Page 4 HAPPENINGS April 6, 2023 www.hap2it.com The Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! satirizes musicals like Chicago, Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair in its second season. Dove Cameron plays Jenny, a hybrid of characters from Chicago and Cabaret. "She's largely based on Sally Bowles from Cabaret, but there were definite times where there were some Velma [from Chicago] tones and colors," Cameron told UPI in a Zoom interview. "Jenny is a little more self-aware and a little harderedged even than Sally Bowles." In Season 1, Josh (KeeganMichael Key) and Melissa (Cecily Strong) stumble on the town of Schmigadoon, where they get to live out a musical spoof of shows like Brigadoon and Oklahoma! In Season 2, Josh and Melissa go looking for Schmigadoon again, but end up in Schmicago instead. Actors like Cameron, Jane Krakowski and Aaron Tveit, who played characters in Schmigadoon, play new characters and have no memory of their previous roles. "This time around, I got to be this weird version of Pippin, Jesus, Judas and Claude from Hair all rolled into one," Tveit said. "You can go listen to those shows and you really know what you're tasked with to bring to the overall story." In Schmicago, Tveit, 39, plays Topher, the leader of a hippie commune. Krakowski, 54, plays lawyer Bobby Flanagan, a gender-flipped parody of Chicago character Billy Flynn. Krakowski said she was excited to learn Season 2 would parody musicals from the '60s and '70s because they are her favorite decades of Broadway. Giving Krakowski the formerly male lead of Chicago actually fits with the era's feminist slant. "I love how the women were represented," Krakowski said. "I love that they were quirky women who were confident in their sexuality, could sing, could dance, could get the funny line. They weren't the ingenues." Shifting from the Lerner and Loewe/Rodgers and Hammerstein musical style of Season 1 to the Kander and Ebb style of Season 2 drew on the cast members' musical ranges. Cameron, 27, said she has been adapting vocally since shifting from coloratura soprano training to Disney pop music in the Descendents films. "I don't think I really found my own singing voice until a couple of years ago," Cameron said. "For this, it's like a hybrid of jazz, pop and Broadway." Tveit, an opera major at Ithaca College from 2001 to 2005, said opera provides the foundation for all genres, from Grease rock 'n' roll to Les Miserables to Schmigadoon!. "For this specifically, I've never really gotten to do the Jesus Christ Superstar scream singing too much professionally," Tveit said. "I got to tap into something in this show that I've never really gotten to do before." Krakowski got her first screen role as Cousin Eddie's daughter in National Lampoon's Vacation. She performed in Broadway productions of Starlight Express and Grand Hotel in the '80s, and has moved back and forth since. Schmigadoon! combines all of Krakowski's loves and influences. "If people don't know me from the Broadway world, I'm thrilled they'll get to experience a little bit of that here," Krakowksi said. "I'm a real theater nerd and theater lover. I feel like that's my home base." The new setting for Schmigadoon! Season 2 meant different costumes, too. Most of the Schmigadoon citizens wore corseted frocks and knickers. The women of Schmicago wear garters, fishnets and slinky dresses. Cameron said the wardrobe reflected Jenny's freer spirit and sexuality. "I am so uncomfortable in that sort of overly effeminate feminine expression, especially in that era," Cameron said. "Jenny was so free in her body and she was sexier. There was something about it that just felt more liberated." New episodes of Schmigadoon! premiere Wednesdays on Apple TV+. By Fred Topel Born Chloe Celeste Hosterman January 15, 1996 (age 27) Bainbridge Island, Washington After her father died when she was 15, Cameron changed her legal name to Dove in honor of her father who called her by that nickname. Cameron rose to fame for her dual role of the eponymous characters in the Disney Channel comedy “Liv and Maddie” for four seasons 2013 to 2017. She portrayed twin sisters living in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Cameron sang the theme song for “Liv and Maddie” and other songs on the show, leading to her debut single “If Only” in 2015. Superhero fans might recognize her from a recurring role on ABC’s “Agents of SHIELD” as Ruby Hale in 2018. In February 2022, Cameron released her first solo non-soundtrack song “Boyfriend.” The song went viral on Tik Tok and hit #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. 'Chicago' spoof 'Schmigadoon' challenged Dove Cameron & Jane Krakowski Born October 11, 1968 (age 54) Parsippany, New Jersey Krakowski was 14 years old when she played the role of Cousin Vicki on the iconic comedy “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983). Through her teens, Krakowski kept busy on the CBS soap opera “Seach For Tomorrow” with 107 episodes from 1984-1986. In 1997, Krakowski landed one of her first main cast roles as Elaine Vassal on the FOX series “Ally McBeal.” From 2006-2013 she portrayed Jenna Maroney on the NBC sitcom “30 Rock,” and was a main cast member of “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” for four seasons (2015-2020). She also has had a long career on stage from her role as Dinah the Dining Car in “Starlight Express” on Broadway in 1987 to most recently as Mrs. Potts in “Beauty and the Beast” at