Page 4 HAPPENINGS December 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan, co-stars of the new vacation comedy, The Family Plan, describe very different experiences when asked about real-life road trips they have taken. "My dad was a truck driver and, so, him and my mom would sit up in the front in the cab, and the rest of us would be in the freezer portion of the truck, no seat belts -- maybe somebody would have a milk crate to sit on," Wahlberg, who was the youngest of nine children, said in a Zoom interview. "There were no windows, obviously. We'd just be bouncing around back there," the 52-year-old actor said. "Very, very memorable, even when I got left at the amusement park or lost at the lake. All still very memorable." The father of four hasn't taken his own kids on many road trips, however. "The most we can keep them in the car is two, three hours before there is some sort of meltdown," he joked. Monaghan, 47, said she camped every summer with her family when she was growing up. "Those are some of my fondest memories as a child, just being in that car -- it was a Suburban that we had -- and we always pitched a tent. It was awesome," she said. "Now, as an adult, I take a lot of family road trips, usually not more than five hours [from home], but they are very different," Monaghan said. "There are devices. [The kids] have their ear pods on. I don't feel like it is as connected, even though they love it. I like junk food all over the car and pillows. Now there's just chargers [everywhere]." Directed by Simon Cellan Jones and sharing cinematic DNA with True Lies and National Lampoon's Vacation, The Family Plan is now available to stream on Apple TV+. It follows Wahlberg's Dan Morgan -- a car salesman, devoted husband and father of three -- whose relatively peaceful life is upended when rivals from his secret former life as an assassin discover his location after his picture shows up on social media. The development sends Dan and his unsuspecting family on a road trip from Buffalo, N.Y., to Las Vegas, without using electronic devices such as GPS or cell phones so they can stay off the grid and the bad guys don't find them. Monaghan plays Dan's bored wife, Jessica, while Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby play his teen kids, Nina and Kyle, who have secrets of their own. Twins Iliana and Vienna share the role of toddler Max. Despite the story's extraordinary circumstances, Wahlberg called the movie's depiction of typical family dynamics "really spot-on." "I can't wait to see the movie with an audience and hear people applauding when those phones get flung out the window," he said. "It's one thing to talk about how much fun we had making a movie, but it's great to hear how much fun people have watching the film, how enjoyable and relatable it is for both parents and children." Monaghan said she also saw a lot of truth in the script, acknowledging it is big fun, but also had a lot of smart things to say about marriage and parenthood. "It felt so real and had so much heart to it, but then it made me laugh out loud," she said. "It was honestly the easiest 'yes' to want to be a part of it and, certainly, to get the opportunity to work with Mark again," she said of her former Patriots Day co-star. "We had a blast making it. We really had a wonderful dynamic between the entire cast and the kids." The movie has numerous action sequences from Jess kickboxing and doing a keg stand while guzzling beer on a college campus tour to Dan taking out the assassins before they get him. "I like to dabble in a lot of different genres, and this film afforded me the opportunity to dip into a lot of them -- the comedy, the action," Monaghan said. "It provides a lot of color and depth for a character," she added. "I was excited to get to do all of it." By Karen Butler 'Family Plan:' Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan have different road-trip memories Mark Wahlberg & Michelle Monaghan stars in the new Apple TV film “The Family Plan” Born Michelle Lynn Monaghan March 23, 1976 (age 47) Winthrop, Iowa After growing up in a very small town, Monaghan moved to Chicago to study journalism after high school. On television, Monaghan starred as Maggie in the first season of the HBO anthology crime drama “True Detective,” for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe. Loneliness and Parkinson's Disease Increasingly, loneliness is being linked to a host of medical conditions and diseases. The latest is the neurological disorder Parkinson's disease. A new study found that even after accounting for confounding factors such as physical and mental health and sociodemographic differences, loneliness was deemed to boost the risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Researchers said impaired metabolic, inflammatory and neuroendocrine pathways might be a reason. Define 'Infertility' Until recently, an official diagnosis of infertility was characterized as the inability of heterosexual couples to conceive a child after trying for a year while having intercourse without protection. