Page 4 HAPPENINGS May 11, 2023 www.hap2it.com Comedian Tom Cotter is perhaps best known for grabbing the runner-up spot on Season 7 of NBC’s hit variety show America’s Got Talent. There’s no disputing, he says, that the show and his success on it rocketed his stand-up career to new heights. But he’s taken his share of ribbing for the act that took the top spot. Dogs. “They were mixed breeds, but Labradoodles, mostly Labradors mixed with poodles,” he told Happenings in an exclusive interview. “And there were there were 21 of them, and they ranged in size from a teacup – little, tiny, tiny, tiny creatures -- all the way up to big, you know, 80 pounds. “So, you were really competing with 21 contestants. And they got their puppy treats from Lance Armstrong. So, I would argue that there may have been some steroids involved.” Cotter need not worry about canines at his upcoming gigs May 19 and 20 at the Kenosha Comedy Club at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 5125 6th Ave. His shows begin at 8 p.m. each night – and no dogs are allowed. Cotter was raised in the East Side enclave of Providence, Rhode Island, as the youngest of six children. His father, Dr. Walter C. Cotter, was a World War II Navy veteran and later became a wellregarded neurosurgeon. His mother, Barbara Cotter, was a homemaker and managed his father's medical office. Cotter attended the Moses Brown School in Providence, and Denison University for his undergraduate degree. His choice of career, he says, was not met with a round of applause at first from his parents. “Were they supportive? My father was not doing cartwheels, I can tell you that,” Cotter recalls. “You know, out of six of us, not one of us followed my father's footsteps into medicine, which is a great practice, but I never saw the guy. I don't I don't begrudge him that; he was working so hard. He was on called literally every night at seven different hospitals and just worked really hard. “And he was a great provider and put us all through really great schools and colleges. But you know, when we looked at that we thought, ‘Is that really the lifestyle we want to live where we're never home and we're always working?’ So, he was very patient as I tried to figure out my way in the world. “And it wasn't until I did The Tonight Show that it clicked for him. Everything I had done was irrelevant to him. Everything I had done was on MTV or Comedy Central and things that he couldn't relate to. But when I finally did the show Johnny Carson had hosted, he figured out maybe I wasn’t a complete waste.” Cotter is married to Kerri Louise, who is also a stand-up comedian. The two have three sons. They have worked together on different projects including Two Funny, a reality show on Women's Entertainment Network. “You know, comedy is a dream job if you dream of poverty and rejection,” he says. “So, the fact that two of us went down that path together is unique. There aren't that many of us out there. There are a few married comedy couples out there, and people get nostalgic for Burns and Allen and Nichols and May and Lucy and Desi. “So, we get asked to work together a lot. But it's not easy because her style of comedy is kind of storytelling, and I'm more of a rapid-fire one-liner guy. And merging those two styles together can be challenging, but we do it all the time. “I will say that she went further than I did on Last Comic Standing, and don't think for a minute that I don't hear about that at least once a week.” Cotter is thrilled to be back on the road, noting that the pandemic might have been harder on comedians and other live performers than most Americans. “During the pandemic,” he notes, “you all got to work. But we were called ‘non-essential.’ They kept telling us we couldn't work because we were not essential. My mother-in-law prefers the term ‘useless’ but either way, we couldn't work and so we were home together all the time twiddling our thumbs and doing shows on Zoom. “So yeah, it's a tough path that we chose, and I hope my children choose a different path. But, you know, I'm still very happy with my lifestyle and the course that we chose.” Tom Cotter takes the stage May 19th and 20th at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available to purchase online at www.hap2it.com By Gary Schneeberger Tom Cotter comes to Kenosha for performances at the Kenosha Comedy Club May 19th and 20th - for ticket info, visit hap2it.com To hear more about Tom Cotter directly from Tom Cotter, tune in to Happenings Q&A on Tuesday May 16th at 12:30pm on AM1050 WLIP when Tom joins the show. Page 6 HAPPENINGS May 11, 2023 www.hap2it.com Bupkis showrunner Judah Miller says his new Peacock comedy explores the disparity between comedian Pete Davidson's public persona and the way his family and friends see him. "People are very critical of public figures, but the people who know Pete, and his family who know him, love him and know him to be such a kind and sweet person," Miller told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. Now streaming, the semiautobiographical show opens with the former Saturday Night Live cast member and King of Staten Island actor living in the basement of his mother's Staten Island home and using a