I am proud to highlight themomentum we continue to buildas a community, from events thatbring us together to major investments shaping our future. One of the events I am mostexcited about is the second annual Eric Olson Memorial St.Patrick’s Day Parade, scheduledfor 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14,2026. After drawing tens of thousands of visitors to downtownKenosha in its inaugural year, thiscelebration of Irish heritage andcommunity spirit is quickly becoming a beloved tradition. The parade will step off at 50thStreet and Seventh Avenue andproceed south on Sixth Avenue toLibrary Park. I am grateful to ourpartners at Visit Kenosha and theLakeshore Business ImprovementDistrict for helping present thisevent and showcase the energy ofour downtown. Community groups, businessesand residents are invited to participate with floats, marchingbands, dance groups and otherentertainment. Parade applications are available through myoffice or on the City of Kenoshaevents page, with a deadline ofFeb. 13, 2026. Kenosha’s growthis also on full display along ourlakefront with the opening of theKarrick apartment complex, thefirst major development in thenine-block Kenosha HarborDistrict. City officials, project partners and new residentsrecently joined me to celebratethis milestone investment. Karrick is a five-story apartmentcommunity with 158 residentialunits and a full amenity deck, made possible after the removalof a long-vacant bank building. This development represents animportant step forward in theHarbor District’s estimated $450million transformation and reflectsour commitment to thoughtful, forward-looking growth. I am also proud to share thatRealtor.com has ranked Kenoshaas the nation’s hottest housingmarket for December 2025. Thisrecognition speaks to the strongdemand for housing in our city, the quality of life we offer and theconfidence families and investorshave in Kenosha’s future. This national recognition reflectsthe dedication of our city staff, theinnovation of our local businessesand the commitment of majormanufacturers that call Kenoshahome. Our housing initiatives, from expanding options to supporting affordability, are making a real difference. That work includes the launch ofthe Home Kenosha – AffordableLiving, Neighborhood RevivalProgram, a new initiative designedto expand affordable homeownership and reinvigorate neighborhoods across the city. Through apublic-private partnership supported by a $3 million contribution from Uline and matchingcity funds, Home Kenosha willhelp make homeownership moreattainable for hardworking familieswhile strengthening neighborhoods for generations to come. As we build on a proud 175-yearlegacy of industry, resilience andcommunity, I invite residents andvisitors alike to take part in theevents, investments and opportunities that continue toshape our great city. Together, we are building a citythat honors its past while confidently moving toward thefuture. By Mayor David F. Music straight from HavenThere are some people in Downtown Kenosha whodon’t just run a business — they quietly changelives. Haven B. Fair is one of those people.Haven taught in KUSD and Harmony Music School, working with hundreds of students across grade levels. Those experiences shaped her empathy — notjust for students, but for parents and educators navigating a system that isn’t always built for everylearner.Haven’s journey as an educator spans publicschools, private instruction, and now her own independent studio, the Havenly Arts Studio at 705 50thStreet. Here, lessons are personalized, flexible, andhuman-centered. Her focus is on piano, voice, guitar, bass, ukulele, drums, strings, and brass.Haven saw clear gaps in traditional music education:rigid performance expectations, limited inclusivity, and environments that unintentionally push somestudents out. Havenly Arts Studio was built to counter that.Haven’s long-term vision is simple and powerful: toforever be an outlet for the outcasts. She wantsevery student to leave knowing that failure is part ofthe process — and that finding your own sound is farmore important than sounding like anyone else.Every eight weeks, Haven hosts a Student Spotlight, giving students a chance to perform in a relaxed, supportive environment. These aren’t high-pressurerecitals — they’re celebrations.Parents gather. Students cheer for each other.Confidence grows.Haven sees it clearly: when students have a goal towork toward, their dedication increases. Practicebecomes meaningful. Music becomes shared.Choosing Downtown Kenosha wasn’t accidental.Haven has always lived near Lake Michigan andsees downtown as a natural meeting point — geographically and culturally. Between lessons, shewalks the streets, connects with neighboring businesses, and builds relationships that turn into collaboration. To Haven, the arts are essential to