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine has expanded the definition to include, but not be limited to, "the use of donor gametes or donor embryos in order to achieve a successful pregnancy either as an individual or with a partner." The change reflects evolving perceptions in society and infertility medicine. "What we're really trying to do is to acknowledge the reality that there are multiple reasons why patients may need medical intervention in order to build their families," said Sean Tipton at ASRM. "It also could be that someone is single or is partnered with someone who is of the same sex as they are, and those people deserve access every bit as much as anybody else." Body of Knowledge By the age of 60, it's estimated that 40% of women and 60% of men will snore. Snoring becomes more common with age because upper airway muscles lose tone, weight gain impairs air passage and alcohol and medications may exacerbate the issue. The loudest snore recorded measured approximately 111.6 decibels, or the equivalent of a jet flying over your bed. Food for Thought Activated charcoal is charcoal created by combining high temperature with a gas or activating agent to expand the charcoal's surface area. It's used to color food black (for dramatic effect) and as a purported health ingredient because activated charcoal binds with almost any compound and thus is touted to promote digestive health, reduce cholesterol and eliminate impurities from the body. That binding, however, isn't particularly discerning. While activated charcoal is used as a remedy for some ingested poisons, it can also bind to foods and block absorption of nutrients or medications, which is a serious consideration when precise drug dosages are essential. Best Medicine Roses are red, violets are blue I'm schizophrenic, and so am I. Hypochondriac's Guide Geographic tongue is an inflammatory but harmless condition in which the tongue's surface, covered with papillae or taste buds, exhibits raised patches of seemingly missing papillae. The resulting patterns can move around, sort of like palate tectonics. Geographic tongue does not cause health issues. It's not related to infection or cancer. The cause is unknown but may be associated with other immune system-related conditions, such as psoriasis. The condition may continue for days, months or years. It often goes away on its own, though it may recur. There is no specific treatment. Observation "Everyone should have a few bad habits so he'll have something he can give up if his health fails." — American writer Franklin P. Jones (1908-1980) Medical History This week in 1827 in the city of Boston, the School Committee voted to require that public school students show that they had been vaccinated against smallpox prior to school entrance. Certificates to the board of health were to be issued where necessary for free vaccination. The initiative came just three decades after Edward Jenner's discovery of a method to immunize against smallpox. Massachusetts passed the first statewide school vaccination law in 1855, followed by New York (1862) and Connecticut (1872). Page 6 HAPPENINGS December 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com World War I, once heralded as “the war to end all wars,” ended on Nov. 11, 1918, which is why we (and many other countries) celebrate veterans on this day. Many millions died during the horrific war of 1914 to 1918. The battlefields of Verdun in France provide a poignant tribute to the 800,000 casualties suffered there. Verdun is in northeastern France, not far from the Champagne region, in a strategic location between Paris and the German border. In 1916, after two years of trench warfare, the Germans decided to strike a powerful knockout punch at the heart of the French defense; it would demoralize the enemy and force a quick surrender. They decided that Verdun would be the perfect target since it was almost surrounded, but the French fought to the bitter end. France eventually prevailed, but at a terrible cost. Just over a century later, soft, forested lands hide the memories of World War I’s longest battle, which raged here for more than 300 days. It’s difficult to imagine today’s lush terrain as it was generations ago...a gray, treeless, crater-filled landscape, smothered in mud and littered with shattered stone. But the countryside still has its memories. Millions of live bombs are scattered in vast cordoned-off areas; it’s not unusual for French farmers or hikers to be injured by until-nowunexploded mines. The town of Verdun is not your destination, but a starting point for your visit to the nearby battlefields. A good plan is to drive a car or ride in a taxi through the eerie moguls surrounding the town, stopping at melted-sugarcube forts and plaques marking spots where villages once existed. For most travelers, a half-day is enough, though historians could spend days here. Concentrate on three important