virtual reality set where he Googles his name and finds pages of unflattering media stories about his appearance, career, mental health and romances. Bored, he quickly moves on to PornHub. "His authenticity and his fearlessness in exposing and expressing very intimate parts of his life in his work, I think fans of Pete really appreciate," said Miller whose own credits include American Dad! and Crashing. "I like to say this show is a fever dream of the absurdity of Pete's life." Davidson is known for staying true to his working-class roots, despite earning fame and fortune - - and dating some of the most recognizable women in the world - - years before his 30th birthday. No boundaries were set in the creation of the show, according to Miller. "Pete was so instrumental and involved in developing each of these stories that we told. We weren't really stepping into territories that he wasn't willing to go into because he was developing this with us," the writer-producer said. "In addition to being a brilliant comedian, Pete is a really incredible writer and actor, so I think all of this is showcased in the show." At this point, it's unclear whether this project is a one-off or could run several seasons on the streaming service. "This is ripped from the pages of his life, so there is an endless wealth of inspiration for a show like this," Miller said. "But, right now, we're just really excited for people to check out the first season." Viewers should be warned that the tone shifts wildly from episode to episode. "Sometimes, [even] within episodes we will be turning things in very unexpected ways," Miller said. Davidson's real-life mother and sister have seen the show and are supportive of it. "We have one episode, in particular, that touches on very poignant moments in their family history and it's incredible the access that we have to some very real aspects of Pete's life," Miller said of the comedian whose father was a firefighter who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks on New York City. The Sopranos icon Edie Falco plays Davidson's mother and Goodfellas star Joe Pesci plays his grandfather. Guest stars include La La Anthony, Carly Aquilino, Colson Baker (Machine Gun Kelly), Josh Bitton, Preston Brodrick, Steve Buscemi, Bobby Cannavale, Kevin Corrigan, Nadia Dajani, Charlamagne Tha God, Charlie Day, Philip Ettinger, Derek Gaines, Brad Garrett, Al Gore, Paul Walter Hauser, Lynne Koplitz and LouLou Lazarus. "We just lucked out. A lot of people showed up for Pete. A lot of people are interested in working with Pete and Joe, specifically, developed a real, almost grandfatherly relationship with Pete that exceeded the show itself, which was really beautiful and incredible to see," Miller said. "It's very surreal. We have dreams of who we would cast to play these characters and time and time again, the people that we get are just incredible." Pesci, Falco and Garrett gamely jumped right into some hilarious, sexually explicit situations right from the start. "As a writer, it's humbling to have someone like Brad Garrett come in and just fearlessly go into things that are risk-taking and trust that we are going to take something in our pilot that is kind of shocking and irreverent, but then ... somehow turn it into something heartwarming, which i felt like we were able to do," Miller said. He called Falco "one of the greatest actors of our time" and said she was up for anything, no matter how ludicrous and funny they asked her to be. "She did it with such a level of nuance and realism," Miller said. "She provided a whole other layer of reality to what we're doing." By Karen Butler 'Bupkis' is surreal exploration of Pete Davidson's absurd life Pete Davidson (L) and Joe Pesci star in the comedy "Bupkis, Edie Falco also stars in the new Peacock comedy “Bupkis”

www.hap2it.com May 11, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 13 Seven horses died leading up to Kentucky Derby day Two horses suffered fatal injuries on last Saturday's Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs, bringing to seven the total of equine deaths at the track leading up its biggest race of the year. Track officials, expressing "the utmost sadness" over the deaths, said there has been no obvious pattern to the fatalities, which occurred on dirt and turf surfaces, during training, during races and shortly after races. "Our track surfaces are closely monitored by industry experts to ensure their integrity," Churchill Downs Inc. said in a statement unattributed to any individual. "Each horse that participates in racing at Churchill Downs must undergo multiple, comprehensive veterinarian exams and observations to ensure their fitness to race." While Churchill Downs promised renewed efforts to improve safety, racing's critics, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, seized on the string of fatalities to further their push to abolish the sport. "Churchill Downs is a killing field," PETA senior vice president Kathy Guillermo said after the Derby Day deaths. "They should play 'Taps' at the Derby instead of 'My Old Kentucky Home.'" Woman stung by scorpion aboard Air India flight A woman on an Air India plane was stung by a scorpion while on a flight from the