Page 4 HAPPENINGS June 22, 2023 www.hap2it.com Past Lives stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo said that writer-director Celine Song forbade them to touch until their characters make contact in the film, to create a sense of longing. Lee plays Nora in the film, now in theaters. Nora left Korea as a child and now lives in New York with her husband (John Magarro). Her childhood friend, Hae Sung (Yoo), gets a chance to see her when he visits New York 24 years after Nora left her native country. "It's human nature," Lee said in a recent Zoom interview. "If you're told not to do something, it makes you think about it." Lee said that restraint led to "a very visceral understanding of what longing and physical chemistry is." Yoo said the scene in which Nora and Hae Sung hug after reuniting was the first time the actors hugged in real life. Yoo said the anticipation also aided his performance as a longing childhood friend. "It built this tension of longing for each other," Yoo said. "As actors you love to hug and be very physical. All of a sudden there was this buildup. I remember having these visceral feelings, my heart pounding out of my chest and sweaty palms." Yoo went even further in his preparation to develop physical manifestations of Hae Sung's tension. He practiced tying a rope around his arms, so he would remember how it felt to hold his elbows stiff. "So, I would always be stiff and tight, as if to show that he has repressed emotions," Yoo said. "You see through his body language that he's slowly emotionally opening up and revealing himself." Lee said it also was rewarding "to be able to play a normal woman" in Past Lives. She has worked steadily in comedies like Russian Doll and Sisters and dramas like TV's The Morning Show, where her characters service plots centered on White women. Lee said she never expected a film to focus on an experience to which she related as a Korean American. Lee said even speaking Korean with Yoo in New York City allowed her to express a side of herself she often hides in English-speaking culture. "I never expected to be asked to even show this part of me, not to mention in service of a greater, universal story that is just about love," Lee said. "It felt like I was always finding a side door in, in terms of these wonderful women that I've gotten to play in the past." Lee said the increase in Asian writers in Hollywood has expanded the material available to Asian actors, but that many of those roles still focus on Asianidentity. Lee said Past Lives' Nora and Hae Sung felt like people missing each other regardless of their origins. Yoo was born in Hamburg, Germany, and now lives in Korea. He learned to speak Korean third, after German and then English. He said he also related to Past Lives' depiction of longing because of his own longing to be accepted by German, Korean and English cultures. Yoo said he can "feel like an outsider, a certain type of loneliness or melancholy. I'm happy that I could express that within the script." After Past Lives, Yoo filmed the series, The Worst Boy in the World, playing a detective who returns from five years in an asylum to solve a crime that is linked to his family and his own mental health. As Lee returned to work on The Morning Show, on which she plays a producer, she said Past Lives inspired her to think of more ways in which Asian actors like herself and Asian creators can participate in Hollywood. "It does set the bar tremendously high, honestly, in terms of what kinds of stories I want to tell and this ongoing fight to ensure that it's more equitable," Lee said. "What makes an American movie? It can be this." By Fred Topel Greta Lee stars in "Past Lives." Unusual 'Past Lives' direction helped Greta Lee, Teo Yoo feel longing Born Greta Jiehan Lee March 7, 1983 (age 40) Los Angeles, California While attending Harvard-Westlake School, she became interested in the performing arts. After high school, she studied communication and theater atNorthwestern University. She then moved to New York City to pursue acting. Lee made her Broadway debut in 2007 as highachieving, multilingual honor student Marcy Park inThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Beeand in 2010, appeared inLa Bêteas Dorine. Lee paid her dues with small roles in TV’s “Law & Order: SVU,” “Nurse Jackie,” and “New Girl” before landing a staring role as Maxine in the Netflix comedy-drama “Russian Doll” and as Stella in the Apple TV+ drama “The Morning Show.” Lee voiced Lyla in apost-credits sceneof the animated film“SpiderMan: Into the Spiderverse,”and returned in the 2023 sequel,“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse.” FYI Greta Lee

