Page 4 HAPPENINGS January 1, 2026 www.hap2it.comRob Reiner directed great comedies. He was also a voice for social justice. When the news brokeabout the deaths of RobReiner and his wife,Michele, the outpouring ofgrief from the Hollywoodcommunity and beyondwas instantaneous andoverwhelming. But thegrief was of a kind notusually associated with thepassing of even the biggestmovie icons. When amajor star or filmmakerdies, we as moviegoersmay feel the loss in waysthat seem weirdlypersonal. We didn’t knowRobert Redford, forexample, or RobinWilliams, and yet we feltas though we did becauseof their larger-than-lifepresence on the screen. Wefelt close to them becauseof what their movies meantto us.In the case of Reiner, however, the closeness somany felt had an addeddimension. It was not onlythe moments in his bestmovies – films like “ThisIs Spinal Tap,” “ThePrincess Bride,” and“When Harry Met Sally” –that resonated deeply withaudiences. It was also therecognition for many of usthat the man behind thosemovies was a crusader fordecency in the publicsphere. He wasn’t just amovie icon; he was aliberal icon for socialjustice. The decency reflected inhis films – the way thepeople in his movies, evenat their worst, are notdismissively portrayed –was equally present in hispublic works. It wouldhave been natural for him, especially when hisdirecting career was on thewane, to run for politicaloffice in California. Afterall, ArnoldSchwarzenegger did it.Reiner declined to do that.“I don’t want to be anelected official,” he oncesaid. “I want to get thingsdone.”I met Reiner only once, more than two decadesago. I was hosting a movieseries in Los Angeleswhere famous filmmakerswere invited to discusstheir favorite film, followed by a screening ofthe movie. It’s alwaysdicey when critics meetfilmmakers. You neverknow when the memory ofsome long-ago negativereview is going tosuddenly pop into theconversation and roil thewaters. But Reiner wascordial enough andaccommodating, and I feltat ease. I imagine this ishow he worked withactors, too, and how hewas able to elicit so manymemorable performances. And what was his favoritefilm? “On the Waterfront,”the 1954 Elia Kazanclassic about New Jerseydockyard corruptionstarring Marlon Brando. To those who only knewReiner from his longrunning role as ArchieBunker’s beleaguered sonin-law, Michael“Meathead” Stivic, in the“All in the Family” TVseries, this might haveseemed an odd choice. Butit fit perfectly with hissense of justice, of doingthe right thing.Reiner sometimesbemoaned the fact that, despite his vastaccomplishments, he wasstill thought of, especiallyby an older generation, asMeathead. He once said: “Icould win the Nobel Prize, and they’d write‘Meathead wins the NobelPrize.’” But his sense ofhumor, his welcomingacceptance of life’sabsurdities, was equally afixture of who he was.How could it not be?Growing up as the son ofCarl Reiner, a bona fidecomic genius, was, by theson’s own account, noteasy. And yet he staked out asimilarly successful careerpath, first as a TV actorand writer, then as adirector of two of thefunniest films ever made. Ican remember the firsttime I saw “This Is SpinalTap,” his big-screendirectorial debut, andliterally collapsed withlaughter. Thismockumentary about adreadful (fictional) Britishrock band was soirreverently on target thatnot a few viewers thoughtthe group was real. Themusical numbers the bandexecuted, in more waysthan one, were satiricgems. My favorite:“(Listen To The) FlowerPeople.” Throughout it all, including the introductionof the famous line “Turn itup to 11,” Reiner and hisamazing cast ofimprovisatory cutupsmanage to make thesejokers seem sympathetic. There’s somethingtouchingly valiant abouttheir quest for stardom.“The Princess Bride” isjust as funny, but morefantastical. It began as aWilliam Goldman novelbased on fairy tales hewrote for his children. Thebook’s mythic gossameratmosphere survives in thefilm, which is equal partsfantasia and burlesque, with dewy romance, fairmaidens, villainousprinces, six-fingeredbullies, and swordplay.