city of Nagpur to Mumbai. The flight occurred April 23, the airline said in the statement issued to the Press Trust of India, calling it an "extremely rare and unfortunate incident." The airline said it has previously encountered cases of rats or birds onboard flights. The woman was treated at a hospital and later released without issue. After the flight touched down in Mumbai, officials carried out a search of the entire plane, eventually locating the scorpion. The Airbus A-319-100 was then fully fumigated. The company operates a total of 16 of the singleaisle passenger jets, with an average age of 14.8 years. North Carolina man faces down bear to rescue his dog A North Carolina man used a walking stick to protect his dog from a hungry bear that aimed to make a meal out of the Yorkshire terrier. John Koerber, 67, of Beechwood Lakes, said ChewB woke him up for a bathroom break recently at 4 a.m., about an hour before the yorkie's usual potty time. Koerber harnessed ChewB on a retractable leash and took him out into the darkness to do his business. Koerber noticed ChewB do a "startled head turn to the woods," followed by the sound of "an incredibly deep-throated roar of sorts." The bear suddenly appeared and lunged for the dog, Koerber said. He said he quickly yanked ChewB back toward him and set about warding the bear off with a walking stick. The bear blocked the duo's path back to the door, and ChewB found his courage and lunged toward the bear, which responded by reaching out its claws toward the canine. "I let out the deeps howl of, 'No,' and smacked him on his head one more time. And he backed up enough, so I went in the door and shut it," Koerber told WLOS-TV. The man and his dog managed to avoid any injuries from the experience. "It was a hair-raising experience, trust me," Koerber said. "Little Chewbster, he means the world to us. He's a good little guy." Man uses $40 in lottery winnings to win $500,000 jackpot A Michigan man who won a $40 prize from a lottery ticket decided to reinvest his winnings into more tickets -- and won $500,000. The 74-year-old Hillsdale County man told officials he took his winning lottery ticket to redeem his prize. "I was cashing in a $40 winning ticket and used my winnings to buy more tickets," the player said. "I scratched the tickets as soon as I got in my car and the Lucky No. 13 ticket was the last one that I scratched." The player said his eyes initially deceived him about his prize. "I thought I'd won $500, so I put on my glasses and looked the ticket over again to make sure I was reading it right. When I realized I had actually won $500,000, I couldn't believe it!" he said. The winner said his prize money will go toward paying bills and completing home improvement projects. Cow that escaped during senior prank gets a new name A cow that ran loose through a Chicago suburb after escaping during a senior prank was given a new name: Blossom. The Hooved Animal Humane Society in Woodstock said Blossom's name was chosen from hundreds of submissions from members of the public. Officials wrote in a Facebook post that the name "is so fitting since she is truly blossoming before our eyes every day." Blossom escaped and ran loose through Niles in early hours Thursday. The cow was one of several animals being brought to Northridge Preparatory School as part of a senior prank. The Humane Society said officials are now working to find Blossom a new permanent home. coast to coast King Charles, Queen Camilla make surprise appearance on 'American Idol' The newly crowned King and Queen of England made one of their first post-coronation stops on US television. American Idol judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry performed at the concert to celebrate the first coronation of a British royal since 1953 when Charles's mother Queen Elizabeth was crowned. The two were making an appearance on the show to share their experience at the event. Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morrisette stepped in for the duo on Idol, judging and performing so Perry and Richie could make the trip to England. Richie and Perry were live in Windsor Castle telling Idol viewers about the concert when Richie stepped aside. "Excuse me, Katy. I have a surprise," he said. "Oh my goodness," Perry, who appeared to be genuinely taken aback, said as Charles and Camilla moved into view. She then attempted to curtsy. A cheerful King Charles asked, "I just wanted to check, how long you will be using this room for?" Richie responded, jokingly, 'We'll have to give this room up right away." After more lighthearted banter, King Charles thanked Perry and Richie for their performance at the concert. The king then joked that he'd take Richie to the party, i.e., the coronation concert, but that the "All Night Long" singer was "so busy with these other things." Perry and Richie then said in unison, "We're coming to the party." Perry's been active in charities attached to the king when he was still Prince Charles. And Richie has a strong connection to King Charles, whom he considers a friend. King Charles Blossom

