Our Story with Janis & Julie of The Coffee Pot Our Story with Janis & Julie of The Coffee Pot “We have worked together through many jobs and even had a cleaning business. When we were both looking for a new venture back in 2004 – The Lakeside Diner (now The Pot) became available. We made a business plan and took the leap of faith. We think most people have things that bring them back to a point and time - and that’s why we kept the old school diner atmosphere. It makes sense to keep with the time frame which the building and diner business was formed. The Coffee Pot has been a diner since the early 1930’s. In fact, the neon ‘LUNCH’ sign that hangs over our little diner was commissioned in the early years of the building for The Keno Koffee Pot. It is a one of a kind sign. When we first opened, we would sit in the fenced in backyard after closing and hash over the day (get it?). This is when we started to think – ‘Gee, it’s nice out here, we should put tables back here.’ It was Ray Forgiani who said – ‘Don’t put the tables behind the fence-put them out there (pointing to our driveway), that’s what they do in Europe.’ It was a great idea. The pictures from that first year are so funny! Our cute little baby Garden of Eatin’ was born and we can’t wait to re-open it this spring! In recent years, we have also expanded to The Kenosha Room - the building just to the north, and The Coffee Pot Inn - a B&B located above the Kenosha Room. We continue to grow as much as our space allows! This family - we call it our Coffee Pot family — customers, employees and vendors throughout the 18 years has grown greatly since 2004. We have seen babies born and grow up to head off to college and get married! We have met treasured friends and have had to said goodbye to too many. We have really seen Kenosha grow over these 18 years. Downtown Kenosha is getting more interesting and becoming more of a destination every year. We are confident that the future is bright for Downtown Kenosha!” “Be present, know your customers, love what you do.” - Janis & Julie’s advice to anyone thinking about starting their own business. 4914 Seventh Ave kenoshacoffeepot.com Open breakfast and lunch seven days a week

Go Downtown Kenosha! Go Downtown Kenosha! The Lakeshore Business Improvement District has adopted a new brand and logo to help promote the shops, restaurants, attractions, businesses, organizations, and events in the area. The brand will empower people to think about literally going downtown for their shopping, dining, business, and fun needs! GO DOWNTOWN KENOSHA is now the forward-facing brand that will signify the official activities and promotions for Downtown Kenosha. A new logo was created by local graphic designer, Anna Bauer. The artwork reflects the iconic light posts, flower baskets, and connection to water and park spaces that make Downtown Kenosha special. In addition to the new brand, new social media accounts have been established and a new website to promote the district has been created by The Gratzi Inc., a web and marketing firm located in Kenosha. The new site will feature some of the tools that people were used to using on the previous downtown site – a blog, business directory, and event listings. Visitors to the page will also find links for a newsletter signup, information about how to get involved in activities downtown, district meeting minutes, and the digital edition of the Go Downtown Kenosha Magazine, among other useful functions. You’ll also be able to purchase universal Downtown Gift Cards on the site! The mission of the Lakeshore Business Improvement District is to create a livable, vibrant space which is sensitive to Kenosha’s historic roots, with significant activities and jobs that make it a destination for the region. Additionally, the BID strives to engage local residents and visitors to the community in a welcoming and thriving environment. The aim is to establish Downtown Kenosha as a place where businesses prosper; where the community gathers; and where all people come to live, work, play, and invest. The new brand is one of the many tools that the BID will utilize to achieve these goals. If you have questions about the Lakeshore Business Improvement District or businesses in the area, please feel free to reach out by email through Visit Kenosha at [email protected] GoDowntownKenosha.com

Q&A with Brett Bjorn of Bjorn’s Fine Clothing Q&A with Brett Bjorn of Bjorn ’ s Fine Clothing Mike Bjorn’s Fine Clothing 5614 Sixth Ave mikebjorns.com Open Mondays - Saturdays “Hustle, coffee, sarcasm and dedication,” are Brett Bjorn’s secrets to success. Q. What are some of the hottest trends in men’s clothing for 2023? A. The earth and jewel toned colors are coming back in full force! We have been seeing a trend of people looking for suits and accessories in sage, terra cotta, hunter green, desert rose, and other similar colors. People have been becoming more unique with their accessory pairings and Bjorn’s is uniquely suited to help with those accessories with our thousands of ties and bow ties to choose from. Q. How has the men’s clothing game changed over the past few years? A. We’ve seen a big uptick in formal weddings. It seems like more and more couples are opting for black tie events, versus a more laid-back affair. They seem to want a more special event for their big day! Q. You just don’t carry suits; can you tell us some of the other clothing you carry? A. We carry a wide range of accessories including ties, bow ties, pocket squares, a recently expanded hat collection, and the widest selection of fun and crazy socks around! It gets lot of people into the store that wouldn’t normally have a reason to enter a menswear store otherwise. Our unconventional, big, red “Fun Socks Sold Here” sign encourages people outside of our typical demographic to stop in and look around. Q. As a member of the Downtown Business Improvement District (B.I.D) what would you like to see improve in Downtown Kenosha? A. I’d like for the area to keep improving the aesthetics and atmosphere of the downtown. I’m a strong believer in lighting that improves the ambiance of the area. I’d also like to see more holiday decorations throughout the year to set a fun tone. Q. What is your personal favorite line of clothing at Bjorn’s? A. My personal favorite is our wide selection of bold, patterned shirts. My staff are huge fans of our extensive tie wall and sock collection! “My parents, Mike and Judy Bjorn, started Bjorn’s Fine Clothing in 1981 after saving up their hard-earned money. My dad worked for other menswear stores, so he was familiar with the industry. I grew up with the business and have been invested in it my entire life. It’s my parent’s legacy and I’m happy and honored to be a part of it!” - Brett Bjorn

