The big question is:Which one?For years, I’ve had it lodged in mymind that Cambridge was muchbetter to visit than Oxford. Butrecently, I’ve been leaning Oxford.Really, though, it depends on whatyou’re looking for: BustlingOxford is the more substantialtown, with plenty to see and do.Cambridge, with lovely gardensalong the River Cam, has a simplerand more charming atmosphere.Both towns are a quick hour's trainride away from London, withOxford to the west and Cambridgeto the north, making each a funand doable day-trip. Cambridge,with fewer accommodations,works better as a side-trip fromLondon than as a stopover. Oxfordcan keep you busy sightseeing fora longer time and has plenty ofgood hotels – so it’s worth a longerstay. Oxford is also a stone’s throwfrom several other importantEnglish destinations: theCotswolds, Stratford-upon-Avon,Warwick, and Blenheim Palace.And good news: if you really can'tpick just one, there are great busconnections between them.Despite their fierce rivalry –especially when it comes torowing – Oxford and Cambridgehave many similarities.
