Page 4 HAPPENINGS August 10, 2023 www.hap2it.com In the Disney+ original movie, The Slumber Party, a trio of teenage girls have an adventure retracing the steps of their slumber party. Stars Darby Camp, 16, and Emmy Liu-Wang, 16, told UPI how they pulled off the film's comical stunts. The morning after a hypnotist (Titus Burgess) performs at the party, Megan (Camp) cannot remember why she's missing an eyebrow. Fortunately, Camp did not have to shave it in real life. "It was a prosthetic that they would put on top and then use makeup to blend it in," Camp said in a Zoom interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. "There was some talk," Camp said. "People were like, 'Why can't she actually shave her eyebrows instead of having to do makeup?' Some other people, too, were like, 'I don't think a teenage girl's going to want to shave her eyebrows.'" Camp and Paige (Liu-Wang) also compete in an onion eating contest that may hold a clue to the whereabouts of Anna Maria (Valentina Herrera), missing since the slumber party. Camp said that for wide shots, the production carved peeled apples to look like onions. "For our close-ups, they were sadly real onions," Camp said. Liu-Wang, for whom Slumber Party is only her first movie -- after the sitcom, Raven's Home -- learned too late that she did not have to swallow the onions. "After a few of the takes, one of our ensemble [actors] was like, 'You know there are spit buckets under the table, right?'" Liu-Wang said. "And I was like, 'You know what? I didn't know that, but thank you for telling me.'" Liu-Wang said some closeup shots still required her to swallow in the same take in which she bit a raw onion. In another sequence, Megan, Paige and Veronica (Alex Cooper Cohen) ride a high school athletic mascot. The hedgehog is on wheels and rolls out of control down a hill with the three girls on top of it. "It felt to me like a roller coaster," Liu-Wang said. Camp said Cohen and LiuWang got strapped into the hedgehog for safety. Camp herself sat atop the hedgehog wearing a seatbelt. "It felt like it was going a lot faster than it did," Camp said. "It felt a lot faster when we were actually on the hedgehog." Megan has an embarrassing mishap even before the slumber party begins. Her dress gets caught in a car door and ripped off. Camp said this stunt was achieved by wearing a velcro dress and attaching it to a truck by rope. Because Megan, Paige and Veronica forget what the hypnotist made them do at the slumber party, they don't learn that until the end of the movie. They find a cell phone video the girls recorded while under a trance the night before. Camp and Liu-Wang said the video was recorded on an actual cell phone, and they got to improvise the silly slumber party scenes. "They had this big box light on top of the phone and it looked really funny," Camp said. "So they could get the perfect lighting, but still make it look natural." Liu-Wang said the improv felt like they were being themselves. "I didn't even feel like we were acting or in character," Liu-Wang said. "It was just us going insane and that was one of the funnest parts of the movie to shoot." Having only appeared in Disney's sitcom and movie, LiuWang said she already has learned the differences between studio sitcom acting and film acting on location. Liu-Wang said she is excited for whatever the next steps in her career may be. "I'm pretty much open to anything," Liu-Wang said. "I think anything could happen and I'm excited for what will." Camp has already been acting for 10 years, including dramatic roles on The Leftovers, Grey's Anatomy, NOS4A2 and Big Little Lies. She also has acted in familyfriendly movies like The Christmas Chronicles and Clifford the Big Red Dog. "I honestly don't really have a preference," Camp said. "I love doing both." Camp said she feels the appeal of The Slumber Party is not limited only to kids. "It's not even a kid movie," Camp said. "It's more of a family movie that I think adults can enjoy, too. I loved getting to do all the action-adventure." By Fred Topel From left to right, Alex Cooper Cohen, Darby Camp and Emmy Liu-Wang star in the Disney+ original film "The Slumber Party." www.hap2it.com August 10, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 5 Bath to the Future The benefits of bathing have long been appreciated, despite colorful depictions of past cultures and predecessors literally wallowing in their aversion to hygiene. Egyptians were known for their cleanliness. Babylonians invented a form of soap; ancient Greeks created a kind of shower. Romans favored public baths. In a recent paper reexamining medieval urban sanitation, the reputation of public bathhouses gets a sprucing up, with the authors noting that they were places that not only provided a cleansing experience, but also promoted emerging public health policies. Bathhouses in the late Middle Ages across Europe provided visitors with a chance to be seen by a "bader," a licensed practitioner skilled at lancing abscesses, pulling teeth, cupping and bloodletting. Steam rooms and mineral baths were touted as ways to alleviate ailments, from scabies and leprosy to migraines and miscarriages. One could buy medicinal herbal