Page 4 HAPPENINGS January 4, 2023 www.hap2it.com Julie McCullough thinks a lot about death – but not in the way most of the rest of us might. “My own death in real life can never be as exciting as it’s been on film,” the actress and comedian tells Happenings. “On screen, I have died by fire. I have died by explosions. I have died by shotgun. Almost everything you can think of – including getting eaten by a shark coming out of a tornado … because that can happen.” Yes, McCullough appeared in the cultural phenomenon that was 2013’s Sharknado. But her acting career started decades before, with memorable turns on TV’s Growing Pains, The Golden Girls and Beverly Hills 90210. She’s continued working on television and in film but is best known these days as a stand-up comic. Those who have seen McCullough in the vast majority of her acting appearances may be surprised by her pronounced Southern accent from the stage, which she jokingly says is because “it’s acting, as in an act.” She got her start in comedy, she says, first through improv but turned to standup after a few years because it was less physically demanding. “I just got to where I wasn't bouncing back physically from that anymore because it was a lot of physical comedy,” she explains. “I thought, ‘I just want to do this on my own.’ I was in my mid-30s, mid-to-late 30s. Now, since I started again, it's been well over 20 years, nonstop.” McCullough works so steadily she celebrated her 50th birthday a few years ago from the stage, at the Comedy Store with fellow comedian Pauly Shore and friend and fellow actress Tia Carrere in attendance. It was a memorable night, she says: “I was going through menopause. When I talk about having hot flashes on stage, it was like a bucket of water poured out of me.” McCullough may be remembered by some as Playboy magazine’s February 1986 Playmate of the Month. Not only is she perfectly comfortable being asked questions about it in interviews, but she also uses the experience in her act. “I make no apologies for my past,” McCullough says, not joking in the slightest. “Everything I've done in my past is between me and my maker. So, I've kind of run with it. I wouldn't recommend it for young people to go out there and just jump in that pool of water. You learn how to swim a little bit, you know, whatever it is you're going to try in your career. It was a short experience for me, not the end at all.” But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t still get some comedic mileage out of her pinup days. “Now I make fun of it on stage,” she says. “A lot of my comedy is about having been a Playboy bunny and a playmate. We're going to enjoy life and move forward and be positive.” In fact, she the last 18 months, she says, McCullough has been appearing in Christian and family films. “Thankfully,” she says, “they're not judging me or throwing boulders at me -- they're hiring me. I've been a Christian. Just because I've been naked in a magazine doesn't mean I'm dealing with the devil, you know. To each their own.” Her acting career has evolved, she says, as she matured. “I'm playing the batty old ladies now,” she says with a chuckle. “I'm playing the old broads who’ve lost their minds. I'm playing the old biddies, the aunties and the grandmas. One of them even with dementia. “That’s Hollywood,” she adds. “If you're in your 50s as a woman they cast you like you're in your 80s and 90s.” With 2024 having kicked off, she says she has a simple goal for the new year. “To live a good life, to encourage others to live their best life,” she says. “Enjoy life. Make somebody smile. When you're walking in a store or down the sidewalk and the first person you come across, give him or her a big smile. “Do your best to be the highlight of their day.” McCullough will bring her show Jan. 12 and 13 to the Kenosha Comedy Club, 5125 6th Ave. Show times are 8 p.m. each night and reserved tickets are $18. Visit hap2it.com for tickets Born January 30, 1965 (age 58) Honolulu, Hawaii When Julie’s mother remarried a Marine, she grew up all over the world, including North Carolina, West Virginia, Florida, Louisiana, Missouri, Texas, Nevada, California, Canada, and Italy. McCullough considers herself a “southern girl” - she attended high school in Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Allen, Texas. In 1983, McCullough graduated from high school in Texas when a photographer approached her to pose in Playboy magazine. She appeared in four issues: February 1985, February 1986, September 1986, and October 1989. McCullough landed the role of Julie Costello on the hit sitcom “Growing Pains” in 1989. She only appeared in eleven episodes until she was fired in 1990. McCullough believes she was fired due to co-star Kirk Cameron’s conversion to evangelical Christianity and her past with Playboy. In a 2012 MySpace post, McCullough said, “He thinks if I read science books that I'm going to hell. [I would] rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints ... the sinners are much more fun. And a lot more interesting than some book-burner who is still having growing pains.” After the Growing Pains scandal, McCullough made several television appearances on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Jake and the Fatman,” “Harry and the Hendersons,” “The Golden Girls,” and “Drexell's Class.” FYI Julie McCullough