Page 14 HAPPENINGS May 11, 2023 www.hap2it.com Thousands of Delta Airlines employees and their families gathered in Atlanta to drag a Boeing 747 and raise money for charity. The 12th annual Delta Jet Drag, held at Delta TechOps, featured teams of airline employees and family members attempting to drag a 255,000- pound Boeing 757 a total of 25 feet. Each team was composed of 25 people. "When you're out there, the adrenaline is so crazy," Patti Schultz, a Delta performance manager and president of the company's cancer support group, told The Atlanta JournalConstitution. "It's crazy to think you can pull a 757 jet, but it is exhilarating to do that." The event raised over $1 million for the American Cancer Society. A flight from Houston to Atlanta was delayed for about three hours when thousands of bees swarmed on the wing of the airplane. Passenger Anjali Enjeti posted photos of the bees to Twitter and documented the experience of the delayed Delta Airlines flight at Bush Intercontinental Airport. "My flight leaving Houston is delayed because bees have congregated on the tip of one of the wings. They won't let us board until they remove the bees," Enjeti tweeted. Enjeti said the plane's captain announced a beekeeper would not be removing the insects due to not being allowed to touch the plane, and pest control would not be allowed to spray the bees. The airport was also unable to use a hose to spray the wing with water. Enjeti said the bees finally dispersed when the plane's engine was turned on so it could make way for another flight to use the gate. "Bee-lieve it or not, Delta flight 1682 from Houston-Bush to Atlanta took a delay this afternoon after a friendly group of bees evidently wanted to talk shop with the winglet of our airplanes, no doubt to share the latest about flying conditions at the airport," Delta officials said in a statement to CBS News. Biden announces new rules on how airlines compensate passengers for flight delays The Biden administration announced a plan to set up new federal protocols that would for the first time require all commercial airlines to compensate passengers for controllable cancellations or significant delays. The president said the new protocol will require airlines to compensate customers with meals, hotels, transportation, rebooking fees and more. The formal rule proposal is to come later this year. President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg detailed the plans in remarks from the White House. "You deserve to be fully compensated," Biden said. "Your time matters. The impact on your life matters." The strategy would force airlines to provide cash refunds and expanded perks when stranded passengers accrue extra expenses for things like meals and hotels. Currently, no airliner in the country is required to offer reimbursements for meals, lodging, and rebooking during flight delays caused by routine issues such as mechanical problems. And none were offering any cash payouts or additional compensation beyond basic refunds and amenities in cases where an airline was directly at fault for a preventable delay, according to the White House. "When an airline causes a flight cancellation or delay, passengers should not foot the bill," Buttigieg said in a statement. The policy change is intended to establish uniform rules among all the nation's airlines in an effort to create fair compensation packages for passengers caught in significant delays. Ten of the nation's largest airlines currently offer free meals and rebooking, while nine guarantee hotel accommodations. Two airlines offer travel credits or vouchers, while only one guarantees frequent flyer miles, the administration said. "Historically, when delays and cancellations are the airline's fault, the law has only required airlines to refund customers the price of their flight ticket but not the cost of meals or hotels or transportation when you get left in limbo," Biden said. "But then we challenged them to do better. And, in fact, they did." Airlines would also be required to pay for rebooking expenses caused by "a cancellation or significant delay," Buttigieg said. The imminent changes come several months after droves of Southwest passengers became stranded for days at airports nationwide during a massive winter storm that crippled travel in the middle of the holidays. "I know these things may not matter to the very wealthy, but they matter most to middle-class families and people struggling to get the cost in the first place of getting that airline," Biden said. At the time, Buttigieg called the delays "unacceptable," and since the administration has been putting increased pressure on the industry to improve pricing and customer service. The Transportation Department first proposed the rule changes last August after a wave of complaints from travelers due to delays and cancellations throughout the summer. Last fall, the White House also proposed transparency measures to strengthen consumer protection by requiring airlines to disclose hidden fees before customers buy tickets, which would change how fees related to baggage, cancellation, and rebooking would be applied to the regular price of a flight. As part of the latest effort, the Transportation Department is launching "an expanded Airline Customer Service Dashboard" at FlightRights.gov, that will track which airlines offer cash