Page 4 HAPPENINGS September 28, 2023 www.hap2it.com In December 2018, John Legend joined then-newly elected U.S. Rep. Alexandria OcasioCortez, D-N.Y., to criticize the exploitation of congressional interns on Capitol Hill, most of whom worked for no pay. Legend's timing was ironic. NBC's The Voice had just announced that Legend would join as a judge. He would go on to reportedly earn $14 million a season by his third year on the show. Meanwhile, all of the participants on The Voice, save for the winner, earned $0 for their time, apart from a housing and food stipend -- much like those congressional interns. The fall 2023 TV lineup will be saturated with low-cost reality TV shows like The Voice; for networks, it's an end-around to the ongoing TV writers and actors strikes. Whether it's The Voice, House Hunters, American Chopper or The Bachelorette, reality shows thrive thanks to a simple business model: They pay millions of dollars for big-name celebrities to serve as judges, coaches and hosts, while participants work for free or for paltry pay under the guise of chasing their dreams or gaining exposure. These participants are the unpaid interns of the entertainment industry, even though it's their stories, personalities and talent that draw the viewers. Dreams vs. reality To conduct research for my book, Getting Signed: Record Contracts, Musicians and Power in Society, I interviewed musicians around the country. The book was about the exploitative nature of record contracts. But during my research, I kept running into singers who had either auditioned for or participated in The Voice. On the show, singers compete on teams headed by a celebrity coach. Following a blind audition and various elimination rounds, the live broadcasts begin with four teams of five members apiece. These 20 contestants spend months working in Los Angeles and are provided with only their room and board. Each week, at least one player is eliminated. At the end of each season, the winner receives $100,000 and a record contract. While some viewers might see reality shows like The Voice as launching pads for music careers, many of the musicians I spoke with were disheartened by their experiences on the show. Unlike American Idol, where a number of winners, from Kelly Clarkson to Jordan Sparks, have made it big, no winners of The Voice have become stars. The closest person to "making it" from The Voice is the controversial country singer Morgan Wallen, who was infamously dropped by his label and country radio following the emergence of a video of him using a racial slur. And Wallen didn't even win The Voice; in fact, he barely made it past the blind audition. Former contestants repeatedly told me that the television exposure did little to help their careers. Prior to joining the show, many of the musicians were trying to scratch out a living through touring or performing. They put their developing careers on pause to chase their dreams. However, the show's contracts have stipulated that contestants cannot perform, sell their name, image and likeness, or record new music while on The Voice. This leaves the 20 finalists with no means to sell their music, even as they spend up to eight months competing. When the show's losers return to performing, many of them have little new material to promote. By the time they drop a new single or album and announce a tour, some of them told me that they had lost a good portion of their following. There is one group of people who receive meaningful exposure from these shows: the coaches and judges. Several singers, such as Gwen Stefani and Pharell Williams, have used The Voice to jolt their stagnating music careers. While earning millions as coaches and judges, these stars even use the show to promote their music -- something the contestants are barred from doing. Paying these contestants is feasible. If Legend earned $13 million instead of $14 million, that spare million dollars could be dispersed to half of the contestants at $100,000 apiece -- an amount that's currently only reserved for the winner of the show. Cut the salaries of all four coaches by $1 million apiece, and it would free up enough money to pay all 20 contestants $200,000 each. Gold mine for networks The Voice is far from the only reality show to take advantage of the genre's low overhead costs. Over the past two decades, shows featuring Americans looking to buy houses or remodel their homes have exploded in popularity. HGTV cornered this market by creating popular shows such as House Hunters, Flip or Flop and Property Brothers. Viewers might not realize just how profitable these shows are. Take House Hunters. The show follows a prospective homebuyer as they tour three homes. Homebuyers featured on the show have noted that they earn only $500 for their work, and the episodes take three to five days and about 30 hours to film. The show's producers don't pay the realtors to be on it. Reality TV show contestants more like unpaid interns than Hollywood stars John Legend reportedly earns $14 million a season for being a judge on "The Voice." Meanwhile, all of the participants on the show, save for the winner, earned $0 for their time, apart from a housing and food stipend story continues on page 7 Born John Roger Stephens December 28, 1978 (age 44) Springfield, Ohio At the age of 15, Legend won a Black History Month essay competition run byMcDonald's, following the prompt "How do you intend to make Black history?" with an essay about how he intended to