(Mandy Patinkin’s InigoMontoya!) It’s all greatfun, and if you saw it at ayoung enough age, it likelyremains a cherishedmemory – and one happilyrevisited as an adult.I don’t think it’s a stretchto say that the man whomade this movie – or thenostalgic, melancholy,look-back about fourjourneying boys in “Standby Me” – is all of a piecewith the political activist. In 1998, in California, hesuccessfully championed aproposition calling for atax on tobacco products tobe spent on earlychildhood programs.According to the LosAngeles Times,Proposition 10 pumped“more than $11 billion intopreschools, teachertraining and support forfamilies struggling to raisetheir kids.” In 1999, hebecame chairman of theFirst 5 California Childrenand Families Commission, providing health andeducation services forchildren and their families.First 5 refers to the firstfive years of life.He walked the walk. One of the hallmarks ofReiner’s directorial career, especially in the 1980s andearly ’90s, was hisversatility. This, too, was, Ithink, an expression of hisopenness to experience. The genre-hopping wasflabbergasting: “This IsSpinal Tap” was followednot long after by “Stand byMe” and “The PrincessBride.” Then came theNora Ephron-scripted“When Harry Met Sally”(everybody’s favorite romcom) and the ghoulishlycomic Stephen Kinginspired “Misery.” Acouple of years later camethe Aaron Sorkincourtroom drama “A FewGood Men,” whichdeserves to be rememberedfor more than JackNicholson shouting, “Youcan’t handle the truth!”It was a career, and a life, that was a rarity inHollywood. Reiner playedby no one’s rules but hisown. The integrity thatshone forth, in those films, and in that life, is a legacythat won’t fade.By Peter RainerFilmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer pose forphotographers as they arrive for the 2023 Kennedy CenterHonors in Washington, D.C.Memoriam.qxp_My Turn 1-2H 12/29/25 3:08 PM Page 1

When Matuszewski —who goes by her middle namePearl because “it’s the shortest ofmy names” — first entered Due at619 N. Wabash, Richard Nixonhad yet to launch his secondpresidential campaign, TheBeatles were singing about afictional bandleader namedSergeant Pepper, and MartinLuther King Jr. was urging peopleof all races to peacefully protestcivil rights violations. In today’s social media-addledworld, Chicago’s hottest pizzaestablishment is most likely theone garnering the most “likes” onInstagram. That is, until anotherpizzeria comes along and producesmore. Pearl has neither the timenor inclination to sample thecompetition. Her 42-year career asa massage therapist is proof thatthere is no need to abandon, oreven tinker with, something youlove. “I didn’t even think I’d be alive in2025,” said Pearl, who can’testimate how many slices of deepdish have passed her lips. She justknows she’s been hooked on Due’srecipe since wandering into therenovated brownstone with hercousin, Sally, picking up somedeep dish and sharing it withSally’s fellow employees at theTime-Life building. Until then, she’d only tried Chicago’s thincrust alternative, knownthroughout the city as “tavernstyle” pizza.“It was greasy cheese with balls ofsausage and tasted horrible,” sherecalls.Don’t Cross the Pizza “CEO”Having lunch with Due’s mostloyal customer is akin to diningwith the restaurant’s CEO, whichis how Pearl playfully refers toherself.“I’m the Chief Eating Operator,”she says.Due’s Marketing Director ChrisDellamarggio called Pearl abeloved customer but said herdevotion to the brand is not overlyunique.“We have thousands of folks whohave called Uno and Due theirfavorite pizza for decades,” hesaid. It’s about a great product andtreating people like family.”On a recent visit, Pearl waltzeddirectly into the kitchen to greether “family” and ensure hersignature order was beingprepared to her specifications. That means the Numero Unoindividual pizza with no cheese(“it bothers my sinuses”), sausage, pepperoni, and extra onions, greenpeppers, black olives, garlic andmushrooms.“And burn the crust,” she says.Slow Down, Stop and Eat PizzaPearl’s loyalty has literally madeher a walking billboard forPizzeria Due, which opened in1955, twelve years after founderIke Sewell launched Pizzeria Uno,a block south. A second restaurantwas needed to accommodateUno’s overflow crowds. WhenDue celebrated its 70th birthdaylast month, Pearl was there, working the room and dancingwith strangers, including thiscolumnist, as a Frank Sinatraimpersonator warbled “My Kindof Town.”When Due management decidedto reward struggling cab driverswith free pizza slices, Pearlgrabbed a blow-up decorativepizza slice and stood on OntarioStreet, inviting cabbies to stop andreceive some deep dishnourishment. Despite living fourmiles from Due, she remains aregular customer; although, hervisits are down significantly fromthe thrice weekly forays she’smade in earlier years. She stays intouch with former employeeswho’ve departed Due for warmerclimates and always includes astop at her favorite haunt whenfriends visit Chicago.