Page 4 HAPPENINGS January 19, 2023 www.hap2it.com January is National Train Your Dog Month, but noted "dog whisperer" Cesar Millan said it should be called Train Your Human Month. "Human training is year-round for me," Millan told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "We need to make sure the human has the knowledge to be able to train." Millan said the human must present the right energy, philosophy and actions to imprint upon the canine. That's why Millan's latest TV show is called Better Human Better Dog. The second half of the show's second season is now airing on Nat Geo Wild. "For that human to be successful at home, I have to clean their energy," Millan said. One simple adjustment Millan makes is advising about the way a dog owner walks. He said that by the person walking with confidence, rather than passively hunched over, the dog will be more receptive to follow the lead. Though Millan offers services to dog owners all year, he recognizes that January is a good time to designate a month for training because many people will receive a puppy for Christmas. Also, with people making New Year's resolutions, Millan hopes dog owners will include ones to set a good example for their pet. "We have to make sure the human is better for the dog to reflect what the human became," Millan said. One tool Millan co-founded to assist humans is the Halo collar. It uses sound and vibration to keep dogs within an area designated by GPS coordinates, or a Bluetooth "Beacon" indoors. Millan said humans must get their dogs into one of two states of mind to introduce the collar. If the dog is in a mode of calm surrender, or happy go-lucky, it will be most receptive to receiving the collar. "The dog has to feel that when you put on a leash or a collar that he's winning a gold medal in the Olympics," Millan said. "He's so proud of wearing it. Only good comes out every time he wears that collar, and that's how you create a good imprint." Prayer, meditation, yoga or simple silence can lead a dog to a state of calm surrender, Millan said. Playing and treats can lead to the happy, go-lucky mindset, but he cautions about rewarding canine behaviors too soon. "Most people give affection too soon," Millan said. "The dog has to learn to earn the food, the toy or the affection." The Halo collar has 10 intensity settings. Millan said settings 0 to 5 use gentler sounds and vibrations to guide the dog. If the dog does not follow the milder settings, he said it may be necessary to turn up the intensity. Settings 6 to 10 create static stimulation intended to guide the dog back down to milder settings. "It's not for the purpose of hurting," Millan said. "It's for the purpose of snapping the brain out of it. Don't look at the deer. Don't look at the cat. Just snap out of it." Millan said the Halo collar can also train dogs to stay away from other pets, like cats, or other people who are afraid of dogs. If you set the Beacon around the person, the collar will train the dog to stay away. "Sometimes their energy, their fear is so strong that it brings the dog to them," Millan said. "If you put it around a person who is afraid, it creates a halo around people." Millan said he is excited to welcome more humans to the world of training in January, along with 12 new episodes of Better Human Better Dog. Millan said he also hopes to expand the show internationally. "This thing can go forever," Millan said. "Better Human Better Dog Saudi Arabia, Better Human Better Dog China, Better Human Better Dog Africa, Better Human Better Dog Russia. Anywhere there is commotion, send me there." By Fred Topel Cesar Millan: Dog training should be 'human training' Born César Felipe Millan Favela August 27, 1969 (age 53) Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico Millan grew up in a rural town working on animals on the farm where his grandfather was a tenant farmer. He had a natural way with dogs at a young age, being nicknamed “el Perrero,” the dog herder. At the age of 21, Millan illegally crossed the border into the United States, speaking no English and with only $100. One of his early friends after arriving in the US was actress Jada Pinkett Smith. She insisted that he learned English, helping him with an English tutor for a year. After a popular 2002 profile in the Los Angeles Times about Millan and his Dog Psychology Center, he began working with a production company to develop a television pilot for The Dog Whisperer. Millan’s first TV show, The Dog Whisperer, premiered in September 2004 on National Geographic Channel and would be the networks top show in its first season. While working with dogs, Millan uses vocal marks, gestures, and body language to communicate with the canines rather than speech or the dog’s name. He believes that dogs sense, understand, and respond to a person’s energy more easily than their speech. Millan has recovered from a dark period in his life. In May 2010, while mourning the loss of his beloved dog, Daddy, he learned of his wife’s intent to divorce him and attempted suicide. FYI Cesar Milan

