I’verested my chin on my chest incrowded subway cars, in middleseats on airplanes, during kids’sporting events and with my feeton my desk while my computermonitor also goes into sleep mode.Note: The latter is frowned upon ifyou are not self employed.I drift off for between five to sevenminutes — yes, you read that right— and awake feeling refreshedand ready for whatever theremaining day holds. I don’t feelcompletely asleep. Never have Imissed the “We are ready to beginboarding” announcement ifnapping at an airport gate — butI’m blissfully unaware of thechaos surrounding me.For me, naps counteract chaos,which is why I feel a siesta, asnooze, some shut-eye, orwhatever you choose to call it,needs to become part of thiscountry’s culture before we gofurther off the rails.From Barcelona toVietnam: A Global Tour of Power NappingIt’s been widely reported that thesiesta is declining in Spain, thecountry that most embraced it untilrecently. True, I didn’t see a lot ofclosed businesses while strollingin Barcelona last year, but chalkthat up to the city’s boomingtourism trade. It’s hard to lockyour shop when there areconstantly hordes of visitorsoutside, eager to buy leathergoods, ceramics and any cookingingredient they think will maketheir paella actually taste likepaella.Other countries I recently visitedaren’t letting go of sleep thateasily.