be a successful musician. Legend was a whiz in school, skipping two grades, graduating high school early and enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania at age 16. In college, Legend served as president and musical director of the jazz and pop a cappella group the Counterparts. In 2001, Legend was signed to Kanye West’s record label and chose his stage name to what he perceived as an “old school sound.” His debut album, “Get Lifted” was released in 2004 and debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 charts. Body of Knowledge Saliva production has a circadian rhythm, with the most spit produced in late afternoon and least at night. Salivation consists of five phases, reports Mental Floss. Most are triggered by the passage of food through the body; not all are good. The first phase is cephalic, which occurs when you see or smell something delicious. The buccal phase is the body's reflexive response to the actual presence of food in the mouth (which aids in swallowing). The esophageal phase involves the stimulation of the salivary glands as food moves through the esophagus. The gastric phase occurs if something irritates your stomach, such as just before vomiting. The intestinal phase is triggered by a food that doesn't agree with you passing through the upper intestine. Food for Thought Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that can be deadly, but the same stuff that comes out of your car's tailpipe can also be used in packaging beef and some types of fish, such as tilapia and tuna, because it helps preserve their pinkish blush. The gas is injected into plastic wrapped foods after all of the air has been sucked out. It's considered safe for humans, but it isn't widely used anymore because food safety organizations objected to its potential for masking meat spoilage. Med School Q: Why does squinting seem to improve vision — at least in the moment? A: Two reasons. First, squinting can help temporarily reshape the lens to focus light where it needs to go. Second, it can reduce the amount of light going into the eye. In both cases, it's providing an assist to the retina, helping just the right amount of light to hit the right part of the retina. Contrary to some notions, squinting a lot does not damage eyesight, but it's a good indication that you might need to see an optometrist. Page 6 HAPPENINGS September 28, 2023 www.hap2it.com Those who want to make the most of Halloween can include travel plans in their schedules. North America boasts plenty of locations that have scary-sounding monikers, are supposedly haunted, or have attractions that will appeal to those looking for a few extra chills and thrills. • Salem, Massachusetts Salem is a prime spot to spend Halloween because of the events that took place there in 1692-93 surrounding the Salem Witch Trials. Mass hysteria among the area's Puritans resulted in accusations, convictions and executions of people purported to be witches. Given witches' relationship to Halloween, Salem is popular among tourists yearround, and especially so in October. • Screams Halloween Theme Park Visitors to Dallas, Texas may be expecting to see cows, horses or even oil rigs, but they also can visit a theme park devoted to Halloween fright. Screams Halloween Theme Park visitors can see five haunted attractions and additional entertainment. • Tombstone, Arizona This is the quintessential Wild West town made famous by Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Resident ghosts are said to haunt the theater, and there are haunted hotels where visitors can stay. Some walking ghost tours can make a visit even more frightful. • Hell's Gate, British Columbia Hell's Gate is located on the Fraser River at a point where it narrows and becomes whitewater rapids. Visitors can take an Airtram down into the canyon to see Hell's Gate up close or traverse a suspension bridge. • Green-wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY Many historic cemeteries offer tours around Halloween and at other times of the year. Greenwood in the borough of Brooklyn is one of them. Walk the winding paths on your own, or sign up for a private tour. While you're in the area, take the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into Staten Island to visit the spooky-sounding Great Kills area. "Kill" comes from the old Dutch term meaning "creek." Staten Island also has Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull, which sound equally ominous. • Sleepy Hollow, New York "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is a classic story by Washington Irving featuring the fabled Headless Horseman. The real Sleepy Hollow is a small town along the Hudson River. During Halloween season, visitors can tour Gothic mansions and enjoy haunted hayrides, blazing pumpkins and more. Make sure you cross the Headless Horseman Bridge with plenty of time to spare to make it out of town before sunset. • Savannah, Georgia Tourists in Savannah will find the city is billed as "America's most haunted city." There are a wide range of architecture styles and plenty of spots that would be right at home in horror flicks. Tours let visitors explore the city's haunted happenings. Eight people were injured on a JetBlue flight Monday as it hit "sudden severe turbulence" shortly before landing in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have announced investigations. According to the NTSB, the Airbus A320 hit sudden turbulence over Jamaica as it traveled from Ecuador