutally honest manager, Susie (Alex Borstein). Michael Zegen plays Miriam's philandering ex-husband, Joel, while Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle play her disappointed parents, Abe and Rose. Rounding out the cast are Pollak and Caroline Aaron as Moishe and Shirley, Joel's overprotective parents. "I carry a little bit of all of them along with me," Shalhoub said about the characters he has played over the years. "I kind of hold a place in my heart for them. Abe was superspecial and I've gotten some mementos from the show," he said. "I have those things to hold onto and whenever I feel nostalgic, I can throw on a jacket or a suit and recapture the Abe vibe." Before Maisel, Pollak was known for his stand-up comedy routines and for playing smart, subtle supporting characters in terrific films such as A Few Good Men and The Usual Suspects. "I kind of prided myself on doing nothing," Pollak laughed. "Then to be so much of a blowhard and over the top [in Maisel] for the first time, really, and be rewarded and even have my better half in life say, 'This is the role you were born to play,' it's a double-edged sword," he added. "I wasted so much of my life not mugging and being a scenestealer." Season 4 ended with Moishe in the hospital after suffering a heart attack. "The near-death journey for Moishe certainly kicks off Season 5 and continues that story of what one goes through emotionally and mentally and personally and professionally," Pollak said. Shalhoub thinks Abe is experiencing "a constant rolling time of discovery" through the five seasons of the show. "He realizes [Moishe] is not his nemesis. He's his brother and he is reassessing his role of a father, husband and a math professor, as a man in 1950s, into 1960s," Shalhoub said. "He's a guy who believes he is settled and knows what he knows and then discovers that everything he thought he knew is not really who he is and what is in front of him." Shalhoub said he's is happy with the way the show concludes and thinks the groundwork laid in the first four seasons really pays off in the final episodes. "I think people are going to be really really satisfied," he said. "You always want to leave them wanting more." Pollak praised the show's creators and writers for maintaining the quality of the show over the long run. "Every season, they expand the universe. They understand conflict to drive the story almost better than anyone I've ever worked with," he said. "There is an evolution of all the characters. As much as Moishe wants to stay in one place, this has been an extraordinary journey and I hope that true fans of the show will be rewarded in the so-called final season." The cast and crew felt an acute awareness that something special was ending when they filmed Season 5. "But because we shot from January to November, we also had an awfully long time to embrace, celebrate," Pollak said. "I always felt -- having had a bit of a career prior to the show -- while shooting it that I was finally old enough to truly appreciate a job while I was doing it, as opposed to looking back. I was gifted beyond my hopes and expectations." Shalhoub said he will will miss how the cast members always rehearsed their lines together before the cameras started rolling. "The table reads were awesome, but [I'll miss] just the camaraderie on the set, the connections that we had -- not just the actors with each other, but with the crew, the writers, the design team," he said. "It was a very full, very memorable time period for all of us. It was conflict-free and it was inspiring and it's going to be hard to duplicate that perfect combination." Pollak said he expects the show's legacy will be its contributions to extraordinary storytelling in television. "Every department had true savants," he said. "I am a big TV viewer, a fan. When all the elements come together, it is so, so rare, that it is overwhelming and I hope that's the legacy: that the whole of the show, not just the individual pieces, were exceptional." Shalhoub said he thinks people will always remember and cherish the character of Midge. "This character does the courageous and unexpected thing and is tenacious and unstoppable and has a true original voice and she wants that voice to be heard," he said. "She will not be deterred. She will not be silenced. It's a story about a woman finding her strength and for all women standing up, fighting and demonstrating their strength. That should be the legacy of the show." By Karen Butler Tony Shalhoub, Kevin Pollak say goodbye to their 'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' patriarchs Tony Shalhoub has three Emmy nominations and one win for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Abe Maisel in the Amazon Prime series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Rachel Brosnahan stars as the titular role in the award-winning Amazon Prime series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The series wraps up it’s five season run with a finale dropping on Friday.

"I was excited about that," Galligan said in a recent Zoom interview with reporters. "Even though it means my character Billy Peltzer isn't there, it still means there is a lot of exploration of the mythology that can happen," he said. "That's one of the things that I always thought was perhaps a little underserved in the first two movies. Now available on Max, the 10- episode show is set in 1920s China and follows the adventures of the adorable, magical Mogwai critter Gizmo (AJ LoCascio) and members of the Wing family (Izaac Wang, Ming-Na Wen, James Hong and BD Wong) who adopt him. Wang voices young Sam Wing, who will grow up to be the mysterious shop owner Mr. Wing in Gremlins and its 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. There is some connective tissue between Sam and Billy in that they are both sweet young men from tight-knit families who risk their lives to guard Gizmo, even though nothing could have prepared them for these challenges. Galligan will lend his voice to a new character, whose specific identity and arrival in the story are being kept under wraps until the premiere so as not to spoil the Mogwai viewers' experience. "I would have done practically anything to be part of the franchise. I just think it's a fun thing to do and it's a smart thing to do," Galligan said. Galligan said he wanted to know exactly what the intentions and tone of the series would be before he signed on to it, so he read the scripts for the first five episodes. He liked what he saw. "The series gets a little spooky, a little intense in places," Galligan said. "But that's the franchise. The franchise is not E.T. It's the dark side of E.T. It has a slightly more mischievous, leaning toward vicious streak. Gremlins has always had a mean streak. In Gremlins I and II, the gremlins are tormenting Gizmo like two or three times per movie."

Page 28 HAPPENINGS May 25, 2023 www.hap2it.com May 18, 2023 through May 24, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): An enthusiastic new friend might encourage you to overspend or take unnecessary risks. You could be at odds with someone who may want to take advantage of your honesty or sincerity. Putting on airs can lead to misunderstandings, so remain true to yourself. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Try to keep your attentions focused on purposeful plans. It can be important to surround yourself with positive, encouraging people. Keep an eye on your finances and avoid making large investments or major purchases for now. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You may feel overly sensitive to criticism and could be easily upset by instability. This is not a suitable time to take on new ventures or projects. Take this time to focus on your mental health and find small ways to relieve some of your pressures. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Take your time regarding your finances. If you are in too much of a hurry to make a purchase, you could have regrets later. Be skeptical about possibly risky investments and you will be able to skate past thin fiscal ice. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Boundaries could be put into place and should be respected. Someone may poke holes in possible plans or red tape could prevent you from achieving your objectives. You may find that getting your way might not always lead to contentment. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Let facts be your friend. Obtaining a straight answer from companions may be as difficult as herding cats. You may need to practice more patience and understanding when interacting with ill-tempered people. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Impulsive people may pressure you into making changes to your career, finances or personal life. You may be tempted to take advantage of someone’s loyalty but remember that impulse decisions could lead to issues later on. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Try to find a place to burrow away far from possible noise and distractions. You may need a quiet space to fix problems or address deficiencies. Someone might agree with you on the surface but could be fixated on their own agenda. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): During an internal game of tug of war, either side could end up falling into the mud. You might wrestle with your conscience about trying something new and stimulating when it could be wiser to stick to what is tried and true. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Pump up your persistence and you can prevent getting detoured by possible controversies. This may not be a good time to question the rules or to ignore your responsibilities. Stick to what you know and avoid experimenting for now. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You may be willing to focus on all work and no play. Your ambitions may be at a high point, perhaps because you feel the crunch of having more expenses than income. Follow any rules to avoid possible disapproval. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Having a good relationship with the people you meet could be like petting porcupines. You may need leather gauntlets rather than kid gloves to manage some relationship issues. Maintain a low profile and avoid arguments for now.