Page 6 HAPPENINGS January 19, 2023 www.hap2it.com Triple Frontier and Country Strong star Garrett Hedlund says the lives of Oklahoma locals -- including his saloon owner character Mitch -- are forever altered by the arrival of Sylvester Stallone's mob boss Dwight in the Paramount+ drama, Tulsa King. Season 1 of the series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Sopranos writerproducer Terence Winter is now available to stream in its entirety on Paramount+. The show, which already has been renewed for a second season, casts Stallone as Dwight "The General" Manfredi, a New York mafia capo looking to resume his career after serving 25 years in prison, but surprised to find the crime family he always loyally protected exiling him to Oklahoma to see what he can establish and earn there. The first thing Dwight does when he gets into town is assemble a crew of outsiders and ne'er-do-wells to work for him, particularly Mitch and cab driver Tyson (Jay Will.) "They're local to Tulsa. They're putting in the good fight to provide and survive," Hedlund told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "They see this man walk in with this confidence, who exudes a little bit of danger, a little bit of intrigue," he added. "He might spice up life here in Oklahoma and he might possibly lead to a better future for my character and definitely for Tyson, as well. We see a little opportunity and then, episode to episode, you see if those opportunities come to fruition." Newcomer Will sees Tulsa King as an exploration of good and evil from the point of view of mostly young men looking to either forge their own paths or get a second chance at life. "I wanted to tell a story about when it is in one's life that they start to live for themself, make decisions for themself and take full responsibility for the actions they've done in the past," Will said. "This is where that happens. Tulsa King is in that time for Tyson." The money and lifestyle Dwight offers are alluring to Tyson, who was raised by loving, middle-class parents who taught him to be honest and work hard. "Tyson is just conflicted the whole time because he hasn't seen money. He hasn't seen opportunity. He has seen the mundane, everyday, getting up, going to work, going to school, coming back, repeating that loop," Will said. "Before Dwight, Tyson couldn't break that loop." Understandably, Tyson's father Mark (Michael Beach) wants him to steer clear of Dwight. "It's an honor, actually, for me to play a role like this," Will said. "It's rare that we see a Black family where the father is still in the household and wants the best for their son or daughter or child. You've got the full unit in the house," he added. "[Tyson] grew up the right way in a decent home. ... He makes the decision to do his own thing now." Mitch is at a different place in his life. He is an ex-bull rider and ex-convict caring for his aging veteran father when Dwight walks into his bar. "It grounds everything in realism. It makes everything relatable," Hedlund said of the connections Dwight develops with the locals. "It makes you want to root for them. It makes you see yourself within these characters. That's the essence of what makes a really wonderful, exciting show." The actors were thrilled to act opposite Rocky and Rambo legend Stallone in Tulsa King, Stallone's first full-time TV gig. "It's important for me to see and work with people who really care about the work, honestly, who are in the business of telling the truth," Will said. "To be around that company keeps you sharp." Hedlund has known Stallone for about 20 years. They first met when they were training at the same gym for action sequences in separate movies. "We've been buds ever since. It felt like it was due time to go share the screen together," Hedlund said. "It was awesome. It was collaborative. It was really damn enjoyable. The man is the world's hero and has been for a long time. It was an honor to work with him, an honor to be a part of this with him and see where it goes from here." By Karen Butler Garrett Hedlund stars in "Tulsa King," all nine episodes of Season One are now available on Paramount+ Garrett Hedlund: Sylvester Stallone's mob boss brings 'danger, intrigue' to 'Tulsa King' Garrett Hedlund (L) and Sylvester Stallone star in "Tulsa King."