downtown vitalitybecause they bring diversity — of age, genre, background, and experience.Beyond teaching, Haven performs as Miss B Haven, blending alternative jazz, funk, and soul, and drumswith the nationally touring band Would You Kindly? Her years of classical training, open mic experiences, and songwriting journey all inform how sheteaches today.Students benefit from her real-world experience —from Summerfest stages to touring stories — andfrom seeing what’s possible when passion becomesa lifestyle. It’s clear how far she’s come — and how deeplyrooted her work is in this community.Haven hopes to expand into songwriting workshops, looper pedal sessions, and new creative offerings. But she embraces the unknown. As she puts it, she never knows who will walkthrough her door next — or how music will continueto shape her life. And she’s happy to be here.Story and photos by Donny Stancato, Visit KensohaPage 18 Downtown Kenosha 2026, Vol. 19 Issue #1 #godowntownkenosha Online at Hap2it.com

The Orpheum Theatre has stoodat the heart of downtown Kenoshafor more than a century. In 1922,Kenosha would gain a true “moviepalace” that reflected both civicambition and cultural pride. Thatambition was largely driven bybrothers Edward and Fred Dayton, prominent local businessmen. After Edward returned from WorldWar I, he believed Kenosha needed major institutions—a luxuryhotel and a world-class theater—to compete with Milwaukee andChicago. Though their hotel plans initiallystalled, the Daytons reentered thetheater business and, with partners, built the Orpheum Theatre ata cost of $400,000. It opened onMarch 14, 1922, dazzling audiences with a lavish FrenchRenaissance interior that contrasted sharply with its modest exterior.Gold accents, velvet drapes, silkwallpaper, and a $20,000 Bartonorgan made the OrpheumKenosha’s first true movie palace. From the start, the Orpheum positioned itself as both a cultural andmoral force. Management promised family-friendly programmingand emphasized modern ventilation systems in the wake of therecent Spanish flu pandemic. Theopening night featured the U.S.debut of Smiling Through, and thetheater soon hosted silent films, vaudeville, roadshows, and latersound pictures. By 1924, the Orpheum buildingwas described as “a veritable cityin itself,” housing shops, offices, studios, and services alongsidethe theater. Ownership and management shifted repeatedly overthe decades. Fox Theaters brieflyrenamed it the Lake Theatre, butthe Orpheum name returned in1933 with a lavish gala completewith celebrity impersonators. Through the 1940s and 1950s, theOrpheum adapted to changingtastes, hosting talent competitions, special promotions, celebrityappearances, and communityevents—even as television begandrawing audiences away. Creativegimmicks, from free kitchen utensils to midnight “Voodoo Parties,”were used to keep seats filled. By the 1960s, downtown Kenoshafaced broader challenges. Trafficchanges, youth culture, and suburban shopping centers threatenedtraditional businesses. Longtimemanager Wallace Konrad becamea vocal advocate for downtownvitality before retiring in 1967. Despite successful runs like TheSound of Music, the theaterincreasingly struggled. Crime incidents, aging infrastructure, andshifts toward adult programmingmarked the late 1960s and early1970s. By 1975, after UnitedArtists stepped away and ownerBernie Chulew purchased thebuilding, the Orpheum closed as amovie theater. New owners continued to seepotential in the Orpheum.Developers rehabilitated storefronts and offices, while community figures kept its spirit alivethrough art shows and events. In1988, a brief but legendary rebirthas a concert venue brought punk, metal, and alternative acts—including the SmashingPumpkins—to its stage, cementingthe Orpheum’s place in localmusic lore. The building endured years ofuncertainty and narrowly escapeddemolition in the early 1990sthanks to preservationists like LouRugani and Merike Phillips.Declared a local landmark in1993, the Orpheum was renovatedand triumphantly reopened in1995 as a budget cinema—thoughthat revival was short-lived, endingin closure by 2000. This is the second part of a two-part series, continued from ourprevious issue St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church(5900 7th Ave)St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church isthe oldest church building inKenosha (built 1872–1879) and afine Gothic Revival limestonestructure with a clock-tower andbattlements.Founded in April 1840, St.Matthew’s Episcopal Church isanother of Kenosha’s pioneer congregations – in fact, it was organized by missionary Bishop JacksonKemper and was the fourthEpiscopal parish established in theentire old Northwest Territory. Theyoung congregation built a smallframe chapel in 1841, originallylocated where the county courthouse stands today. After the CivilWar, as