Beachgoers are cautioned of the dangers of shark attacks in the area. Warning signs are posted for a mile in both directions from where the man was attacked, from Tavares Bay to Baby Beach. Adding salt to food may increase risk of chronic kidney disease Folks who habitually add an extra sprinkle of salt to their meals are doing no favors for their kidneys, new research confirms. The finding held even after researchers accounted for other health issues, such as being overweight, not exercising or smoking and/or drinking. The bottom line: Compared to folks who never or rarely added salt to their food, people who did so had a higher odds of developing kidney trouble. The risk rose with the frequency at which people said they used table salt. For example, compared to never-users, folks who said they "sometimes" added extra salt had a 4% higher risk of kidney disease; those who "usually" added salt had a 7% higher risk, and those who "always" added salt saw their risk rise by 11%. Those risk estimates came after Qi's team accounted for lifestyle factors that often accompany heavy salt intake -- overweight/obesity, smoking, drinking, lack of exercise, diabetes, hypertension and other issues. There are many physiological issues linking high sodium intake and poorer kidney function, the researchers noted, including hormonal changes and "increased oxidative stress" on the twin organs. "At first, I thought it was fake because my family jokes all the time," the winner said. The ticket turned out to be very real, and the woman visited lottery headquarters to collect her prize. Wallet lost at movie theater found 65 years later Workers remodeling an Atlanta movie theater found something surprising behind a wall: a wallet that had been lost by a patron 65 years earlier. A contractor found the old wallet behind a wall and turned it over to the cinema's owner, Chris Escobar. Escobar said the area where the wallet was found was likely a former lost and found area in a manager's office that had longsince been hidden by renovations. "It was a portal back in time," Escobar told CNN of the wallet. "And then realizing that this has been missing from this family of real people who lived in this neighborhood for 65 years, imagine if we could find them." Escobar did some research online and discovered the wallet's owner, Floy Culbreth, died at age 87 in 2005. But he was able to contact her daughter, Thea Culbreth Chamberlain, 71. Chamberlain was only 6 years old when her mother lost the wallet in 1958. Its contents included old family photos, a library card and raffle tickets. coast to coast CDC reports 251 cases of lead poisoning from fruit puree pouches in 34 states At least 251 cases of lead poisoning linked to tainted fruit puree pouches have now been reported in 34 states. That's up from 205 cases reported in the last weekly tally, the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention noted. Exactly how many cases have been reported in each state is unclear because the CDC has withheld state-specific counts, pointing to patient privacy. The median age for cases in the investigation "is nearly 2 years old," a CDC spokesperson told CBS News, though reports have come in for children as old as 9. Federal officials have urged state health departments to seek out cases of lead poisoning, which could be missed if children who ate the lead-tainted applesauce don't get blood tests from their doctor for the toxic metal. AustroFoods, which makes the now-recalled WanaBana, Weis and Schnucks brand cinnamonflavored applesauce pouches, said it will reimburse customers for up to $150 for lead tests. Meanwhile, the FDA reported earlier this month that cinnamon samples gathered at a facility in Ecuador linked to the tainted fruit puree pouches were found to contain levels of toxic lead that were 2,000 times higher than proposed standards. Earlier this month, a source at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that the cinnamon used in the recalled applesauce may have been deliberately tainted with the toxic element. The applesauce pouches under recall so far are from three brands - Weis, WanaBana and Schnucks. Each is tied to the same manufacturing facility in Ecuador. The FDA has warned families not to eat or serve these products and encourages them to throw out the pouches or return them to the store where they bought them for a refund.