Downtown Community Downtown Community Working Together Working Together by The Lettering ettering Machine Our family has been born and raised in Kenosha for many generations. Kenosha in itself is a tight community, downtown being one of the strongest bonds. Our small business owners support each other in many different ways. As The Lettering Machine, we try to get involved with as much as we can and in any way that we can. From providing merch for events that we can’t personally be involved with, to physically pouring beer at the Boys and Girls Club Dairy State event, we strive to participate as much as possible. We are not the only ones that get involved, here are some others. The Copy Center is a downtown staple that is a great example of a business that supports other businesses in our area. Each year they host an event called Bowls and Books. This is held at the Rhode Center of the Arts and raises money for the Theatre. They invite local authors to display their works, answer questions, conduct readings and promote themselves. The “bowls” part of the event is the local restaurants that bring their best homemade soups. Attendees of this event place a donation, get a large sample of soup from each location, and vote on their favorites. It is a great way to discover new places to dine and support a great cause. Blue House Books is another downtown business that teams up with others around them! This past year they worked with Equinox down the street and had a succulent class in the presence of all their books. They also host pop up book shops at Public Brewing. Book lovers can head over to Public and enjoy a local brew while browsing the items that Blue House has to offer. Teaming up with other shops opens your businesses' exposure to new potential customers, as well as giving your customers the opportunity to experience another business that they might not have heard about before. During the past Christmas holiday we saw many collaborations happen all over downtown. The shops on Sixth Avenue worked with Kenosha Beauty Supply for a Christmas Tree decoration contest. Tinsel and Tangle was a shopping event hosted by Authentique, To & From, Dawn’s Style, Blue House Books, Lulu Birds and Tavern on 6th… whew…that is a LOT of shops working together! Then there was the Friendship Park Holiday Shopping Day. Duck Duck Goose, Vintage Underground, Equinox, Blue House Books, Cut Stone, House of Nutrition and Smarty’s Sweets & Treats all teamed up to promote each other and share what they had to offer the shoppers of Kenosha. During Halloween there is a great Trick or Treat event hosted by Josh Ferguson that ties all the downtown businesses together and spreads awareness of all that we have to offer. Keep an eye out for the Friendship Park Valentine's day shopping event, the Bellissima Paint and Sip hosted at Cut Stone Foods and the Downtown Easter Egg Hunt coming up in April! The holidays are such a great opportunity to create fun events for customers and shop owners as well. Don’t forget about the Museums too! Coming up in February, Public Craft Brewing is hosting a Land Before Time event at the Dino Museum that exposes their great craft beers, along with the dinosaur myths from the childhood movie. Ashling on the Lough is teaming up with the Civil War Museum and will be hosting their Civil War Media Club. We could go on and on about all the events that happen in our waterfront area, but these are just a few. To keep up to date with what’s going on in downtown Kenosha, go to visitkenosha.com/events, the NEW godowntown kenosha.com/events and follow all your favorite shops on social media! Dave & Tina Chatmon are owners of The Lettering Machine in Downtown Kenosha.

Q&A with Emily of Em’s Dance Center Q&A with Emily of Em ’ s Dance Center Q. When did you first fall in love with dance? A. I honestly can't remember a time when I didn't love dance. I started dancing at age 3, so dance has always been a part of my life. I don't know what I'd do without it! Q. What inspired you to open your own studio? A. We opened Em’s Dance Center August 2020. As a kid, I wanted to be a dance teacher and studio owner but as I got older, I realized how much work a studio is, so decided I would rather work for someone else to be able to just teach. However, I had a group of students and parents who encouraged me to open my own place. With their backing, I went for it! I've always loved downtown, it was perfect and I'm convinced it was also meant to be. I got really lucky that it was located in our beautiful neighborhood. Em’s Dance Center 5913 Sixth Ave-A emsdancecenter.com “Two of my biggest inspirations are Jill and Mary, my former instructors. It is because of them that I not only kept my passion for dance, but also discovered my love of teaching.” - Emily Morrison, owner & artistic director  Q. Can anyone sign up to become a member at Em’s Dance Center? A. We begin taking students age 2.5 all the way through adult (sometimes younger if the dancer is ready). We offer competitive and noncompetitive dance programs. Our non-competitive classes include Tiny Tots (Creative Movement), Ballet/Tap, Ballet/Lyrical, Jazz/Hip Hop, Tap, Modern/Contemporary. We offer pre-pointe and pointe for our advanced students (with instructor approval) and we have classes for adults. To register visit emsdancecenter.com and select the register tab. Then select new family and you will be walked through registration. We hold strong values and teach our students to be kind, have consideration for others, be disciplined, work hard, be respectful, and be honest. Our vision for the future is to be able to bring the love and joy of dance to anyone who wants to learn. Everyone is welcome and everyone can dance!