Kenosha grew, theEpiscopalians set their sights on agrander permanent church. Theypurchased a lot adjacent to what isnow Library Park in 1871, at theheart of the city’s 19th-century residential district. Construction of thepresent church began in 1872, todesigns by architect A. H. Ellwoodof Aurora, Illinois, and continued(with some interruptions) for sevenyears.St. Matthew’s church was completed in 1879, making it the oldestsurviving church edifice inKenosha County. Fittingly, the cornerstone of this storied buildingwas laid by Bishop Kemper himself, and the church was consecrated once finished.Architecturally, St. Matthew’s is agem of Gothic Revival design. Thestructure is built from locally-quarried Racine limestone combinedwith Joliet (Illinois) limestone, giving a two-tone gray exterior.Buttresses line the walls, and atthe southeast corner rises asquare bell tower complete with aclock face and louvered belfry.Inside, the church gained a noteworthy Ernest M. Skinner pipeorgan in 1926.Bradford Community ChurchUnitarian Universalist (5810 8thAvenue)At 5810 8th Avenue stands ahandsome red-roofed limestonechurch that has lived several lives.Today it is known as BradfordCommunity Church (UnitarianUniversalist), but it began its life in1907 as Henry M. SimmonsMemorial Church, a Unitarian congregation with a trailblazing pastor. The church’s founding ministerwas Florence Buck, who in 1901became the first woman to serveas a pastor in Kenosha. Buck – agraduate of Meadville TheologicalSchool in Chicago – was instrumental not only in gathering theUnitarian congregation but also indesigning the church building tosuit their liberal Christian worship.Architect N. Max Dunning, aKenosha native, was hired to execute the plans, producing a solidGothic Revival structure of graystone that was completed in 1907.Its features include pointed-archwindows, a crenelated squaretower at one corner, and a heavyrusticated stone exterior – all characteristic of the Gothic style. The congregation thrived in theearly 20th century, but in 1929, theCity of Kenosha purchased thebuilding to convert it into a publiclibrary for children. Renamed theBoys and Girls Library, it openedon April 12, 1929, as Wisconsin’sfirst dedicated children’s library(and only the third such library inthe United States). For the next 50years, this building was filled withbookshelves rather than pews. The library eventually closed in1979 after a new public library wasbuilt. The elegant old building thensaw a period of private ownership:during the 1980s it housed variousrestaurants and nightspots, takingon unexpected new identities evenas its architecture remained intact.Recognition of its historic valuecame in 1980, when it was addedto the National Register of HistoricPlaces under the name “Boys andGirls Library”.In 1993, the story came full circle:Kenosha’s Unitarian Universalistcongregation reacquired the building, restoring it to use as a houseof worship. The congregationrenamed itself BradfordCommunity Church in honor ofeducator Mary. Downtown Kenosha’s steeples of faith: A historical tour of our many churchesstory continues on page 34

Kingdom Word Global ImpactMinistries (5624 6th Avenue)Just a few doors down fromDayBreak, another new congregation has taken root: Kingdom WordGlobal Impact Ministries. KingdomWord is a Pentecostal/charismaticministry led by Pastor David C.Montgomery, who founded thechurch after decades in ministryelsewhere . In the span of a fewyears, Kingdom Word has grownrapidly. By 2022, it had established a second campus inMilwaukee while maintaining itsmain campus in Kenosha, livingup to the “Global Impact” in itsname. The church emphasizes vibrantprayer, “prophetic teaching,” andbelief in “miracles, signs and wonders” as a normal part of contemporary faith.Freedom Worship Ministries(1024 60th Street)A short walk west from SixthAvenue, near Civic Center Park, isFreedom Worship Ministries. Thisindependent church is another relatively recent addition to downtown’s religious scene. It wasfounded and is led by PastorTimias D. Johnson Sr., withAssistant Pastor Patricia A.Hudson as co-founder. FreedomWorship Ministries does not occupy a grand historic sanctuary;instead, it uses a simple building(formerly commercial) to create anintimate space for praise andpreaching. The church holds itsworship services on Sundays at10:30 a.m. in this location, fillingthe downtown streets with gospelmusic each week.As the name suggests, FreedomWorship emphasizes a liberating,Spirit-led approach to church. Itsworship style is often described aslively and passionate, in the veinof modern Pentecostal or nondenominational churches. accessible to anyone in the urban coreseeking a church family. Iglesia La Familia de Dios (520 58th Street)Sharing space in an office buildingon 58th Street is Iglesia LaFamilia de Dios, a Spanish-speaking church