His agent informed us that Yakov, who normally avoids cold weather dates, would be in Chicago for a Saturday testimonial dinner and would be available for one, and only one, 4 pm show on Sunday, December 21. Needless to say, we jumped on the date and what transpired with his performance was magic, pure magic, ending with a standing ovation. After the show, Yakov confessed to us that immediately after he had committed to our date he had second thoughts, regrets that he had accepted our offer. However, he was so moved by the enthusiasm and warmth of the crowd that he realized our community is different, something special. The feelings seem to be mutual with an overwhelming response from fans who were in the audience that cold December afternoon and here’s what a few of them had to say after his performance.“Yakov is hilarious and witty and pure comedy gold. Nestledwhere the Alps meet the AdriaticSea, this land boasts spectacularnatural beauty, a fascinating recenthistory, and a spirit of adventure –and somehow has stayed off thetypical tourist path. One ofSlovenia’s brightest gems is aromantic getaway that onceentertained emperors andpresidents: Lake Bled.Tucked up against the northeastside of the rugged Julian Alps nearthe Austrian border, Lake Bledcomes complete with a sweepingalpine panorama, a cliff-hangingmedieval castle, a lazy lakesidepromenade, and a fairy-tale islandtopped with a church. Since theHabsburg days, this is whereSlovenes take their guests –whether kings or cousins – toshow off their country’s naturalbeauty. And rightfully so.Everyone here seems to strollaround the lake on its scenic fourmile path. At a leisurely pace, thepath takes about an hour and ahalf, but I’d allow more time forsnapping photos of the everchanging views. While walkingthe promenade is slo-mo bliss,biking lets you fast-forwardbetween the views of your choice.On the path, you'll also passseveral imposing villas, mostlybuilt by local aristocrats in theearly 19th century. The mostsignificant was a former residenceof Yugoslav president-for-lifeMarshal Tito – today the HotelVila Bled, a fine place to stop for acoffee and pretend Tito invitedyou to drop by.No visit to Lake Bled is completewithout a trip to its steeple-cappedisland, which nudges the lake'squaintness level over the top. Themost romantic route to the islandis to cruise on one of thedistinctive flat-bottomed pletnaboats. Like the iconic gondolas ofVenice, these boats carry on atradition dating back generations.Locals still build their pletnas byhand with larch wood from adesign passed down from father toson for centuries. There's no keel,so the skilled oarsmen work hardto steer them with each stroke.While watching them row is aspecial experience, a pletna ride isexpensive — and the oarsmenstick close to their 30-minutewaiting time on the island. For amore flexible, cost-friendlyoption, rent a simple woodenrowboat and observe the pletnas atwork as you paddle yourself to theisland.The Church of the Assumption,which sits atop the tiny island, isthe fifth house of worship tooccupy this spot — which wasoriginally the site of an eighthcentury Slavic pagan temple.Today’s Baroque version ispopular for weddings, even iftradition dictates that the groomcarries the bride up the 99 stepsleading from the boat dock to thechurch door. Bled is a greatjumping-off point for a car tripthrough the Julian Alps, and awide variety of other worthwhileside-trips are right at its doorstep.For more fine views, hike up toBled Castle. Dating in one form oranother from about 1,000 yearsago, this was the seat of theAustrian bishops of Brixen, whocontrolled Bled in the MiddleAges. The various sights at thecastle – a decent history museum,frescoed chapel, old-fashionedprinting press, and wine cellar –are cute, but the real reason tocome up here is to bask in thesweeping panoramas.After a long, hard day of lakestrolling and vista-viewing,reward yourself with some ofBled’s famous desserts. Thetown’s specialty is a cream cakecalled kremna rezina, with layersof cream and vanilla custardartfully sandwiched betweensheets of delicate, crispy crust.Slovenes travel from all over thecountry to sample this famousdessert. River, robot fights in an elevator and parking garage, thedestruction of an office lab, and extended climaxes