Page 18 HAPPENINGS January 4, 2023 www.hap2it.com Owning a pet may slow rate of cognitive decline Owning a pet may slow the rate of cognitive decline among older adults living alone, new research suggests. Pet ownership was associated with more gradual rates of decline in verbal memory, verbal fluency and composite verbal cognition among the older adults studied, but not among those living with others. The investigators from the School of Public Health at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, used data from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, an ongoing nationally representative sample of community-dwelling adults 50 years old and older in the United Kingdom. They noted that Identifying high-risk populations and modifiable risk factors is essential for establishing public health interventions and promoting healthy aging. Yet, as the authors pointed out, no effective therapy exists to successfully reverse cognitive decline or treat dementia. "As the population ages and life expectancy increases, a major public health issue is the deterioration of cognitive function in older adults," they wrote. "It is estimated that the number of people with dementia worldwide will increase from 57 million in 2019 to 153 million in 2050. "The deterioration of cognitive function not only seriously impairs individuals' well-being, but also brings a huge burden to their caregivers, as well as the financial and health systems of society." The authors noted that their "findings provide innovative insights for developing public health policies to slow cognitive decline in older adults living alone." They noted that randomized clinical trials are still needed to evaluate whether pet ownership slows the rate of cognitive decline in older adults living alone. Their analysis represents one of the largest studies to date examining the association between pet ownership, loneliness and cognitive decline, said Dr. Peter Rabinowitz, a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. "The study provides further evidence for a beneficial impact of pet ownership on mental health," said Rabinowitz, who also directs the Center for One Health Research, which explores the connections between the health of people, animals and environment. "Most of the previous studies have been smaller and crosssectional -- at a single point in time," he said. "This study followed participants for longer than most other studies." The authors also "controlled for other factors such as age and physical health, providing some reassurance that the results showing a benefit of pet ownership were not due to some other difference between people who own pets and those who don't," Rabinowitz said. However, he added that the authors did not differentiate between the ownership of a dog, cat or other animal. And they did not confirm that pets were continuously owned during the follow-up period. Also, Rabinowitz said, they assessed only some aspects of cognitive function, so the same benefit may not extend to other types of cognition. And the population they studied was overwhelmingly white, limiting generalizability to other ethnic groups. Pet ownership also encourages socialization, said Dr. Cari Levy, a geriatrician and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colo. "People come up and say 'Hi'," when they see someone walking a dog. "This [study] makes a lot of sense intuitively," Levy said, adding that "there are certainly very few risks associated with [pet ownership] as long as the person is able to care for the animal." Taking care of a pet can instill a sense of purpose, while also improving mood disorders, which have been linked to cognitive decline, said Dr. Parul Mani Goyal, a geriatrician and associate professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville. "All of this can help with patients' overall health when they are alone -- and might help with their memory," Goyal said. By Susan Kreimer health & wellness TOP RATED DENTIST IN KENOSHA! www.hap2it.com January 4, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 19 Plant-based diets may lower risk of diabetes A healthy plant-based diet can reduce a person's risk of Type 2 diabetes by 24%, a new study has found. Eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains has this protective effect even in people with a genetic predisposition for diabetes or risk factors like obesity, advanced age or lack of physical activity, researchers report. And for the first time, researchers identified specific health improvements from a plantbased diet that would shield a person from obesity, according to their report published in the January issue of the journal Diabetes and Metabolism. These included improved processing of blood sugars, as well as better liver and kidney function, researchers said. That means the protective effects of a plant-based diet go far beyond simply losing weight and dropping fat, researchers said. "Our study is the first to identify biomarkers of central metabolic processes and organ functions as mediators of the health effects of a plant-based diet," said lead researcher Tilman Kühn, a professor of public health nutrition at