“I’ve tried other pizza places withan open mind and an open mouth,”she said. “It’s just not as good.”She hopes to someday be the voiceof a commercial jingle for therestaurant. She’s already written afew lines and recorded them onher phone. The ceremonyitself is filled with sombercommemorations and highlystructured military salutes –reminders of the country’s harshhistory, and enduring spirit ofresilience. Poland’s capital,Warsaw, is a reminder of this aswell.Along with hosting the country’sseat of government, Warsaw isPoland’s cosmopolitan businesshub. Travelers seeking Old Worldquaintness should head forKraków; but for today’s Poland, visit Warsaw. It’s a 21 st-centurycity with a dark 20 th-centurystory.In fact, most of Warsaw's past hasbeen hard. Since becomingPoland’s capital in 1596, it hasseen wave after wave of foreignrulers and invasions – andcurrently, it’s going through ademographic shift, as hundreds ofthousands of Ukrainian refugeesare becoming citizens. It’s a bigtalking point in modern Warsaw, and yet another fascinating chapterin the city’s history.Warsaw’s darkest days cameduring the Nazi occupation ofWorld War II. First, its Jewishresidents were forced into a tinyghetto. They rose up...and wereslaughtered. Then, its Polishresidents rose up...and wereslaughtered. In retaliation, Hitlerordered the block-by-blockdestruction of the city. As thesmoke cleared and the Nazisretreated, the Soviets marched inand claimed the pile of rubble thatwas once Warsaw. It would beanother 45 years before theSoviets would leave and the Polescould freely govern their capitaland their country. After the war, the Poles almostgave up on re-creating oldWarsaw, but ultimately theydecided to rebuild, constructing acity of contrasts. Now,painstakingly restored medievallanes border pedestrian-friendlyparks and sleek skyscrapers. Now,painstakingly restored medievallanes border pedestrian-friendlyparks and sleek skyscrapers— ajumbled aesthetic that reflects thecity’s hard history.Today’s Warsaw is safer, wealthier, and happier than ever. You’ll encounter stylishly dressedlocals, sophisticated shoppingboulevards, and thoughtfulmuseums covering World War II,Jewish history, hometowncomposer Frédéric Chopin, andPolish art.The city has two historic districts:the 13th-century Old Town and the15th-century New Town. Both arenearly complete 20th-centuryreconstructions, right down to thehiggledy-piggledy charm of thecolorful buildings. The countlessrestaurants in the historic districtprovide a good introduction toPolish cuisine – and the nationaldrink, vodka. Many traditionaldishes – herring, cold cuts, pickles, steak tartare – pair naturally withchilled vodka. Poles don’t sip theirvodka. It’s a bottoms-up beverage.(“That way it only stings once.”)For me, the pleasure of Warsaw isjust connecting with its big-citypeople, who are as warm andcharming as small-town folk.Poles love Americans – they thinkof us as big brothers and sistersfrom across the Atlantic. When thecommunist government gave thepeople a small shot atrepresentative government in1989, the “get out the vote” postershowed Gary Cooper from HighNoon– holding not a gun, but avoting card.Remnants of Warsaw’s earliermagnificence show up in huge, idyllic Łazienki Park. It’ssprinkled with Neoclassicalbuildings, peacocks, and youngPoles in love. Poland’s very lastking built the park in the 18thcentury for his summer residenceand as a place for his citizens torelax.A monument to Chopin, Poland’sgreat Romantic composer andfavorite son, graces the park’s rosegarden. Even though Chopin leftWarsaw for Paris, his final wishwas to have his heart brought backto his native Poland. And so it was, after his death in 1849. It now liesburied in a pillar in Warsaw’s HolyCross Church (the rest of him isinterred at Paris’s Père LachaiseCemetery).Locals still proudly celebrate thecomposer’s music. On Sundays, huge crowds fill Łazienki Park forChopin concerts that take place infront of his statue – and smallerodes to the composer pop up allacross town. When I was last inWarsaw, I went to an intimate,salon-style concert hosted at ahotel. The pianist, seated at a babygrand under a lovingly lit portraitof Chopin, closed his eyes as if tochannel all his heart into hisfingers flying across the keys. I,along with the rest of the musiclovers in attendance, swooned.I was reminded how, beforerecorded music was evenimaginable, lovers of culture allover Europe would gather forconcerts just like this, wheremusicians would share the greatmusic of the day. And it felt soappropriate that Chopin is stillcelebrated by resilient, cultureloving Poles right here in themiddle of Warsaw, a city thatrefuses to die.By Rick StevesPoland’s last king built huge, idyllic Łazienki Park as a summer residence and place for his citizens to relax – and today, Poles still come here to do just that. In 2025,fewer than half the worst moviesbelonged to franchises and onlytwo were sequels per se.The majority of 2025's worstmovies came from establishedfilmmakers courting acclaim, orstudios wildly miscalculating thecharm of their premise. Linksdirect readers to full reviews of themovies where available, but somemade the list after their theatricalrelease or streaming premieres.10. 