Page 12 HAPPENINGS January 19, 2023 www.hap2it.com Brighton: Brash and flamboyant Brighton is South England’s fun city and the destination for students, bohemians, and bluecollar Londoners looking to go "on holiday." In 1840, a train connected the city to London, making the beach accessible to the masses for the first time. Since then, Brighton has become "London by the Sea." Whether wind, rain, or shine, it’s where people come for a good time – and a fine toffee apple. And though the town has grown a little shabby, Brighton still knows how to crank out the fun. The Royal Pavilion, once the holiday residence of King George IV, is one of Brighton’s most eyecatching landmarks. And a visit here comes with a little gossip. The decadent and trendsetting king was well known for his scandalous "secret" marriage to Catholic widow Mrs. Fitzherbert. He loved to vacation with her here by the sea and host glamorous dinner parties. Along with Mrs. Fitzherbert, music was one of his passions. In the music room, the king’s own band serenaded guests under Chinese-inspired decor. The king’s other passion: food. The table in the banquet room is set for the dessert course. Picture England’s elite nibbling crumpets under the one-ton chandelier, with its dragons exhaling light through lotus-shaped shades. The Palace Pier juts playfully into the sea. Glittering and shiny with amusement-park rides and carnival games, it’s the place to go to buy tacky souvenirs, have your fortune told, and eat "candy floss" (cotton candy). The pier’s pavilion is a 19th-century gem. Tune out the carnival ambience for a moment and imagine yourself as a Victorian Londoner out on holiday, seeing brilliant electric lights for the first time. The big news in Brighton in the last decade was the building of a beachfront observation tower designed by the architects of the London Eye. The i360 Tower, as it’s called, includes a doughnutlike elevator that lifts tourists to a bird’s-eye view over town. Then, of course, there’s the beach. While Brighton isn’t likely to be confused with Spain’s Costa del Sol, a stroll along its gravelly beach offers a pleasant opportunity to get your feet wet. And slingback beach chairs along the promenade are available to rent. The countryside around Brighton offers less ticky-tacky and more pristine nature. Stretching east of Brighton is a coastline fringed with broad, rolling green downs, or hills. This area, known as the South Downs Way, runs for 100 miles along the chalk hills of England’s south coast, and in 2010 it became the country’s 10th national park. Beachy Head is a highlight of the South Downs Way. Its white cliffs are often mistaken for Dover’s. Really, it’s the same chalk, just farther west along the coast. Locals consider these trails a birthright. English hiking clubs have even sponsored what they call a "Mass Trespass," when walkers throughout the land use every trail and cross every fence to assert their public right of way. “Kissing gates" allow people to pass – but not the sheep. Along the way, walkers may stumble upon some mysterious chalk art. Since prehistoric times, locals have scratched away the topsoil from these hills to expose the chalk underneath. The Long Man of Wilmington depicts the outline of a man holding what looks like two staves, one on either side. At 230 feet tall, he is one of the largest representations of a human being anywhere. I’ve been told he’s a sun god opening the doors of heaven, or a marker for monks on a pilgrimage trail. Arundel Castle, west of Brighton, is the home of the Duke of Norfolk. This Neo-Gothic creation of the late 19th century has straight-out-of-a-storybook appeal – gorgeous interiors and delightful gardens, particularly Earl’s Garden, based on 17thcentury designs. But the place feels pompous to me – even for a castle – and the opulent interiors offer a somewhat off-putting taste of England’s affection for its outmoded nobility. Still, when do you have the opportunity to hang out in the digs of a duke? In the 1930s, a local farmer found the remains of a Roman palace on his land. Wary of archaeologists, he didn’t disclose his find until 1960. The ensuing excavation turned up Fishbourne Roman Palace, about an hour west of Brighton. The highlight here are the well-preserved floor mosaics, nearly 2,000 years old and still in their original location. When you’re done with the must-see sights, relax in Brighton. While most English cities keep their stiff upper lip, Brighton knows how to let loose, just as it has for the last two centuries. It may not be the most tasteful place, but it’s a refreshing break if you’re suffering from an excess of churches, museums, and doilies in your English travels. By Rick Steves travel TSA X-ray finds boa constrictor in carry-on bag at Florida airport Transportation Security Administration agents at a Florida airport noticed something shocking in an X-ray image of a traveler's carry-on bag -- a 4-foot boa constrictor. The TSA said in an Instagram post that a traveler at Tampa International Airport in Florida put her carry-on bag through the security checkpoint X-ray machine, and operators quickly identified the live snake. "Our officers at Tampa International Airport didn't find this hyssssssterical," the post said. "We really have no adderation for discovering any pet going through an x-ray machine." A TSA spokeswoman said the woman told agents the boa was her emotional support pet. The spokeswoman said the airline was informed and the snake was not allowed to board the plane. "Do you have asp-rations of taking a snake on a plane? Don't get upsetti spaghetti by not understanding your airline's rules. For instance, airlines don't allow nope ropes in carry-on bags and only a few allow them to slither around in checked bags, if packaged correctly," the Instagram post said.