the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna in Austria. However, researchers noted that there's such a thing as an unhealthy plant-based diet. Those that are still high in sweets, refined grains and sugary drinks are associated with an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, researchers found. For the study, Kuhn and colleagues reviewed data on more than 113,000 participants in a large-scale British observational study, gathered over 12 years. They found that normal values for cholesterol, blood sugar, inflammation, and insulin are associated with a low risk of diabetes. They also found that good liver and kidney function is important in diabetes prevention. "Our research has now shown that a healthy plant-based diet can improve liver and kidney function and thus reduce the risk of diabetes," Kühn said in a university news release. Page 20 HAPPENINGS January 4, 2023 www.hap2it.com The Lousy Traveler Airline agents and other airport workers wryly describe fliers who crowd gates waiting to board as "gate lice," a none-tooappreciative term for an unappreciated behavior. Pushing and squeezing to get on a flight as quickly as possible often results in just making the whole boarding process slower. So why do people do it, especially if they have assigned seats? Psychology experts offer two explanations: conformity and competition. First, humans use other humans as sources of information and behavioral cues. If others are moving, you may think it's time to move too. "People will do any weird thing if they think that's the way to behave," Shira Gabriel, a psychology professor at the University of Buffalo told The Washington Post. "When you see people lining up, getting ready, it makes you feel there's a benefit to that." That's conformity. Competition arises when you see others moving and believe that not doing the same will bring negative consequences, such as losing the last open space in the overhead bins and having to check luggage. Body of Knowledge As you age, your nails change, growing more slowly with nail cells (onychocytes) beginning to accumulate. That's why older people tend to have thicker toenails. Fingernails fare better over time because people tend to take better care of them, while toenails suffer a lot of neglected wear and tear. Also, it's a myth that nails continue to grow after death. Instead, surrounding skin dehydrates and recedes, creating the appearance that nails are growing longer. Best Medicine Q: What is the total surface area of your intestines? A: The small intestines stretch roughly 20 feet; the large intestine is 5 feet long in adults. The total surface or working area of the intestines is approximately equal to the surface area of two tennis courts, though some Swedish scientists have downgraded it to the size of a small studio apartment — an apartment that is dark and uninviting. Page 22 HAPPENINGS January 4, 2023 www.hap2it.com With just two million people, tiny Slovenia is one of Europe’s most overlooked yet unexpectedly delightful destinations. Located where the Germanic, Mediterranean, and Slavic worlds come together, Slovenia has an intimate capital city, eerie caverns, breathtaking mountains, historic villas, and a unique tradition at a lake that prompts grooms to hit the gym and build some muscle. For centuries, Slovenia existed as a backwater of the Germanic world – first as a holding of the Holy Roman Empire, and later of the Habsburg Empire. In the aftermath of World War I, Slovenia became one of six republics that formed Yugoslavia. After helping defeat the Nazis in World War II, Yugoslavia emerged under the leadership of Communist Party president and war hero Josip Broz (known as Tito). In the early 1990s, Yugoslavia broke up into separate countries, and Slovenia became independent. Slovenia’s capital is Ljubljana. With only about a quarter-million people, it feels small for a national capital. Lacking big-league sights, Ljubljana’s the kind of place where the best activities are simply strolling the riverfront promenade and sitting in an outdoor café watching the stylish Slovenes strut their stuff. After being leveled by an earthquake in 1895, Ljubljana was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles that were so popular in Vienna, the empire’s capital at the time. A generation later, architect Jože Plečnik remodeled the city in his distinctive classical-meetsmodern style. Like Gaudí shaped Barcelona and Bernini shaped Rome, Plečnik made Ljubljana what it is today. The Ljubljanica River, lined with cafés, restaurants, and a buzzing outdoor market, bisects the city. The riverfront market is a hive of activity, where big-city Slovenes buy directly from the farmer. And on Fridays, the "Open Kitchen" street-food festival brings out delicately composed dishes from top-name chefs, gutbusting portions of hearty Slovenian grub, and an enticing selection of global cuisines. Spanning the river are several distinctive bridges designed by Plečnik, who walked to work each day and had to live with what he designed. The Triple Bridge is both a popular meeting place and a beloved symbol of the city. The bridge seems almost Venetian: a nod to the city’s