the Hollywood Bowl in 2018. Page 6 HAPPENINGS April 6, 2023 www.hap2it.com Ramen shop bans customers from using smartphones The owner of a ramen noodle eatery in Japan said he is banning customers from using their phones in order to speed up seating times - - and preserve the integrity of the dish. Kota Kai, owner and operator of Tokyo eatery Debu-chan, said he noticed the customers who waited the longest to dig into the bowls of ramen noodles placed in front of them tended to be watching YouTube videos on their phones. Kai said he was concerned not only about customers tying up valuable seating space during peak hours, but about the way thin Hakata ramen noodles stretch out and are ruined after too many minutes in the soup. The restaurant owner first pitched the idea of a smartphone ban on Twitter, and positive responses led to his enacting the policy. Kai said he is not posting any signs about the phone ban, but he has started speaking to customers individually about keeping their phones put away during mealtime. Surprises unearthed in 90-year-old San Francisco time capsule A time capsule buried on San Francisco's highest peak was unearthed and opened 90 years later -- and the box turned out to contain dozens of surprises. Mayor London Breed and about 250 other spectators attended the event, which saw the San Francisco Historical Society examining the contents of the time capsule removed after 90 years from its concrete bed at the 103-foot Mount Davidson Cross. The historical society said news reports from 1933 listed only a small handful of items inside the box, including water from the River Jordan, rocks from the Garden of Gethsamane in Jerusalem, local newspapers and city directories. Officials opened the copper box with a power tool and were surprised to discover more than 30 items, including a preserved olive branch from Jerusalem and a 1933 Bay Area phone book. Officials said all of the items were remarkably wellpreserved. The San Francisco Historical Society said the items from the capsule will eventually go on display in its museum. The group said a new time capsule will be buried in the same spot. Half of U.S. drivers often use cellphones while driving Texting and driving can be deadly. Holding your phone in your hand to talk and surfing the Internet while behind the wheel is dangerous, too. This is widely known, but a new survey finds that about half of all respondents still use an electronic device most or every time they drive. "I think the results from this study really help shed some light on the reasons why" people are still using their phones in their cars, said lead author Aimee Cox, a research associate with the IIHS. Cox said that appears to include "the need or the perceived need to respond to family or friends, the need for information, all these things that modern cellphones have really allowed us to do without thinking about it." While distracted drivers are using their phones while driving because they don't want to miss a call from their kids, for example, it's also their family members who they say could motivate them to put the phones down. Distracted drivers killed at least 3,000 people in 2020, according to a statement issued by GHSA. That was 8% of all traffic deaths. Another 400,000 people are injured each year, but it may very well be higher, because it can be hard to prove that distracted driving caused a crash. Virgin Orbit files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Satellite launch provider Virgin Orbit announced that it has filed for Chapter 11 protection as it looks to sell the business. "While we have taken great efforts to address our financial position and secure additional financing, we ultimately must do what is best for the business," Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart said in a statement. "We believe that the cutting-edge launch technology that this team has created will have wide appeal to buyers as we continue in the process to sell the company. "At this stage, we believe that the Chapter 11 process represents the best path forward to identify and finalize an efficient and valuemaximizing sale." Founded by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson in 2017, Virgin Orbit began commercial operation in 2021, launching a total of 33 satellites into orbit. Reese Witherspoon files for divorce after Jim Toth split Reese Witherspoon has officially filed for divorce from her husband, Jim Toth after nearly 12 years of marriage. The actress cited "irreconcilable differences" for the split and listed the filing date as their date of separation. In addition, Witherspoon said she and Toth have a pre-nuptial agreement in place. She requested joint custody of their 10-year-old son, Tennessee. Witherspoon announced her split from Toth in an Instagram post March 24, just two days before their 12th wedding anniversary. Witherspoon was previously married to Ryan Phillippe and has two children, daughter Ava, 23, and son Deacon, 19, with the actor. The actress was recently spotted without her wedding ring following news of her split. coast to coast UFC and WWE announce merger creating $21B company The UFC and WWE will merge, creating a new $21B sports and entertainment company. Page 8 HAPPENINGS April 6, 2023 www.hap2it.com Born April 15, 1982 (age 40) Vancouver, British Columbia As a kid, Rogen dreamt of being a stand-up comic, performing at his summer camps. His early comedy routines involved jokes about his bar mitzvah, his grandparents, and