Page 6 HAPPENINGS June 22, 2023 www.hap2it.com When I need a dose of quaint cobbled towns and storybook castles while in Germany, I drop into the dreamy Mosel Valley. The Mosel, located near Germany’s western border, is the Rhine’s peaceful little sister. The main tourist town of Cochem, tucked between steep vineyards and the river, boasts picturesque medieval streets. Stroll the delightful riverfront promenade, play life-size chess, or just grab a bench and watch Germany at play. To join in the fun, take the Sesselbahn chairlift up to a hilltop (and restaurant), enjoy the views, hike down, and end up at a wine-tasting at Weingut Rademacher. Wine-tasting is a popular activity here. Sample local white wines or Roter-Weinbergs-Pfirsich Likör – a cordial made from the small, tart “red peaches” unique to the Mosel Valley. Throughout the region on summer weekends and during the fall harvest, towns host wine festivals with oompah bands, colorful costumes, and dancing, powered by the good food and wine. Like most Mosel towns, Cochem grew up below its castle. Though it looks majestic – rising from a hill above town – Cochem’s castle is better admired from afar. This 19th-century reconstruction is more fanciful than authentic. Burg Eltz, on the other hand, is the real deal. Lurking in a mysterious forest about 30 minutes by car from Cochem, this is my favorite castle in all of Europe. Thanks to smart diplomacy and clever marriages, Burg Eltz avoided wars and was never destroyed, remaining in the Eltz family for eight centuries. The castle is furnished throughout basically as it was 500 years ago. That’s rare in castles. It was a comfortable castle for its day: 80 rooms made cozy by 40 fireplaces and wall-hanging tapestries. The Grand Gallery was where nobles met. A carved jester and a rose look down on the big table, reminding those who gathered that they were free to discuss anything (“fool’s freedom” – jesters could say anything to the king), but nothing discussed could leave the room (the “rose of silence”). The finely decorated master bedroom contains all the comforts of the time, including a toilet – one of 20 in the castle, each flushed (occasionally) by rainwater. Just upstream from Cochem is Beilstein, the quaintest of all Mosel towns. If you’re looking for convalescence, this is the place to go. Beilstein has zero food shops, zero ATMs, one bus stop, one mailbox, and about 140 residents who run about 30 guesthouses and eateries. It’s nicknamed the “Sleeping Beauty of the Mosel” because until about 1900, it was inaccessible except by boat. Today it’s still just grape vines, cobbles, fancy door knockers, the smell of dank back alleys, and Mosel River views. Midday in peak season, its charm is trampled by tourists. But early and late, it’s a dream. On my first morning here, a rumble shook my room at the Hotel Haus Lipmann and woke me up. Stepping outside onto my small terrace, I saw a massive barge filled with coal lumbering by on the river. In a moment, it was gone, and I was left with the tranquil essence of the Mosel. Across the glassy river, the sleepy little ferry was parked. Above it a church spire stuck like a slate spike through a hill cloaked in a green corduroy of vineyards. As if animating some symphony to the direction of a cosmic conductor, a huge and orderly flock of black birds swooped back and forth like sound waves across the fields and around the spire. Biking and boating are great ways to while away a Beilstein day. Boats come and go all day for relaxing river trips, though because of the locks, they can take longer than you’d like. I opted for a riverside bike ride. Smooth and perfectly flat bike lanes remain separate from car traffic, allowing you to ride in peace while admiring gorgeous riverside scenery. Wrapping up my day, I sat on the hotel’s terrace. Sipping my sprightly white wine, I gazed at the tiny two-car ferry sliding on its cable back and forth across the river. Its slow, monotonous rhythm and the bikers that came and went with each landing were mesmerizing. But I like the tune the Mosel River plays. It’s impressive that just a couple of quiet days here can relax your mind and restore your spirit. By Rick Steves Germany’s tranquil, romantic Mosel Valley travel Cochem is the hub of the middle Mosel and marks the start of the most scenic stretch of the valley. The FAA announced in a statement that it will require a secondary physical barrier on new commercial aircraft to protect the flight deck from intrusion when the flight deck door is opened. According to the final rule, the new barrier "will be deployed (closed and locked) whenever the flight deck door is opened while the airplane is in flight." The rule was adopted because when the flight deck door is open for lavatory breaks, meal service or crew changes the flight deck could be vulnerable to attack. "Every day, pilots and flight crews transport millions of Americans safely -- and today we are taking another important step to make sure they have the physical protections they deserve," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement. The rule spells out that the purpose of the secondary barrier "is to slow such an attack long enough so that an open flight deck door can be closed and locked before an attacker could reach the flight deck." "No pilot should have to worry about an intrusion on the flight deck," said Acting FAA Associate Administrator for Safety David Boulter in a statement. The FAA estimates the rule will begin to apply to new airplanes operating by the end of 2023. After analysis, the FAA said it determined the final rule has benefits that justify its costs and won't create unnecessary