sights: Mémorial de Verdun, Fort de Douaumont, and L’Ossuaire de Douaumont. Each offers a different perspective on the war. I make a point to visit war cemeteries in my travels. They always seem to come with a healthy dose of God – as if dying for God andr left more than 11 percent of the population of France dead or wounded. You'll come away with a deeper understanding of why to this day, France – and all of Europe – truly comprehends the gravity of war, a feeling shared by the veterans we honor every November 11. By Rick Steves Experiencing the gravity of war at Verdun travel Red roses decorate gravestones in a military cemetery near Verdun, one of World War I's deadliest battlefields. Spanish authorities arrested a group of workers at an airport in the Canary Islands on suspicion of stealing from travelers' suitcases. Spain's national police force Guardia Civil said it arrested 14 airport workers and investigated another 20 on suspicion of stealing 1.95 million euros (around $2.1 million) worth of items from travelers' bags at the Tenerife South Airport. The items include 120 pieces of jewelry, 29 high-end watches, 22 electronic devices, 13,000 euros in cash and a high-end vehicle, according to the statement. Officials said they began the investigation after an increase in complaints filed by passengers about missing items. The alleged perpetrators had a "perfectly structured" criminal group, authorities said, with functions defined in a "hierarchical manner," from selecting the flight, to hiding the stolen goods, to selling them off. They took advantage of their status as airport employees to be able to access passengers' luggage inside the hold and out of sight, police said. The thieves used clothing with hand-made interior seams or their own personal lockers to hide the stolen goods from the airport, the report said. Authorities also are investigating 27 jewelry stores in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which are suspected of buying many of the stolen goods. The U.S. Transportation and Security Administration advises travelers never to put valuable items in a checked bag to prevent them from being stolen. Passengers also can ask a TSA agent to screen them and their valuables in private to maintain security. By Ehren Wynder Spanish police arrest airport workers for stealing from travelers' luggage The U.S. Department of Transportation fined Southwest Airlines $140 million for its operational meltdown last holiday season. The department said the civil penalty was imposed on Southwest for "numerous violations of consumer protection laws" during and after the period that saw the airline 16,900 flights during the 2022 Christmas holiday and into the New Year affecting passengers across the country. "Today's action sets a new precedent and sends a clear message: if airlines fail their passengers, we will use the full extent of our authority to hold them accountable," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. "Taking care of passengers is not just the right thing to do -- it's required, and this penalty should put all airlines on notice to take every step possible to ensure that a meltdown like this never happens again." The Transportation Department said Southwest failed its customers on several fronts last year, including failing to provide adequate customer service assistance, failing to provide prompt flight status notifications, and failing to provide refunds promptly and properly. The department said the civil penalty is 30 times larger than any other DOT penalty for consumer protection violations. Most of the penalty will go toward compensating future Southwest passengers affected by cancelations or significant delays caused by the airline. "The order provides such relief by penalizing Southwest Airlines $140 million and compensating future Southwest passengers impacted by controllable cancellations and significant delays," the department said. The penalty comes on top of the $600 million the department ordered Southwest to pay passengers who faced travel disruptions during the 2022 operational meltdown. Southwest said it has improved its response to customer calls, ticket refunds and expense reimbursement, and flight status notifications that will ease the burden of a future mishap. "We have spent the past year acutely focused on efforts to enhance the customer experience with significant investments and initiatives that accelerate operational resiliency, enhance cross-team collaboration and bolster overall preparedness for winter operations," Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines president and CEO said in a statement. "Our commitment to Customers has been central to our success across our 52-year history and has helped us become one of the world's most admired and trusted airlines." Page 8 HAPPENINGS December 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com Teen does 44 pullups between two moving trucks An Armenian teenager showed off his upper body strength by performing 44 