to Florida. The plane landed safely just before 5:30 a.m. local time, according to JetBlue's flight tracker. "JetBlue flight 1256 with scheduled service from Guayaquil, Ecuador, to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., experienced sudden severe turbulence as it neared Florida," the airline said in a statement Monday. "The flight landed safely at Fort L a u d e r d a l e - H o l l y w o o d International Airport where it was met by medical personnel who transported seven customers and one in-flight crew member to the hospital for evaluation and treatment," JetBlue said. Research has linked climate change to an increase in turbulence, specifically clear-air turbulence in the jet stream. "As you're flying, clear-air turbulence can come out of nowhere, hit the aircraft quite suddenly, and you don't have time to put the seatbelt sign on," University of Reading researcher Isabel Smith told AccuWeather national reporter Bill Wadell in July. JetBlue has not commented on the circumstances of the turbulence, the severity of the injuries or whether the injured were wearing seatbelts when the turbulence hit. "The aircraft for this flight has been taken out of service for inspection," the New York-based carrier said. "JetBlue will work to support our customers and crew members." www.hap2it.com September 28, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 7 Filmmaker and presenter Bertie Gregory said he had a plan at the start of his new National Geographic docuseries, Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory, but his non-human co-stars didn't always cooperate. Airing on Disney+, the six-part series shows Gregory following individual animals and capturing their daily lives for weeks at a time in Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, Botswana, Patagonia, Indonesia and the Central African Republic. "The lovely thing about the natural world is that animals don't read scripts," Gregory said in a Zoom interview. "We document the incredible lives of these animals, alongside our struggles to keep up with them. Because that's a pretty open format, it means that we can really roll with whatever happens," he said. Up Close builds on what the filmmaker learned making the 2022 series Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory, which also documented animal behavior in remote locations. "The most powerful and engaging wildlife stories were when -- rather than focusing on an entire species-- we focused on an individual animal family, and that's what's really cool about Animals Up Close. We are following not just one [type of] animal, but an individual animal," he said. Of course, tracking specific animals that don't generally like people presented challenges. "It means if you lose your puma or your killer whale family, you can't just find another one," he said. "That was the only puma we were interested in filming." The team had to re-find the Patagonian big cat every day for nearly two months because they didn't follow her at night. "Some days, the family would only move a couple of miles and hang out for most of the day, lounge around in the sun," Gregory said. "Some days, she would leave the cubs and walk 15-plus miles up and down the mountains in a gale and we just had to keep up with her, with all our camera equipment." One of the highlights of Up Close shows Gregory and his team capturing footage of two humpback whales in Antarctica trying to intervene as endangered B1 killer whales hunted a seal, offering rare evidence of one marine animal trying to protect another species from a predator. "That was certainly the most incredible demonstration of animal intelligence I've ever seen," Gregory said. "People always want to know just how smart animals are. That, to me, was just spine-tingling to watch. To see such levels of team work and cooperation and, I think, creativity, was really amazing." Advances in technology in recent years have made Gregory's job easier, resulting in extraordinarily beautiful footage he can share to educate and entertain TV audiences. "Drones are probably the biggest game changer in wildlife films in the last five years," Gregory said. "They allow us to tell animal behavior stories like never before." Gregory and his team also used military-grade re-breathers to help them track hard-to-find underwater subjects in the Devil Ray Islands. "Traditional scuba-diving equipment is very noisy. You make a lot of bubbles and you are very limited by the amount of time you can spend underwater," Gregory said. The re-breathers recycled the divers' air and produced no bubbles. "That means you can be much quieter and get much closer to elusive animals and, critically, they allow you to stay down for much longer," Gregory said. "We could do single dives that were more than three hours in length. Rather than being a temporary visitor to the underwater world, you become part of the environment, which is really important for wildlife stories." Gregory wants viewers of the program to come away with an appreciation for the natural world and a better understanding of the threats it faces. "There's enough doom and gloom in the news cycle and one thing I'm really proud of with the series is that we celebrate the conservation success stories in each episode," he said. "There are some amazing people that really do give me hope, turning around our relationship with the natural world and I'm really excited that, as we shine a spotlight on the animals, we get to shine a light