Joining the cast of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series in Season 4 on Disney+, gave Kylie Cantrall a chance to put her own spin on classic songs from the series. Each season, the students at the school at which the High School Musical trilogy was filmed put on their own Disney-inspired musical. Cantrall, 18, plays Dani, a TikTok star cast in the fictional High School Musical 4. "I think she's spicy," Cantrall said of her character in a Zoom interview before the SAGAFTRA strike. "Who doesn't love a mean girl?" Cantrall cited Ashley Tisdale's High School Musical character, Sharpay, as one of her favorite mean girls along with Regina George, the ringleader of the film Mean Girls. "I definitely pulled inspiration from both of them for this role," Cantrall said. The students of East High first meet Dani when she sings the song. "High School Musical," at an assembly. The song was originally sung by Vanessa Hudgens, Tisdale, Lucas Gabreel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman in High School Musical 3: Senior Year. "It's a stripped-down acoustic version, so you can imagine it's very, very different, and I did put my own spin on it," Cantrall said. "It's cool to get to reinvent it in a new way." Cantrall also teased that she would be singing other classic High School Musical songs in upcoming episodes. "It's just going to be a trip down memory lane for the audience, because we revisit these old songs and do new renditions, flip it on its head and do these modern versions," Cantrall said. She also said that upcoming musical numbers challenged her with increasingly complex dance choreography. Coincidentally, Cantrall once danced to "High School Musical" in a Las Vegas competition when she was 7. "Dancing is my first love," Cantrall said. "It was definitely cool to get to show that off a lot throughout the season with all these fun numbers." The new season also gives fans of the movie trilogy a hint at what a High School Musical 4 might have been. Cantrall and Matthew Sato play new characters who follow in the footsteps of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez. "It's so meta," Cantrall said. "It's so cool that we get to imagine what it would've been like had there been a High School Musical 4 movie in this series." Cantrall left public school in seventh grade when she was cast in the title role on the Disney sitcom, Gabby Duran & the Unsittables. Cantrall missed public high school while she was working and completing classes on set and via home school. For now, college is not on Cantrall's mind. "I see myself just continuing to do what I love," Cantrall said. "Hopefully, I just keep working and keep going down this path. I can't see myself doing anything else." In addition to acting, Cantrall releases original music. She has two singles planned for August and September, and an EP to follow. "I feel like I've been giving my fans little hints of it on my TikTok," Cantrall said. "My fans are starting to get a vibe of the type of music I write and the sound. It's very fun and confident, girl power, danceable for sure." Cantrall has been singing since she was 8. The daughter of songwriter and producer Alex Cantrall, Kylie performed on YouTube and music.ly, the social media platform that merged with TikTok. "I never even did a lot of vocal coaching," Cantrall said. "I really just would listen to my favorite singers and try to copy what they were doing." Cantrall called Brandy, Mariah Carey and Beyonce her favorite artists. "I feel like I learn to sing just listening to amazing singers and trying to apply what they're doing into my voice," Cantrall said. TikTok brings Cantrall back to her character, Dani. She did not have to research TikTok to play a TikTok star. "I feel like in this generation, everyone is a TikTok star, in a way," Cantrall said. "Pretty much every teenager is on TikTok and pretty much everyone has a story of going viral at least once." By Fred Topel Kylie Cantrall plays Dani in Season 4 of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” Kylie Cantrall puts own spin on classic 'High School Musical' songs Kylie Lorena Cantrall, also known as Hello Kylie, is an American actress, singer, and dancer. She started her career as a YouTuber, posting videos of herself singing and garnered a large fanbase. In the US, “High School Musical” generated 7.7M viewers in its premiere broadcast, breaking the record at the time for the Disney Channel. After its huge success, it was followed by a television sequel in 2007 then a third film received a theatrical release in 2008. After a direct-to-video spin-off “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure,” Disney began looking for other ways to earn off the franchise. Page 6 HAPPENINGS August 31, 2023 www.hap2it.com Budapest, the cultural capital of Hungary and much of Central Europe, has no shortage of nightlife. You can go there for grand opera, folk