pullups on a bar positioned between two moving trucks. Grigor Manukyan, 18, was awarded the Guinness World Records title for the most consecutive pullups on a bar positioned between two moving trucks when he achieved the feat after training with Roman Sahradyan, a coach with multiple GWR titles of his own. The trucks were required to maintain a speed of at least 3.1 mph during the attempt. Manukyan broke the previous record of 35, which was set in 2022 by Tazio Gavioli, aka The Italian Butterfly. "This record was not difficult for me due to my rigorous training," Manukyan told GWR officials. "I think I could have brought the number up to 50, but I decided to stop at 44 and dedicate my record to the bright memory of the heroes who were martyred in the ill-fated 44-day Artsakh war, in which thousands of Armenians died." Manukyan said he is currently training to take on a similar record for performing pullups from a plane.' NFL suspends Kazee for rest of season The NFL suspended Pittsburgh Steelers safety Damontae Kazee for the rest of the 2023 season for repeated violations of its health and safety rules. Kazee's latest incident occurred in the second quarter of the Steelers' loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Indianapolis. The sevenyear veteran lowered his head and hit Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., delivering a strong blow to his head/neck area as he dove to catch a pass. Kazee was then given a penalty for unnecessary roughness and ejected from the game. Pittman entered the concussion protocol as a result. He did not return. Kazee, who can appeal the suspension, is expected to miss upcoming games against the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens. He also was disqualified from the postseason. Bidens uninjured after car crash A sedan accidentally crashed into President Joe Biden's motorcade in Delaware on Sunday night as he and first lady Jill Biden were leaving his campaign office. The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. in downtown Wilmington, according to the White House press pool, which said the silver sedan slammed into a SUV that was protecting the motorcade at the intersection across the street from his campaign headquarters. Video of the incident circulating online shows Biden emerging from his campaign office and walking to his motorcade while fielding a question from the press pool about polling numbers. A loud bang is then heard in the distance, followed by Secret Service agents seen escorting the president into the vehicle in which Jill Biden had previously entered. According to the press pool, other agents quickly surrounded the sedan and pulled firearms on the driver who held up his hands. The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement that "there was no protective interest associated with this event," meaning that the crash was an accident. "The president's motorcade departed without incident," the service said. Neither Biden was injured in the incident. Wilmington Police Department spokesman David Karas told The New York Times that investigators are working to see "if impairment was a factor" in the crash. Man uses mom's numbers to win $50K A Baltimore man said he used a set of numbers he inherited from his mother to win a $50,000 lottery prize. Andre Jones told officials his mother frequently used the numbers 9-1-5-2 to play Pick 4, and he took over the combination after she died. Jones said he recently decided to try the numbers on Pick 5, adding his own number, a 1, to the end. "I kept having that number in my head and decide it was time to play that number again," he said. The ticket earned Jones a $50,000 prize in the Dec. 11 evening drawing. "I looked at it and was like, 'Wow, I won!' I couldn't believe it," he said. Jones said he doesn't yet know how he will spend his prize money, but he offered some advice to other players: "Just keep playing and don't change up your numbers." Yuletide owl found roosting in family's Christmas tree A Kentucky family's Christmas tree was inside their home for four days before it was discovered to be home to a young owl. Michele White of Lexington said the owl somehow managed to remain undetected in the tree for four days by simply blending in with the branches. Bobby Hayes, owner of Magic Carpet Cleaning, was servicing the home while the family was away when he noticed the branches moving. A closer examination revealed an owl moving through the tree. "It crawled up into the tree further," Hayes said. "It took me several minutes to even find it." Hayes was able to grab the owl and sent a picture to White. "I was shocked. I was so stunned," White said. She said she initially thought Hayes was pranking her with a stuffed animal. coast to coast Oprah Winfrey confirms she added weight-loss medication to regimen Media mogul Oprah Winfrey confirmed that she has used a weight-loss medication to help her shed pounds and get healthy. Winfrey has added the drug to a regimen that includes regular exercise