on them, as well." By Karen Butler Bertie Gregory stars in the new NatGeo wildlife series “Up Close” - airing on Disney+ 'Up Close' documentarian : Animals don't read scripts Sidestepping unions That massive budget gap between reality TV and sitcoms is not simply due to an absence of star actors. Many scripted television shows are based in Los Angeles, where camera crews, stunt doubles, costume artisans, makeup artists and hair stylists are unionized. But shows like House Hunters, which are filmed across the country, will recruit crews from right-to-work states. These are states where employees cannot be compelled to join a union or pay union dues as a condition of employment. For these reasons, unions have far less power in these states than they do in places traditionally associated with film and entertainment, such as California and New York. That's one reason why TV production started moving to Atlanta -- what's been dubbed the "Hollywood of the South" -- where shows like The Walking Dead and Stranger Things have been filmed. Knoxville, Tenn., has also become a reality TV mecca. Like Georgia, Tennessee is also a rightto-work state. In Knoxville, many working musicians join the city's low-paying entertainment apparatus by taking gigs working on TV and film production crews between shows and tours. At a time when TV writers and actors are on strike, it is important to understand that the entertainment industry will try to exploit labor for profit whenever it can. Reality TV is a way to undercut the leverage of striking workers, whether it's through their lack of unionized actors or their use of nonunionized production crews. Contestants, casts and crew members are starting to catch on. Many reality TV participants have said that they feel like strike scabs. As John Legend put it, "Unpaid internships make it so only kids with means and privilege get the valuable experience." Reality TV does the same to aspiring actors, musicians and celebrities. Ex judge stripped of law license after claims she stole from her uncle to buy cryptocurrency A former judge in Cook County, Ill., has been stripped of her law license after claims she stole money from her uncle to buy cryptocurrency. Patricia Manila Martin was accused of stealing $240,000 in funds belonging to Oscar Lawton Wilkerson, Jr., after he moved into a nursing home. Martin allegedly made false statements to Wilkerson's physician and close friend about the balance in his investment, checking and money market accounts after she had closed those accounts. The saga began when Maceo R. Ellison, a friend of the then 95-year-old Wilkerson, recommended he be moved into the nursing home. Ellison held power of attorney but asked Martin, the niece of Wilkerson's former spouse, to help him manage his financial affairs. Martin resigned her position as a circuit court judge in Cook County as Wilkerson moved into Brookdale Senior Living in Orland Park in December 2020. That same month, Martin closed Wilkerson's accounts and used the money to purchase bitcoin in her name that she exclusively controlled, despite not being authorized by Ellison or Wilkerson to do so. Vaping linked to higher risk of asthma in teens New research underscores the harms of e-cigarettes, showing that vaping increases the risk of asthma in teens who have never smoked cigarettes. Although e-cigarettes have fewer toxins than regular cigarettes, they still contain a mixture of harmful chemicals and raise the risk of respiratory diseases. "Increasing knowledge about the harmful effects of ecigarette use, implementing stricter regulations, and promoting alternative coping mechanisms for mental health are potential interventions to mitigate e-cigarette use," lead author Taehyun Roh, of Texas A&M University, said. Asthma causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing. It can be controlled by taking medicine and avoiding the triggers that can cause an attack, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This new study used data from Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, a CDC survey. About 3,000 adolescents in Texas, ages 13 to 17, were questioned between 2015 and 2019. The researchers compared the results with responses from more than 32,000 teens in the broader United States. Respondents were asked whether they had ever used an e-cigarette, how often they vaped and whether they had ever been told they had asthma. Researchers said that the association found between ecigarette use and asthma among those who had never smoked conventional tobacco products demonstrates that vaping increases the risk of asthma independently from other tobacco use. First-time Powerball player wins $100,000 A Michigan woman had a brush with beginner's luck when she bought a Powerball ticket for the first time and won a $100,000 prize. Latasha Robinson, 43, of Redford, told officials the ticket she bought for the Aug. 14 drawing was her first-ever Powerball ticket. The first-time player discovered the next day that she had matched four white balls and the Powerball in the drawing, earning a $50,000 prize that was doubled to $100,000 thanks to the Power Play option. Sheep eat 600 pounds of marijuana plants A flock of sheep found their way into a greenhouse in Greece and ate more than 600 pounds of marijuana plants being cultivated for medical use. Yiannis Bourounis, owner of the greenhouse, said his crop had already been damaged by heat and recent floods when a flock of sheep managed to enter the greenhouse