music and dancing, a twilight boat trip, or live music in a nightclub. But there’s also an edgy side to Budapest evenings — “ruin pubs” (romkocsma), which are ramshackle, cavern-like bars crammed with revelers having the time of their lives. To find them, you’ll have to leave the wide boulevards lined with bright, modern stores and delve into the older, more atmospheric streets of the city’s Jewish Quarter. After World War II, this area was deserted, then resettled largely by members of the Hungarian Roma minority. It remained dilapidated under communism and was slow to rejuvenate even after the Iron Curtain fell. Today it’s a neighborhood of small shops and modest facades that hide ornate, spacious synagogues used by Budapest’s small but vibrant Jewish community. The unusual combination of a central location and low rents attracted a funky breed of bars. Their low-profile entryways look abandoned, but a maze of hallways lead to large rooms and open-air courtyards filled with people and thrift-shop furniture. Enjoying a drink here, I’m reminded of creatures that inhabit discarded shells in a tide pool. The last time I was in Budapest, I ended up sitting with Peter (who designs ruin pubs), Laura (who works at a hotel), and Sandra (whose father’s company introduced adult entertainment to Hungary back in the 1990s). I told them how much I like the shabby lounge atmosphere of a ruin pub, and Laura declared that this one, Szimpla Kert (which means "Simple Garden"), is the mecca of ruin pubs in Budapest. Sandra agreed, but was distracted when Miss Hungary walked by. With a little disdain, she said, "There’s Miss Hungary — a beauty brat with a Gucci handbag, and nobody notices her." Compared to the more polished scene in cities like Vienna or Milan, fashion here tends to be more personal and eclectic. Peter bought a round of spritzes (rosé with soda water). He was excited about an event at a ruin pub called “Instant-Fogas,” and wanted us to go there. We trekked a few blocks and found a warren of rooms and alcoves in a historicfeeling, but appropriately rundown, building. Each room was decorated differently, but always creatively — I liked the upsidedown room with furniture on the ceiling. I commented on how well the design worked. Peter explained how these clubs are the soul of underground culture here. It’s the anti-club club: flea market furniture and a mishmash of colors. It’s pleasantly chaotic, designed to be undesigned. On hot nights, the pubs spill out into unkempt courtyards, creating the feeling of a cozy living room missing its roof…under the stars. Outside, Peter demonstrated the different ways you can smoke a cigarette in a counterculture enclave. First he did the affected "Beauty Queen" smoke, then the calculated "Godfather" smoke. Finally, gulping the cigarette in the middle of his lips, he did the "Working Smoker," saying, "You smoke with big lips." In recent years Hungary has enacted strict laws against smoking, so tobacco is relegated to outdoor spaces. Ruin pubs encourage a delightful sense of discovery. In one room dancers thump to an industrial beat. In the next, live jazz enhances an art display. In the next room, you and your partner find yourselves alone — perfect for an intimate conversation. These bars also come with a bit of communist kitsch. Some who love these lounges were little kids during the last years of communism. Too young to understand its downside, they have fond memories of the good times, when the pace of life was slower and families were tightly knit. Ruin pubs even sell nostalgic “commie” soft drinks along with the cocktails. I love this city for its quirks and persistent personality as much as for its Old World elegance. You’d never see a ruin pub on Paris’s Champs-Elysées, but that’s the point. Thanks to the relaxed atmosphere, it’s one of the easiest places in Hungary to make a memorable connection. By Rick Steves Enjoying the Bohemian vibe of Budapest's ruin pubs travel The eclectic “ruin pub” scene in Budapest usually spills out of the bars and into courtyards. American Airlines was hit with the largest fine of its kind for keeping passengers waiting on the tarmac without an opportunity to deplane, the Department of Transportation said. American Airlines faces a $4.1 million penalty for violating federal statutes that prohibit tarmac delays of three or more hours without offering passengers a chance to deplane. The penalty is the largest ever imposed by the department for this violation. "This is the latest action in our continued drive to enforce the rights of airline passengers," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. "Whether the issue is extreme tarmac delays or problems getting refunds, DOT will continue to protect consumers and hold airlines accountable." The department found that, between 2018 and 2021, the airline let 43 domestic flights sit for "lengthy periods" without offering a deplaning