Page 14 HAPPENINGS January 19, 2023 www.hap2it.com How marriage words evolved over centuries Equally Wed, a platform for planning LGBTQ+ weddings, recently reveal couples are choosing nontraditional words to describe themselves and their celebrations. Broom is a combination ofbrideandgroom, and is used by nonbinary people who feel they don’t fit neatly into either category; so is gride. A gender-neutral word for people committing themselves to one another is marrier. These aren’t the first changes in the words for a wedding’s most crucial participants. Even man and wife, husband, andgroomwere once innovations. In school, I was taught that man and mankind were “universal” words that included women, though this seemed specious even to 8- year-old me, and such usage is now discouraged. In Old English, though, it was true, for the most part. In a 10th-century homily, Christ is described as “the son of one man,” that “man” being the Virgin Mary; in a retelling of Genesis, God created “the two men, Adam and Eve.” “Man” must mean “human being” or “person,” or these lines make no sense. When Old English writers wanted to specify someone’s sex, they often used wer for males andwiffor females. Another homily relates that in the beginning God created “twegen [two] men, wer & wif” – two humans, man and woman, male and female. In Old English, wif sometimes meant “wife” as well as “female person,” andwercould mean “husband” as well as “male person.” But whilewifeendures as the word we know today, wer disappeared around 1200, now found only in the compound name of a mythical monster, the werewolf. At the same time man narrowed its meaning from “human” to “male human” in particular. Husbandgained popularity in the 13th century. It derives from the Old Norse husbondi, literally “house-dweller,” and at first meant “master of the house,” akin to the Latin paterfamilias. Since in this era the head of a household was by definition the male spouse, husbandeasily applied to the latter role too. Grooms did not appear until much later, however. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, English inheritedbride– a woman who is getting married or is recently married – from Germanic, making it an extremely old word. Her male counterpart was the brydguma, literally the “brideman” – gumaorgomewas a poetic word that, like wer, specified male sex. Brydgome became bridegroomaftergomebecame obsolete in the early 16th century, perhaps becausegroomwas already in common use and resembled it. Groom too referred to a person of male sex, but was less august than gome – a groom was a boychild or a servant. By the 17th century, groom had decoupled frombrideand could stand alone as the male spouse-to-be. By Melissa Mohr Workers dig through trash to recover lost wedding rings A New Hampshire man who accidentally threw his wife's wedding rings in the trash was able to find them again with some help from sanitation workers. Kevin Butler of Windham said he didn't realize until his trash was at the local transfer station that the napkin he threw in the garbage contained his wife's rings, which had been wrapped up to dry after being cleaned. "She looked around for her rings. I said, 'I've got a good feeling they may be in the trash that I just took to the transfer station,'" Butlertold WMUR-TV. Butler went back to the transfer station, where he explained the situation to Dennis Senibaldi, Windham's general services director. Senibaldi and his team reviewed surveillance camera footage to identify the area most likely to contain the bag from Butler's home. The area turned out to contain about 20 tons of trash, which the team then sifted through until they found the right bag. "As we were going through the bag that we knew was his, he actually said, 'It's not in here.' And I said, 'No, there's a couple little pieces left,'" Senibaldi recalled. "I had my rubber gloves on, I moved a few items out of the way and saw literally the very last napkin and I opened it up." Butler said he is thankful to have the rings back, even though it meant digging through trash. "Wouldn't recommend anyone else do it," Butler said. "But, you know, to get the rings back, I would do it a thousand times over." Butler thanked the transfer station workers by bringing them pizza. your bridal guide

Alternatives in bloom You just got engaged. Let the wedding planning begin! There is so much to see and select, including flowers. Flowers? You forgot all about those. While flowers are beautiful, they really are not your thing. You’ve got way too many allergies to contend with a big bouquet in your hands. Luckily for you, there are alternatives. Not every wedding features real flowers. Some brides looking to cut costs opt for artificial flowers over real. Others take a different route and skip the flowers altogether. They may have feather bouquets and boutonnieres for attendants and goldfish bowls on every table at the reception. Flowers are not a necessity at a wedding. Planning to have your wedding outside and hoping it isn’t too sunny, or worse, rains? Instead of bouquets, have your bridesmaids carry parasols. They can shade themselves should it be sunny and stay dry should it rain. Fans are another idea. You can carry a large ornate fan instead of a wedding bouquet and have your bridesmaids and flower girl carry smaller fans. Having a winter wedding? Skip the bouquets in favor of muffs. Your bridesmaids and flower girl will appreciate having a muff to sink their hands into on a cold winter’s day. Purses are also popular bouquet alternatives. Look around for some beautiful handbags that will complement your bridesmaids’ and flower girls’ dresses and let them carry those. Having your wedding outside at night? Try lanterns. That’s right. Help light up the celebration by having your bridesmaids and flower girl carry lanterns down the aisle. While you’re thinking about the girls, consider the guys, too. You can turn almost anything into a unique boutonniere from buttons to action figures. You