and feast on the remaining cannabis plants. He estimated the sheep munched their way through more than 600 pounds of plants. Bourounis said the sheep were "jumping higher than goats" after eating their ill-begotten greenery. coast to coast FAA proposes rule to reduce space debris as SpaceX launches 22 satellites SpaceX launched 22 satellites for its Starlink "constellation" into low-Earth orbit as the Federal Aviation Administration proposed a new rule to reduce space debris from commercial flights. The satellites were launched by a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. "This was the 17th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched GPS III-3, Turksat 5A, Transporter-2, Intelsat G-33/G-34, Transporter6, and now 12 Starlink missions," SpaceX said in a statement. The launch came just a day after the FAA said it is proposing a rule to limit the growth of orbital debris from commercial space flights. The FAA said in a statement that limiting debris will "reduce the potential for collisions with spacecraft and satellites to promote a sustainable space environment." The proposed rule would require companies like SpaceX to dispose of the upper stages of their rockets in one of five ways. Companies would be required to either conduct a controlled entry, move the upper stage to a less congested storage or graveyard orbit, send the upper stage on an Earth-escape orbit, remove the upper stage debris within five years in a process called active debris removal, or perform and uncontrolled atmospheric disposal. The FAA said that the number of orbital objects larger than about four inches is estimated to be over 23,000, as of July. Paul Sipiera joins Happenings Q&A on Fri. Oct. 6th at 9:20am on AM1050 WLIP. Once on “Arrested Development”and once, of course, the originalon“Happy Days.” I'm very proud — very proud." In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, actor Henry Winkler looks back forty-six years ago when his “Happy Days” character Arthur ‘The Fonz’ Fonzarelli took a big jump in the 1977 episode. In recent years, the stunt has transformed the sharkclearing leap into a metaphor for the precise moment when a popular TV series careened off the creative rails, which Winkler re-created with a knowing wink in a 2005 episode of the sitcom “Arrested Development.” According to Winkler, his dad, Harry, is the one that set Fonzie's shark-jump in motion. "My father kept telling me to tell [Happy Dayscreator] Garry Marshall that I waterskied," the 77-year-old actor recalls. "I said to Garry, 'My father wants you to know I waterski. Next thing I know, I'm waterskiing! They wouldn't let me do stunts. Not only that, but I didn't know how to jump! I knew how to waterski, but I didn't know how to jump like they do in the show." "He is the gift that keeps on giving. Love, patience, resilience. So much that he's teaching me. And it's teaching (our kids) so much. How to care, how to love. It’s a beautiful thing amongst the sadness." Emma Heming Willis, wife of actor Bruce Wills, gives an update on the “Die Hard” star, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia earlier this year. “There's no 'Silent Night' and there's no 'Frosty the Snowman.' It's a Cher album that has a Christmas theme, but it's... it's rock and roll, it's disco, it's everything. And I've got great people on it with me, and I've never had anybody on my record." 77-year-old singer Cher reacts when Yahoo Entertainment asks her what she meant when she said that her upcoming holiday album is “not your mother’s Christmas album.” The album, titled “Christmas” is set for release on October 20th with duets with Stevie Wonder, Darlene Love, Michael Bublé, Tyga and Cyndi Lauper. “I don’t give a crap. I am who I am. And I like who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care. And I’ve thought about that a lot. And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.” Which iconic 80s actor told CBS Sunday Morning that they “don’t give a crap” about headlines and former co-stars painting them as problematic on set? Now might not be the best time to take on new responsibilities. Do your best to remain objective and friendly if disruptive influences get in your way. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): A few well-placed words can be helpful in the face of an awkward situation. Being broadminded and openhanded could help smooth over disagreements or assist in working through conflicts with a headstrong person. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Wisdom could be at odds with your wishful thinking right now. Reflecting on what might have been may only stir up dissatisfaction with your current list of accomplishments. Common sense can be your most valuable tool. CANCER (June 21-July 22): There can be many levels of friendship. From a quick hello when they see you around to sharing your streaming passwords or deepest secrets. Try not to let familiarity trick you into going too fast with a casual acquaintance. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Build your inner validation practice rather than worrying about who is watching you or picking apart what you do. This could be a good day to get everything in tip top shape by cleaning out your drawers or reorganizing your closets. A major decision may need more time to be clarified before it can come to fruition. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Focusing on hobbies or creative projects can help keep your mind occupied.