opportunity. In one instance, the Transportation Department said passengers were stuck without food and water, as required by law. Most of the delays were out of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, where delays impacted nearly 6,000 flyers during the investigation period. Page 10 HAPPENINGS August 31, 2023 www.hap2it.com Water main built in 1896 bursts in Times Square disrupting subway service A water main burst last week in New York City's Times Square causing road closures and major subway disruptions. Video posted online shows water pouring into the Seventh Ave. subway station as Power was shut down and 1, 2, 3 train service was gravely disrupted, as was 5 train service. New York City Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala said city workers were clearing the tracks and trying to determine the cause of the water main's failure. "While this intersection will probably remain closed for the rest of the day while we continue with the excavation and complete the repair it is limited to this one intersection at this point. The main impact of course has been on the subways because the water main is above the subway station here and so for that hour and a half or so where the water was running the water was running into the subway station," said Aggarwala. Aggarwala said the water main was more than a century old. "The water main was from 1896, it's a 20-inch main, so it's a pretty big, high pressure water main. We do not know the cause. We will know that after we identify the leak cut out the section of pipe and do some forensic analysis," said Aggarwala. Aggarwala also emphasized that old infrastructure is not inherently prone to failure. "Aging infrastructure is not always bad, they built stuff to last 100 some odd years ago and it did its job for 125 years right, that's pretty good," Aggarwala said. JOLTS job report on hires, quits points to a labor slowdown Fewer people quit their jobs and the number of new job listings declined for the third straight month in July, suggesting a degree of economic cooling, government data show. Job openings declined to 8.8 million on the last business day of July, a decline of around 338,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary. That's fewer than expected and comes amid a trove of data pointing to a slowdown in the broader economy. Job openings declined in professional services, social assistance and in government jobs, with services showing the bulk of the slowdown. Job openings increased in transportation, warehousing and utilities. Despite the modest decline, job openings are at their lowest rate in nearly two years. The number of people who left their jobs voluntarily, a barometer of confidence in the broader market, declined 253,000 to 3.5 million in July. Most of those people quitting their jobs were in hospitality or food services. Fewer people looking for another job suggests confidence in the market is eroding. And with a wave of strike action, most recently from members of the United Autoworkers Union, the decline in the number of quits may be ominous amid concerns about missing a paycheck. The number of people fired or laid off was statistically even from June levels, data show. From mortgage applications to a slump in manufacturing, the economy is showing signs of slowing down. The Federal Reserve last week hinted that more rate hikes may be necessary to cool things further if inflation remains above the 2% target rate. Pilot brings Texas girl's lost doll home from Tokyo A pilot came to the rescue of an American Girl doll accidentally left behind by a 9-year-old Texas girl. Rudy and Celeste Dominguez discovered after returning to the US from their trip to Indonesia, that their daughter, Valentina, was missing her doll, Beatrice. The doll was last seen on a plane in Tokyo, where the family had a stopover. The parents posted about the lost doll on Facebook, and the post came to the attention of James Danen, an American Airlines pilot based out of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Danen reached out to lostand-found at Haneda Airport in Tokyo and was able to locate Beatrice. He personally escorted the doll across the globe, snapping photos for Valentina at various airports along the way. Danen delivered the doll to the girl in person last week. Postal worker rescues kitten, wins lottery A Washington postal worker's efforts to rescue a trapped kitten led to his winning a $717,500 lottery prize. Joseph Waldherr of Tacoma told officials he was delivering the mail recently when he heard the mewling of a kitten but couldn't locate the source. The following day and discovered the feline was wedged into a small space. "He put the kitten in the pocket of his sweatshirt, where it slept for the rest of his shift," Washington's Lottery said in a news release. Waldherr said the kitten rescue left him feeling lucky, so he stopped into the Quinto convenience store