obstacles to foreign commerce or impose an unfunded mandate on other governments or private entities. In the published final rule, the FAA also said it has determined that this action will not have a substantial direct effect on the states. www.hap2it.com June 22, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 7 Michael Jordan to sell Charlotte Hornets NBA legend Michael Jordan agreed to see his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, the franchise announced. The Hornets said the new ownership group includes recording artists J. Cole and Eric Church, as well as investors Chris Shumway, Dan Sundheim, Ian Loring, Dyal HomeCourt Partners, among others. Jordan will retain a minority ownership share of the franchise. The transaction must be approved by NBA owners. Jordan became part owner of the franchise -- then known as the Charlotte Bobcats -- in 2006. He gained majority control for $180 million in 2010. Jordan was the only Black majority owner in the NBA. The franchise went to the playoffs just twice during his tenure as majority owner, losing in the first round each time. The team totaled three winning seasons. The Hornets went 27-55 in 2022-23, their second-worst mark under Jordan since the 2012-13 season. Julian Sands search resumes five months after actor vanished The search for British actor Julian Sands -- missing since January on California's Mt. Baldy - - resumed over last weekend with warmer weather and additional snow melt, but there was still no sign of the actor five months later. More than 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies and staff, along with two helicopters and drone crews "continued ongoing search efforts Saturday in the Mount Baldy wilderness for missing hiker Julian Sands. Unfortunately, Mr. Sands was not located." the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. While search crews hoped that warmer weather would provide better access than the previous eight searches since January, portions of the mountain "remained inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions." Sands, 65, who has appeared in more than 150 motion pictures and television shows including The Killing Fields, A Room with a View and Arachnophobia, was reported missing on Jan. 13. The actor is an avid mountaineer and is believed to be somewhere along the Baldy Bowl Trail in the area of Mt. Baldy, which is a 10,000-foot peak. In January, the sheriff's department said it had to rescue 14 hikers from the area, including two who later died, due to dangerous winter conditions. Rescue crews plan to continue searching for the missing actor in a "limited capacity," according to the department which said it has completed eight ground and air searches for Sand. Volunteers have spent more than 500 hours searching for the actor. Deion Sanders says he may need left foot amputated NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who has previously had two toes amputated, says he may need to have his left foot completely amputated due to blood circulation issues. Sanders, the current University of Colorado head football coach, met this week with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ken Hunt, vascular surgeons Dr. Donald Jacobs and Dr. Max Wohlauer, and athletic trainer Lauren Askevold to discuss his injury. "I don't have feeling in the bottom of my foot at all," the former NFL star and Hall of Famer told his medical team in a filmed meeting posted on YouTube for "Thee Pregame Show." Sanders had two of his toes amputated in 2021 due to poor circulation. He said that if an operation is necessary, he wants to do it as quickly as possible to avoid missing any of the upcoming football season. "As you know I've faced some medical challenges with my foot but I've never said 'WHY ME'" Sanders captioned a video clip posted to his Instagram. "I'm Coach Prime and I'm built for this." Tune in to Happenings Q&A on Friday, June 30th when Dr. Cernak joins the conversation on AM1050 WLIP. Seal pup climbs onto surfers' boards at California beach A drone photographer at a California beach captured video of an orphaned seal pup that swam up to multiple surfers and climbed onto their boards. Ed Hartel said he was flying his drone at Tourmaline Surf Park in San Diego and trying to see if he could capture footage of a seal pup that had been spotted swimming near the beach in recent days. Hartel had no problem locating the animal, as it was spending some quality time with the gathered surfers. "Basically, he swims from board to board jumping on different surfers' boards. He'll sit there for five to 10 minutes and then paddle to another surfer's board and he does it all morning long," Hartel told KFMBTV. He said surfers did the right thing by not touching the seal. "None of the surfers are touching him, they're very respectful, they're letting him do his thing. It's just quite odd it keeps jumping up on surfboards," he said. Beach visitors said they believe a seal killed by a great white shark in the area a few days earlier was the pup's mother. SeaWorld said a crew was sent to the beach to evaluate the pup after reports came in from surfers. The crew found the seal in