whose name means“The Family of God Church. LaFamilia de Dios is a PentecostalChristian congregation servingKenosha’s growing Latino community. The church identifies as“Pentecostés en Kenosha”, indicating its Pentecostal denomination and emphasizing lively, HolySpirit-focused worship.Iglesia La Familia de Dios contributes significantly to downtownKenosha’s faith life today by ministering in Spanish – a reminderthat the city’s religious landscapeis now multilingual and multicultural. The Furnace House of Prayer(520 58th Street, 3rd Floor)On the third floor of the same 58thStreet building, one finds TheFurnace House of Prayer – a verydifferent kind of ministry. TheFurnace (as members often call it)is not a traditional church but aprayer house inspired by theInternational House of Prayermovement. Established in the late2010s, the Furnace House ofPrayer is dedicated to continuousworship and intercessory prayer. Its vision is to “stir a generation tobe catalysts for His presence,”and it provides a space wherepeople from any church (or nochurch) can come to pray, worshipwith music, and seek spiritualrenewal. The ministry’s nameevokes the biblical “prayer furnace” – a place of burning passionfor God.Holy Spirit Community Church(5900 11th Avenue)Holy Spirit Community Church wasstarted in 2003 by three familieswho felt called by God to plant anew church in Kenosha. From thebeginning, they emphasizedreliance on the guidance of theHoly Spirit – even choosing thechurch’s name after much prayerto signify that “this is the Father’schurch” and they would followGod’s lead in all things.Holy Spirit Community Church isnon-denominational, and theatmosphere is intentionally informal and welcoming. Over the pasttwo decades, Holy SpiritCommunity has found its niche as“a small church focused on closerelationships”. The church alsoruns ministries like Bible studies(including a women’s Bible studygroup) and a GriefShare supportprogram for the ereaved, extending its care to the wider community.By Gary Schneebergercontinued from page 32Downtown Kenosha’s churches remind us that the city’s soul istended in many houses – from ornate sanctuaries of stone tohumble rooms above storefronts – yet all are united to guide, uplift, and bring together the community in faith.

From themoment the lights wentup, Downtown wastransformed into aplace where familiesgathered, visitors lingered, and local businesses benefitted fromthe warmth and energythat the season brings— even in the coldestmonths. It was a joy to see families gathered atVeterans Memorial Parkfor the official tree lighting, a moment that captured everything welove about the seasonin Downtown Kenosha. This year’s celebrationfelt even more specialwith a bigger andbrighter holiday treestanding proudly as acenterpiece along thelakefront — a symbol ofthe growth and excitement continuing to buildin our district. But the true showstopper this winter was thespectacular drone lightshow over the harbor.Watching hundreds ofsynchronized dronespaint the night sky withdazzling holidayimagery was a modernmilestone for DowntownKenosha, blending ourhistoric charm with aforward-looking energy. It created a sharedmoment of awe for residents and visitors alike, reminding us thatDowntown can honortradition while alsoembracing bold newexperiences. The holiday lighting display was more thandécor. It was a statement: DowntownKenosha is alive, welcoming, and growing.Initiatives like thesedon’t happen by accident. They happenthrough collaboration —between business owners, sponsors, volunteers, organizatoins, the City of Kenosha, and every resident whochooses to shop, dine, and celebrate locally. On behalf of the BID, Iwant to extend sincerethanks to everyone whohelped make this season possible, especiallyour generous sponsorsand community partners who continue tobelieve in Downtown’sfuture.A Downtown Built onMomentumWinter is often seen asa quieter season, butwhat we experiencedthis year was momentum.Downtown businessesstayed busy. New facesvisited. Families madetraditions here. Andperhaps most importantly, we were reminded that DowntownKenosha is not just adestination — it’s theheart of our community. That momentum carriesus forward.Looking Ahead: St.Patrick’s Day inDowntown KenoshaNow, we look towardone of the most excitingand newer celebrationsof the spring: St.Patrick’s Day.After the success oflast year's event, excitement is high for2026 - this event bringsan incredible sense ofenergy into the district— with music, community pride, local gathering, and an unmistakable spirit of fun. What makes being in business in Downtown Kenosha unique? We are a close knit bunch of businesses downtown, we work together tohelp drive business to each other. What’s good for one is usually good forall. Where do you see Downtown Kenosha 5 years from now?I’m excited to see the new developments and new businesses