and bought a Hit 5 ticket. The postal worker checked his ticket with his wife a few days later and discovered he had scored the $717,500 jackpot. Waldherr credited the lucky kitten with his win. He said the feline, now named Peaches, will have a new home at his house. coast to coast Brain study reveals 41% of young athletes under 30 had signs of CTE The authors of a scientific study say they have found alarmingly high rates of the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy among younger athletes. CTE has already been found to be quite common among retired National Football League veterans who have struggled with declining brain health due to the condition, which is caused by repeated blows to the head sustained while playing hardcontact sports. But a study conducted by Boston University CTE Center revealed that the brains of 41% of young athletes under the age of 30 also showed signs of the condition. "It seems to be well accepted now that you can play at a very high level of elite American football or ice hockey and get CTE," study coauthor Ann McKee said in a release. "But we're seeing the beginnings of this disease in young people who were primarily playing amateur sports." The results, she said, suggested that even young, amateur athletes who participate in physical contact sports at a low-profile level appear to at risk, even though their playing careers are comparatively short. McKee said most of the young athletes whose brains were studied died either by suicide or unintentional drug overdoses, while interviews with family members revealed that 70% of all the athletes -- even including those who did not have CTE -- showed "meaningful symptoms of depression and apathy" before their deaths. Studies of community brain banks indicate that fewer than 1% of the general population has the condition.

www.hap2it.com August 31, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 13 Weight, Weight, Don't Sell Me Next-generation weight loss drugs such as Ozempic (originally developed to treat diabetes) are in high demand. Until, perhaps, people see the price tag. A new study suggests that even if people have health insurance coverage, high copays can deter them from staying on such drugs. In the study, conducted before Ozempic was approved to treat obesity, insured patients with Type 2 diabetes and heart failure who faced copays of $50 or more were 50% less likely to keep taking Ozempic and Trulicity (a similar drug) than people whose copays were $10 or less. Currently, Medicare doesn't cover weight loss drugs and private insurance coverage is spotty. Contrarily, a STAT-Harris poll found that nearly half of respondents said they would pay $100 a month for weight loss drugs; one-quarter said they'd pay $250 a month and 17% said they were OK with $500 a month. Moral: Money is no issue if you look good dying. Location, Location, Location A child who develops pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common childhood cancer, has a good chance of being cured — if they live in a high-income country with access to experts. For example, more than 80% of children with (low- and high-risk) ALL treated at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego survive, but 20 miles to the south in Tijuana, Mexico, and other low- and middle-income countries, survival odds range from 10% to 60%. Since 2008, Rady has partnered with Hospital General Tijuana to share training, expertise, research and other resources. It's paid off. Survival for standard-risk ALL in Tijuana went from 73% before 2012 to 100% by 2017; for highrisk ALL, from 48% to 55%. Get Me That, Stat! It's projected that the number of people with Type 2 diabetes worldwide will more than double to 1.3 billion by 2050. By that time, about 1 in 10 people can be expected to have the disease. Currently, diabetes is the direct cause of roughly 1.5 million deaths annually worldwide. Body of Knowledge Almost half of all humans (45%) have brown eyes, followed by blue (27%), hazel (shades of brown and green — 18%) and green (9%). The remaining 1% have eyes of another color. Counts 32 million — Number of Americans with bone and joint damage caused by osteoarthritis, a condition most common among women and highly prevalent among Black and Hispanic people Best Medicine Personal trainer: You're pretty quick and nimble. Spiderman: Yep. Trainer: With great reflexes come great response ability. Observation "Above all, do not lose your desire to walk: every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it." — Danish philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) Med School Q: Why does hydrogen peroxide come in brown bottles? A: It's due to hydrogen peroxide's chemical formulation of two hydrogen atoms combined with two oxygen atoms, or H2O2. Water, of course, is H2O (one oxygen atom). Hydrogen peroxide is, in fact, mostly water. The usual formulation of 3% hydrogen peroxide means 