and other lifestyle tweaks. Winfrey told the magazine. Her most recent weight-loss journey began after she had knee surgery in 2021. "I started hiking and setting new distance goals each week. I could eventually hike three to five miles every day and a 10-mile straightup hike on weekends," she said. "I felt stronger, more fit and more alive than I'd felt in years." But that wasn't the only change she made to her life, said Winfrey, who turns 70 in January. "I eat my last meal at 4 o'clock, drink a gallon of water a day, and use the Weight Watchers principles of counting points. I had an awareness of [weight-loss] medications, but felt I had to prove I had the willpower to do it. I now no longer feel that way." After talking with her doctor, who then prescribed a weight-loss drug, "I now use it as I feel I need it, as a tool to manage not yoyoing." She declined to say what drug she is taking, People reported, but the weight-loss drugs Wegovy and Zepbound have recently become wildly popular in the United States. She is now just seven pounds short of her goal weight of 160, but "it's not about the number," she stressed. Instead, she's building on the progress she has made during the two years since her surgery. Grigor Manukyan Oprah Winfrey Joe Biden

www.hap2it.com December 21, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 13 Emmy-winning TV star, restaurateur and cookbook author Lidia Bastianich said the quarter-century she has spent on public television talking about food and showing people how to create Italian cuisine for their families "just flew by." A new special marking the milestone, 25 Years with Lidia: A Culinary Jubilee, premiered last week on PBS and now available to stream for free on the PBS YouTube channel. The hourlong program includes highlights from Bastianich's career, as well as appearances by her lifelong friend Christopher Walken and fellow chefs Jacques Pepin, Geoffrey Zakarian, Mary Sue Milliken and Elizabeth Falkner. "You go over good memories," Bastianich, 76, told UPI in a recent phone interview. "This is my story." Bastianich is happy people are interested in her life and said she gets asked a lot of questions about her childhood and what she thought about America when she first arrived. "This takes the viewers that have been watching me for 25 years on a biographical outline of Lidia," she said. Her immigrant journey from a part of Italy that is now Croatia to arriving in the United States penniless with her family in the 1950s was essential to include in the special, Bastianich said, listing details she wants viewers to know about her. "That I spent two years in a refugee camp in Italy before coming to America. That I came as a 12-yearold refugee to America and how wonderful we were accepted and the opportunities that we got here," she said. She recalled how Catholic Charities helped her family secure housing, food and education when they got to their adopted country. "It's not unlike what's happening today. I wanted to show people, 'You know, if you really take it to heart, if you roll up your sleeves, if you appreciate, and you do the right thing, there's no place like America,'" she said. Working with Walken One of her earliest jobs was working in the New York bakery owned by Walken's father, Paul, a German immigrant, and mother Rosaline, who hailed from Scotland. Every weekend, Bastianich would work at the shop with the teenage Christopher -- who is now 80 with an Oscar and more than 140 screen credits on his resume -- and his two brothers, Kenneth and Glenn. "Until this day, I tease [Christopher]. He was the jelly stuffer for the doughnuts. He was so messy, he would it get all over his hands and whatever and also the father made them deliver the wedding cakes on the weekend. They earned their keep," she said. "But I remember [Christopher] loved the arts and used to go to dancing school and, to me, was amazing, charming that this young kid went to dancing school." When Walken got his big break in the OffBroadway revival of Best Foot Forward with Liza Minelli in 1963, the actor's mother took her to see the show. "I still recall that was a great gift," she said. "And we're still friends." Bastianich didn't have a long-term plan when she began her own career in earnest. At first, she simply used what she knew to make money and help support herself and her family. But she loved cooking and soon noticed the people around her were happy to eat whatever she prepared. "I began to realize that I had knowledge. There was something in the way I cooked that people loved. It came out good! I gave people pleasure. I was nurturing people and that gives you satisfaction," she said. "The rewards that I got back from the people, from my restaurants to begin with, then the books. They were buying the books. Then the television." Julia Child Bastianich's TV career began after the late culinary icon Julia Child came into one of Bastianich's restaurants and fell in love with her risotto. They became friends and Bastianich made