camp counselors. At the age of 13, he and childhood friend Evan Goldberg wrote a rough draft of what would be the 2007 film “Superbad.” At the age of 16, Rogen attended a local casting call for the Judd Apatow show “Freaks and Geeks.” Rogen dropped out of high school to star in the new ABC series “Freaks and Geeks.” The show only lasted one season, but has evolved into cult status, launching the careers of Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segal, and Linda Cardellini. Rogen’s breakthrough role came when he was cast in the lead in the Judd Apatow film “Knocked Up” (2007). Rogen was reunited with “Freaks and Geeks” co-star James Franco in the Apatow-produced 2008 comedy “Pineapple Express,” where Rogen also served as writer. In 2014, Rogen and pal Goldberg stirred some controversy with the film “The Interview.” The film stars Rogen and Franco as journalists who set up an interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and are then recruited by the CIA to assassinate him. Threats led to a three-month delay in the release to re-edit the film and led to major theater chains to opt to not show the film due to terrorist threats. In a pre-COVID act that seems normal now, “The Interview” was released for online digital rental just a few weeks after its theatrical premiere. Rogen has been happily married to writer and actress Lauren Miller since 2011. The two have stated they do not plan to have children. FYI Seth Rogen Seth Rogen said he agreed to voice Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, in theaters April 5, because he couldn't bear the thought of anyone else playing the part. "The lens I put my creative choices through is: Would I be jealous if I saw this movie came out and I wasn't a part of it?" Rogen said in a Zoom interview. "I would maybe feel jealous of whoever else got to do it." Donkey Kong is the gorilla in the video game of the same name that introduced Mario. Then, Mario got his own spin-off, Mario Bros., which led to the game Super Mario Bros. The animated movie adapts Super Mario Bros., but incorporates several Nintendo games like Mario Kart. Mario (voice of Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) fall through a pipe under Brooklyn and enter the Mushroom Kingdom and Dark Lands from the game. Mario also visits the Jungle Kingdom and has to team up with Donkey Kong and his army to help rescue Luigi from Bowser (Jack Black). Rogen, 40, said he improvised a lot of Donkey Kong's jokes about Mario's height and facial hair. "If you're a short guy with a mustache, I apologize in advance," Rogen said. "I throw some zingers your way." Rogen said he grew up playing Donkey Kong on a Commodore Amiga 3000 computer. Then he discovered Mario Bros. in an arcade, and got a Nintendo Entertainment System in the '80s, which had both Mario Bros. and Super Mario. Though Mario and Donkey Kong were nemeses in many games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie finds common ground between them. Both Mario and Donkey Kong struggle to live up to their fathers' expectations. Rogen called that a "time-tested formula." "Any time there's parallels between characters who have conflict, that's always a good thing in movies," Rogen said. In live-action, Rogen's movies like Knocked Up, Superbad, Pineapple Express or the Neighbors films tend to have R ratings. Even PG-13 at the tamest, Rogen's live-action films are not intended for kids. Rogen said animated films challenge him to adapt his comedy to family audiences. "I don't know if I will ever make live-action movies for children necessarily," Rogen said. "With animation, and especially some of these types of kids movies, it is a fun way to try to deliver on the comedy that I normally enjoy doing - but for everybody." Rogen got his first voiceover movie role as a ship captain in Shrek the Third. Dreamworks hired him again to voice Mantis in the Kung Fu Panda movies and play the lead monster, B.O.B., in Monsters vs. Aliens. Rogen also voiced the warthog Pumbaa in the computer-animated remake of The Lion King. But, the animated movie Rogen wrote and produced, Sausage Party, was Rrated. Sausage Party made $140 million worldwide, proving to Rogen that animation is not just for kids. "Maybe studios viewed [animated movies] as this kid thing, but the average moviegoer did not," Rogen said. "They were thrilled to have different versions of it." It was a sentiment echoed by Guillermo del Toro as he collected awards for his Netflix animated Pinocchio movie this year. Del Toro used his speeches to remind people in Hollywood that animation is not only for children. Rogen has another animated movie out this summer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which falls somewhere in between PG family fare and his brand of hard R comedy. Based on the Eastman and Laird comic book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adaptations have included a weekday afternoon animated show, liveaction movies, animated movies and a touring stage show. Rogen said his Turtles movie, which he also produced, represents "a very different tone, a very different style" of animation. "It really shows how different animated movies can be, even if they are both for families," Rogen said. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem opens Aug. 4 in theaters. By Fred Topel Seth Rogen 'would be jealous' if someone else played Donkey Kong Seth Rogen voices Donkey Kong in "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."