concoctions. The medical establishment opposed the businesses of baders, who were cheaper, but bathhouses held a strong social place in communities (in part because they were places to socialize) until contagions such as the bubonic plague, smallpox and syphilis made crowded spaces places to avoid. By the time those infectious scourges were addressed, baths and showers were appearing in private homes and traipsing off to a public bathhouse was no longer quite so appealing, regardless of the sparkling conversation. Galvanic Response Researchers have tested, with success, a self-charging, implantable battery that essentially sucks oxygen from tumors, making them more vulnerable to destruction. Cancer tumors often outgrow their blood supply, leaving some malignant cells oxygen-deprived. Perversely, this condition, known as hypoxia, can stimulate further mutations that make the cells resistant to cancer therapies. But that difference also distinguishes them from healthy cells. In mouse studies, researchers implanted into tumors a tiny, selfcharging battery that consumes oxygen. That spurred cancer cells to respond and also to paint a bigger target on themselves for drugs that are activated in lowoxygen conditions. Two weeks after implantation, researchers reported the batteries had shrunk tumors in mice by 26%. Get Me That, Stat! The rising popularity of pickleball (a combination of tennis, table tennis and badminton played on a smallish court) appears to be increasing the popularity of emergency rooms too. CNN reports that estimated pickleball-related injuries will cost the U.S. health care system roughly $377 million this year. That breaks down to 67,000 ER visits, 366,000 outpatient visits and 9,000 outpatient surgeries. The reason: Most pickleball devotees tend to be older (8 in 10 players are 60-plus) and the most common injuries are damage to arms, wrists or ankles, usually sprains or strains to ligaments or tendons. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself." — Comedian Johnny Carson (1925- 2005) Medical History This week in 2000, a man in Israel became the first recipient of the Jarvik 2000, the first total artificial heart that can maintain blood flow and generate a pulse. The first Jarvik heart transplant occurred in 1982. Curtain Calls On Dec. 1, 1135, King Henry I of England reportedly consumed too many lampreys against his physician's advice. Although part of the excitement of watching sports is that we never know what will happen, the experts have weighed in and are predicting that the Packers, the Bears, and even the NFC North as a whole, will be having a rougher than usual year. In Green Bay, the Aaron Rodgers era is over. After a drawn out process, the four-time MVP quarterback was traded to the Jets, paving the way for Jordan Love, a 2020 first-round pick who’s appeared in just 10 games, to start. Love will be leading an offense that took a major step back last season after the Davante Adams trade and lost its leading receiver, Allen Lazard. Still, there’s talent in place at the skill positions and the front office added receiver Jayden Reed and tight ends Tucker Craft and Luke Musgrave in the second and third rounds of the draft. TheLionshaven’t won their division since 1993 when the NFC North was the NFC Central. But, according to numerous experts, Detroit has the best odds to win its division for the first time in three decades thanks in large part toRodgers’ exit creating a power vacuum, even though it was theVikingswho came in first last season. Aside from the Lions, the other three teams have all hung NFC North banners within the last five years, even theBears, who had the worst record in the NFL in 2022. 1. Kansas City Chiefs 2. www.hap2it.com August 10, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 11 Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty introduced Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson in the actors' first leading roles on screen. Isaiah and Hughes said that Season 2, airing on HBO and streaming on MAX, explores the NBA players' accomplishments and setbacks in the early '80s. For Johnson, a knee injury in 1981 sidelined the rookie in his second playing season. Isaiah said his portrayal of the injury was a little too convincing for some of the cast and crew. "It's funny because even after I got up, in some takes, I was still limping," Isaiah said in a Zoom interview before the SAG-AFTRA strike. "People were like, 'Are you alright?'" Abdul-Jabbar had been playing for the Los Angeles Lakers since 1975 and was named MVP before Johnson joined the team in 1980. Hughes said Season 2 shows Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson on the road to harmony, but they're not there yet. "I think we see the relationship mature for sure," Hughes said. "I think it's inevitable in any relationship. You're always working out the kinks." Johnson's whirlwind success led to endorsement deals. Season 2 recreates a 7UP billboard with Isaiah posing like Johnson. "That was a long day, but it was cool just being able to take pictures with the 7UP can," Isaiah said. Season 1 of Winning Time showed Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) buying the team and the Lakers winning