compensation, travel credits, vouchers, frequent flyer miles and other amenities, the White House said. The studio shared a trailer for the biopic featuring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist known as the "father of the atomic bomb." Oppenheimer is written and directed by Christopher Nolan (Inception, Dunkirk). The film is based on the Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin book American Prometheus, which explores how Oppenheimer's work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the first atomic bomb during World War II. The trailer shows Oppenheimer (Murphy) assemble a secret team of scientists to build the bomb. "We've got one hope. All of America's industrial might and scientific innovation connected here, a secret laboratory. Keep everyone here until it's done," he says in one scene. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon,Robert DowneyJr. and Florence Pugh also star. Universal previously released a trailer for the film in December. Oppenheimer opens in theaters July 21. Vin Diesel teaches 'Fast X' son 'to be a survivor' Universal Pictures released a new featurette for Fast X last week. The film opens May 19 in theaters. The father/son featurette focuses on Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) son, Little B (Leo Abelo Perry). B is short for Brian, named after the late Paul Walker's character, though the Fast series has kept Brian alive off camera following Walker's final film, Furious 7. "In Fast X you will see a fatherhood that is more representative of a fatherhood in the past where you teach your kid to be a survivor," Diesel says. "It's something that every father and mother in the world can identify with. We all want the next generation to be better than the last. That's fatherhood." Dom discovered he had a son in The Fate of the Furious. "I would say he's pretty tough because he has his family around him," Perry says. "He knows that he's protected. It's like a family bond." Fans know that family is the central tenet of Dom. Fast X introduces Dante (Jason Momoa), who is related to the villains of Fast Fiveand returns for revenge on Dom. The trailer shows action scenes inthe Vatican and on the Hoover Dam. "There's something that happens to you when you look at yourself in the mirror and it's someone completely different looking back at you," Shor said in a recent interview. "It's disarming, but in a great way, because it forces you to question your identity." Vim is a henchwoman of The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuju) aiding his experiments to create an ideal society on Counter-Earth. The character Rocket the raccoon was one of those experiments who escaped, and ultimately joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. On Counter-Earth, the Guardians face High Evolutionary, Vim and other galactic scientists. Her face shows through her alien head, but Shor, 51, said she trusted the makeup and costume team to create Vim. Shor said writer/director James Gunn also allowed them to improvise even if it would not make the final cut. One scene that stayed in the movie has High Evolutionary scream at Vim for failing him. Shor said the unedited take was excessive even by alien supervillain standards. "He got in my face more than you could possibly imagine for longer than you could possibly imagine," Shor said. www.hap2it.com May 11, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 17 Q: As my husband was taking out the trash last week, a woman passed him walking her dog. She told him she was interested in our house and inquired if we were looking to sell. My husband told her that we were planning on moving within the next year. Later in the week, she came by to look at the house and expressed interest in purchasing the home, in cash, next year. She would like to be notified before we put the home on the market, as she would like to purchase it. If we can agree on a price, do we need real estate agents? In Houston, where we are located, real estate attorneys are not commonly used in residential real estate transactions. Could we not involve real estate agents and save on the commission costs and just do the real estate transaction with a real estate attorney? A: Buying with cash is a hot topic these days. There are quite a few stories in the news these days of buyers purchasing real estate without financing — meaning the buyers had enough cash in the bank to close on the home without taking out a loan. While your buyer may be a true cash buyer, other buyers make what they call a “cash” offer. What they actually mean is that they will not make the deal contingent on their ability to obtain financing for the purchase from a lender. Most of our readers only care that the home they’re selling closes and that they get the proceeds from the sale safely deposited into their account. When you have a buyer that has enough cash in the bank ready to close on your home, you shouldn’t have to worry whether the buyers’ lender will back out of the deal or fail to approve the buyer. In moving forward with this buyer, you’d want to know whether the buyer truly has the cash on hand or whether they plan to obtain financing. If your buyer has the cash, they should give