can purchase miniature parasols or fans to use as boutonnieres or skip the boutonnieres altogether in favor of bright handkerchiefs. As for floral swags and centerpieces, almost anything will work. Ribbons and bows can easily be turned into swags, as can fish netting should you be going for a beach theme. Baskets of seashells would make great centerpieces, as would floating candles, candy bowls and teddy bears. If you can envision it, chances are it will work as a centerpiece. The sky is the limit when it comes to floral alternatives. You can turn almost anything into bouquets, boutonnieres and centerpieces from buttons to feathers to ribbons. Head to your local craft store or look online for other ideas. You’re sure to uncover dozens of things you can make or buy to use in place of flowers at your wedding. Depending upon what you choose, you might even save a few dollars. Fresh flowers out of season can cost a bundle, whereas your grandmother’s bucket of buttons fashioned into bouquets and boutonnieres may cost little. The baby dilemma You’ve been to weddings where babies are in attendance and you’ve been to weddings where babies are not in attendance. There are pros and cons to each. When they’re happy, babies can make wonderful additions to a wedding; when they’re out of sorts, they can be terrors. You would like to think your baby would be bubbly, but you can’t know for sure. What is a new mom to do? Will you arrange for your baby to attend your wedding, or will you find someone to care for your baby at home while you say, “I do”? Whether your baby attends your wedding depends first upon you. What is your preference? Is this your first baby? Would you be a complete and utter mess if your baby were not with you? Would you be wracked with worry? If so, you might want to arrange to have your baby somewhere onsite, perhaps not sitting next to you but with a babysitter in a room nearby. If you are bit more relaxed, you might want to consider leaving your baby with someone at home, especially if you think your baby might pose too much of a distraction. You’re going to be busy, and so are most of the people in the wedding party—why add to the activity with a baby in need of constant care? Your decision also depends upon your baby. What would your baby prefer? Is your baby rather congenial? Does your baby like people? If so, they might be perfectly at ease at your wedding and not mind being passed around and held by a lot of different people. If, on the other hand, your baby is not comfortable around people and tends to cling to you, you might want to reconsider having them at your wedding. Do you really want to walk down the aisle and say, “I do,” with a baby on your hip? You also need to consider the uncertainty factor. The best babies in the world have their moments. Your baby could be delightful right up until the exchange of vows and then let out a wail of terror and continue to fuss throughout the rest of the event. Babies are also prone to accidents, soiling their clothes and the clothes of anyone who might be holding them, including you in your expensive white bridal gown, your spouse in his tuxedo rental or an out-of-town guest with no ready access to a change of clothes. Only you can determine whether to have your baby attend your wedding. Should you do, be prepared. Understand that you and your groom will be busy and arrange for someone to care for the baby, preferably someone not directly involved in the wedding. Your mother might adore her new grandchild, but remember, she also adores you and would probably like to see you get married. Your teenage niece, on the other hand, might rather be off in another room caring for your new baby. That’s right. You’ll want to set up a place onsite for the babysitter to take your baby for feedings, naps and play. Don’t expect your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep during the reception in a ballroom with a lot of high-stepping going on. Finally, make sure you have ample supplies for your baby. You’ll be far too busy to make a mad dash home for diapers or formula. Choosing what to do with your baby during your wedding is a big decision. Think it through carefully, and should you decide it would be best to keep your baby at home, don’t get wrapped up in the guilt. Your baby won’t know the difference, and you can always arrange to take some wedding photos with them later or have the babysitter drop by with them at the reception. Be a good guest You pick up your phone, check your e-mail and what do you see? A wedding invitation. It’s been a while since you attended a wedding, and this is one event you do not want to miss. You know the couple well, and you can’t wait to see them exchange vows. You’ll need a gift, of course. Good thing they are registered. You’ll also need something to wear. Here are some tips to ensure you dress appropriately for the occasion. Review the invitation and dress accordingly. If there is a dress code, make sure you follow it. Wear a hat or gloves if asked. If there is no dress code, study the invitation for clues. Formal invitations call for formalwear, whereas informal invitations may call for more casual wear. Whatever the tone of event, make sure you select nice, modest attire. You do not want to wear anything that will embarrass the bride and groom or take away from the joy of their day. Follow all wishes and traditions. If you know the bride would prefer to be the only one wearing white, then select a color other than white. If you know for certain that guests will be wearing hats, then wear a hat. Choose formal hats for formal weddings and informal hats or hairpieces for informal weddings, such as fascinators, headbands, hairclips, flowers and the like. Brush up on your hat etiquette. Generally, men should remove their hats upon entering the church, while women should remove their hats when the mother of the bride removes hers or when sitting down to eat at the reception. Women may wear hairpieces all day. Whether