the 1980 championship. However, the 1981 season would not be a repeat. Winning Time co-creator Max Borenstein said Season 2 explores how that victory gave the Lakers a false sense of security. "We're telling the story not just of a team that won one championship, but a team that became a dynasty," Borenstein said. "The challenge is how can you carry forward toward a dynasty after having won a championship when it would now be easy to rest on your laurels?" While Season 1 focused on Buss and Johnson's first year with the Lakers, Season 2 covers 1981 to 1984, culminating in the sevengame finals between the Lakers and Boston Celtics. "Dealing with the ups and the downs takes more than one season," writer-producer Rodney Barnes said. "They have to go through a process to be able to overcome themselves to be able to overcome this obstacle that is the Celtics." Both Hughes and Isaiah trained for Season 1 to be able to recreate the historic plays of Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson on the court. Hughes said playing like Abdul-Jabbar became instinctive by Season 2, but recreating the Celtics finals still proved challenging. Game 5 of those finals included 97-degree temperatures inside the Boston Garden, which did not have air conditioning. Hughes said Winning Time recreates that game, and the Lakers fans rioting after Game 7. "One of the games in the series, people were passing out," Hughes said. "When the crowd storms the floor, the contrast is of the Celtics celebrating the championship and the Lakers are like fighting for their lives." Director and executive producer Salli Richardson-Whitfield directed many episodes that recreated historic Lakers games. She directed the season finale with the riot, and also the episodes in which Laker Kevin McHale clotheslines Celtic Kurt Rambis and in which Abdul-Jabbar set the scoring record in 1984. "There's more basketball," Richardson-Whitfield said of the second season. "There's more energy in the show." Richardson-Whitfield and cinematographer Todd Banhazi also brought new filmmaking techniques to intensify the basketball footage. RichardsonWhitfield said Banhazi added video footage to reflect televised NBA coverage transitioning to videotape. Executive producer Kevin Messick revealed another new technique that was purely Banhazi's invention. "We had a remote control camera car this season," Messick said. "So as the players are running plays up and down, in between their feet and around their ankles is a point of view that you would never get that brings you inside the plays." Hughes remembered stepping around the mobile camera on the court. He also coordinated with cameramen wearing roller skates. "Everything had to be in sync so that they could capture the move at the specific time," Hughes said. "It was a big challenge, but it was also obviously very rewarding when you see the final shots." New episodes of Winning Time air Sundays at 8 p.m. on HBO. By Fred Topel 'Winning Time' stars say Season 2 hits Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar’s highs and lows Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Solomon Hughes, L) and Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah) are portrayed in "Winning Time." If you are not a NBA historian, you may wonder why a team from Los Angeles is called the “Lakers” - the team originated as the Minneapolis Lakers in the 1947. In 1960, they relocated to LA and kept the moniker. Led byHall of FamersElgin BaylorandJerry West, Los Angeles made theNBA Finalssix times in the 1960s, but lost every series to the Celtics, beginning theirlong and storied rivalry. In 1968, the Lakers acquired fourtimeNBA (MVP)Wilt Chamberlain, and won their sixth NBA title—and first in Los Angeles—in1972. After the retirement of West and Chamberlain, the team traded for superstarKareem Abdul-Jabbar, who would win three MVP awards as a Laker. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, and have won 17 NBA championships, tied with theBoston Celticsfor the most. After leading the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships during his tenure as head coach from 1989 to 1998, Phil Jackson took on the job of the Lakers head coach in 1999 and led them to five league titles, making Jackson the coach with the most NBA titles (11). Wes Anderson to be honored at Venice Film Festival Asteroid City and The Grand Budapest Hotel writerdirector Wes Anderson is to be honored at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 1. Anderson, 54, will be presented with the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award before a screening of his latest work, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The film starsRalph Fiennes,Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley and Richard Ayoade. "Wes Anderson is one of the few directors whose unique and unmistakable style can be recognized with just one frame. His formal universe harks back to a childlike and visionary aesthetic, dominated by pastel colors and obsessive care in preparing strictly symmetrical sequences populated by misfit dreamers who are incurably romantic and cheerful," the festival's director said in a statement. "From the memorable and poignant