My Story by Donna Gunn-Newkirk of Donna’s Gymnastics My Story by Donna Gunn-Newkirk of Donna’s Gymnastics “As a child, I was often found outside climbing trees, dancing and tumbling in the yard. After watching Olga Korbut in 1972 Olympics, I was immediately bitten by the gymnastic bug, but there were not a lot of gymnastics programs around in Rochester, NY, where I lived at the time. I competed in gymnastics in high school and in college. In high school, I started teaching gymnastics at the gymnastics club where I trained. While also working as a special education teacher (another lifelong passion of mine), I started Donna’s Gym-nastics by offering classes in the basement of a church in Twin Lakes in April of 1993 and also launched a mobile program, where we would offer classes at Kenosha daycares and preschools. A few years later, as the program grew, we moved to a larger facility and started renting a large parochial school gym in Wilmot. Eventually, we also opened a small program at a church in Kenosha. At the church locations, they had to pull out, set-up our equipment, and put it away each day! In the fall of 2008, I started teaching PE and dance at a Fine Arts school in Racine and, with living in the city of Kenosha, the ride out to the county got to me. So, in September of 2012, I decided to relocate to Downtown Kenosha. Donna’s Gym-nastics operates our 2600 square foot gym in 1/3 of the old Walgreens building on Sixth Avenue. At the time, the rents in Downtown Kenosha were a lot cheaper and more affordable than areas on the westside of the city. I had already made friends with a few downtown business owners and felt a draw to the area. I love the small town feel of Downtown Kenosha and the friendly foot traffic especially on the weekends. Donna’s Gym-nastics offers classes in a non-competitive, safe, educational, friendly and fun environment. We keep our student/teacher ratios small to met the individual needs of our students. During the school year, we offer 8 week classes for 5 terms or sessions. Our gymnastics program begins with ages 6 months, starting with our baby gym program, then our preschool and movement programs and finally, our structured gymnastics, tumbling & mini tramp classes. We go all the way up to 18 years old. Visit donnasgymnastics.com and find the perfect class for your little tumbler!” “Educational Gymnastics At Its Best!” “We make fitness and movement fun!” Donna’s Gym-nastics 5717 Sixth Ave donnasgymnastics.com

Q&A with Kierstin, club manager at Anytime Fitness Q&A with Kierstin, club manager at Anytime Fitness Q. You have a great weight loss story, would you like to share it with us? A. When I was about 20 and out in the world on my own for the first time, I developed really bad eating habits combined with a not-so-active lifestyle. After not so long, I found myself at not just an unhealthy weight but I was struggling to do things I enjoyed. At that point, there were two things I knew I needed to do: join a gym so I could move more and change my eating habits. I had toured a few gyms in the area, but ended up joining Anytime Fitness in Downtown Kenosha. I needed a gym that I could go to whenever I wanted so I didn’t have an excuse not to go, but what I ended up getting was SO much more than that. When I came in for my tour, that was the first time I met Louie, and from the moment I walked into the club it felt like I was supposed to be there. He didn’t just want me to join, he wanted me to succeed and so did everyone else. I get asked a lot what the hardest part was, for me it wasn’t getting started but keeping going. I had to start holding myself accountable for my goals and make a plan that I could actually stick to. I look at physical fitness and nutrition a lot differently now than I used to. It used to seem like a punishment, but it’s really incredible to see what your body is capable of when you treat and fuel it well. Anytime Fitness 611 56th St anytimefitness.com Q. What makes Anytime Fitness stand out from all the other gyms in the area? A. Aside from the basics of being available for members 24/7, being adults only (18+ to join) and having a great location, the biggest perk of being a member here is the wide variety of equipment and space available and the support you receive from everyone, staff and members alike.Getting started is SUPER easy! If you visit our website, you can join online or stop in during staffed hours and join in person! Q. What are some of the most important qualities for a manager at Anytime Fitness? A. You need to be compassionate and understanding, because everyone you meet here is going to have different goals and struggles to reach them. We’re here not just to support you physically, but we’re here to help you get over the mental hurdles as well. Q. What do you love about working in Downtown Kenosha? A. I love the atmosphere of being in the Downtown near the lake and being surrounded by all of the other small businesses (not many people realize that Anytime Fitnesses are individually owned and operated)! I am a Kenosha native, and have always enjoyed being down here, and now that I work here it’s been so cool to get to know everyone! “Through tears and tough conversations with myself, and  turning motivation into dedication, I fell in love with fitness.” - Kierstin Casey