unique location – midway between Venice and Vienna, linking the Italian and Germanic worlds. The Cobblers’ Bridge encapsulates Plečnik’s style perhaps better than any other structure: simple, clean lines adorned with classical columns. For a more personal look at the architect, visitors can tour his home, decorated exactly as it was the day Plečnik died in 1957. The house is filled with furniture and bric-a-brac he designed, as well as souvenirs from around the world that inspired him. As you inspect his drawings, equipment, and personal items (including his glasses and the hat that he was famous for wearing), you’ll feel as though Plečnik himself invited you over for dinner. About an hour south of Ljubljana, Slovenia’s Karst region is honeycombed with a vast network of caves and underground rivers. At the Škocjan Caves, visitors tour a series of large caverns, learning how, drip by drip, stalactites grow from spaghetti-thin strands to mighty sequoia-like stone pillars. In the final cavern visitors see, a mighty river crashes below as hikers cross a breathtaking footbridge 150 feet above the torrent. It’s a world where a thousand evil Wizard of Oz monkeys could fly in formation. Equally dramatic are the Julian Alps, arcing along Slovenia’s northern border. Lake Bled, Slovenia’s top alpine resort, is the best home base for exploring this region. It retains an aura of the Romantic Age, complete with a sweeping alpine panorama, fairytale island, cliff-hanging medieval castle, and lakeside promenade. Since the Habsburg days, this is where Slovenes take their guests – whether kings or cousins – to show off the country’s natural wonders. Lake Bled’s iconic island is the focal point of any visit. To reach the island, visitors ride romantic pletna boats, built by hand from a design passed down from father to son for centuries. Ninety-nine steps lead from the island’s dock up to the summit – and the Church of the Assumption. On summer Saturdays, a steady procession of brides and grooms heads for the island. It’s traditional for the groom to carry his bride up the steps to prove himself "fit for marriage" (about four out of five are successful). Handsome villas line the lake, including what was once the vacation getaway of Tito, who huddled here with foreign dignitaries like Indira Gandhi and Nikita Khrushchev. After Tito died in 1980, his villa was converted into a classy hotel, offering guests a James Bond ambience. This fascinating and offbeat corner of Europe is one more example of the Continent’s many hidden charms. With all it has going for it, it’s hard to believe that Slovenia continues to glide beneath most tourists’ radar. By Rick Steves Secret Slovenia travel Ljubljana’s riverfront promenade is lined with quaint boutiques, great restaurants, and cafés ripe for people-watching.

www.hap2it.com January 4, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 23 Billions and John Adams actor Paul Giamatti says he didn't quite know how to feel when he was told that unpopular classics teacher character Paul Hunham in The Holdovers was written specifically for him. Now streaming on Peacock, the film was directed by Alexander Payne from a story he originated and set in 1970 at a New England boarding school. David Hemingson wrote the dramedy, which chronicles what happens when Hunham is stuck on campus for Christmas vacation with Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), a teen student whose mother is on her honeymoon with his stepfather, and Mary Lamb (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), a cafeteria cook whose son was killed in the Vietnam War a few weeks earlier. "It's a mixed blessing. Yes, it is. That's the title of my memoir: Mixed Blessing," Giamatti joked during a recent virtual press conference, referring to how most of the people in the movie dislike Hunham, a by-the-books knowit-all with a lazy eye and medical condition that makes him smell like fish. "The character was fantastic. I would do anything [Payne] wanted me to do, but I thought the story was great, the setting was great, the characters were great. All the characters were great." Giamatti found things to like about Hunham that most people in the character's life didn't appreciate. "I thought he takes a certain delicious pleasure in coming up with the most elaborate insults. It was kind of a certain sort of free song for him that he could put somebody down in such an elaborate way," the actor said. "He's pleased with his own intelligence and playing around with his own intelligence," he said with a laugh. "So, that was very fun." Going into the project, Giamatti understood firsthand the culture of elite education. "There was something so familiar about this stuff. I was excited to do it because I had gone to a prep school," he said. "I didn't board there, so I didn't have that full experience, but I grew up around a lot of people like this. So, it was kind of like, 'Ooh, this'll be fun.' I can just pull on this deep well of all these memories and stuff." Giamatti said he also was happy to reunite with Payne, with whom he collaborated on the classic wine country comedy, Sideways, nearly 20 years ago. "We became friends