on the freeway and ina molten factory. These were actual stunts, no green screen. The onlyscreens were backdrops for driving shots, and those backdrops were stillfilmed on the road, not generated in a computer. The T-1000 was thegroundbreaking digital effect in 1991. The T-1000 can take the forms ofpeople he killed. That would raise a lot more questions it doesn't havetime to deal with once those bodies are discovered.Hamilton's muscles were also groundbreaking in 1991. As tough as shewas though, seeing the T-800 again turns her right back into the scaredwaitress from 1984, for one scene at least. She snaps back into soldiermode once she learns this T-800 is a protector and even recognizes thevalue of a robot as father. Terminator 2 is the flashier film, but revisit the original and it stillresonates. Terminator 2 is about a boy and his robot, and John comes ofage but Sarah was already an adult, struggling as a single waitress in L.A.,suddenly burdened with birthing the savior of humanity.There was no easy answer for Sarah. She just had to survive and wait.Terminator 2 is the one celebrating its 35th anniversary in theaters. When itcame time to bat, that same kidknew the strike zone and alwaysmade clean contact in the event apitch actually entered the zone. Meanwhile the parents of saidsuperstar spent the entire gamereceiving accolades ranging from,“How nice that you won’t have topay for college” to the moregeneral, “Your child is a naturalathlete.”It’s the latter I’d like to discuss indetail. For there is no such thing asa “natural” athlete.MJ, You are not the GOATat…a few sportsEverybody, no matter howathletic, sucks in at least one sport.I don’t care if you’re MichaelJordan, Tom Brady or formerdecathlete Caitlyn Jenner. Haveyou ever seen basketball legendCharles Barkley, an Olympian andNBA Hall of Fame inductee,swing a golf club? I rest my case.Celebrities aside, I’ve been aroundenough ordinary people, male andfemale, tagged with the “naturalathlete” label. One of them wasme.As a kid, I could hit and field abaseball with aplomb. I was astate-ranked tennis player. I’msomewhat ambidextrous and couldthrow a football with either hand,making me an ideal team memberfor pickup games.Even today, despite an assortmentof aches and pains, I know my wayaround a pickleball court and canshoot in the low 80s on a golfcourse. But put me on a basketball court?Be prepared to watch with a mixof amusement and horror.I’ve been to college andprofessional basketball gameswhere the halftime festivitiesinclude a lucky participant, chosenfrom the crowd, who must make afree throw, a three-pointer, ahalfcourt shot or all three in returnfor a large cash prize or anautomobile. Social media is full ofvideos featuring someone who didjust that and was then mobbed byathletes who are paid — or willsoon be paid — millions to do thesame thing.I’m Shooting Hoops. Cover Your EyesThe entire sports arena wouldwatch me dribble the ball with myright hand before taking my firstshot with my left. I do this notbecause I am adept with bothhands but because I am utterlyincapable of pushing a basketballforward with my dribbling hand.I’ve used that hand to write termpapers, steer an automobile andbalance a serving tray. I can’texplain it, but that hand justrefuses to work when a basketballis placed in it.Perhaps I’d make the free throw. Ifso, I’d retreat to the three point arcand the real hilarity would begin.Following my futile attempt to getthe ball anywhere close to the rim,laughter and murmurs would fillthe arena. Little kids — even thosenot dubbed “natural” athletes —would ask, “Daddy, has he everplayed basketball before?” My half court shot would mostlikely land at the free throw line,where this entire sordid episodebegan. I’d finish by giving thecrowd my best, “guess it justwasn’t my night” look, retreat tomy seat and endure what wouldhopefully be only mild abuse fromfellow game patrons.The sad part of that scenario is thatthere would be no opposingplayers swiping at the ball orsticking their hands in my facewhile I embarrassed myself. Youshould see me in a pickup game.So, parents of sports toddlers,don’t get too excited if they cancatch a ball or skate around a rinkwithout falling before reaching 5years old. Don’t invite collegecoaches to watch next weekend’sT-ball game.