the water and determined it appeared healthy and was not in need of rescuing. coast to coast Nearly 1 in 5 adults say they've been diagnosed with depression, CDC says Nearly one in five adults have been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lifetimes, according to a study released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report found that 18.4 percent of people have been diagnosed with depression, but it varies substantially by state. West Virginia was the top spot with 27.5 percent of its residents being diagnosed. "There was considerable geographic variation in the prevalence of depression, with the highest state and county estimates of depression observed along the Appalachian and southern Mississippi Valley regions," researchers from the CDC and Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Tennessee wrote in the new report. "This report provides current estimates of national, state-level, and county-level prevalence of adults reporting a lifetime diagnosis of depression." Many of the highest states were in the Appalachian region and in the south. After West Virginia, the next nine were Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Vermont, Alabama, Louisiana, Washington, Missouri, and Montana. Nearly one in four women were diagnosed with depression, compared with 13.3 percent of men. There was also an age gap, with more than 20 percent of adults ages 18-24 being diagnosed, compared with 14.2 percent of adults 65 and older. "The fact that Americans are more depressed and struggling after this time of incredible stress and isolation is perhaps not surprising," Dr. Rebecca Brendel, president of the American Psychiatric Association, which was not involved in the new research, said in May, according to CNN. "There are lingering effects on our health, especially our mental health, from the past three years that disrupted everything we knew." Michael Jordan Deion Sanders

Page 8 HAPPENINGS June 22, 2023 www.hap2it.com Asteroid City cast members Maya Hawke, Adrien Brody, Stephen Park and more said the specificity of writer-director Wes Anderson's stylized period piece made it easier to embody their characters. In the film, now in theaters, a theater troupe puts on a play set in 1955. The wraparound scenes of the theater are in a square black and wide frame, while the play is presented in full color widescreen. Brody, 50, plays the director of the play, Schubert Green. "So much of Wes' worlds are created," Brody, who also appeared in Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "Because of this wonderful visual aesthetic that he gravitates toward and envisions, you just exist within the world on a stage or a giant set that's built," Brody said. In the 1955 scenes, a group of parents and children meet for a Junior Stargazers convention. When an alien arrives, Gen. Grif Gibson (Jeffrey Wright) quarantines the visitors who saw the extraterrestrial. Wright, 57, who also worked with Anderson on Dispatch, said certain words in the script helped him focus on '50s language. "I loved just saying the word 'frankfurter,'" Wright said. "You don't say 'frankfurter' very often, but there's just something about that word that speaks to a very specific era that informs just the performance and the character." Hawke, 24, plays June, a teacher who supervises an entire class of Stargazers. Going even decades further back than her '80s Stranger Things character, Hawke said she finds the research available for any historical piece helpful. "There's so much more information available about times gone than there is about the time we're in," Hawke said. "So it's much easier to do research." While her stay in Asteroid City is extended, June meets a cowboy, Montana (Rupert Friend). The Brit speaks in a cowboy drawl, which Friend said added to the film's specificity. "It just felt like part of the landscape that was as important as the double denim and the lasso," he said. Stephen Park and Hope Davis play parents with children at the Stargazers Convention. Park said spending the duration of the shoot on the Asteroid City set made the environment feel natural. "I think it seeps into you," Park said. "It starts to just become the reality that you're living." Park added that the cast could become as close as the confined characters when living in the same hotel and eating meals together. Park said Anderson continued talking about the film during downtime. Davis said the Asteroid City picnic area served as a lunch area for the cast and crew. The motel in which the characters stayed doubled as the dressing rooms. "You don't want to leave the world of it," Davis said. "You want to stay in it." Though the characters of Asteroid City are itching to leave, cast members said they benefited from the confined experience. Park said that the specific design of Anderson's film made confinement appealing for modern actors. "Everything is thought through," Park said. "Nothing is left to chance." By Karen Butler Maya Hawke, Adrien Brody embrace 'Asteroid City' design Adrien Brody stars in "Asteroid City." From left to right, Liev Schreiber, Steve Carell, Stephen Park and Hope Davis star in "Asteroid City."