you select attire from your closet or a store rack, try on every piece and make sure it fits and works with the ensemble. This applies to overcoats as well. You do not want to arrive to the wedding in a suit and a ski coat, nor do you want to have to scramble for a new outfit on the day of the wedding. This is especially important with destination weddings. You don’t want to be forced to purchase all new attire because you can’t wear what you brought with you. Not only will you have to spend a lot, but you could miss part of the wedding shopping for new attire. Be a good guest. Dress for the occasion and the bride and groom’s tastes. If the invitation requests guests wear a hat, then by all means do. If it requests guests dress for the beach, then do. Just make sure you wear something appropriate that will not detract from or offend the stars of the show: the bride and the groom. It is their big day after all. By Tresa Erickson Best wedding ever Searching the internet for Best Wedding Ever brings up a few unmentionable events, but not surprisingly, the majority of events involve laughter. Is it possible to have fun at a wedding? Well, yes. You just have to keep your stress level down. How in the world do you keep stress out of your wedding day? After all you’ve done to make this the best day ever, how can it possibly be stress-free? You’re going to have to make some choices. When it’s all been said and done, what really matters? Your attitude. If you are, by nature, an uptight person, the challenge is on. However, with a bit of pre-planning, you can prevent some of the probable frenzy and lessen negative reactions. If possible, have a paid (or unpaid) wedding coordinator who can roll with the punches, ’cuz the punches are going to come. Where’s the cake? The caterer forgot the cake! Send someone to a nearby grocery store to get already prepared desserts and ask a creative friend to display them festively. If the cake fell, don’t scream. It happens. Find that creative friend to remove the cake to the prep area to salvage pieces and place them neatly on plates. (A discreet photo of the mess will one day make you laugh.) Hopefully, your wedding officiant has a sense of humor and can distract attention from unlit candles, children’s antics, a misplaced ring, germ-spewing coughs, boredlooking groomsmen, birds flying amidst the chandeliers, or eyeburning odors among the attendants. Select a few even-tempered guests to quell any possible arguments among exes. Get a good night’s rest before the wedding. Moods alter quickly with sleep deprivation. Limit alcohol availability. A couple choices of wine and maybe a light beer could suffice during the reception. Be sure to have enough hungersatisfying food; growling stomachs can cause the natives to get quite restless. Even “filler food” among hors d’oeuvres can placate a voracious appetite. Not to be undervalued is a quickwitted, humorous (not cheesy) DJ who can spin the atmosphere into laughter. While you and your new spouse are greeting your guests, the DJ is filling the air with celebratory sounds. All is well. Carry on. It’s pretty hard to have the best wedding ever when people are tense, grouchy and rude. When that person is the bride or groom, well now… So, lighten up, prepare as well as you can, then make the best of any situation. Throw cares to the wind and laugh. This is your day — hopefully your best day ever! By Tresa Erickson 2801 - 30th Avenue (Wood Road) Kenosha, WI 262-551-0600 Locally Owned and Operated since 1973. Rihanna releases trailer for Super Bowl performance Rihannareleased a promotional trailer last week for her Super Bowl LVII halftime performance on Feb. 12. The singer/ songwriter/beauty entrepreneur has been pretty quiet so far about her plans for the show, which is expected to feature some of her biggest hits. The trailer shows Rihanna wearing a yellow fuzzy coat, with her hair in geometrical coils. She emerges on what looks like a fashion catwalk, with different voices in the background asking where she's been. The singer's long-awaited ninth studio album has been on the back burner since her last, Anti, in 2016, despite fans clamoring for its release. In May of 2022,Rihanna welcomed a son with rapper and frequent collaborator A$AP Rocky. Since then, she's seemingly focused on her beauty and apparel lines more than any album or music projects until she announced in Septemberthat she'd be the headliner for Super Bowl LVII. Rihanna told Entertainment Tonight last year that she took on the performance because it was something she couldn't turn down, even as a new mother. "The Superbowl is one of the biggest stages in the world. It's an entertainer's dream to be on a stage like that, but you want to get it right." Super Bowl LVII takes place on Sunday, Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Shakira slams her ex in new song Shakira is back with new music. The 45-year-old singer released the song "BZRP Music Session #53" with Argentine producer Bizarrap last week. In "BZRP Music Session #53," Shakira slams her ex and his new girlfriend. The release of the song follows Shakira's split from her longtime partner, Gerard Piqué. Shakira and Piqué were together 12 years and have two children, Milan and Sasha. Piqué has since been linked to Clara Chia Marti, 22. Shakira said in the October issueof Elle that she was experiencing her "darkest hour" in the wake of the split. "I've remained quiet and just tried to process it all," the singer said. "And so it's been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult. I have paparazzi camping outside, in front of my house, 24/7. And there's not a place where I can hide from them with my kids, except for my own house." Demi Lovato album poster banned in Britain Demi Lovato's album poster for her new release has been banned in Britain as it was deemed potentially offensive to Christians. Britain's Advertising Standards Authority says that Lovato's provocative imagery and album title could be