But vaping, like tobacco use, is also linked to oral health. Vaping has been tied to bleeding after brushing and possibly worse. Researchers say it's hard to differentiate because many vapers are former cigarette smokers who had already upped their risk for precancerous oral lesions, bone loss around teeth and gum disease. Device Delay Many parents these days will quickly resort to giving their young child a smartphone or tablet to defuse a tantrum or produce a moment of quiet. But a new study suggests that might not be such a good idea in the longer term. Study authors found that children who were given the devices, often early in life to calm them down, often had trouble later learning how to regulate their emotions on their own. Get Me That, Stat! A recent survey by the University of Michigan Health found that 1 in 3 parents would give their children fever-reducing medication for spiked temperatures below 100.4 F, even though doctors typically recommend such medications only at higher temperatures or to ease obvious discomfort. Body of Knowledge By age 60, 60% of men and 40% of women will snore. Normal snoring averages around 60 decibels, about the noise level of normal speech. Intense snoring can exceed 80 decibels, the approximate level caused by a jackhammer breaking up concrete. Best Medicine A woman is about to give birth. Doctor: "I'm going to deliver the baby." Woman: "Actually, we'd like the baby to keep his liver." Observation "If you want to know the correct way to perform an exercise, the answer is: whatever hurts most." — Jason Love Medical History This week in 1866, the first civilian ambulance services debuted in Cincinnati and New York City. The U.S. Army had begun such service one year earlier. Sum Body Eight facts about insomnia: No. 1: There's more than one type. No. 2: Symptoms can go beyond just having trouble falling asleep, such as irritability, anxiety and forgetfulness. No. 3: Some insomnia causes are habit-related, such as drinking caffeinated beverages too late in the day or staring at your cellphone in bed. No. 4: Fatal familial insomnia is a rare degenerative brain disorder that causes increasingly extended bouts of sleeplessness. Patients usually die between six months and three years after onset. No. 5: Prescription sleeping aids like Lunesta and Ambien or overthe-counter supplements like melatonin are not the only treatments. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia involves training the mind and body to engage in good sleep habits. No. 6: Ancient Romans believed rubbing dormouse fat on your feet could help you sleep. Later, Renaissance mathematician Gerolamo Cardano advised rubbing one's teeth with dog earwax. No. 7: Occasionally, people claim to be able to get by with little or no sleep with no ill effects. Perhaps, but the CDC recommends 14-17 hours per day for newborns up to three months; 10-13 hours for infants, toddlers and young children; 8-10 for teens; 7-9 for adults, and 7-8 for older adults. Smith was sitting in the front passenger seat of his vehicle when the dog "stepped on the rifle," according to a Sumner County Sheriff's Office report, which pulled the trigger and shot Smith. Authorities deemed the shooting an accident; the dog was not charged. By Scott LaFee, Creators well news

Page 12 HAPPENINGS April 6, 2023 www.hap2it.com For a perfect honeymoon destination, experience modern Germany in Frankfurt Cosmopolitan Frankfurt, while low on Old World charm, offers a good look at today’s no-nonsense, modern Germany. If you’re a budget traveler, you’ll likely fly into or out of this major hub for discount airlines. With its forest of skyscrapers perched on the banks of the Main River, Frankfurt has been dubbed Germany’s “Mainhattan.” It’s also known as “Bankfurt.” Its banking district includes the twin towers of Deutsche Bank, the Eurotower (home of the European Central Bank), and the headquarters of Commerzbank, designed by Norman Foster (of Berlin Reichstag fame). This 985-foot skyscraper has nine winter gardens spiraling up its core and windows that actually open. It’s considered the first ecological skyscraper — radically "green" when it opened in 1997. If you arrive in Frankfurt by train, you won’t be impressed. The area near the station is seedy. But the Metro quickly whisks you to top museums and charming squares. In the 1980s, Frankfurt decided that it wanted to buck its “Bankfurt” image. It