'Freaky Tales'The directors of Captain Marvelreturned to their indie roots butforgot the distinct voice that madetheir films Half Nelson andMississippi Grind memorable.Freaky Tales is based on trueevents from Oakland, Calif., in1987 but feels derivative when allof its anthology stories lead to thesame sort of violence. Itsunmotivated stylistic choices andhomages that cross the line didn'tmake much of an impact atSundance 2024 as it took a yearand a half for Lionsgate toultimately give it a limited releasethis year.9. 'Springsteen: Deliver MeFrom Nowhere'It's gotten too easy to mock badmusician biopics, but they keepmaking the same mistakes like thisyear's Blue Moon and Song SungBlue. Even focusing on onealbum, Springsteen is laughablewhen Bruce (Jeremy AllenWhite) translates inspiration intofamous songs and the filmassumes audiences already knowthings it should be illuminating. This film does its subject thebiggest disservice, turningSpringsteen's real life mentalhealth struggles into plot points.8. 'The Hand That Rocks the Cradle'This remake should just disappearinto the streaming ether, but beforeit does, here's why. A modernupdate of the \"nanny from hell\"thriller could be relevant. Instead, this remake relies on mostly thesame motivations, watered downof their sexual tension. Theremake pays lip service to relevantissues like a child's developingorientation and weaponizing herrebellion against parents, but thetwist is only that these newcharacters behave less believablythan the ones from 1992.7. 'Flight Risk'To be fair, they released this inJanuary so they knew Flight Riskwasn't major competition. Butthere's more exposition in the first10 minutes than in the wholeMCU all to set up a generic thrillerabout transporting a mob witness. As the witness, Topher Grace isinsufferable whining about hissituation and completelyunbelievable that he was a mobaccountant. They'd have eaten himalive. Mark Wahlberg doesn'tfare much better as the hammyhitman. The conversations theyhave with voices on the airplaneradio are absurd. Director MelGibson has fallen far from theperformances and epic historicaldrama he directed in Braveheart.6. 'Fountain of Youth'This all-star, globe-trottingtreasure hunt is worse thanwatching someone's vacationslideshow, back before people justposted vacation pics on Facebook.Fountain of Youth has lesscharisma too, mistaking aninsufferably toxic hero (JohnKrasinski) for charming. Actionnever rouses, despite filming atleast in part on location and inphysical sets, but the wholeendeavor feels apathetic5. 'Another Simple Favor'They got the gang back together, but without a book on which tobase the sequel. So, themachinations reuniting characterswho survived the first moviereduce both of their intelligence.Even allowing that another murdercan happen amongst the samecrowd, what really spoils the fun isthat every character has becomemean.4. 'Ella McKay'If not for the irresponsibledepiction of mental health issues,Ella McKay may have simplybeen a forgettable misfire. Thereare many other problems, such asuninformed portrayal of politics, unrealistic depiction ofrelationships and a randomcharacter given outsized screentime, played by the director's son.All of that is just annoying.Misrepresenting mental health isharmful.3. 'Den of Thieves 2: Pantera'This is just pampered actorsposturing as tough guys saying theF word a lot. But that's what madethe first one popular so missionaccomplished?2. 'How to Train Your Dragon'This isn't the live-action remakethat least gets what was greatabout the animated original. Thatwas 2019's The Lion King. But in2025, How to Train Your Dragonrenders the DreamWorks classic asa mundane CGI movie. The effectitself adds levels of separation thatdistract from the characters'journey, while the film dilutes theanimated vibrancy with anovercast aesthetic.1. 'A Minecraft Movie'It's not too much to hope a moviebased on a corporate asset becreative. The Lego Movie andBarbie exist. No such imaginationsurvived the development of TheMinecraft Movie. What's mostshocking is they built sets inMinecraft style because all of itstill looks like disembodied greenscreen. Jack Black earns hispaycheck selling it but he's stillsaddled with exposition in one ofat least four convoluted subplotsthat barely revolve aroundbuilding things, the whole point ofthe game.By Fred TopelJeremy Allen WhiteWEEKEND BOX OFFICE REPORTDecember 26th - 28th, 2025 1.