3% hydrogen peroxide and 97% water. But the added oxygen atom in every hydrogen peroxide molecule means it's more vulnerable to losing that atom when exposed to light or heat. Over time, that inevitably happens, and all you've got left is water. Curtain Calls The French playwright Molière suffered a pulmonary hemorrhage, caused by a chronic case of tuberculosis, while playing the part of a hypochondriac in his own play "Le Malade imaginaire." He disguised his convulsions as part of his performance and finished out the show, which ends with his character dead in a chair. After the show, Moliere was carried in the chair to his house, where he died at the age of 51. Nia Vardalos, who wrote and stars in all three movies, delivers the recap. In the 2002 original, Vardalos' character, Toula Portokalos, is unmarried at 30. Toula's parents, Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan), worry for her future. Vardalos also references Gus's cure-all. "Even Windex can't fix thisa," Vardalos says. Toula meets Ian Miller (John Corbett) while working at her aunt Voula's (Andrea Martin) travel agency. Ian is not Greek, but they get married despite family objections. "Ultimately, Toula finds the inner strength to not only stand up for what she wants but also come out of her shell and show her family who she truly is," Vardalos said. In 2016's sequel, Toula and Ian already have a teenage daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris). With family businesses struggling, "Toula feels the pressure to be the fixer," Vardalos said. There is another wedding because the family discovers Gus and Maria were never officially remarried. Toula and Ian also take the opportunity to renew their vows, and send Paris to college. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 sends the gang to a Portokalos family reunion in Greece. "This time we're headed to the homeland," Vardalos said. Vardalos does not reference the short-lived TV series My Big Fat Greek Life. Vardalos also directs My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. They're teaching me to be brave… Now, at this point in my life, going back into music, it's very exciting. They know that I'm living my dream and that that's what I was born to do. Page 26 HAPPENINGS August 31, 2023 www.hap2it.com August 31, 2023 through Septembe 6, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Try not to let someone put a damper on your enthusiastic mindset. Remain trustworthy and you can receive help from others when you need assistance with your own projects. Doing the right things could add to your prestige. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Remain watchful when hoping for opportunities and you have a better chance of finding them. You can implement beneficial changes in financial arrangements or business plans that could alleviate some of the strain.. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Try not to shy away from social outings or community events even if something is weighing on your mind right now. Remain courageous if you are feeling regretful over past mistakes and you could avoid an awkward situation. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You may be ready to book a bucket-list vacation or take an inspiring visit to a special event. Share your dreams and your connections to others can become stronger. A loved one’s attention could bring a smile to your face.. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Your time may be coming soon. Make the final plans and prepare for the last steps. The ideal circumstances can make your project take off, but only if you are properly prepared. The pieces are there, the rest is up to you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Try to keep your energy levels up when you can. Being active can clear your head and give you an excuse to spend some quality time with your closest friends and loved ones. Someone close to you may be eager to please. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Trust is the cornerstone of a solid relationship. You may need to compete to emphasize your credibility. Don’t become so enthusiastic to get the job done quickly that you promise more than might be deliverable SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Relationships can run more smoothly if you spend more time focused on someone’s feelings and less time on financial strategies. You may want to put a new business plan into action, but might need to wait for another day. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Do your best to avoid a narrow mindset. A family member may be asking for too much right now and bring down your mood. Pay your bills, take care of responsibilities, and wait for a better time to have a heart-to-heart chat. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Tackle any business or career matters with intensity and focus on using the latest trends to give yourself a boost.