went on a culture kick and devoted 11 percent of the city budget to the arts and culture. The result: Frankfurt has become a city of art. Nine museums in striking buildings line the Main River — including museums on architecture, film, world cultures, and the great European masters. Many of the city’s historic sights are clustered around Romerberg, the main square. The City Hall houses the Imperial Hall, where Holy Roman Emperors celebrated their coronations. The cute row of halftimbered houses (rebuilt in 1983) opposite City Hall is typical of Frankfurt’s quaint old center before the square was destroyed in World War II. From Christmas markets to violent demonstrations, this square is the heart of Frankfurt. Saalgasse, literally “long hall street,” just off the main square, offers a perspective on pre-WWII Frankfurt. In the 1990s, famous architects from around the world were each given a ruined house on this street and asked to design a new building to reflect the structure that stood there before the war. The result is a lane of postmodern buildings that echo their higgledy-piggledy predecessors. Frankfurt, the birthplace of Anne Frank, had a thriving Jewish population until the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s. The city is also the hometown of the wealthy Rothschild family. Born in the Frankfurt ghetto in 1744, Mayer Rothschild went from being a pauper to the richest banker in the world. His five sons set up business in Rome, London, Paris, and Vienna, and in two generations the Rothschild banking dynasty was established. For more on Frankfurt’s Jewish population, visit the city’s fascinating Jewish Museum, housed in the former Rothschild Palace, and Museum Judengasse, in the former Jewish Ghetto. When you’re done sightseeing and ready to unwind, go to Frankfurt’s apple-wine pub district. The cobbled, cozy Sachsenhausen neighborhood is both a well-heeled residential area and an eating-and-drinking zone, enjoyed by tourists and Frankfurters alike. More than a hundred characteristic apple-wine pubs have taken root here (alongside plenty of other options). Apfelwein, drunk around here since Charlemagne’s time 1,200 years ago, became more popular in the 16th century, when local grapes suffered from disease. Apple wine is about the strength of beer (5.5 percent alcohol), and is served spiced and warm in winter, cold in summer. To complement your traditional drink with a traditional meal, order Frankfurt sausage or pork chops and kraut. From the seedy to the sublime, from Goethe to apple wine, even two or three hours in Frankfurt leaves you with some powerful impressions. You’ll have seen 21st-century Germany, beyond the country’s cliches of old castles and cute, cobbled squares. For years, Frankfurt was a city to avoid…but today, its energy makes it worth a look. By Rick Steves World's largest wearable cake dress unveiled at Swiss expo A Swiss baker earned a Guinness World Record at a wedding fair by creating the world's largest wearable dress made out of cake. Guinness World Records announced Natasha Coline Kim fah Lee Fokas of the SweetyCakes GmbH bakery created the dress for the Swiss Wedding World expo in Bern. The dress, which weighs 289 pounds and 13 ounces, was certified as the world's largest wearable cake dress (supported) by the record-keeping organization. Newlyweds, wedding party rescued from elevator A pair of North Carolina newlyweds and members of their wedding party have a memorable story to tell after they had to be rescued from a hotel elevator. Panav and Victoria Jha said they were celebrating after their ceremony when their elevator at the hotel stopped between floors. "We go up maybe five feet and then just stopped," Panav Jha told WBTV. "The door was slightly ajar, so I was like, 'Hmm, that's not normal.'" The Charlotte Fire Department responded to the scene and soon discovered the situation was different from their usual elevator rescue calls. The firefighters lowered a rope from the next floor up and had to rescue the bride, groom and wedding party one at a time. "We put them in what's called a hasty seat. It's just a simple seat that hooks around them and we hook them up to our rope rigging system," firefighter Michael Claycomb said. " The couple said they were freed from the elevator after about 2 1/2 hours. "It was wild, but a crazy, fun, memorable experience that's one for the books," Victoria Jha said.