A Johns Hopkins University study looked at emergency room injuries from 2001 to 2020 related to walking a leashed dog. There were nearly 423,000 accidents. The top three injuries: finger fractures, traumatic brain injury and shoulder sprains. Women and adults over age 65 were most likely to sustain serious injury, usually due to falls. "Clinicians should be aware of these risks and convey them to patients, especially women and older adults," said the researchers. "We encourage clinicians to screen for pet ownership, assess fracture and fall risk, and discuss safe dog walking practices at regular health maintenance visits for these vulnerable groups. "Despite our findings, we also strongly encourage people to leash their dogs wherever it is legally required." Body of Knowledge The human body glows, emitting visible light at levels that rise and fall throughout the day. However, the light emitted is 1,000 times less intense than the levels necessary to be seen by our naked eyes. Get Me That, Stat! Half as many children in the United States were diagnosed with asthma in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with previous years. Researchers think fewer colds may be part of the reason, aided and abetted by masking and keeping children separated, i.e., not going to school. Counts 248: Number of previously unknown viral families found in fecal samples of newborns Source: Nature Microbiology Stories for the Waiting Room New research suggests that deep sleep — when a person's brain activity, breathing and heart rate slow down, body temperature drops and muscles relax — may act as a buffer against memory loss caused by Alzheimer's disease because it increases resilience against an accumulating amyloid beta protein in the brain linked to dementia. "If we believe that sleep is so critical for memory," said professor of neuroscience and psychology Matthew Walker at the University of California, Berkeley, "could sleep be one of those missing pieces in the explanatory puzzle that would tell us exactly why two people with the same amounts of severe amyloid pathology have very different memory? "If the findings supported the hypothesis, it would be thrilling because sleep is something we can change. It is a modifiable factor." Doc Talk Occult: In medicine, it refers to something not visible to the naked eye, but detectable using tools such as a microscope or lab tests, thus ruling out supernatural entities. Best Medicine Q: Why can't you hear psychologists urinating? A: Because the p is silent. Observation "Some things you have to do every day. Eating seven apples on Saturday night instead of one a day just isn't going to get the job done." — American motivational speaker Jim Rohn (1930-2009) Medical History This week in 1933, R. Plato Schwartz debuted the electrobasograph, a device that created photographic records of "the walking gait of individuals to distinguish between actual and spurious limps in damage claims for injuries." Later, Schwartz would expand his research to study the effects of poliomyelitis and cerebral palsy on muscle function. Med School Q: What is the biggest joint in the human body? A: The knee. The hip joint is second largest. Last Words "Bring me a bulletproof vest." — Convicted murderer James W. Page 26 HAPPENINGS June 22, 2023 www.hap2it.com It’s official! You’re engaged! Congratulations. Now it’s time to let everyone else in the news. It’s time to plan an engagement party and show off that rock on your finger. Traditionally, it is the bride’s parents that host the event, but anyone can host an engagement party, including the bride and groom. Engagement parties can be as formal or informal as you like. You can book a banquet hall and hire a caterer, or you can host the party at the local bowling alley and serve everyone pizza and soda. You can have a clambake on the beach or a barbeque in your backyard. Once you have a setting, you can get to work on the guest list. It isn’t necessary for you to invite everyone you know. Immediate family members on both sides are a must. After all, the point of an engagement party is to bring the two families together and give them an opportunity to get to know one and another. If you have already selected the wedding party, you should invite them too, as the party will give them a chance to mingle. Keep in mind that an invitation to the engagement party almost always warrants an invitation to the wedding, so make sure you invite close friends as well. Don’t invite anyone who may not make the guest list for your wedding. That could result in hurt feelings down the road. While an invitation to the engagement party necessitates an invitation to the wedding in most cases, it does not necessitate acceptance. Some people may not have the time or money to attend both your engagement party and your wedding. Be prepared for some declines, especially from people living out of town, and be understanding and gracious. If you have a rather large family or circle of friends, you might want to have more than one engagement party. Just don’t expect a lot of gifts. Gifts are not necessary, especially if you are having more than one engagement party. You may register, however, for guests who insist on bringing a gift. Just remember to set aside whatever gifts you do receive, open them in