after Sideways, so it's not like we never saw each other," Giamatti said. "We had ideas for things that never came to fruition. We talked briefly about doing a private investigator thing, which I still want to do," he added. Payne wanted the film to have the sepiasoaked aesthetic of a bygone era and showed numerous old movies like The Graduate, The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Paper Moon, Klute and All The President's Men to his cast, crew and costume, hair, makeup, production department heads for inspiration. "So my behind-the-camera collaborators and I could, without trying to imitate any single one of them, just remind ourselves of the world we would have been splashing around in, had we been working back then," Payne said. The director has always been obsessed with this time period. "I've been trying to make '70s movies, or a modern extension of '70s movies, my whole career," said Payne whose credits also include About Schmidt, The Descendants and Nebraska. "For some reason, once the script was finished, and, of course, we had set it in 1970- 71, and I was preparing to direct it, I just thought, 'Well, wouldn't it be cool to kind of pull off a parlor trick of making it, to some degree, look and sound like a movie made back then?'" The fact that neither Randolph, 37, nor Sessa, 21, was alive in the 1970s became a bit surreal for Giamatti, 56. "It was freaky to be alive and go, 'I'm making a period movie, and I was alive in this period.' So, I'm like, 'Period movie's supposed to be a horse and buggy!' But I was like, 'Not this, which I remember vividly.'" Sessa was appearing in his high school production of Neil Simon's stage comedy, Rumors, when he auditioned to play Angus in The Holdovers. "My theater teacher said, 'Well, these casting people are gonna come, and maybe look for some background people or something,'" Sessa said. "I just thought, 'Maybe if it goes well, I can sit at a desk or something,'" he laughed. "It went, obviously, a little bit better than that. And, yeah, I found myself working with these pretty cool people." Randolph, who is known for her roles in High Fidelity and Only Murders in the Building, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal of a grieving mother spending her first Christmas without her son. In one of the film's most poignant scenes, Angus and Hunhum drive Mary to see her pregnant sister and pass on some cherished baby clothes. "It's just beautiful because you see she's trying. She's trying to move forward. She's trying to accept it," Randolph said. "A lot of times in a family unit when someone passes, if not at the same exact time or shortly before or after, a new baby is brought into their family," she added. "So, you're seeing her trying to get OK with this. And this is a huge deal for her to make this gesture and her sister gets it." Randolph said she believes the tragic-comic, holiday-tinged film -- which at times resembles It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol -- inspires empathy and generosity, reaching audiences at exactly the right time. "What's going on in the world, I think [it] is perfect timing. Being 'giving' time," she said. "We have a lot of holiday movies that are wrapped in a really nice shiny red bow. Or maybe there's like a third act, 'dun, dun, dun' that perfectly ends." Randolph said she sees the project as an "anthem" for people going through tough times during the holiday season. "Can you imagine being depressed and sad and you have to watch, like, Jingle All the Way?" she said. "It's more insult to injury." January 4, 2024 through January 10, 2024 ARIES (March 21-April 19): You might be wishing for a break from all the craziness of the holiday preparations. Take a breath when needed. Now could be a wonderful time to check in with your loved ones and lift a few spirits. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): When people discuss their accomplishments from the previous year, you can share your own highlight reel with friends and family. It might be a fun time to reminisce on your achievements or discuss what might have been. You might find that supporting someone else can be a necessary element to sustaining your own happiness. Now could be a beneficial time to think outside the box. Your creative ideas might be more useful than usual right now. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): There could be a risk of confusion or misunderstandings when it comes to directions or someone’s intentions. A few crossed wires may not dampen your festive spirit. You might need to put money-making ideas aside for now. You may be more likely to stick to a powerful resolution. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Now could be a beneficial time to reassess your goals for your home or family as you look back and take stock of your achievements. A new year’s resolution might revolve around a newfound interest in networking. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You may have a bleak outlook at year-end if you dwell on situations you can’t control. Friends or family could offer you a different viewpoint that can encourage you to make a more optimistic resolution.