you a letter from their financial institution stating that there are sufficient funds in the buyer’s account to cover the purchase price of the home. Once you decide to move forward, you’ll need to put together a purchase and sale agreement. You live in an area where attorneys are not customarily involved in real estate transactions. But you may have some choices. The first choice for you is to hire a real estate attorney to represent you, prepare the necessary documents and guide you through the home sale process. The second is to hire a settlement agent that can assist you with the documentation you need in the contract for the sale of the home through the settlement of the closing. In locations where real estate agents assist homebuyers and sellers in real estate transactions, the agents will typically provide the documentation to the parties. They’ll assist the sellers in filling out the contract and making required disclosures needed to sell the home. The agent may also recommend a closing settlement agent that can draft the closing documents and close the transaction. A third option is to find a real estate agent that will provide some services for a flat fee rather than a percentage of the sales price. You have time, so do a little research. Talk with the larger settlement companies in your area to determine whether they can provide you with the assistance you need, including the signing of the purchase and sale agreement through the closing. While the settlement agent may charge a fee to only prepare the closing documents and close the sale, they may have an add-on fee to assist you with the purchase and sale documents as well. You can talk to a local real estate agent to see if they might provide the services you need. But if you and your neighbor have already agreed on a price for the home, you don’t need to pay an agent a percentage commission to assist you with the paperwork to sell the home. However, an enterprising agent may be willing to assist you for a $500 or $1,000 fee. Lastly, a real estate attorney in your area may have sufficient experience to assist you as well in this process. However, Sam’s experience is that many real estate attorneys in states that do not commonly use attorneys to close residential real estate sales may not want to take on the obligation of helping a seller or a buyer in a simple residential real estate closing. Having said all that, what you really need is a person that has a deep knowledge of the residential real estate process who can explain to you the documentation you need to sign, go over other services you’ll need, and walk you through the process from start to finish. In states that have attorneys assist sellers and buyers in residential real estate closings, the attorney advocates for either the seller or the buyer and works with their seller or buyer through the transaction. That attorney has the task of explaining the ins and outs of the transaction, helping their clients avoid pitfalls, and bringing the deal to a successful closing. Just remember that if your buyer plans to finance the property, the real estate attorney representing their mortgage lender will Texas homeowners consider selling to cash buyer without a real estate agent Ilyce Glink is the author of 100 Questions Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask (4th Edition). Page 20 HAPPENINGS May 11, 2023 www.hap2it.com Even with a slight dip in lending rates, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported Wednesday hat applications for a loan toward a home declined from week-ago evels. In the latest sign of a cooling economy, the MBA reported a decline in mortgage applications even as the rate on a 30-year, fixederm mortgage declined five basis points to 6.5%. Joel Kan, the deputy chief economist for the association, said that ending rates are still far higher han year-ago levels. "Elevated rates continue to both mpact homebuyer affordability and weaken demand for refinancng," he said. "Home purchase activity has been very sensitive to rates and local market trends, ncluding the very low supply of existing-home inventory." The week-on-week decline in ending rates, however, may help explain the slight increase in refinancing. MBA data showed the share of mortgage activity attributed to refinancing an existing loan ncreased 0.4% to 27.2% of all applications. Meanwhile, the number of newly constructed homes accounts for a greater share of what's on the market, giving would-be buyers a few more options. That said, recent data show hose homes are increasingly more expensive. While a lagging indicaor relative to MBA data, the federal government reported the average price for a new home sold in March was $449,800, compared with $435,900 for March 2022. Higher lending rates from year-ago levels meanwhile, tacks more on to a monthly mortgage payment. From a weakening labor sector where wage growth is sluggish, to emerging headwinds in the housing market, pessimism is bubbling up in the U.S. economy. A late-April survey from The Conference Board showed consumers are turning pessimistic amid concerns about a possible recession. Purchases from everything from a home to a new appliance declined amid lingering inflationary