private and send out thank-you cards as soon as possible. Engagement parties can be great fun. They give brides and grooms and their families and friends the chance to get to know one and another and relax a little before the real planning begins. If you have the budget to throw an engagement party or someone offers to throw you one, consider it. You’ll get a good taste of what’s to come. By Tresa Erickson The baby dilemma You’ve been to weddings where babies are in attendance and you’ve been to weddings where babies are not in attendance. There are pros and cons to each. When they’re happy, babies can make wonderful additions to a wedding; when they’re out of sorts, they can be terrors. You would like to think your baby would be bubbly, but you can’t know for sure. What is a new mom to do? Will you arrange for your baby to attend your wedding, or will you find someone to care for your baby at home while you say, “I do”? Whether your baby attends your wedding depends first upon you. What is your preference? Is this your first baby? Would you be a complete and utter mess if your baby were not with you? Would you be wracked with worry? If so, you might want to arrange to have your baby somewhere onsite, perhaps not sitting next to you but with a babysitter in a room nearby. If you are bit more relaxed, you might want to consider leaving your baby with someone at home, especially if you think your baby might pose too much of a distraction. You’re going to be busy, and so are most of the people in the wedding party—why add to the activity with a baby in need of constant care? Your decision also depends upon your baby. What would your baby prefer? Is your baby rather congenial? Does your baby like people? If so, they might be perfectly at ease at your wedding and not mind being passed around and held by a lot of different people. If, on the other hand, your baby is not comfortable around people and tends to cling to you, you might want to reconsider having them at your wedding. Do you really want to walk down the aisle and say, “I do,” with a baby on your hip? You also need to consider the uncertainty factor. The best babies in the world have their moments. Your baby could be delightful right up until the exchange of vows and then let out a wail of terror and continue to fuss throughout the rest of the event. Babies are also prone to accidents, soiling their clothes and the clothes of anyone who might be holding them, including you in your expensive white bridal gown, your spouse in his tuxedo rental or an out-of-town guest with no ready access to a change of clothes. Only you can determine whether to have your baby attend your wedding. Should you do, be prepared. Understand that you and your groom will be busy and arrange for someone to care for the baby, preferably someone not directly involved in the wedding. Your mother might adore her new grandchild, but remember, she also adores you and would probably like to see you get married. Your teenage niece, on the other hand, might rather be off in another room caring for your new baby. That’s right. You’ll want to set up a place onsite for the babysitter to take your baby for feedings, naps and play. Don’t expect your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep during the reception in a ballroom with a lot of high-stepping going on. Finally, make sure you have ample supplies for your baby. You’ll be far too busy to make a mad dash home for diapers or formula. Choosing what to do with your baby during your wedding is a big decision. Think it through carefully, and should you decide it would be best to keep your baby at home, don’t get wrapped up in the guilt. Your baby won’t know the difference, and you can always arrange to take some wedding photos with them later or have the babysitter drop by with them at the reception. The Parental Dilemma Blended families are not uncommon these days. A bride and groom may have more than two sets of parents to accommodate in their wedding. If the parents do not know each other, as is the case with most in-laws, or are uncomfortable with each other, as is sometimes the case with adoptions and remarriages, accommodating everyone can be difficult. Here are some tips for brides and grooms dealing with multiple sets of parents, adoptive, biological, step or whatever the case may be. All parents should be invited to participate in the wedding, but only those who are willing should be expected to take part. The bride and groom should sit down with each parent on their home turf and find out who wants to participate in their wedding. Some people are more comfortable sitting on the sidelines. The groom’s stepmother, for example, might want nothing more than to have a dance with him at the reception. The bride and groom should arrange for that and leave it be. When possible, the bride and groom should play to the parents’ skills. If the groom’s stepfather is a great singer, then by all means he should sing at the wedding. If the bride’s mother is a great cook, then by all means she should attend the catering tastings. The bride and groom just need to make sure everyone is aware of who is doing what. That way, should the green-eyed monster come calling, they can deal with it right then and there, long before their big day. Traditionally, adoptive and/or