Page 14 HAPPENINGS April 6, 2023 www.hap2it.com Let The Fun Begin! Receptions used to be the place where guests mingled among food and friends and danced the night away before seeing the bride and groom off on their honeymoon. While great for guests who liked to dance, receptions did not offer guests who would rather not dance much to do other than to sit around and chat. If you were seated next to someone you knew, great. If not, you better prepare for a lot of small talk. But, now things are changing. Today many brides and grooms offer a variety of activities in addition to dancing to bring guests together and keep them entertained. Couples are recognizing that guests may not know each other and are incorporating ice breakers into their receptions. These can run the gamut from mad libs to trivia quizzes to story time. Instead of making small talk about the flower arrangements, for example, guests can get to know each other as they reflect on an episode in their life in the year the penny next to their plate was made. Once the ice is broken, couples can keep the fun going with games that everyone can play. Bingo, garter relays, musical chairs, scavenger hunts and trivia quizzes are all games that can build camaraderie and keep guests entertained. In addition to helping guests get to know each other through group activities, couples are also recognizing the need for individual activities other than dancing. They are setting up tables for guests to play cards and board games and TVs and game consoles for guests to play video games. They are bringing out the basketballs, lawn darts and croquet sets for guests who like to be outdoors. With more to do, many guests are staying longer, making all of the time and money spent in planning the wedding more worthwhile. While some couples opt for the traditional reception dinner and dancing, others are going for a more laidback atmosphere, providing a wide range of activities for guests to take part in. The choice is yours. You can throw in some ice breakers amid dinner and dancing, or you can go all out and provide games and activities from beginning to end. Consider the needs of your guests and plan accordingly. your bridal guide Flower Girl Alternatives Some brides simply cannot envision their walk down the aisle without a little girl dressed to the nines strewing rose petals before them. They bestow the honor on a young friend or family member, and more often than not, it goes well. Other brides are not keen on the idea of having children in their wedding or have no real good candidates to serve as their flower girl. Lucky for them, there are other options. A well-trained pet can make a great flower girl, or ringbearer, for that matter. Who wouldn’t enjoy the sight of a bride’s beloved Pomeranian pup walking down the aisle in a lacy floral collar? No petals would be strewn, but for venues that do not allow the practice, having a pet for a flower girl might be ideal. Exotic pets may serve as flower girls as well, providing they can be escorted, carried or rolled down the aisle. For pets willing to be dressed up, there are dozens of formalwear styles available from dresses and tuxedos to hats, veils and dressy collars and leashes. Performers are another option. Brides interested in making a spectacular entrance can hire a juggler, acrobat, clown, etc. to serve as their flower girl. Who wouldn’t enjoy receiving a rose from a ballet dancer pirouetting down the aisle or a daisy pulled from a magician’s hat? Flower girl performers work rather well for themed weddings, especially in venues that do not permit petals to be thrown. Guests may also serve as flower girls. Baskets or bags of flower petals can be placed randomly among the seating, attached to the ends of pews or handed out at the guestbook. Whatever the method of delivery, guests will have access to flower petals to scatter down the aisle. For venues that do not allow petals to be strewn, guests may blow bubbles, ring miniature bells or sing softly. Brides just need to make sure they note in the program what guests are to do with the items provided. Brides who have too many people to choose from may want to select a group of kids to walk down the aisle in place of a flower girl or ringbearer. Who wouldn’t take great delight in a 10-year-old pulling a small red wagon with his two younger sisters in it? Small children’s choirs or junior bridesmaids are other options. These are just some of the alternatives to the flower girl tradition. With some thought, brides are sure to come up with ideas of their own. By Tresa Erickson

Will You? You got engaged a few months ago, and the wedding planning is underway. You’ve set the date, booked the venue and now you’re ready to select the wedding party. You know without a doubt whom you want to be your maid of honor and best man. The rest of your wedding party, well, the choices are not nearly so clear. Before you do anything, make certain the people you have in mind for your maid of honor and best man are on board. Once your maid of honor and best man have said yes, you can focus on the rest of your wedding party. Draw up a list of the positions you would like to fill and the people you would like to see in them. Be realistic in your assessment. Don’t expect your young, super-shy cousin Megan to be a good candidate for a bridesmaid. That role might better be served by Megan’s older, more outgoing sister Amy. Determine the best people for the jobs and have a backup list just in case. Just because Amy wants to be in your wedding doesn’t mean she will be able to. She