pressures. www.hap2it.com May 11, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 23 I took over weekly grocery shopping duties to give my lovely wife a break after more than 40 years. I continue to be astonished at the prices of ordinary food staples like bacon, eggs, bread and milk. Do you suffer from the same sticker shock? Do you have dusty cartons of egg money hidden in your garage or basement? I’m quite sure you do and you don’t even realize it. Right next door to my grocery store is a regional hardware store. Weeks ago, I was needed some toggle bolts to reinstall a running board on my truck. My bill for the four bolts, the toggle nuts, four fender washers and four lock washers was just under $10. I was aghast at this price. One would think the hardware was silver plated, but alas it was all zinc. A year ago, I had a similar experience. I bought six onepound boxes of coarse-thread drywall screws at a big box store, thinking they’d have the best price. I wanted them in various lengths, as they come in very handy for any number of projects. I had to trade a $50 bill to get these pieces of hardware. I was in shock when I just got back a few coins in change. A few days ago, I started a decluttering project in an effort to reclaim my garage. You might be like me and have too much stuff. I had so much that I had to park my truck outside all winter. Living in snowy New Hampshire, I found that inconvenient. On one wall of my garage, I have 8-foot tall shelves packed with plastic bins of all sorts of hardware. Many of these bins used to be in the utility-body truck I drove each day when I built homes. I had my own traveling hardware store, so I rarely had to make a special run to get certain nails, screws or bolts. Since these fasteners don’t go bad, I’ve kept them all these years. While they’re not in perfect order, I’ve come to realize I have thousands of dollars of hardware in my garage. It’s possible there could be nearly $10,000 worth based on current prices. How much treasure disguised as nuts, bolts and screws do you have in your garage or basement? How often do your kids make fun of you for saving it all? It appears you were wise to do it. The trick is to have it sorted so you know what you have. How about power tools? How many corded power tools do you own? Based on the stratospheric prices I see for replacement batteries for new power tools, I can assure you that corded power tools are going to be worth lots of money in the future. In fact, you may want to take any spare money you have and buy common corded circular saws, drills and belt sanders — and keep them warm and dry in their unopened boxes. The day will come when someone thinks it’s smarter to deal with an extension cord, as I did for decades, rather than pay $200 or $300 for a replacement battery each year. Now let’s discuss hiding treasure. I happen to know a lot of you are quite interested in this topic. I’m in the process of completing a book about all the things people want in their homes. While doing the research, I discovered the second-most popular wish items were secret places to hide valuables in the ordinary home. As you might suspect, I received lots of great suggestions to add to those I already knew about and use myself. It’s important to recognize both water and fire dangers. Some irreplaceable items you own may be susceptible to damage by both. Then again, there are some metallic objects that don’t mind water and quite high temperatures. One of the challenges is outsmarting burglars. I’m guessing not many would read a home improvement column like this, so I feel safe sharing some ideas. Small items can be hidden inside a paint roller that you, cough cough, forgot to clean. You took it off the frame but then got distracted, remember? Even the roller pan didn’t get cleaned. You’d be surprised the number of small valuables you can fit inside the roller as you slide it back on the frame. Did you know you can buy a tiny can of paint that’s the exact same color as mayonnaise? Imagine if you carefully cleaned a used jar and then coated the inside of it with the paint allowing it to dry. Fill the jar up and put it back in the refrigerator or pantry. What about creating a hidden drawer under your workbench top? Can you envision how simple this is to do? Lots of thin objects could be stored in a workbench that measures 20 inches deep by 7 feet long! Are you remodeling? Think about creating a 30-inch wide secret space with a bedroom wall on one side and a closet wall on the other. Assuming the end of this cavity is in a hallway or another room, the opening to the space could be covered by a tall, thin mirror that hangs on a french cleat. Or, you might just use a big poster of Raquel Welch or Cary Grant. Who would ever suspect there was a hole behind the poster? Uncovering — and hiding — treasure at your home Go to: www.AsktheBuilder.com to subscribe to Tim Carter's FREE newsletter and listen to his new podcasts. Tune in to Happenings Q&A/AM1050 WLIP on Tue. May 23rd at 1:30 when Tim joins the conversation Based on a cursory inventory of this clutter, Tim Carter estimates you’re looking at approximately $5,000 worth of simple hardware. What have you got in your basement or garage workshop?