guest appearances on Child's French Chef programs. "Within two episodes, which were quite successful, the producer said: 'Lidia, you're pretty good. How about a show of your own?' And [Child] said, 'Lidia, yeah, you do for Italian cuisine what I did for French.' And I felt like if she says so, maybe I could," Bastianich said. Eventually, Bastianich was headlining shows like Lidia's Italy in America, Lidia's Italy, Lidia's Family Table and Lidia's Italian-American Kitchen. "I always say I have the two greatest cultures behind me: Italian and American," she said. "How could you miss?" It's not just that Bastianich is smart and creative in the kitchen, she also comes across as warm and authentic on screen. The chef said she was comfortable being herself and talking to viewers early in her television career. "My mother was a teacher, so maybe teaching and sharing was in our family in a sense," she said. "I love sharing and I love getting emails from people saying: 'I didn't think I could cook, but you taught me and my husband loves it!'" Bastianich said. "That gives me great satisfaction -- to be able to impart some of your knowledge into somebody else." Page 16 HAPPENINGS December 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com Rest in peace, karaoke. Damn, that felt good to write. Newspaper obituary writers, we know you occasionally craft “advancers” — death notices for celebrities still very much alive — so the world can read about their lives mere minutes after they expire. Do you ever wish the actual event had occurred? I’m sure it happens. What if the subject is an evil dictator? The sicko who invented the colonoscopy prep drink? Certain U.S. politicians? That’s how I feel about karaoke. Roberto del Rosario, who received a patent for the karaoke machine, died in 2003. But I want the entire institution wiped off Earth’s face. That means eliminating every machine that stores the songs, every LED screen that displays the lyrics, and every bar, restaurant or public building that has ever advertised KARAOKE NIGHT! Mas Prozac, por favor I really thought karaoke would have a brief shelf life, sort of like ax throwing or Jessica Simpson. Instead, the opposite seems to be occurring. While sailing aboard a cruise ship recently, karaoke threatened to knock Bingo off its perch as the most popular activity. It was omnipresent, even taking place on days the ship stopped in exotic Mexican ports and passengers should have been spending their time purchasing sombreros and visiting pharmacies to stock up on Viagra and Prozac. I thought about buying the latter, simply as a means of dealing with a ship full of aspiring (in their opinions, anyway) Katy Perrys and Michael Bubles. We have to grow weary of karaoke eventually, right? And when we do, the epitaph, courtesy of me, is ready to go: Karaoke, the entertainment phenomenon that launched absolutely nobody into musical stardom, died today after an unexpectedly long life. No cause of death was given, but it had been in failing health after professional singers and songwriters threatened to stop making music altogether. Reached aboard his tour bus, Garth Brooks greeted the news with a giddy, “Yee haw!” “I realize ‘Friends in Low Places’ is about a drunk guy showing up at his ex’s wedding, but that doesn’t mean you have to be drunk when you sing it,” the country superstar said. “I mean, you have to be somewhat sober to sing, ‘the last one to know, the last one to show, I was the last one you thought you’d see there.’ It doesn’t work after your buddies buy you three tequila shots and dare you to take the stage.” Adele responded with her trademark English bawdiness. “You know why I’m standing on this stage and you (expletive) people paid $1,500 a (expletive) ticket to see me?” she asked a soldout Caesar’s Palace crowd. “Because I know how to hit, and hold, the (expletive) high notes on ‘Someone Like You’ and you don’t. Don’t ever (expletive) forget that!” ‘Grease’ Will Finally be the Word Again John Travolta issued a written statement: “I only wish Olivia Newton-John were alive to realize sorority girls and bachelorette parties will never again have the opportunity to butcher not only the lyrics and the tune of ‘Summer Nights,’ but also the choreography. This is a proud day for everybody affiliated with ‘Grease.’” Taylor Swift appeared upset by the news but told a football stadium full of fans that she was actually shedding tears of joy. “For all you teenage girls out there who have ever arrived at a karaoke party two hours before it started, nervously wrote your names on the sign-up sheet, and then waited another 90 minutes before belting ‘Style’ from the depths of your diaphragms, you can stop now.” “Here’s how it’s SUPPOSED to sound,” she added. Services for karaoke are pending; organizers are trying to find a day when the world is not engaged in another unexplained phenomenon that shows no signs of abating. - Greg Schwem My Turn with Greg Schwem Karaoke: Your obituary whenever you are ready to die