coming in.In 5 years, the downtown should be booming! Meet the new Lakeshore Business Improvement District board membersThe Kenosha Lakeshore BID was created by the City of Kenosha in 1986 to allow businesses to develop, manage and promote Downtown Kenosha. The BID Board meets on the third Tuesday at theWyndham Garden Hotel in Downtown Kenosha at 8:30am. Meetings are open to the public. With Chuck Nelson, of Rustic Road Brewing Company (pictured at right with wife, Michelle)What motivated you to give up some of your time to serve on the BID board? What motivated me to serve on the BID board was a genuine desire to giveback to the Downtown Kenosha community that has supported our businesses so strongly. As a local business owner, I see firsthand how collaboration, advocacy, and thoughtful planning can make a real difference in the successand vitality of our downtown.Being involved on the BID board allows me to have a voice in shaping a thriving, welcoming environment for both businesses and visitors, while supporting initiatives that strengthen economic growth, community ngagement, and long-term sustainability. It’s important to me to help ensure downtown continues to be a place where small businesses can grow, families can gather, and the community can take pride in where they live and shop.Serving on the BID board feels like a meaningful way to invest time and energy into the future of Downtown Kenosha—supporting not just my ownbusinesses, but the success of our entire downtown district. With Jenni Zoerner, co-woner of Magnolia Bridal Boutique and Station on Sixth (pictured right with husband, Mike)What are some of the goals you hope to achieve as part of the BID board in the next year?I’m really excited about some of the initiatives the BID board is working on—like adding more garbage cans, continuing the BVIP program, and activating alleyways. In a recent survey, many downtown businesses shared that they could use extra support inareas like marketing. One of my personal goals is to help connectbusinesses with the resources they need so our downtown can continue to grow and thrive. What makes being in business in Downtown Kenosha unique?Downtown Kenosha is an exceptional community and a powerfulexample of renewal and growth. The concentration of small, family-owned businesses is unlike any city I’ve ever seen, and the collaboration and support among them make it an ideal place for ourbusiness to thrive. With Jandel Kelly-Tagliapietra, co-owner of Cut Stone Wood-Fired Pizza (pictured with husband Riki, and Hat Trick)

Hello! I’m Abby Huff, a community development specialist withthe City of Kenosha. I’ve beenasked to write this quarterly column and share a few thoughtsand updates with you, so here Iam, happy to be part of the conversation. Before I start offering reflectionsand ideas, I want to share a littleabout where I come from. I grewup in Algona, Iowa, if you haven’theard of it, you’re in good company. It’s a rural north-centralIowa community rooted in agriculture and manufacturing, but italso has a charming historicdowntown filled with character, small shops, and, in my opinion, the best pizza/Mexican restaurant in the Midwest. My dadowned a pharmacy on MainStreet when I was young, whichis probably where my love fordowntowns first took root.I hold a BA in Interior Designand an MFA in HistoricPreservation. Before graduateschool, I ran my own interiordesign business and workedpart-time as both a barista andat an independent bookstore. Those experiences gave me afirsthand understanding of howsmall businesses operate, howmuch they contribute to community life, and why preserving andstrengthening downtown business districts matters so deeply. For the past decade, I’ve workedwith downtowns through theMain Street America framework, and I’m thrilled to bring thatexperience to Kenosha. Thiscommunity captivated me fromthe moment I visited a friendhere in 2023. I remember tellingher, “You live where peoplevacation.” When I was offeredthe position with the city, I askedmyself whether I could truly seea future here, and the answerwas an easy yes. Now, I’m focused on buildingupon the strong foundationKenosha already has. I’m supporting the BID and helpingstrengthen the connectionbetween downtown and city government, with the goal of ensuring Kenosha remains a placewhere both residents and visitorswant to spend time and supportsmall businesses.Looking ahead, 2026 will be asignificant year for the City ofKenosha as we begin updatingthe Comprehensive Plan andrewriting the zoning ordinance. Both efforts will shape thelong-term future of our community, and I’m excited to help inthat work.By Abby HuffFrom the Mind of Abby Huff, a part preservationist, part Downtown hype-woman, all about charming communitiesAbby Huff is the communitydevelopment specialist with the City of KenoshaLook Who’s Downtown!