misconstrued as blasphemous. The initial ad was placed in six areas around London in August 2022. Lovato's album, released in August, is entitledHoly Fvck, and therein lies the issue. The ASA says most will confuse the title with its more profane version. The album's subject matter deals candidly with Lovato's admitted mental health and addiction struggles. In shades of a similar controversy over music and imagery for Madonna's Like a Virginproject in the 80s,the ASA questioned whether the posterwas appropriate for all ages and whether or not it mocked Christian beliefs. "We considered that the image of Ms. Lovato bound up in a bondage-style outfit whilst lying on a mattress shaped like a crucifix, in a position with her legs bound to one side which was reminiscent of Christ on the cross, together with the reference to 'holy fvck,' which in that context was likely to be viewed as linking sexuality to the sacred symbol of the crucifix and the crucifixion, was likely to cause serious offence to Christians." Holy Fvck is Lovato's eighth album. The former Disney star, said last year that she embraced the dark themes on the album. "You can't have light without dark," she told the Los Angeles Times. "The dichotomy was really important to me, and I had to take my anger out of the shadows in order to heal. I am owning my dark side, and it doesn't have to take me down." music news FLASHBACK - THIS WEEK IN 1990 Hot 100 (pop singles) 1. How Am I Supposed.../Michael Bolton 2. Why Docs Don't Text ICYMI and FYI: A 1991 law designed to protect consumers from unwanted telemarketing blocks health plans from texting patients without their prior consent, but some public health advocates say one adverse effect is that doctors can't send reminders about services, such as mammograms or well-child visits, unless they've contacted the patient first by phone. They're arguing for a change in the law as a health equity issue because the rule tends to affect low-income and underserved patients who are more likely to see and respond to texts about their health than they are to answer calls from unknown numbers or to receive mailed notices, especially if they're at work or move frequently, according to STAT News. Body of Knowledge When race car driver David Purley (1945-1985) crashed during qualifying laps at the 1977 British Grand Prix, he experienced deceleration from 108 miles per hour to zero in 26 inches. The result: 29 fractures, three dislocations and six heart stoppages. The measured 180 Gs (gravitational force) is among the highest known in which the person survived. One G is the force of gravity that keeps our feet firmly planted on the ground. Purley retired from racing in 1985 and took up aerobatics. He died in a plane crash that same year. In fact, the symptoms of hypertension include neither. Most of the time, there are no overt symptoms, which is why high blood pressure is sometimes called the "silent killer." Page 22 HAPPENINGS January 19, 2023 www.hap2it.com Danai Gurira hints at 'Black Panther' spinoff on 'Late Show' Danai Gurira is teasing aBlack Pantherspinoff series. The 44-year-old actress hinted at a possible series featuring herBlack Panther character, Okoye, during The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Gurira plays Okoye in the Marvel filmBlack Panther(2018) and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, released in November. Rumors of a Black Panther spinoff series at Disney+ first surfaced in 2021. On The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert asked Gurira for an update. "I've been told that I can gently allude to this possibility," the actress said. Gurira also discussed Okoye's story in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and how the film showed her character's vulnerable side. "It's been really amazing, actually, because the thing that I didn't expect is the women who come to me, Black women who come to me, and talk about the aspect of how we are in a strong Black woman trope of sorts," the star said. "Okoye is kind of a very palpable representation of that. But to actually see her fail, a lot of women came to me and talked about how they appreciated seeing her vulnerability and showing that we don't and we shouldn't have to carry the world on our shoulders. The idea of her actually going through this failing. ... I realized how powerful it would be to actually allow a character like her to go through failing and complications that cause her to not be able to just stand strong and hold everything together. She has to go through her brokenness too," she added. Gurira is also known for playing Michonne on the AMC series, The Walking Dead. She will reprise the role in a new spinoff series with Andrew Lincoln that will premiere in 2024. 'Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret' trailer released The first trailer for the movie based on Judy Blume's classic bookAre You There God? It's Me, Margaret was released last week. The 1970 book by Judy Blume is considered one of the most influential female coming-of-age novels of all time and is one of the precursors of the popular young adult book genre. The film stars Rachel McAdams, AntMan's Abby Ryder Forston, Benny Safdie (Licorice Pizza) andKathy Bates. Blume said she held onto the film rights for over 50 years because she was afraid an adaptation wouldn't properly reflect the story. But in 2018, producer James L. Brooks and The Edge of Seventeen writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig had the right pitch. "When I sat down with her, she had just seen my first film, The Edge of Seventeen, and she expressed that that made her feel confident that I was going to embrace all the flaws and nuances," Craig told Entertainment Weekly. "That gave her confidence that the film would have the same honesty that she is so known for." In the trailer, Forston, who plays sixth-grader Margaret, is shown sitting in a health class listening to a teacher explain menstruation. Then she's with her