soundtracks (often inspired by the 1960s) to the extravagant costumes that reflect the characters' psyche, each detail and the composition of every single shot is painstakingly conceived and masterfully carried out. The worlds the director creates are plausible and yet completely imaginary and fictitious, buttressed by surreal humor and a disconcerting taste for the vicissitudes of maladjusted families, absent fathers and imperturbable mothers. Eccentric and highly idiomatic cinema that is always perfectly entertaining and enjoyable." Anderson's other films includeBottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Darjeeling Limited and Isle of Dogs. movie news WEEKEND BOX OFFICE REPORT August 4th - 6th, 2023 1. Page 14 HAPPENINGS August 10, 2023 www.hap2it.com Bear escapes crate in cargo hold of Iraqi Airways plane The prime minister of Iraq ordered an investigation after a bear being transported in the cargo hold of an Iraqi Airways plane escaped from its crate at Dubai International Airport. Iraqi Airways issued an apology after passengers who arrived in Dubai from Baghdad were delayed by the bear's escape inside the plane's cargo hold. The airline contacted United Arab Emirates authorities and a specialist team arrived at the airport to sedate the bear. The plane was not damaged and successfully made the return flight to Baghdad, officials said. The airline did not reveal why it was transporting a bear to the UAE or who received the animal. It said international animal welfare guidelines were followed in the bear's transport. Flu deaths spike after cities get professional sports stadiums U.S. cities that gained pro teams between 1962 and 2016 saw increased influenza deaths of up to 24% after the teams arrived, according to the researchers. The study included an analysis of Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League teams. The average increase in flu deaths was 17% when NFL teams moved to cities that had never had pro sports teams before, the analysis showed. That was about 13 additional deaths each year. When an NBA team moved in, flu deaths increased by 4.7%. MLB had the smallest impact, with three additional deaths each year. However, the NHL had the largest impact, with a 24.6% increase in flu deaths per 100,000 people. That was about 20 more flu deaths per year in each city. "As for why hockey is so deadly, we believe it is both the timing of the season and location of the teams," said researcher Jane Ruseski, a professor at the John Chambers College of Business and Economics. "The NHL season overlaps almost perfectly with the flu season, and NHL teams are more likely to be in colder cities." Riley Keough shares baby girl's name Riley Keough is sharing her baby girl's name. The 34-year-old actress announced the name of her daughter with her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, in the September issue of Vanity Fair. Keough and Smith-Petersen welcomed their daughter via surrogate in August 2022. The couple named their baby girl Tupelo Storm. In the interview, Keough said Tupelo is a reference to Tupelo, Miss., the birthplace of her grandfather Elvis Presley, while Storm is a tribute to her late brother, Benjamin Storm Keough. "It's funny because we picked her name before the Elvis movie," Keough said, referencing Baz Luhrmann's biopic Elvis. "I was like, 'This is great because it's not really a well-known word or name in relation to my family -- it's not like Memphis or something. Then when the Elvis movie came out, it was like, Tupelo this and Tupelo that. I was like, 'Oh no.' But it's fine." Keough is the daughter of late singer Lisa Marie Presley and Danny Keough and the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley. Her brother Benjamin Keough died at age 27 in July 2020, while Lisa Marie Presley died at age 54 in January. Keough most recently starred in the Prime Video series Daisy Jones & the Six. She will next star in the Hulu crime drama Under the Bridge, based on the Rebecca Godfrey novel. Air pollution may contribute to antibiotic resistance, study suggests Doctors who overprescribe antibiotics are often blamed for medication-resistant illnesses, but new research points to another potential culprit: air pollution. Controlling air pollution could reduce antibiotic resistance, greatly reducing deaths and economic costs, according to a new in-depth global analysis were published Monday in The Lancet Planetary Health.. Some potential pathways include hospitals, farms and sewage-treatment facilities that emit and spread antibiotic-resistant particles through the air and across distances, the study found. Evidence suggests air pollution contributes to the spread of this antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the study. Sources of air pollution called PM2.5 include industrial processes, road transportation and domestic coal and wood burning. Maryland man's three lottery prizes in a row end with $50,000 jackpot A Maryland man scored three lottery prizes in a row from scratchoff tickets, with the last prize being worth $50,000. The 64-year-old man told officials he stopped into a gas station in Poolesville and bought a scratch-off ticket that earned him a $50 prize. "The $50 