biological parents’ wishes supersede stepparents’ wishes. However, that does not have to be the case, particularly if the bride or groom is close to a stepparent. The bride’s stepfather may have raised her from an infant and feel he has earned the right to walk her down the aisle. The bride might agree, but before extending the offer, she should discuss it with her biological father first. She should express her feelings on the matter and be prepared to make a compromise. Perhaps her father could escort her into the church while her stepfather walks her down the aisle. Or, perhaps they could both accompany her down the aisle. What bride wouldn’t feel extra special with a father on each side. The bride and groom should do their best to accommodate their parents’ wishes. However, it is not their duty to ensure that all 10 parents get exactly what they want. Parental demands can get out of control, and when they do, the bride and groom need not acquiesce. It is their wedding after all, not their parents’. No matter what the nature of the relationship or how demanding parents may be, the bride and groom should always respect them. Wedding planning is stressful enough without adding familial tensions. The bride and groom should try to keep tension at bay by listening to what the parents have to say and being respectful of their feelings. That’s right. Parents have feelings. While they might all love the bride and groom, they might not all love each other. The bride and groom should understand that and establish boundaries where necessary. If the adoptive mother and biological mother do not get along, there is no reason to insist they host the couples shower together. Each of them could host a shower, or one could host the shower and the other the post-wedding brunch. Dealing with two sets of parents soon to be inlaws is hard enough without adding adoptive parents and stepparents to the mix. Brides and grooms in the situation should relax, follow the tips above and respect their parents’ wishes within reason. By Tresa Erickson summer bridal $ 1595 011923

Page 32 HAPPENINGS June 22, 2023 www.hap2it.com June 22, 2023 through June 28, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19) Even fairy tale protagonists can face deadlines and hard work to reach their happily ever after. You may need to remain focused on more menial chores for the time being in order to highlight your talents and skills. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): It may be best to put expensive purchases or riskier investments to the side for now. Seemingly sure things could easily fall apart if undertaken without first thoroughly researching all possible outcomes. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Relationships could hit a few snags if promises or commitments are not honored, it may be best to avoid making important ones for now. Remain optimistic but noncommittal until you know you can follow through. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Try to give friends the benefit of the doubt. Joining in on group activities may be a welcome distraction from possible surprises that could compromise your efforts or cause a temporary setback in your plans.. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You can work hard without becoming a workaholic. Earn some kudos and get some financial rewards for being persistent and enthusiastic. Try not to be waylaid by daydreams when you should be doing something else. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): This could be a great time to declutter and clean up your living space. You may be able to unearth some great business ideas that can be put to effective use while putting any unnecessary policies away. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Challenging opinions can result in a misunderstanding or conflicts; it is often best to not put more fuel on the fire. You might not always agree with someone, but they could still have the best of intentions at heart. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Newfound acquaintances could be there to lend a helping hand or bring a new moneymaking opportunity your way. An idea that has been sitting in the back of your mind could spell success downstream in the material world. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Even if a loved one starts to have doubts, do your best to remain optimistic and enthusiastic. You may feel thrown off by someone’s whirlwind of emotions but do your best to remain fair and understanding. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You may find that some policies or tactics have outlived their usefulness and you may want to replace them with something more sensible. Ambitions can be pursued without making major changes to your work habits. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Many of life’s pleasures can cost you little to nothing. A lack of funds might not be solved just by opening a new bank or credit account but making small financial changes could add up in the long run. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Sometimes life may seem full of disappointments, or you could feel you are not living up to your own expectations. Loved ones and self-love can remind you that the totality of your life is not lessened by passing setbacks.
