MichaelBeran, owner of WildlifeCommand Center in Imperial, saidthe call about a monkey sightingin a St. Louis-area garage was farfrom the first primate report he hasreceived. \"Look, I get calls aboutmonkeys all the time,\" Beran toldKSDK-TV. He said his skepticismwas replaced with shock when thecaller made a FaceTime video callto his marketing manager andshowed the animal was an actualcapuchin monkey. \"It looks likethe one from Friends, I am notkidding you,\" the caller said.Beran rushed to the address. \"Forthe first time in 60 years, it wasactually a monkey,\" he said. Hesaid the monkey initially resistedbeing lured into a dog crate.\"The homeowner was standing onsteps that led to a door that wentinto a laundry room,\" Beran toldthe Jefferson County Leader. \"Themonkey all of the sudden decidedto jump on the homeowner'sshoulder. This isthe place to experience thewonders of the Gaelic languageand old Irish civilization, as wellas the country's contemporarycharms. It’s the most mystical,Celtic, spiritual, and rugged regionof Ireland – and the towns alongthe way are just plain cute. There’seven a competition for the bestkept town.Every year, the Irish governmentholds a Tidy Town contest – andcompetition is fierce. Dozens ofvillages are judged for theirbeauty, charm, and, yes, tidiness.My own top contenders for thetitle of tidiest town hug thesouthwest coast, where each townis more endearing than the last.Beyond their pastel facades andprim potted flowers, Kinsale,Kenmare, and Dingle offer richhistory, natural beauty, and warmIrish hospitality.About a half hour south of Cork,Kinsale is a pint-sized Tidy Townwinner with 5,000 people, 25pubs, and a super-sized history. Inits day, this town was home to oneof the most strategic forts in theBritish Empire. It had Ireland’sbest natural harbor and offered agateway to both Spain and France– providing a potential base foreither of these two powers to cutoff English shipping. In whatbecame 17th-century Britain’sversion of the Cuban MissileCrisis, the Spanish nearly tookover Kinsale, almost gaining navaladvantage over England. ButEngland won and eventually builttwo huge, star-shaped fortresses toensure control of Kinsale’s narrowwaterway.The town’s long and skinny oldcenter is part modern marina(attracting wealthy yachters) andpart pedestrian-friendly medievaltown (winning the affection ofscalawags like me). Northwest of Kinsale is Kenmare,another Tidy Town winner thathooks visitors right away withrows of vividly painted shop frontsand a go-for-a-stroll atmosphere.Then, it keeps those visitorsaround with traditional fairs andmarkets, an ancient stone circle,opportunities for horseback ridingand golfing, and the KenmareLace and Design Centre, whichhighlights the trade that putKenmare on the map. (The town’sknack for making exceptionallydelicate lace helped it survive thedevastating Irish famine of themid-1800s.)Quaint Kenmare is the perfectbase for tackling the dramaticRing of Kerry, the road that loopsaround the deservedly famouswestern peninsula. Along the way,treat yourself to a stop at theKissane Sheep Farm to enjoy anup-close look at sheep farming andthe expertise of Ireland’scompetent sheepdogs. Meeting thefarmer, his family, and their welltrained dogs is one of the besthours Ireland offers.Farther north along the coast,colorful little Dingle – my favoritetown in all of Ireland – perches onIreland's westernmost point. Thedramatic scenery of the remoteDingle Peninsula is enough todraw anyone, but the prehistoricwonders that dot this region makeit particularly intriguing.Dingle hasn't won a Tidy Townaward yet, but it's only a matter oftime. Its few streets, lined withramshackle but gaily paintedshops and pubs, run up from arain-stung harbor alwayssheltering fishing boats and leisuresailboats.For an English-speaking traveler,the best “sights” in this town areits people. You may not find theproverbial pot of gold, but you’lltreasure your encounters with theengaging, feisty people who livehere. Most transactions come withan ample side-helping of friendlybanter. As an Irishman once jokedto me, “How can I know what Ithink until I hear what I say?”There’s something delightfulabout small-town Ireland, wherethe people’s connection to theirheritage and to their town is sovivid. These tidy little hubs offer ahealthy dose of Irish culture, andtheir locations make them theperfect springboards forexperiencing the plush beauty ofthe Emerald Isle. It’s been a lovely yearlytradition. This year, for whateverreason, we did not book the hotel.There was no mention of the trip allyear, with us assuming it was nothappening.Then, a couple of weeks beforethe new year, the other familysheepishly mentioned they hadbooked a room at the same hotel wehave stayed at for years. They askedif we wanted to join them, but ofcourse it was quite short notice sowe could not. I suspect they knewfor a while and simply didn’t wantus there. Otherwise, wouldn’t theyhave reached out while making thereservation?At any rate, they went to theshore and did all the things weusually do – posting all of it onsocial media – without us. I becamemore upset as I saw the photos. Ifeel this was a huge betrayal,enough that I do not care to seethem for a while.My husband feels I’m beingpetty, and that I should forgive themand move on. He agrees what theydid is hurtful and selfish but doesn’twant to dwell on it. I feel somethingshifted in our relationship, and notin a good way. I’m seeing them in awhole new light and feel they trulydid not want our presence. We’ve been very close friends formore than a decade. I’m not surehow to get over this hurt. It reallydampened my spirits this holidayseason. What should our next stepsbe? They may not knowwhat you’re thinking, and theymight be eager to make things right.They might also be feelingsomething similar.