bought the first $30 game," the man said of selecting a $2M Gold Rush ticket. "I won $30. I said, 'Give me another one,' and I won 50 grand!" The man told lottery officials he didn't make a scene when he revealed the big prize, electing to instead quietly put the ticket away and leave the store. The winner said he plans to put his prize money into savings for the time being and hasn't told anyone about his win except for his wife. coast to coast U.S. credit card debt passed $1 trillion for first time For the first time since it began keeping records, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said that U.S. consumers are carrying a collective $1 trillion in credit card debt. The New York Fed said credit cards were the largest, single source of consumer debt, increasing by $45 billion during the second quarter to stand at $1.03 trillion. "After a sharp contraction in the first year of the pandemic, credit card balances have seen seven quarters of year-over-year growth," the bank's report read. "The second quarter of 2023 saw a brisk 16.2% increase from the previous year, continuing this strong trend." The report masks what would otherwise be seen as positive news for the U.S. economy, the world's largest. The Conference Board in its final report for July said consumer confidence was at its highest level in two years, recording two consecutive monthly gains. Consumer-level inflation, meanwhile, is down sharply from year-ago levels, though Moody's Investor Service put several banks on notice and warned of a mild recession for the U.S. economy. Higher lending rates, meant to curb inflation, are making borrowing more prohibitive, however. But borrowing and high credit card balances are just one of the concerns. "Delinquency rates have now returned to pre-pandemic levels," the New York Fed noted. Lowerincome households saw the brunt of the pressure earlier this year. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, included emergency allotments under provisions enacted in March 2020, just as the spread of COVID-19 was entering the pandemic stage. Those allotments ended March 1. The U.S. Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimated the average individual recipient saw SNAP support decline by $90 a month and as much as $250 in some cases. Page 26 HAPPENINGS August 10, 2023 www.hap2it.com August 10, 2023 through August 16, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Managing your money can look different for everyone, but responsibility should take precedence over pleasures. Pay your bills and stay on top of any financial obligations and you could find the stability you may need. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Sometimes changing your mind can cause hurt feelings. Forgiveness could be granted if you take the time to ask for it. Listen, explain and apologize for whatever misunderstandings might have occurred in the past. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Be careful how you phrase things if you must discuss a friend or family member’s project. They may trust you and care about what you think. Approval can be more meaningful than you expect so remember to remain kind. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Sorry may not always be enough. There might be things that you have done that you need to make amends for. Not just for the other person, but to clear your own heart. Find the best way to restore balance for yourself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): If a metaphoric cake is placed in front of you, the whole thing could feel like a reasonable portion. Others seated at the same table may be longing for a piece so you’ll need to accept a smaller slice and compromise. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Now may be the time to sift through your contacts and strengthen your connections. A time might come soon when you need to make an important call and if you do not have the number, you could be left out in the rain. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): This may not be the time to stray away from your usual paths. Some plans that you have might need to be put aside for a while until things have settled and you can give your full attention to your current project. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Sometimes opportunity avoids the door completely and comes quietly tapping on your window. It may not always be precise, but it can be ready for whoever finds it. It could be up to you to realize what is waiting for you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Even the fortunate few who seem good at everything may not have the time to do it all themselves. If you can spread the work out across the team, then everyone could complete their specialty and get the job done on time. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Connecting with people outside your regular circle might pay unexpected dividends if you have an emergency later. It could come down to who you know. Being connected to a network could be beneficial if a favor is needed. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You might have been working away on a temporary thing while you wait for something better to come along.