could very well have a business trip planned on the day of your wedding. When you have a list of potential candidates, it’s time to ask them. That’s right. You need to ask. Don’t assume your nephew will be your ringbearer. You can make a request in any number of ways. You can send out a formal invitation, you can call or stop by, or you can invite everyone over to your home for a little get-together. Fire up the grill, make a spread, announce your wedding date and ask those in attendance to be in your wedding. With small kids, you might want to speak to their parents beforehand. Be prepared for some declines. Some may say yes, some may hesitate and tell you later, and some may just flat out tell you no. Don’t take it personally. They may have something else to do or just not be interested. Tell them thanks anyway and take a look at your backup list. Selecting the right people to be in your wedding takes time. Don’t rush it. Consider all of the options carefully and be prepared for some people to say no. By Tresa Erickson your bridal guide Page 16 HAPPENINGS April 6, 2023 www.hap2it.com $ 1595 011923 011923

www.hap2it.com April 6, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 27 April 6, 2023 through April 12, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19):When your bills are paid, you may feel free to make extravagant purchases, but it might be best to save up for items of higher quality. Capitalize on your good reputation to make forward progress but be careful not to overstep others' boundaries. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Enjoy an active social life while simultaneously focusing on achieving your fiscal dreams. You can find others may want to bring you back to reality so it would be best to keep large scale dreams or plans close to your chest for now. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Ideas that may have seemed feasible a few days ago could have more complications than expected. You might have more on your plate: look at plans with a more discerning eye. Taking a step back can help you reflect and find the best route. CANCER (June 21-July 22): An optimistic and enthusiastic mood can make anything seem possible. Review all the minute details with a partner or loved one and plan things carefully. This is not the time to trust in luck if you hope that important matters will succeed. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Appearances count so give your look a second glance. When you find yourself with a financial surplus, you could feel an impulse to spend. If you make a less sensible financial decision, think through a way you’ll be able to quickly recover. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Whenever you speak from the heart, you cannot go wrong. You might have insights to share that no one else has considered. Be sensitive to the opinions of other people even if they seem much too demanding or pessimistic. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Extra sympathy and understanding may be needed to keep things running smoothly. Do not forget to offer encouragement and to explain your plans in detail. Offering unconditional love and consistent displays of affection can help turn the tide. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Strategize ways you can turn your good reputation into greater financial rewards. If you are willing to work hard, you can impress people with your integrity and may find making money can be a rewarding pastime. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Keep your ear to the ground. Someone might give you valuable input on how to enhance your public image or ideas to use to upgrade your reputation. Other people may inadvertently reveal their strategies and confidential information. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Address potential security issues that could impact your finances so you are not vulnerable to unwanted intrusions. This is not the time to borrow on credit or go on a spending spree that can create extra financial obligations. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Use more gentle methods instead of force. Inquiring minds are curious and want to know more. You may feel it necessary to ask more probing questions, but someone could feel you are asking for intel that is none of your business. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Any unintentional evasiveness or refusal to be pinned down could be counterintuitive when business tactics are being discussed. You may spread yourself too thin when you would be better off spreading your enthusiasm on thick. "We're always trying to find some kind of thread of continuity, even when things are changing," she said. "Knowing we're going to go into the 10th anniversary of The Bones of What You Believe later in this year, we thought maybe it's time to move back to a more graphic universe so that this miniature chapter can lead into that chapter." I've just had two biopsies done. I just went to my doctor ... and she just saw the little things could be or could not be basal cell, in her opinion. She doesn't know. However, if I can just take this opportunity to remind you summer is coming for those of us here in the northern hemisphere, please wear sunscreen. It is just not worth it. The language platform Duolingo and streaming service Peacock joined forces last weekend for a 90-second trailer for an outrageous - but fake - reality dating show in which none of the contestants speak the same language. The trailer was released just in time for April Fool’s Day last Saturday.