family, including her grandmother Sylvia (Bates) and mother Barbara (McAdams) as she tries to figure out the bewildering changes that puberty and adulthood will bring. The film is set in the '70s, the same period as the book. "While certain details have changed over the years, the experience of growing up is really universal," Craig said. "It's the same across the decades. There's something about an 11-year-old or 12-year-old girl today, watching a girl in 1970 go through the exact same experience that she's going through today." The movie opens in theaters April 28. Actor Kevin Spacey pleads not guilty to 7 sex crime charges Kevin Spacey has entered not guilty pleas to seven sexual assault charges in Britain. "Missing my happy place," the 52- year-old actor captioned a photo of a cabin surrounded by snow. Renner underwent surgery earlier this month to treat blunt force trauma to his chest and orthopedic injuries sustained when a 14,000- pound snowplow rolled over him after he helped a motorist whose vehicle was stuck in the snow near his home in a remote area of Nevada. The actor's other credits include Wind River, American Hustle and The Town. U.S. gas prices rise to follow rally in crude oil U.S. motorists are seeing the price at the gas pump move higher as the broader energy complex trades higher on the reopening of China, the world's second-largest economy. Crude oil prices have been on the rise for much of January, rising some 8% last week. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark for the price of oil, was up 1.2% as of 9:30 a.m. EST Tuesday to touch $81 per barrel, it's highest since early December. The rally was supported by the annual reading of Chinese GDP, which at 3% for 2022 was among its worst since the 1970s, but still better than expected. Continuing from last week, the rally is finding its way to the consumer level. Travel club AAA put the national average retail price at $3.32 per gallon for Tuesday, about 17 cents higher than a month ago. Demand at home, meanwhile, remains suppressed, likely due to rising inflation and improved gas mileage. EIA put the national average at $3.97 per gallon for 2022 and expects the average to be around $3.30 per gallon this year, though prices during the summer could be in the $4 range on the back of increased travel. Jennifer Wanamaker of Chesterfield County told Virginia Lottery officials she purchased some New Year's Millionaire Raffle tickets and put them into her family's Christmas stockings. The ticket placed in the stocking for her daughter, Caitlin, turned out to be a $1 million winner in the New Year's Day raffle. "It's surreal," Caitlin told Virginia Lottery officials. "It's a great start to the new year!" Caitlin said she is splitting the $1 million prize with her parents, Jennifer and Patrick, and her twin sister, Alison. "If one person wins, we all win," Patrick said. Caitlin and Alison are both studying nursing in college. Former NFL player Jerrell Powe arrested on kidnapping charge Former NFL defensive tackle Jerrell Powe was arrested on a charge of kidnapping in Jackson, Miss. Jeremy Clarkson apologizes to Harry and Meghan The Grand Tour host Jeremy Clarkson posted an apology on Instagram for disparaging remarks he made about Britain's Prince Harry and his wife, American actress Meghan Markle, in an opinion column he wrote in The Sun last month. "One of the strange things I've noticed in recent times is that whenever an MP or a wellknown person is asked to apologize for something, no matter how heartfelt or profound that apology may be, it's never enough for the people who called for it in the first place," Clarkson wrote, admitting that his words in the column were "horrible" and made him "feel sick" in retrospect. "So I'm going to try and buck the trend this morning with an apology for the things I said in a Sun column recently about Meghan Markle. I really am sorry. All the way from the balls of my feet to the follicles on my head. This is me putting my hands up. It's a mea culpa with bells on," he added. Harry and Meghan swiftly fired back their response to Monday's statement. "While a new public apology has been issued today by Mr. Clarkson, what remains to be addressed is his long standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories, and misogyny," the statement reads. "Unless each of his other pieces were also written "in a hurry," as he states, it is clear that this is not an isolated incident shared in haste, but rather a series of articles shared in hate." coast to coast COVID-19 during pregnancy raises woman's risk of death sevenfold COVID-19 infection in pregnancy raises a woman's risk of death sevenfold and significantly elevates her odds for needing intensive care, a new study finds. "This study provides the most comprehensive evidence to date suggesting that COVID19 is a threat during pregnancy," said lead author Emily Smith, an assistant professor of global health at the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health. "Our findings underscore the importance of COVID-19 vaccination for all women of childbearing age," she said in a university news release. Smith and her colleagues pooled patient data from 12 studies conducted in 12 countries, including the United States. These studies involved more than 13,000 pregnant women. Compared to uninfected pregnant women, moms-to-be with COVID-19 infection not only had seven times higher risk of dying during pregnancy or childbirth, but were at three times greater risk of needing ICU admission. They had about 15 times higher risk of needing ventilator treatment and about 23 times higher risk of developing pneumonia, which is a potentially life-threatening complication of COVID. The pregnant women with COVID also had a five times higher risk of blood clots that can cause pain, swelling or other lifethreatening complications. The study findings were published in BMJ Global Health. The research was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Jeremy Renner
